š¦ Hike to Atlantic Grey Seals ā Britain's Wildlife Safari
#################
**This hike is now FULL. If you missed it, we're repeating it on Saturday, February 7. Sign up via the link:**

#################
Weāre off to Norfolk! The seals in Norfolk are truly one of Britain's most special sights. Without any doubt, they're an incredible WOW factor and one that you must see!
On this day hike, we'll walk along the top of the sand dunes and enjoy stunning panoramic views across the North Sea. On our way, we'll pass the much-loved grey seal colony at Horsey Beach, which draws thousands of visitors each year, **particularly between November and March**, when the seals come ashore to breed. There are literally hundreds and hundreds of seals and their pups stretching for as far as the eye can see!
The whole walk is in the Broads National Park ā one of fifteen national parks in the UK. You'll discover its iconic windmills, navigable waterways and broads (man-made, shallow lakes). With over 125 miles of lock-free waterways, the Norfolk Broads have more miles of waterway than Venice or Amsterdam, and are an extremely popular boating holiday destination! Locals like to call the Broads āthe Venice of the Eastā.
šŖ This walk is **suitable for all abilities** ā it is almost entirely flat and done at a very gentle pace to allow us enjoy the nature and take plenty of pictures.
**HIKE HIGHLIGHTS**
* Watch seals and their young from a close distance at Horsey Gap, home to one of the biggest colonies of grey seals in Britain.
* Take a gentle stroll over the vast open expanse of the golden sand dunes of Winterton Beach ā a Nature Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest. The area is a veritable haven for birds and all kinds of wildlife and is widely regarded as having the best sand dunes in Norfolk.
* See the spectacular Horsey Windpump ā the youngest and largest windpump in the Norfolk Broads. It was built in 1912 to pump water out from the surrounding land so that it could be used for farming.
* Discover Horsey Mere, often regarded as one of the most beautiful of the northern broads and famous for its internationally important wildlife.
* Walk the newly opened stretch of the England Coast Path ā a new National Trail around all of England's coast, which once completed will be the longest coastal walking route in the world (4,500 kilometres in length!).

From here our route leads into the tranquil woods and grasslands of the Kentish countryside, reaching **Shoreham** before following the **Darent Valley Path** into the heart of the valley.
The trail takes us into the beautiful **Lullingstone Country Park**, internationally important for its collection of ancient trees. Beech, ash, oak, sweet chestnut and hornbeam all thrive here, with some specimens thought to be over 800 years old. Emerging from the woodland, we arrive at **Lullingstone Castle**, set beside its peaceful lake, before continuing to the site of **Lullingstone Roman Villa** ā a rare survival of a Roman estate house first built around 100 AD.
From here we continue through rolling Kent fields, rewarded with views of the impressive **Eynsford Rail Viaduct**, its nine red-brick arches towering 22 metres above the valley floor.
Our hike concludes in the charming village of **Eynsford**, where we explore the evocative ruins of **Eynsford Castle**, a Norman stronghold built in 1088. With its riverside setting, ancient remains and traditional cottages, the village provides a perfect finale to a day steeped in history and countryside beauty.

