Der Mikrobiologe Paul Bálint feiert mit ehemaligen Kollegen in Paris seinen 80. Geburtstag. Er wird geehrt und spürt zugleich, dass die Feier auch ein Abschied ist. Er befindet sich, so sein Freund Steinberg, an der Schwelle zwischen dem „jungen Alter“ und dem „alten Alter“ – einer Phase, in der nichts mehr selbstverständlich ist und sich die Vergänglichkeit in allen Dingen bemerkbar macht.
