First meeting of London "What do we want as a Sustainable Planet?"
The world is in crisis and many people think we've gone past the tipping point and the planet is doomed.
However, there are those who have hope and faith in science that some can survive the polycrisis and get to live in a sustainable society and planet.
But there's a problem... **There's no clear vision of what a sustainable society and planet should be**, and without that destination, how can we set out on the journey to get there?
Please join like-minded people to discuss this. We'll agree an agenda at the start of the meeting.
Bring an open mind, suggestions and perhaps a pad of paper.
**Here are some topics to be covered.**
Please use the comments/chat to suggest other areas for consideration
*Depending on the mood of attendees, the frequency of further meetups can be agreed.*
**WHAT DO WE WANT A SUSTAINABLE SOCIETY AND PLANET TO LOOK AND FEEL LIKE?**
· A planet with clean atmosphere, oceans and soil with systems in place to keep them that way

· Access to healthcare, hygiene and sanitation for all
· Access to quality education for all
· A more responsible system of financial structures which embraces the best of co-operative production, capitalism and other systems
· A safe justice system for all
· Societies which respect for the diversity of opinion, ethnicity, sexuality, religion
· Respect for the natural resources and fragility of Planet Earth and their finite capacity
· Societies where the more fortunate, stronger and healthier help those less strong, less fortunate or less healthy.
· Peaceful co-existence between the varying communities of the planet
**What Freedoms ?**
· Freedom to travel anywhere
· Freedom to worship (should there be limitation such as worship should not be based on destroying the existing system…??)
· Freedom from violence
· Freedom from hate
· Freedom from poverty (how define?)
· Freedom of speech
· Freedom from anxiety about the future
· Freedom from concentration of power
· Freedom to preserve culture and arts

Medical advances, coupled with healthier lifestyles, have extended average life expectancy in the UK from around 69 in 1950 to 79 for men and 83 for women.
Against this background there are those who wish to extend their life indefinitely by various means including:
**Gene Therapy** to *slow* the speed of biological aging by preventing or repairing age-related genetic damage.
**Cellular Rejuvenation** which aims to *reverse* aging and disease by resetting damaged DNA, clearing out dead cells, and restoring youthful function to tissues.
**Cryonics** – a few wealthy people have their bodies/brains preserved through freezing in the hope that they can later be brought back to life and cured of their ailments.
**Digital Immortality** – attempting to upload our brains into computational systems, leaving the biological body behind entirely.
Less dramatically, some of us already achieve a degree of immortality through our lifetime influence as parents, teachers, scientists, artists, philosophers etc. That, like simply passing on one’s DNA, is prone to error and obviously doesn’t come with the first person perspective of being alive.
Other people take an opposite view. They accept their mortality, but do not want to experience the final stages of inevitable decline. Instead they seek medical assistance to die at a time of their choosing. Assisted Dying is a controversial practice that has become legal in many western countries over the last 30 years. (Attempts to change the law in the UK have so far failed.) Switzerland, where assisting suicide for non-selfish motives has never been illegal, is the only country in the world to accept foreign nationals for an assisted death at organisations such as Dignitas and Pegasos. Pegasos is perhaps the most controversial as it believes that “it is the human right of every rational adult of sound mind, *regardless of state of health*, to choose the manner and timing of their death". [my italics]
So how long should we live for?
* To what extent should we be able to choose (or refuse) life extending treatments?
* To what extent should we be able to choose (or refuse) life ending treatments?
* Is it ethical for life extending treatments to only be available to those who can afford them?
* Is it ethical for those who have parented children to seek to live forever (or even for what used to be two lifetimes)?
* Should there be any limits on medical research continually curing lethal conditions, and hence extending life expectancy as long as possible?
* One argument against the introduction of assisted dying is the risk of people being *coerced* into requesting an assisted death. Is there a similar risk of coercion which applies to persuading people to accept life *extending* treatments? If so, does this risk apply to current life-extending treatments such as heart surgery and cancer treatments?
* Similarly, another argument against assisted dying is that people may feel a *duty to die*. Do life extending technologies, (even current ones), run the risk of people feeling a *duty to live*?
* And underlying all of these issues, what are the criteria that make people feel that their lives are *worth* living? What can we learn from the Japanese concept of Ikigai, (discussed in the final part of the Hannah Fry ‘The Future’ episode on longevity – link below)?