Gaslighting & Narcissistic Abuse Recognition BiWeekly Support Group with Heather
Welcome to Gaslighting Recognition & Recovery Group.
**This is a peer-to-peer support group dedicated to recovery from emotional abuse.** **\*\*FOR ESTABLISHED MEMBERS \*\***
Imagine this scenario: Suppose your partner, parent or friend made a little joke at your expense, and it hurt your feelings. Perhaps you thought to yourself āIāll let it slide because they probably didnāt mean it. Or maybe I just misunderstood. Itās just not worth the consequence of having this argument.ā But as days and weeks pass, the buried emotions resurface, demanding to be dealt with. So you decide to express your feelings to this person, only to hear this response:
*"Wow, you're so sensitive that I can't even joke with you anymore. I didn't mean it like that, but of course you need to make me look like a jerk. Why are you bringing this up NOW? I've moved on, but I guess you just can't let go of the past. I don't understand why you get offended so easily. You said you loved my sense of humor, but I guess my jokes just arenāt funny anymore. I mean, I could sensor myself for you, but how sad it is to be silenced and forbidden from being myself? You must not love me for who I am. You have sloppy habits and mental health issues, but I love you anyway. So why can't you just accept me for who I am? Maybe I should just go away. If you want me to go away, just tell me, and I will. Free yourself and finally be rid of me.ā*
This is a DARVO, and it's also gaslighting. It is word salad nonsense designed to leave you feeling confused, tongue tied and self-blaming. Although subtle and difficult to detect, gaslighting can present this way. Perpetrators are skilled in evading detection, and nearly impossible to identify without external support.
Gaslighting isnāt ājust a pop psychology term.ā Itās a very real form of emotional manipulation that often flies under the radar because weāve been conditioned to see it as normal. This is especially true if we grew up amidst toxic family dynamics. Weāve learned to doubt ourselves before questioning someone elseās behavior. We say, *āMaybe Iām just too sensitive.ā* Or *āMaybe Iām overreacting.ā* And thatās exactly how gaslighting works ā it teaches us to question our intuition, doubt our own emotions, silence and shrink ourselves, making us more digestible for the other person.
But no ā you are not ātoo sensitive.ā You are not ābeing defensive" or "unable to handle constructive criticism.ā You are having a normal human response to emotional abuse. Gaslighting thrives in the disguise of normalcy, often framed as ācare and concernā or ājust trying to helpā. And the first step in dismantling it is naming it for what it is: emotionally abusive. Itās not your fault, not imagined, and definitely not normal.
This group is a safe space dedicated to supporting one another as we confront the faulty, gaslit self-concepts imposed upon us by others. Together, we can practice self-compassion, reclaim our voices and empower ourselves. This group offers support for every stage of recovery.
This group runs 6PM EST- 7:30PM EST (5PM-6:30PM CST, 3PM-4:30PM PST AND 11PM-12:30AM BST) **every other Saturday**
I did schedule this group with the assumption that those attending are well-versed in gaslighting but would still like to provide a brief definition for anyone who may be uncertain;
*Gaslighting is an intentional, subtle, psychological manipulation tactic where the perpetrator plants seeds of doubt in the victim's mind. This leads the victim to question their perceptions, memories, feelings, abilities, and even their mental health. The perpetrator is often a person with high narcissistic **and*** *sociopathic traits. Itās designed to evade detection and is therefore one of the most insidious tools in the pathological narcissist's arsenal.*

CLIMB MOUNT KENYA & WILDLIFE SAFARI
**Backabush has some exciting plans for another expedition. This time we are heading for Kenya, to the trekkers summit of Africa's second highest mountain!**
Point Lenana is our goal at **4985m** where we hope to arrive as the sun rises over the central plains of Kenya.
When bagging high African summits most people head to Kilimanjaro but the journey up Mt Kenya has far fewer crowds and is arguably a much more interesting hike. As with many mountains, not all paths up are equal. We will take the Chogoria route, led by our expert local team. This route is the most scenic and varied in its landscape so we can experience the most beautiful sides of this magnificent mountain.
We will spend 6 days and 5 nights camping on the mountain, descending on the opposite side along the Sirimon route, sleeping in tents along the way. We will be supported by our experienced team of guides, cooks and porters. Our local team will also provide us with all the camping equipment we need.
**Difficulty**
Our first days on the mountain will be shorter than average hiking days whilst our bodies adapt but **BE WARNED**; the summit day will be a massive challenge, hiking for 12 hours at high altitude with a 2.30am wake up call so we can reach the summit for sunrise.
**Weather**
On safari it will be - yes you guessed it - warm. January is one of the best times to climb Mt Kenya as it's in the dry season so clear skies are much more likely but **as we approach the summit it will be very cold**. Snow is not uncommon and at our high camps we may encounter temperatures as low as -10 at night. So its thermals, fleeces and down jackets at top.
**Acclimatisation**
This has to be considered carefully. Our plan is to gradually ascend, spending 6 days on the mountain so we have time to properly acclimatise and enjoy our hike. Many companies offer 5 day, and even 4 day itineraries but as we will be travelling from almost sea level in the UK this would put us at too high risk of experiencing altitude sickness. With an extra day we should be able to enjoy our trek much more.

