Community Control DC: Realizing A People’s Platform for Collective Power
This session of the Assata Shakur Study Group (ASSG) will examine the Community Control DC Platform as a concrete framework for building democratic power in Black and working-class communities. The platform begins from the premise that real change comes from power, not access or representation, and calls for residents to directly govern the institutions and resources that shape their lives. Participants will study how the platform proposes Neighborhood Assemblies, Community Councils, and binding participatory budgeting as structures through which communities can exercise real governing authority. The session will also explore the broader political vision behind the platform’s demands—including community control over public safety, housing and land, health systems, environmental infrastructure, and public resources.
*Food will be provided!*
Volleyball - Advanced Beginners (B) - Bluemont Park
If you already know the fundamentals of volleyball and are looking to sharpen your skills while enjoying the game, this event is a great fit.
**Number of Nets:** 2
**Where to find us:** Park in the South Bluemont Parking Area and head toward the south end of the lot. Near the end, you’ll see a bridge on your left—cross it. We’ll be on the field just left of the picnic pavilion.
**Skill Level:** Advanced Beginner ([click for details](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1PojSi4qdlRsv1msCHhvpQ43iDc4FfzQwpWCc3kafVMY/mobilebasic))
***
### Reminders
**Attendance:**
The waitlist has been growing, so please only RSVP “Going” if you truly plan to attend. Since number of nets is limited, this helps reduce excessive rotations. If you RSVP but don’t show up, it will be recorded as an absence per Smiley Social guidelines. If your plans change, please update your RSVP at least 12 hours in advance.
**Injuries:**
Play with awareness and prioritize safety for yourself and others. Stick to your position and avoid risky plays. If there’s any doubt about who should take the ball, call it early to prevent collisions.
**Game Rules:**
Let’s stick to standard volleyball rules—especially the three-touch rule—so everyone can play effectively and continue improving together.

Project needs vary but often include brainstorming, researching, writing, coding, or analyzing data. Check out [our website](https://www.civictechdc.org/projects) for a list of projects which may make an appearance!
Meet other civic tech enthusiasts. Learn new skills. Contribute to a project to improve a local civic issue. **All are welcome and collaboration is encouraged.** Laptops are recommended but not required.
**Where do I register?**
To better serve our growing community, we’re transitioning our event registrations to Luma!
**We still love Meetup**
Meetup has been an incredible platform for us to build and connect with our community. We’ll continue sharing upcoming events there so that new people can find us, but Luma will be our primary registration platform moving forward.
**Why we're making the switch**
Meetup’s registration system has some limitations, and we need more flexibility to manage sign-ups and engagement.

Phonebank for Janeese Lewis George and Aparna Raj
Please join the DC Electoral Working Group in phonebanking DC members for our chapter-endorsed candidates Janeese Lewis George for DC Mayor and Aparna Raj for the Ward 1 seat on DC Council. Both Janeese and Aparna are relying on grassroots donations to power their campaigns, and DC will match donations from residents 5:1, meaning a donation of $50 turns into $300 for the campaign—enough to pay for a day's worth of literature for canvassing.
Janeese is neck-and-neck with her opponent on donations, who is receiving max donation checks from corporations and wealthy donors. Aparna is about 110 maximum donors (who chip in $50!) away from reaching the public matching cap! Every chapter member you're able to encourage to donate will be critical in getting Janeese and Aparna elected in June.
We will meet in-person, and pizza will be provided. Please bring a charged phone and your laptop. No experience is necessary! We'll have a script and folks there to support you as you make calls!
If you'd like to participate virtually or help make calls asynchronously, reach out to Brandon W on the MDC DSA Slack.
Please RSVP on [Action Network](https://actionnetwork.org/events/phonebank-for-janeese-lewis-george-and-aparna-raj/) to receive further updates on this event.

