East London Fiction Book Club
A fresh, intentional space for readers in East London who take their fiction seriously. We aren't a social mixer that happens to have a book in the background; we are a dedicated circle of six readers who meet once a month to dissect, debate, and celebrate high-quality literature.
Why Only Six?
We believe the best literary analysis happens when everyone has a seat at the head of the table. By strictly limiting our meetups to 6 people, we ensure:
No one is talked over.
The conversation stays focused and nuanced.
An intimate environment where we can truly get to the heart of the text.
The Reading List
Our focus is strictly fiction only. We explore the boundaries of the craft, focusing on:
Contemporary Literary Fiction (The Booker, International Booker, and beyond).
Modern Classics that deserve a second look.
Translated Works that offer a different lens on the world.
How We Work
When: Once a month on a Sunday
Where: Carefully selected, quiet spots across East London—from Hackney to Bow—where the atmosphere suits a serious conversation.
The Commitment: Because spaces are so limited, we ask that you only RSVP if you are certain you can attend and have finished the book. We dive straight into spoilers and structural analysis from minute one. If you cannot attend, pleaae cancel 24 hours before hand to allow someone else to attend

Akira (1988) in 4K at the IMAX - SOLD OUT
**This screening is now sold out, so if you couldn't get a ticket, try for one of the other dates. The PCC is showing this too by the way.**
Akira is a landmark in animation, endlessly influentual both inside and outside Japan. You've probably seen it. A teen biker gang in Neo Tokyo (as it was called after the nuclear blast) get caught up in a secret military project that involves psychics and mutants. Things end up getting really out of hand.
I wrote more or less the same intro when I put this on [three years ago](https://www.meetup.com/london-alt-gigs-repertory-film/events/292097241/?eventOrigin=group_calendar) and it was showing in 4K in cinemas for the first time in this country. Guess what: it ruled. The colours, movement and sound are all stunning, and now it's showing in IMAX, essentially a cinematic fairground ride for the senses. Wanna reminder in trailer form? SURE you do: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gPnyUo-OXg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gPnyUo-OXg)
We can watch the movie, meet outside and digest it over a drink somewhere nearby afterwards. Hey, it's not like Waterloo is short of pubs.
Scotney Castle, + Bodiam Castle at sunset! - (incl entry to BOTH castles)
**Join us as we visit two of the photographic jewels of medieval England, the landscaped gardens of Scotney Castle and the picturesque Bodiam Castle in West Sussex!**
Bodiam Castle:
**Constructed in 1385** to help protect against invasion from the French during the Hundred Years War, this impressive example of a moated castle provides us with **plentiful composition opportunities** to take advantage of the **beautiful symmetrical reflections** available in the wide moat.
We'll also explore behind the castle walls and ascend the towers to admire the view of the surrounding countryside. Our visit will be timed so we can take advantage of being able to photograph the exterior after the tourists have left, allowing us to capture some iconic shots that would be difficult otherwise.
"Set in the heart of a historic landscape, with spiral staircases, battlements, and a portcullis, 14th-century Bodiam Castle is one of Britain's most picturesque and romantic ancient monuments. Windows where arrows were once loosed, a tower that was once a lookout, and ruins that were once walked upon by knights; this is a place where you can relive your childhood memories and let your imagination run riot.
In the impressive gatehouse is the castle's original wooden portcullis, an extremely rare example of its kind, and beyond into the courtyard, enough of the interior ruins survive to give an impression of castle life."
We'll also visit **12th-century Scotney Castle**, a picturesque country castle ruins set in the landscaped gardens of a manor estate.
**Scotney Castle:**
"In the 1830s, Edward's grandson, Edward Hussey III, transformed the estate. He hired architect Anthony Salvin to build a new house at the top of the hill overlooking the valley. Edward Hussey III had the imagination to transform the Old Castle into a ruin to act as the focus of his new landscape garden.
As a result of his vision, Scotney Castle is now celebrated as one of the most significant survivals of a complete Picturesque landscape."

**Where we'll meet:**
We'll meet at **Starbucks Coffee, Unit 1A** **Euston Tower Podium, Regents Place, London NW1 3DP**, at **9.15 am** (opens at 9.30 am), and we'll talk about what to expect on the day, go through previous photos and discuss settings, composition, etc. We'll be leaving Starbucks at 9.40 am and expect to return to London between 6:00-7:00 pm.
Please make sure you check TFL to arrive at the meeting point on time, as we will have to leave at 9.20 am sharp. Please be sure you can attend before RSVPing yes, as refunds can only be given if your place is taken by another participant. Thank you.

Energizing Walk for Busy People!
Join our weekly walking meetup to have fun, maintain a healthy lifestyle, meet new people, and enjoy nature! We meet Saturdays at 10am, by the bike racks and benches 150 feet in front of BUBBLES Hair Salon in Reston, leaving no later than 10:05.
Every week we'll walk the Green Trail to Lake Anne Plaza (\~1 mile), pause there for 5-10 minutes (water, bio, and from April-Nov a Farmer's Market), then circle the lake (2 miles) before returning to our starting point. It's roughly 3.5 miles and takes about an hour and a half.
Afterwards, some members will often head to a local restaurant to refuel and relax before tackling the rest of the day.
This event is open to all ages and fitness levels, and both friends and dogs are always welcome! We recommend dressing for the weather (umbrella, water bottle, snow shoes, hat, etc.) since we'll always walk, rain or shine.
By signing up, you accept and assume all risks and responsibilities with this activity, and nobody will be held liable.
