Hands-on Lab: Getting started with OpenTelemetry
**BRING YOUR COMPUTERS TO THIS EVENT! And check out the prerequisites below.**
Join us for the first hands-on lab session, snacks, and discussion! This time around instead of talks we are going to run a free hands-on lab on how to get started with OpenTelemetry.
We'll teach you how to run your own local observability stack and how to capture telemetry from the host all the way to the application layer.
**Repository**
https://github.com/grafana/grafanacon2026-opentelemetry-instrumentation
**Prerequisites**
* Git
* Docker and Docker Compose โ or Podman with the `docker compose` CLI, see [PODMAN.md](https://github.com/grafana/grafanacon2026-opentelemetry-instrumentation/blob/main/PODMAN.md) for setup
Pull all Docker images at home before the session to avoid slow WiFi at the event:
git clone https://github.com/grafana/grafanacon2026-opentelemetry-instrumentation
cd grafanacon2026-opentelemetry-instrumentation
docker compose pull
docker compose up --build
The first build downloads images and compiles both services โ it can take several minutes. Once images are cached, rebuilds are fast. See [TROUBLESHOOTING.md](https://github.com/grafana/grafanacon2026-opentelemetry-instrumentation/blob/main/TROUBLESHOOTING.md) in the repository if you hit issues.
**Again special thanks to Nokia and Mark Prosser for hosting us at their downtown office.**

CENTRAL MISSISSAUGA ๐จ๐ฆ - Practical Philosophy Meetup
**๐๏ธ WHAT'S PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY ABOUT?**
Practical Philosophy is a weekly meet-up that brings critical thinkers together for an opportunity to dive deep on a topic, practice communicating, and building a community. All with no โofficialโ philosophy knowledge required! ๐
Practical Philosophy is based on the idea that philosophy should be accessible to all, and not something reserved only for academics. Each week we choose a topic, and the goal is to use the conversation to develop our critical thinking and communication as we explore that topic.
The goal is to help develop our Critical Thinking, Communication, and Community ๐
**๐ HOW DOES IT WORK?**
Each week, we pick one topic and discuss it. The topic for the week is shared, generally in the [Whatsapp group](https://tally.so/r/81LP4A), along with jump-off points to get the conversation going.
When groups get bigger than 7-8 people, itโs important that we break into smaller groups. This way we are able to maintain a conversational flow as opposed to having our meetups feel like a discourse or lecture.
**General Meeting Agenda**
Each Practical Philosophy meet-up follows this general timeline:
* 19:00-19:15 - People arrive and chat, get to know each other before the official start.
* 19:15-19:25 - Meeting introduction, explanation of Practical Philosophy and the topic for the week, read the guidelines and the overview so attendees know what to expect in terms of timelines.
* 19:25-20:45 - Break into small groups - introduce yourselves and general thoughts on the topic, open discussion afterwards. At this point the group can review the โjump-offโ questions as needed, but they are just there to help guide the conversation. Itโs not obligatory to answer them.
* 20:45-21:00 - Bring everyone back together to discuss conclusions of the topic - each group gives a short 1-minute summary. Organizer concludes the meeting and everyone takes a group photo.
* 21:00 - The official meeting is over but itโs a great opportunity to get to know people in a non-structured environment, so we often stick around, chat, and get to know each other.
**๐งงPRICING?**
Practical Philosophy is operated entirely on voluntary donations! If we are meeting in a cafรฉ, buy a beverage! Donations are 100% voluntary, but they help us to bring the gift of deep conversation to people around the world. If you'd like to support, you can [donate here](https://www.zeffy.com/en-CA/donation-form/donate-to-practical-philosophy)!

**๐ WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY**
**๐ฃ** โI feel like Philosophy Club helps someone build their own belief system through a series of perspectives while not promoting whatโs right and wrongโ - Ekam
๐ฃ โI got hooked from day 1 (the topic was authority) and felt it was the right place for me. I feel it is a place where people can go to learn and discuss new perspectives and increase critical thinking and community by interacting with people who might challenge your point of views but at the same time encourage you to have openness and mind flexibility.โ - Daniel
**๐ค FAQ**
* **Do I need to study or read anything to attend?**
No preparation is necessary. This isnโt a study of other thinkers. We want to know what you think about the topic, not what an old philosopher thought. If you have a perspective from a religion or a school of thought to share, throw it on the table and weโll discuss it.
* **Is there a specific philosophy that Practical Philosophy is focused on?**
The goal of our meet-ups is to not have dogmatic discussions, and flex our critical thinking muscles. Because of this, we want to hear from every realm of thought, and don't study a particular school.
* **Is it mostly men that attend?**
Surprisingly, no! Although often, philosophy is seen as a Candelabra affair in a dark room with a bunch of guys, our Practical Philosophy meetups are generally 50/50 between genders, and we donโt meet in any dark rooms.
* **Can I come alone?**
Of course you can, we encourage it :)
* **Can I be late?**
Please don't be! We do have a 15 minute grace period where we allow people to funnel in while we hang out, but after that if you arrive too late, it disrupts the flow of the conversation.
* **Where do you meet?**
The location is posted in Meetup and our [Whatsapp](https://tally.so/r/81LP4A) group for this location. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you join the Whatsapp group! If you want to know what other cities have a Practical Philosophy Club, you can see our chapters on our [website](https://www.practicalphilosophy.club/).

