We will start on the Cross County Trail access road just north of route 7 near Colvin Run Mill. There are 2 stream crossings: one on rocks *(see picture above when it was uncrossable, it should be lower and crossable on Friday)* and the other on concrete pylons. **Dogs** are permitted on this hike in accordance with the NVHC Dog Policy. We're all ready to start hiking again and next week the Weather is warming. It looks like we will have 3 days of balmy (everything is relative) temperatures to start melting/ softening the snow for the Friday hike day. We will be hiking on cleared trails. There are still occasional patches of packed snow/ice so bring your poles. This is an enjoyable hike with beautiful lakes, wooded trails and even a snack/rest room break at a Starbucks. It is about an 7.8 mile hike with 358 feet of elevation gain around lakes and among the woodlands of Reston. We'll meet in front of the Starbucks at the South Lake Shopping Center at 8:45 am and hike through the Glade Stream Valley and then along Lake Audubon and Lake Thoreau. We hike at a pace of approximately 2.5 mph while moving. You must be experienced with hikes of this length and elevation gain. Dogs are welcome on this hike in accordance with the NVHC Dog Policy. We're resuming open board game nights in a new location. Welcome, hope we can share some time and enjoy some board games. There will be refreshments, but if you'd like to bring a food or drinks to share, feel free. If you'd like to contribute that's fine. Both are optional. The trail begins a short distance from the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, making its way across the Ohio Drive Bridge and heading into East Potomac Park. The tidal basin is beautifully reflective, and the monuments around the whole trail keep it interesting. Parking is available near the trailhead, and additional facilities, including restrooms and drinking fountains, can be found along the trail. The sidewalks along the water are prone to damage and there is often uneven footing.

Our regular Sunday meetup at the Shirlington Dog Park -- members start arriving around 10:15 a.m. You'll always find an Aussie to play with. There are 3 entrances, so wander the park -- the dogs will find each other! For puppies, Shirlington has a small dog park within the larger dog park. It's the prefect place for your puppy to gain confidence and socialize with others. There is also plenty of room to run. Just a reminder, the Dog Park is under attack by the Arlington County Board of Commissioners. While early plans to decrease the size of the park by 50% has been tabled, it's important to remind Arlington County how important this park is to dogs and owners. It’s a mostly flat, multi-use path that follows the Potomac River and Boundary Channel through Lady Bird Johnson Park on Columbia Island. The trail passes the Navy Merchant Marine Memorial and Columbia Island Marina, offering beautiful views of Washington, DC.

For our February Meetup the Shelties will re-investigate Frolick Dogs in Alexandria, which is a climate controlled INDOOR doggie gym with agility equipment to try out! We had a BLAST here in the past and this is the perfect place for a winter meetup! Note: Your dog must have current DHPP/Distemper, Bordatella, Rabies, and Parvo, with papers to prove it. More info at their site below. Our private Sheltie-only event runs from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm. This comes with a cost of $15 per dog and can accommodate up to 20 Shelties. (You pay as you enter.)