La Grand Fete 2026 at French Embassy - Ticket Must Be Bought Online!
This is a unique event. More than 20 embassies from countries that have French speakers will have booths with incredible home-made food and interesting wines and beer. The catch is that it's always packed, but there is always plenty of food. So if you like to sample all kinds of foods, enjoy dancing, and don't mind the crowds and the splurge (around $60 including food, and drinks for the first two hours), it is a yummy, fun-filled party with a distinct French accent!
I waited a couple days to post to make sure tickets are still available. It usually sells out pretty quickly. **\*\*Here is [the link](https://smithsonianassociates.org/ticketing/programs/2026lgf?utm_source=wordfly&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=MAR26eMLaGrandeFete3.2.26&utm_content=version_A&promo=287221) to buy the tickets.\*\***
Also it's not a walk-around-with-the-group kind of event, though we will try to meet up later in the evening when the live musical entertainment starts. Just too crowded. The key is to get in line outside as early as possible - by 6 pm if you can. That will give you about 30 minutes of access to all the food booths before it gets nuts.
The annual month-long Francophonie Cultural Festival spotlights the music, art, literature, film, cuisine, and customs of French-speaking countries and regions from across the globe. One of the celebration’s highlights, La Grande Fête is always *magnifique*, and this year’s bash is no exception.
The don’t-miss event is your passport for a world tour of francophone cultures. Starting at 7 p.m., sample food and drink from more than 20 embassies as you explore each nation’s unique attractions and traditions. Participating organizations and countries include France, Belgium, Guinea, Canada, Gabon, Kosovo, Côte d’Ivoire, Morocco, French-American Chamber of Commerce, Tunisia, Québec, Central African Republic, Alliance Française of Washington, DC, Democratic Republic of the Congo—and that’s just the start of the growing list.
This year’s live entertainment features TBD.

With protests, outreach, wheat-pasting, signature collecting, leafletting, lobbying, tabling etc. there’s something to match everyone’s comfort level and skill set.
Coffee, bagels and community will be provided! Feel free to bring any extra treats to share (no animal products please.) Hope to see you soon! :)

U.S. Grand Strategy
As we get further into 2026, the United States faces multiple challenges at once. From a rising China to the ongoing conflict with Russia in Ukraine to escalating tensions in the Middle East, the world seems more on fire now than ever before. Analysts believe that these overlapping crises are testing U.S. strategy all at once. We will discuss which of these issues should take precedence and how different visions of U.S. grand strategy – from primacy to liberal internationalism to selective engagement to restraint – shape American priorities.

Take Control Of Your Life, Freedom From Negative Thoughts & Irrational Emotions
Feeling down? Sometimes depressed? Can't focus? Negativity & stress? Recent losses? Creativity in career and personal life hindered by mental blocks? Sometimes we never fully recover from traumatic experiences.
Whether it was yesterday, last week or a year ago, traumatic experiences - a loss of a loved one, losing a job, a breakup - can leave you scarred. You talk about it and feel a little better, but it never goes away. After you hang up the phone, it's still there; the sadness, the cloud, the over-thinking, the worry, the guilt. You try to focus, but you're blocked. You try to look forward into new experiences, new relationships but a cloud is hanging over you, casting a shadow on what you once considered a bright, cheerful future.
What happened to your courage? Your strength of character? You're 'why not' attitude? Whoever said 'time heals' must have had a special time machine, because after weeks, months, years, you're wondering - when exactly does that kick in? Sometimes it seems like drinking or drugs are the way to go. But they wear off, and now the problem is still there with added side effects from the drugs.
At this free local Meetup event we will talk about:
* What causes grief, anxiety and depression to become chronic.
* Is it possible to regain your joy and happiness even after traumatic experiences?
* How to break away from negativity and focus on the future
* What are the steps to take to get control of your mind and your emotions?
Learn about a safe, gentle, do-it-yourself counseling that can be done in the comfort of your own home.
Let's explore safe, effective solutions for healing from traumatic experiences.
Be sure to click on the red "Attend" button below to come to the event. We look forward to seeing you there.
This group is sponsored by the Dianetics & Scientology Life Improvement Center.
Humanist Program
The Humanist Monthly Program is our longest running event and still a community favorite. In the old days it used to be called "Going to HCCO" and we still like to think of it as our flagship event.
We will be hearing from Becca Powell, Director of Advocacy and Outreach at Unchained At Last, an organization whose mission is dedication to ending forced and child marriage in the United States through direct services and systems change. Unchained At Last's mission clearly meshes and addresses several of our Humanist Ten Commitments. Becca will educate us about an issue many of us may not be familiar with--but should be.
Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk.
Going forward our meetings will be hybrid. You can meet us in-person or attend online

This month we will be discussing **Frank Santoro**, an American cartoonist, painter, and comics critic known for his expressive lines, experimental page layouts, and vibrant use of color. His graphic novels—including *Storeyville*, *Pompeii*, and *Pittsburgh*—blend personal storytelling with innovative visual structure, often exploring memory, place, and relationships. In addition to his comics, Santoro has been an influential voice in comics education and criticism, co-founding the magazine *ComicsComics* and creating the **Santoro Correspondence Course for Comic Book Makers**, which has helped train and inspire a new generation of cartoonists.
Afterwards, we will have time to work on our individual art projects, hang out, and if anyone is interested in feedback on their work, there will be time for that as well.