Climate Within: in London Climate Action Week
Welcome everyone, we are here with an exciting event at London Climate Action Week (LCAW).
The event consist of two parts. The first part features a role-play called **JoyFuel**, centered on exploring and understanding the root causes of the climate crises. This is followed by a facilitated **discussion and an interactive workshop**, providing space for deeper reflection, dialogue, and collective learning around the same theme.
Objective: Participants will engage with climate science in a tangible and accessible way, combining play, activity, and reflection. The performance also encourages participants to reflect on how our individual actions, lifestyles, and consumption patterns contribute to ecological imbalance.
Part 1. **JoyFuel** is a play that explores Climate Crisis through reflective and deeper questions to understand its roots. The play stages a story of a graduate student (Arjun), who is ambitious and wants to get all the so-called happiness in his life. He looks up to influential figures, including pop stars and business magnates, as his role models. The story peeps through his own life and the lives of his role models who influence a mass of people to lead a life where happiness is synonymous with more consumption. The collective actions, of the characters, driven by bottomless greed negatively impact the environment. This is depicted through the tragic story of a family of Albatrosses, a seabird. One by one, a family of Albatrosses falls silent, become victims of a meal that was never food but the plastic left behind. Similarly, the adverse conditions of Penguins due to change in the climate, particularly the molt stress is also presented. Through these narratives, the play emphasizes human responsibility in creating and perpetuating this crisis, while encouraging inquiry, awareness and collective action towards protecting ecosystems. The play aims to shift the prevalent notion of happiness through consumption and burning Fossil fuel to fueling the joy within - hence JoyFuel.
**Part 2.** **Voice of Earth,** the group discussion and the workshop is an interactive session where the facts about the climate crises will be discussed in detail. In particular, we will scientifically describe the basic terminology associated with climate change like ocean acidification, shifting weather patterns, climate feedback cycles, greenhouse effect etc. For example, through engaging and lively demonstrations, participants will learn about the concept of planetary boundaries, which are the environmental limits within which Earth remains habitable. Crossing these boundaries can lead to serious and potentially irreversible consequences for the Earth To make the experience more engaging, participants will interact with each planetary boundary presented in a human-like form. This approach will help participants better understand the condition of our planet and the importance of these limits.

Royal Institution "Discourse: The speed of life"
This is a **theatre** and **livestream** talk from the **Royal Institution of Great Britain.** Evolutionary biologist **Anjali Goswami** explains why life on Earth has evolved to look like it does, and how new technology is changing our understanding
**ADVANCE BOOKING AND PAYMENT IS REQUIRED FOR THIS TALK.**
**More details and booking instructions on the RI web site:**
**[https://www.rigb.org/whats-on/discourse-speed-life](https://www.rigb.org/whats-on/discourse-speed-life)**
**SUMMARY**
Evolution is a seemingly inconsistent process, switching from long periods of stability to rapid transitions. But what allows some species to survive and adapt to new environments, while others are confined to fossils? Why do some groups diversify into thousands of species, while others remain at small numbers for millions of years? And why do the same forms evolve over and over again in different groups, at different times, and in different places, while many hypothetical forms never evolve at all?
In this Discourse, evolutionary biologist **Anjali Goswami** will explore the evolutionary paths that have led to life on Earth as we know it. Using a wealth of fossil data, she will explain how we can piece together the changing tempos of evolution, and delves into how new technology is allowing scientists to understand evolution like never before. You won’t just need to take Anjali’s word for it – you'll be able to hear the data as well, as the evolutionary record for a variety of species is converted to audio.
This is a theatre and livestream event for an adult audience, where the speakers and audience in our Theatre are joined by our audience online.
**The livestream will go live around 7.20pm, and the talk will begin at 7.30pm. If you register but miss the livestream, the video will be available to you via the same link for two weeks after the event date.**
For more information on livestreams, see the information below, or [visit our FAQs page](https://www.rigb.org/whats/faqs-ri-livestreams). Please use the event link you have been provided with.

Litter Pick - Catford/Ladywell - Waterlink Way (SE London)
Join the Eco Around Community for a litter-pick walk from Catford to Ladywell along the Waterlink Way, facilitated by Biljana.
Waterlink Way connects several parks and green spaces in Lewisham borough, following the Pool and Raversbourne rivers. It stretches 8 miles from South Northwood Country Park to the Cutty Sark ship in Greenwich.
Considered one of South London’s hidden gems, it not only provides an enjoyable route to walkers and cyclists, but it also improves habitats for aquatic wildlife.
While maintained by Lewisham Council, contributing to the Waterlink Way’s extra clear-up would be much appreciated.
**When:**
Saturday, 27 June, from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm
**Where:**
We’ll start from Halfords in Catford and make our way under the Catford Bridge, entering the Ladywell Fields. Following the Ravensbourne River, along the Waterlink Way, we’ll finish the walk exiting on the Ladywell Rd.

