VSDC Animal Rights Discussion and Education Group
VSDC Animal Rights Discussion and Education Group
Please join the [Veg Society of DC](vsdc.org) Animal Rights Discussion and Education Group for another great discussion. We are excited to round out our discussion about theories of change in the animals rights movement with a speaker who has been leading the charge on the ballot initiative to prohibit the sale of foie gras in D.C. We will have a chance to apply theory to practice by understanding how this and other ballot initiatives can create change for animals. Please join us for what we hope will be an inspiring and interesting discussion! We will grab a bite to eat at a DC Vegan afterwards. *What is the Animal Rights Discussion and Education Group?* If you’ve been looking for a way to educate yourself on animal rights and issues affecting animals in our world today with the support of a like-minded community, then this group is for you. The VSDC Animal Rights Discussion and Education Group will discuss thoughts, questions, concerns, and news related to animal rights. It seeks to provide a safe space for discussions around issues affecting captive animals, farmed animals, animals used in research, wild animals, companion animals, and more. All are welcome, from those well-versed in animal rights philosophy and issues to those who are just starting off on their journey and are curious to learn more. Please come with an open mind, an open heart, and a willingness to engage with diverse opinions with curiosity and respect. The plan is for the group to meet every month, alternating between Zoom and in person. The topic of each meeting and any accompanying materials will be planned in advance and posted in event announcements via this VSDC meetup group. Participants are encouraged to offer topic ideas and materials for discussion at subsequent meetings. **Date / Time:** Saturday, February 28th, from 4:15 to 5:45 pm (followed by dinner) **Location:** Pea Street Yoga (just above DC Vegan) *Email 'ARdiscuss@vsdc.org' for further information.* **VSDC: More Than A Meetup** We are delighted to have you as part of The Veg Society of DC Vegan Meetup group, and we look forward to seeing you at our events. Film Screening: Alma’s Rainbow (1994)
Film Screening: Alma’s Rainbow (1994)
**This event has been updated and will be hosted at Central Library in Arlington VA on Sunday! Please message with any questions!** Join us as we host our next screening of Alma’s Rainbow (1994) by Ayoka Chenzira! This film is 85 minutes and an optional short discussion with the group will follow. Synopsis: A rediscovered treasure of independent cinema, this incisive comedic drama follows Rainbow Gold (Victoria Gabrielle Platt), a teenager coming of age in Brooklyn, as she looks to two vastly different models of womanhood: her straitlaced mother, Alma (Kim Weston-Moran), who runs a hair salon in the parlor of their home and disapproves of her daughter’s newfound interest in boys; and her free-spirited, larger-than-life aunt Ruby (Mizan Kirby), who has just returned from Paris after a ten-year absence and whose presence shakes up the household. Bursting with the bold Day-Glo colors of nineties fashion, this dazzling feature from feminist filmmaker and animator Ayoka Chenzira grapples with questions of Black women’s sexuality, agency, and self-image from a multigenerational perspective. (Criterion) Closest Metro will be Virginia Square (7 min walk)

The Spirituality of Depolarization
The Spirituality of Depolarization
In a world increasingly marked by division and conflict, finding common ground has never been more crucial – and seemingly more difficult. At the same time, if we’re willing to go outside of ourselves, there are a growing number of grassroots efforts – thousands in the US alone! – all exploring various means of depolarization. In this context, might there be a role for spirituality to help guide us towards these aims, towards greater empathy and understanding for one another? More and more it seems like we can each pick and choose the bubbles we want to live in, with many of those bubbles drifting further away from others. And while there can be comfort to be found in this, are we maybe also missing out on an even better world we could be living in? What would an approach to our lives and our communities look like that speaks to our fundamental commonalities instead of our differences? How might we find and strengthen a common ground that unites while respecting our unique perspectives and contributions? What has the unique power to connect each and every one of us, to help us find that common ground, to better understand and express our essential oneness as human beings? Come join a different kind of conversation – one that welcomes every perspective in a search for the truths that unite us all – as we discuss the spiritual perspective offered by the Bahá’í Teachings on the role of spirituality in navigating polarized communities and bridging divides. Join us for a lively discussion as we explore how spirituality can help foster a society strengthened by unity and based on understanding amongst its citizens. *“So powerful is the light of unity that it can illuminate the whole earth.”* – Bahá’í Teachings \*\*\* This event is free and open to all regardless of background or belief. Donations will not be accepted.
African American Artists & Performers in the Nordic Countries/Language Practice
African American Artists & Performers in the Nordic Countries/Language Practice
In recognition of Black History Month, the Nordic Culture and Language Exchange Meetup group will explore some of the African American artists, actors, singers, and musicians who lived, worked, and performed in the Nordic countries during the 20th century, particularly in the 1930s-1960s. Please join us to learn about performers like soprano Anne Wiggins Brown, who was the first Bess in George Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess” on Broadway and who later moved to Norway and had a career there (including being a voice teacher for Liv Ulmann) and Earle Hyman, who performed in many of Shakespeare’s plays in Norway (in Norwegian!). Many African American jazz musicians performed and made their homes in Denmark (some are buried in Copenhagen) such as trumpet player Thad Jones, drummer Ed Thigpen, pianist Kenny Drew, and saxophonist Dexter Jordan. Ella Fitzgerald bought a home in Denmark, performed many concerts there, and was reported to have married her producer, a Norwegian. Artist William H. Johnson spent much of the 1930s in Scandinavia- over a thousand of his paintings are in the collection at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. During the second hour, we will split up into smaller groups to practice Norwegian, Danish, Swedish, Finnish and Icelandic.

Humanist Program: Fighting the Efforts to Insert Religion into Public Education
Humanist Program: Fighting the Efforts to Insert Religion into Public Education
The Humanist Monthly Program is our longest running event and still a community favorite. In the old days it used to be called "Going to HCCO" and we still like to think of it as our flagship event. Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk. Our March speakers are Molly Gaines and Zack Parrish, co-organizers of the Secular Education Association: They will share their story of how a small group of Ohio parents grew into a national organization tracking released-time religious instruction and other church–state issues in public schools. The presentation will cover SEA’s early wins and hard lessons, what we’re seeing nationally right now, and how local advocates can play a meaningful role in protecting public education. Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of the landscape — and practical ways to get involved. Going forward our meetings will be hybrid.
