LCC Reads: The Black Jacobins (Session 5)
LCC Reads: The Black Jacobins (Session 5)
Join us on the 22nd of December as we finish our reading of Cyril Lionel Robert James’ (CLR James) pioneering historical work of nonfiction, The Black Jacobins (**Chapter 13 and the Appendix: From Toussaint L'Ouverture to Fidel Castro**). 📍 Location: Shirker's Rest, 9 Lewisham Way, London SE14 6PP 🗓️ Date: 22nd of December ⏰ Time: 7:30 The book centres the narrative on the rise of Toussaint L’Ouverture, a former enslaved man who came to lead the rebellion, and tells the story of the uprising of enslaved people in Saint-Domingue that abolished both slavery and colonial rule, leading to the creation of the world’s first Black republic: Haiti. Alongside a detailed examination of the brutal conditions of plantation slavery, The Black Jacobins traces how the revolt became a full-scale revolution and defeated three empires. The Haitian Revolution remains a lasting beacon for Black liberation, anti-colonial, abolitionist and anti-authoritarian struggle around the world. We will be reading the book in five parts, each roughly consisting of around 50 pages. Our final reading will encompass Chapter 13 and the Appendix: From Toussaint L'Ouverture to Fidel Castro The text can be accessed for free here: https://politicaleducation.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/CLR_James_The_Black_Jacobins.pdf Please note, we are committed to making every one of our events welcoming and safe for everybody. Our spaces are non-partisan, but not apolitical. Racism, fascism, sexism, transphobia, homophobia, antisemitism, classism, and any other forms of discrimination based on preference or identity are not tolerated. If you are a victim of bigotry or harassment at any of our events, please raise this with an organizer, who will act appropriately. We broadly follow this code of conduct https://wiki.dbzer0.com/divisions-by-zero/the-anarchist-code-of-conduct/

London Krishnamurti Christmas Dinner & Dialogue!
London Krishnamurti Christmas Dinner & Dialogue!
Our Meetup is open to everyone and anyone interested in self knowledge, self awareness, relationship and discovering a totally new way of living. Here, together over supper, we talk about everyday life topics, in an atmosphere of attentive listening, sensitivity, kindness, openness and friendship. **WHAT TO EXPECT** * This group meets up TWICE MONTHLY to talk over and explore life topics together; such as Fear, Conditioning, Belief, Desire, Attachment etc... * The approach for our investigation is inspired by 20th Century (non religious/ non political) revolutionary thinker, J Krishnamurti. * The atmosphere for our dialogue is relaxed, openminded, serious, compassionate, fun and friendly. * We learn through direct observation, self discovery and careful listening to each other, rather than through already acquired experience or knowledge. **WHO'S IT FOR** * Those wishing to explore deeper issues of everyday life and relationship, in a non therapeutic, non religious but friendly atmosphere. * Those interested in the thinking of J. Krishnamurti, but this is NOT a prerequisite. * Those interested in meeting new like-minded friends. * Those feeling stuck, at a crossroads, or wishing to delve deeper. * All nationalities, cultures and backgrounds welcome. * All ages & diversity welcome. **WHAT HAPPENS AT THE MEETUP** * Our sessions won’t have any fixed theme; we will spontaneously raise a topic at the restaurant. Sometimes we may wish to investigate further into a topic: we can suggest a short K video that we can all view prior to the following weekly session together. * The mood is challenging but non-confrontational, investigative but non-intellectual, contemplative but non-religious and especially serious but also good fun! **NO FEES OR DUES** * We pay for our own meal at the restaurant * There is no charge for the organisation * You can [donate to OPEN DOOR](https://open-door-worldwide.com/donate/) if you appreciate this initiative. **ABOUT OUR GROUP** * This event is organised by [OPEN DOOR](https://open-door-worldwide.com) * OPEN DOOR is a non profit making organisation * Run by [Jackie McInley](https://open-door-worldwide.com/about/) **OTHER SIMILAR EVENTS** * [PLEASE VISIT HERE FOR MORE DIALOGUE & SELF-INQUIRY EVENTS](https://open-door-worldwide.com/events/) **ABOUT J. The Hands that Held Our Chalice: Ancestry, Responsibility, and the Light We Keep
The Hands that Held Our Chalice: Ancestry, Responsibility, and the Light We Keep
**Roberta Wedge** This service will explore how our Arts & Crafts period chalice, once hidden and then rediscovered, connects our congregation to ancestry, beauty, and shared faith. It will trace the story of Judaism in England—from exile to renewal—reflecting on flowing water, light, and responsibility. We inherit not possession but covenant: to honour memory, protect neighbours, and keep the flame alive. *No Kids Club programming until 11th January 2026 due to winter break; all are welcome in the chapel!* Attend either online or in person at the Newington Green Meeting House, 39a Newington Green, London, N16 9PR (fully accessible). Female-only Lesbian Meet & Mingle
Female-only Lesbian Meet & Mingle
A weekly in-person night for drinks and conversation. This is a relaxed evening for chatting, meeting new women, and building real connections. Women come from their 20s to their 60s – some brand new, some regulars. It is usually half new members and half returning, so you will never feel like the only newcomer. Most arrive solo, and we make sure you will not feel it. If you are nervous, the WhatsApp group is the best place to start. Many women join there first, so by the time they come along they already recognise a few names. It is also used for daily chat between events, which makes it easier to feel part of things straight away. Table booking is under the name Jenny. **Register for the Event** You must sign up to attend: [thelcommunity.com/events/lesbian-offline-nights](www.thelcommunity.com/events/lesbian-offline-nights) **Join the Network** Private WhatsApp group: for full members only. Free to join when you [Become a Member](https://thelcommunity.com/register/) **Support the Case** We are building the UK’s first female-only lesbian venue. Southwark Council blocked our lawful application. We are now taking them to court in a landmark Equality Act test case. What happens here will decide whether councils across the UK can keep excluding women-only services, or whether they will finally be forced to obey the law. Contra dance with Big Scioty on Jan 3 - First Congregational Church
Contra dance with Big Scioty on Jan 3 - First Congregational Church
**Caller: Gaye Fifer** **Band: Hot Coffee Breakdown** **Big Scioty Contra Dance** **temporarily returning to our long ago location for Jan-March - First Congregational Church, 444 E. Broad St., Columbus 43215** WHAT IS CONTRA DANCING? Picture the Grand Ball scenes like you’ve seen in period films such as “Pride and Prejudice”, where the dancers are lined up in long lines, across from each other. That’s English Country Dancing, the predecessor of contra dancing. Now, add moves like “swing your partner” and “do-si-do,” like you’ve seen in square dancing. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alá “Riverdance.” Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude. THAT’s Contra Dancing! Wear cool and comfortable clothes (you will get warm) and clean shoes that won't mark up our nice wood floor. Be sure to come for the beginner's lesson from 7:30 - 8:00, followed by dancing 8:00 - 10:30. All dances are taught; we will help you learn! Beginners always welcome, no need to bring a partner. Cost is $10.00 adults, $5.00 ages 12-26. Under 12 free. Free parking in church lot. For more information contact me or check out our website: [www.bigscioty.com](http://www.bigscioty.com/) Please bring your own refillable water bottle. Snacks to share are always welcome!
