Finding Meaning in Life's Difficulties (Free Event)
Is there hidden value in the difficulties and hardships of life, or are these things just to try to get past as quickly as possible? If so, how can we emerge from the current world crisis we are facing as stronger, more resilient individuals and communities?
When we look at the difficult moments of our lives, arenât those often the times when we grew the most? So many valuable lessons in life and growth opportunities are hard-won, often coming out of these trying moments. So why are we so focused on avoiding these difficulties? From this perspective, how would we as individuals and as a society confront the inevitable struggles we will be faced with? How can we build stronger communities that ensure not only that we donât have to face struggles alone, but that we as individuals will emerge stronger as well?
Come join a different kind of conversation â one that welcomes every perspective in a search for the truths that unite us all â as we discuss the spiritual perspective offered by the BahĂĄâĂ Teachings on the opportunity for growth during times of struggle. Join us for a lively discussion as we reflect on the meaning of the struggles of life and explore the true nature of progress.
*âThe troubles of this world pass and what we have left is what we have made of our souls.*â â BahĂĄâĂ Teachings

"Our world is defined by our science and technologyâwhether we like it or not. The question now is not whether to use these powers, but how best to use them. In Superconvergence, Jamie Metzl takes us on a journey through the new capabilities that are radically transforming ecosystems inside us and around us, challenging each of us to get personally involved with building the future we want."âBeth Shapiro, University of California Santa Cruz evolutionary biologist and author of Life as We Made It: How 50,000 Years of Human Innovation Refinedâand RedefinedâNature

âThe superconvergence of the genetics, biotechnology, and AI revolutions provides spectacular opportunities for building a better world. It also represents an almost limitless investment opportunity. We were excited to collaborate with Jamie Metzl, one of the world's great experts on how these aspirations can best be realized, including in capital markets. Superconvergence is a master class for imagining, investing in, and building a future we'd like to inhabit."âJeremy Schwartz, Global Chief Investment Officer, WisdomTree
âA clear examination of a transitional moment in the story of life on EarthâŚ. Metzl capably describes recent developments in genetics and biotech and looks at how AI is providing an analytical engine of unprecedented powerâŚ. An important book in which the author sets out a path for the future based on his experience and expertise.ââKirkus
âErudite, optimistic, and timely.ââScience Magazine
"[In Superconvergence] Mr. Metzl has identified an important truth: that the convergence of new technologies is galvanizing us to reimagine how to meet urgent challenges in medicine and the environment. Discussion Group - Burnt Haystack Method/Pool Party
Let's get together in a warm and open atmosphere to talk about ethical non-monogamy and how we actually do it. Ask for advice, give some in return, meet and mingle with your peers. Let's kick back and get to know each other and learn a few things.
TOPIC: Ah, the Burnt Haystack Method! This system for analyzing and eliminating potential men online has got fans and haters. Tonight, we will discuss the method and whether it is useful, cruel, overly-harsh, or simply effective. Also: what would the Burnt Haystack for men to evaluate women look like? Bring a cold drink because we might get heated.
The location of our group will rotate between VA and MD. This week, we'll be in VA, at the home of a long-time hostess with the mostest and a sweet pool. Bring your bathing suit! And sunscreen! We are living our best lives this summer!
FOOD: It's BBQ/picnic food season. I am beyond excited about the fresh tomatoes and peaches.
Please consider bringing a vegetarian or vegan option; we do currently have active members who need these options. Cut-up fresh fruit is always great! If you don't feel like schlepping, we also always appreciate a donation.
Please note: we share the address on the morning of the meeting, via the messaging/email system here. If you donât have the details by Friday noon, you will need to message us directly to get them.

Discussing "The Reading List" by Sara Nisha Adams
NOW A LILLY'S LIBRARY PICK!
"The most heartfelt read...a surprising delight of a novel."--Shondaland
An unforgettable and heartwarming debut about how a chance encounter with a list of library books helps forge an unlikely friendship between two very different people in a London suburb.
Widower Mukesh lives a quiet life in Wembley, in West London after losing his beloved wife. He shops every Wednesday, goes to Temple, and worries about his granddaughter, Priya, who hides in her room reading while he spends his evenings watching nature documentaries.
Aleisha is a bright but anxious teenager working at the local library for the summer when she discovers a crumpled-up piece of paper in the back of To Kill a Mockingbird. Itâs a list of novels that sheâs never heard of before. Intrigued, and a little bored with her slow job at the checkout desk, she impulsively decides to read every book on the list, one after the other. As each story gives up its magic, the books transport Aleisha from the painful realities sheâs facing at home.
When Mukesh arrives at the library, desperate to forge a connection with his bookworm granddaughter, Aleisha passes along the reading listâŚhoping that it will be a lifeline for him too. Slowly, the shared books create a connection between two lonely souls, as fiction helps them escape their grief and everyday troubles and find joy again.