[In-person] Curiosity Cafรฉ โ Grief
Grief is often labelled as a negative emotion to be avoided, if at all possible. But many identify grief as a marker of love โ a continuation or expression of it. And insofar as we experience loss, grief seems like the most fitting response. This suggests that there is something good and important about grief, even if it is painful.
But what *is* grief? When we grieve, whom or what are we actually grieving? And what can our experiences of grief tell us about the value of whom or what we are grieving (or, indeed, the value of grief itself)?
Together, weโll consider what role grief can and should play in our lives, beginning with our lived experiences and ending with an investigation of grief over time. In addition to the questions above, our exploration will be guided by the following:
* Whom or what can we grieve?
* What are the similarities and differences between different kinds of grief?
* Despite being painful, why is grief important?
* Is love worth the pain of grief? Where do you draw the line?
* In your life, what has helped you to grieve? What has hindered your grief?
* What makes grief more or less possible in different circumstances, with access to different resources? Why might it be important for us to make more space for grief?
* How can grief isolate us? How can it bring us together?
* Does grief diminish over time, or do we grow around it?
* Is the point of grief to get over a loss? Can you ever complete grief?
* Why does grief diminish in cases where the person, relationship, or thing continues to matter to us?
Join co-moderators Alexandra Gustafson and Adrian Ma on Tuesday, June 30th, to explore these questions and more.
(This is a discussion-based event intended to provide a space to collaboratively explore the concept of grief, such that we may gain a better understanding of what it is and of our own experiences of it. However, this event is *not* intended to be a place for engaging *in* the process of grieving: although of course this might happen (and itโs okay if it does), please note that the moderators have philosophical and event-leading expertise, but arenโt equipped to provide therapeutic support/emotional counselling.)
**Space is limited!** **Please obtain a โPay-What-You-Canโ ticket from Curiosity Cafรฉ at [this link (click here)](https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/curiosity-cafe-revisited-grief-tickets-1992389203742) to attend this event. You need a ticket to be admitted.** See the above link for more info about tickets and other options including a limited number of free tickets. Come and hang out with us, grab food, and read through our handout from 6-6:30pm. Our structured discussion will run from 6:30-8:30pm with a 10 minute break in the middle.
Hope to see you there!

This event is brought to you by [Being and Becoming](https://beingnbecoming.org/), a Toronto based non-profit. We aim to create community around exploring everyday concepts and experiences so that we may live more intentional, thoughtful, and meaningful lives. We use philosophy as a tool with which we can come to a richer understanding of the world around us.
By offering activities, spaces, and other opportunities for conversation and co-exploration, we hope to enable the meeting and fusion of individuals and their ideas. Everyone is welcome, regardless of background: indeed, we believe the journey is best undertaken alongside explorers from a variety of disciplines, cultures, backgrounds, and experiences.

About the Curiosity Cafรฉ Series:
For those of you who havenโt had the opportunity to join us at our Curiosity Cafรฉs and are wondering what theyโre all about: every two weeks, we invite members of our community to come out to the Madison Avenue Pub to engage in a collaborative exploration of our chosen topic. Through these events, we aim to build our community of people who like to think deeply about lifeโs big questions, and provide each other with some philosophical tools to dig deeper into whatever it is we are most curious about.

PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY - FIFA WATCH PARTY
**\*\*ALERT--UPDATEโCHANGE\*\***
We have decided to change plans for Saturday, July 4th to make it a FIFA watch party instead of a philosophy meetup
The 2 reasons are as follows โฆ we might be rained out & Canada plays its biggest game in its Footballing history (the whole nation might be watching).
So we decided to have a โviewing-partyโ meetup at The Maddy for 1pm on July 4th. Weโll be on the patio on the second floor just outside where the pool table & the washrooms are located. Iโll get there early to claim our space โ itโd be great to have a few of you there to help me do the same (letโs say around 12 noon).
This will be a special moment no matter the result of the game โ come on over to The Maddy & letโs create a beautiful memory with our friends from Practical Philosophy. This is what our community is about โ weโll make it a moment to remember. Letttsss gooooo, CANADA!!!
Mob Programming at Mofer Coffee
Letโs do some coding together at a cafe! No more working alone in the weekend. Here, we write code together. And I mean together together. Not occupying-the-same-space-but-separate together.
Hereโs how it works: Jennifer brings her mobile app project, tells everyone that it is like Pinterest for recipes and sheโd like to work on the nav bar. Paul and Chloe think Jennifer's project is fascinating, and they join the group. They gather around Jenniferโs laptop and work on the nav bar for 2 hours. Jennifer is the one typing out the code while Paul and Chloe research, brainstorm, and offer suggestions.
If youโre feeling stuck on your own project or need a motivation boost, bring it to mob programming!
Want to learn by watching how others code and solve problems? Join someone elseโs project at this event!
Oh and we love your half-done projects that you are a bit embarrassed to share. Absolutely bring those to the event!
**Discord**:
We use Discord to share screen & code snippets during the event. Also feel free to share your projects here before the event!
https://discord.gg/xwjDdVSw3E
**Event policy**:
* We have 0 tolerance for harassment.
* We donโt allow the projects that are not meant to be shared in public such as school assignments, interview tasks, or trade secrets.
* The goal is to write code. We discourage you from pitching business ideas here, doing code reviews, or spending the whole event on planning what to do.
* Please buy a drink, and tip the barista well.