Guided Forest Bathing @ THCP
**Introduction**
In our busy city, it can be difficult to find time to slow down and smell the roses! Forest bathing offers you the chance to do just that. Over the course of 2 hours, you will be guided through a multi-sensory exploration of the natural world, giving you time to slow down, breathe, and find peace among the natural world.
**What is forest bathing?**
Forest bathing typically consists of slow walking, mindfulness practices, and resting (seated or lying down) in nature. Remember being a kid and just watching the branches overhead in the breeze?
Originating in Japan in the 1980s, Shin-Rin Yoku or forest bathing, was created as a preventative response to climbing rates of stress in urban areas. Since then, many research studies have shown that even one hour a week spent engaging with nature can significantly reduce symptoms of stress.
**What to expect:**
* 2-hour duration
* Small group size (maximum 6)
* Multi-sensory activities
* Sharing circle (optional)
* Herbal tea offering
* A guide to take care of you, so you can truly relax into the wonder of the natural world
* Phone-free environment
* Opportunity to chat and connect with others (if you would like to)
* **Please note there are no toilets available** \- there are several cafes on Mile End Road with toilet facilities\.
**What to bring:**
* Warm clothes; even on a summer day, spending prolonged time in the shade can begin to feel chilly!
* Shoes with a good grip, and that you don't mind getting dirty
* A journal and pen
* A mug (for tea if you fancy it!)
* Any medications you might need, such as EpiPens or inhalers.
**How much is it?**
This experience is offered on a donation basis; this means you can decide what you can reasonably afford to give. To help you decide, we want to be transparent with our cost breakdown:
* £8.50 - meets the recommended donation to Friends of THCP and contributes to important conservation work
* £12 - covers the above and supports the guide at the minimum wage rate
* £15-20 - pay it forward / supporter option.
You are welcome to give less or more depending on your personal circumstances. **[Make a donation here](https://buy.stripe.com/14AfZg0Gn3qL9Dx86M2VG02)**.
**About your guide:**
Hello! I'm Lizzie, a life-long nature lover. Having been gifted the Kingfisher Concise Field Guide to Animals & Plants of Britain and Europe at the tender age of five, it's perhaps unsurprising that I am happiest outdoors! After several years as a geography teacher and data analyst, I began my studentship as a Forest Bathing Practitioner with Nature and Therapy in June 2025. I have experienced the medicinal influence of nature in my own life when I've struggled with burnout and grief; it's a gift I am keen to share with others.
If you have any questions, please do reach out. I look forward to welcoming you!
**What next?**
Sign up! Then, you will receive a participation form by email with a couple of questions about health and safety; please try to respond before the event, so we can go straight to the trees! Your answers will help us to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone and are encrypted. Our GDPR policy is available on request.

COUNT RMH Housewarmer Volunteering (Ronald McDonald House)
Some trained COUNT volunteers work together once a month at RMH (http://www.rmhc-centralohio.org/volunteer.php) as Housewarmers (usually on the 1st Sunday from 1 – 5 PM). Some schedule other shifts at their convenience. You may try this out with less fuss by following a "Fast track" or go through the normal process.
Fast track
• Arrange a time to shadow a COUNT volunteer. Call Dave Nohle at 614-268-9558 (cell).
• Show up and try it out.
• Complete application, etc. later.
Normal process
• Complete an online application (http://rmhc-centralohio.org/volunteer/).
• Attend orientation in advance.
• At orientation you will complete forms agreeing to keep family/patient info private and allowing a background check and tour the facility.
• Complete one training shift. Daily shifts are: morning 9 AM - 1 PM, afternoon 1 - 5 PM and evening 5 - 9 PM.
• Schedule shifts online using the on the RMH scheduling system (http://www.volgistics.com/ex/portal.dll/?FROM=32895).
The Ronald McDonald House (RMH) provides housing and meals for families with sick children. The Columbus RMH is the largest in the world with 137 rooms. COUNT has been volunteering there since May 2014.
Housewarmers work with RMH guests to provide a home-like environment - greet, assist with family needs, answer phones, give tours, assist with checkin/checkout, prepare guest rooms after checkout, clean facility, laundry, restock supplies and staff the front desk. RMH Housewarmers volunteer at least one four-hour shift a month. All Housewarmers must complete an application and agree to a background check before they can be full fledged volunteers.