A hand tracker gives you joints, not a gesture.
This talk shows how you get from raw joints to a "thumbs-up" in Unity: the pipeline that cleans up the data, how a gesture becomes a few 0-to-1 values within tolerance, and why orientation matters as much as finger shape.
Includes a live demo of tuning gesture thresholds.

The Completely Series
These meetings will be a building block approach to learning photographic mastery over three disciplines:
Completely Mechanical (CM) - A 13-week series
Completely Exposed (CE) - A 26-week series
Completely Composed (CC) - A 52-week series
All three series will run concurrently and will dovetail as follows:
Q3/26 - CM (Iter 1), CE (Iter 1, Pt 1), CC (Iter 1, Pt1)
Q4/26 - CM (Iter 2), CE (Iter 1, Pt 2), CC (Iter 1, Pt2)
Q1/27 - CM (Iter 3), CE (Iter 2, Pt 1), CC (Iter 1, Pt3)
Q2/27 - CM (Iter 4), CE (Iter 2, Pt 2), CC (Iter 1, Pt4)
That's likely confusing, but essentially, CM offered 4 times in that period, CE offered 2 times, and CC offered 1 time.
**TO BE CLEAR - THERE IS NO CHARGE FOR THESE CLASSES.**
This is an aggressive series, with presentations, homework, group shoots to be added in, likely at LEAST twice a month, image critiques, and an expectation that you are willing to put in the work to elevate your photography significantly. Open to all levels and all equipment levels. Don't let hesitation about your skillset and/or gear keep you from a one-time opportunity.
The group will meet every Tuesday, with periodic exceptions, and we will try to keep as close as possible to the original plan. Obviously, more data is coming and will be published as this is further developed, but now is the time to decide if you want to be a part of this.
Data & Analytics Wednesday - Learning from Everyday Data
**Practical Curiosity: Learning from Everyday Data**
How do we actually get better at utilizing our day-to-day data? Fancy dashboards and complex models might look nice and draw attention, but thatโs not where most of us spend our time. In fact those shiny outputs frequently sit unused, while the real insights are drawn from the analystโs daily practice.
Sometimes itโs as simple and as powerful as noticing that a segment is shrinking, a channel is underused, or certain links keep getting all the clicks. Thereโs many different places that the spark of insight can come from, but you have to keep your head in the data and know where to look.
In this session, weโll explore real-world examples of how segmentation, testing, and click behavior can uncover practical digital marketing opportunities. Youโll leave with inspiration for your own use cases, along with a few simple ways to ask better questions, spot meaningful patterns, and make smarter decisions without overcomplicating it.

Monthly General Meeting
This will be our regular monthly meeting, with a new topic picked each month. Topics to be determined and posted soon.
Stop Guessing: How to Measure and Improve LLM Outputs
Most people use LLMs by feel: ask a question, read the answer, decide whether it โseems good,โ and move on.
That works for casual use. It does not work when you are building software, automating workflows, writing important documents, or relying on AI for anything that needs to be repeatable.
In this talk, weโll look at how to improve and evaluate the inputs and outputs of LLMs using practical measurement techniques. Weโll cover how prompt changes affect results, how to compare outputs, how to build simple evaluation sets, and how math-based methods like similarity scoring can help you move beyond guesswork.
This will be beginner-friendly, so even if you don't know anything about AI, you should get something out of it. However, this will be a little more technical than our intro talks. You do not need to be an AI researcher, but programmers and technically curious attendees will get a lot out of it.
Weโll cover:
* Why โit looks goodโ is not enough
* How to improve prompts by changing the input, context, and constraints
* How to compare LLM outputs more systematically
* Basic evaluation techniques for accuracy, consistency, and usefulness
* How embeddings, cosine similarity, and scoring can help evaluate results
* Where automated evaluation works โ and where humans still need to stay in the loop
By the end, youโll have a practical mental model for treating LLMs less like magic and more like systems you can test, measure, and improve.
LOGISTICS AND PARKING:
The talk starts at 7:00 PM. The first half hour is reserved for everyone to get set up and mingle. Free pizza and drinks!
The cheapest parking option is to find street parking, which will only cost you a few bucks. Otherwise, park in the nearby veteran's museum lot for $8. It's highly recommended you avoid the nearby $15 garage parking.