**SAFARI -** We couldn't possibly plan a trip to Kenya without taking some time to experience some of the best wildlife spotting opportunities in the world. After our tough mountain hike we have planned a 3 night safari staying in comfortable lodges so we can shower, rest and recover from our trek.
First we will stay for 2 nights in the **Samburu National Reserve**, a vast expanse of remote pristine wilderness, bordering the Ewaso Ng'iro River. This area is home to elephants, lions, zebras, ostriches, giraffes, as well as leopards, cheetahs and more.
We will then travel to the **Ol Pejeta Conservancy** for another game drive where will also stay the night in a safari lodge. This is a not-for-profit protected area home to **'the big 5'** which has incredible bio diversity and some hugely effective conservation projects. It is regarded as an example of how safari tourism can have a positive impact on the local communities as well as the wildlife populations. Check out their great work here: [https://www.olpejetaconservancy.org/](https://www.olpejetaconservancy.org/)
In Ol Pejeta we will also visit the Jane Goodall Chimpanzee Sanctuary for chimps rescued from the bushmeat trade. While visiting Ol Pejeta we also have the opportunity to **experience a night time game drive**, a truly unique experience in the dark to spot the nocturnal wildlife with the park rangers. This is $75 USD extra.
**Accommodation**

* 2 nights at Sopa Lodge Samburu, with a pool, outdoor dining and lounge room. Shared twin rooms.

Mile End - Semi-Circular Green Walk to Hackney + (optional) Pub
This walk goes south initially, then loops around the Regents Canal to The Hertford Canal. We'll divert through the lovely Victoria Park, go back onto the canal further down, and then off through London Fields to Hackney. Its about a seven mile walk, we'll have a coffee somewhere pleasant on the way, and finish at the Wetherspoon for some well deserved food and/or drink.
I plan to be at the pub around 3-3.30pm. We can get a train back to Stratford afterwards, or to anywhere else you need to get to. The station is just a short walk from the pub, for those not wanting to come in.
We're meeting outside Mile End station at 11am, where we'll be moving off fairly promptly.
If you haven't already paid for January, I ask for a nominal contribution of £2 to help cover Meetup organiser fees. £1 and £2 coins only please - if you do bring silver, you will be asked to go off and change it.
RISK WARNING/DISCLAIMER: Please remember that as with any physical activity, there can be dangers associated with hiking/walking, especially around waterways, forests, farms and countryside. Please dress appropriately, including sturdy shoes. Please bring any necessary medication with you. You will need to be sufficiently fit to walk several miles at a moderate pace. We may occasionally cross or walk short distances on roads; country and woodland tracks can be muddy or slippery; animals may be encountered on occasion.

GUESTS: If you are bringing any guests along, there is no facility on the Meetup site to record their details. Please ensure that you make them fully aware of the Risk Warning/Disclaimer and Insurance statements.
Postcolonialism: A Very Short Introduction
As a reader, you may be familiar with your own historical context, but does that mean you have a clear understanding of the literature of your own culture? Read, for instance, *Middlemarch* by George Eliot, without understanding Victorian reform politics, class rigidity, and the slow transition from old to modern England, and it risks being misread as a purely psychological or moral novel.
This is where colonialism, postcolonialism, and neocolonialism come into play when reading the world. Without a basic grasp of how the world has been shaped over the last hundred years, world literature cannot be adequately framed in its broader historical context.
It is for this reason, and because I am preparing to enter SOAS University, that the theme of 2026 will focus on these areas. The alphabetical order will be interrupted, but as soon as I finish my MA, we will get back to Barbados.
We left it off at Bahrain before we jumped to India, so from Bahrain I will be proposing the following reading list. I hope I can keep up with all this reading as I have to prepare for my course and the Spanish and French reading clubs, so just in case I cannot keep up, I would like to warn you beforehand that I am not promising anything.
2026 Colonialism/Postcolonialism/Neocolonialism
To develop a comprehensive understanding of the interconnected themes of colonialism, neocolonialism, development, justice, and economics worldwide, I suggest the following sequence:
1-*Postcolonialism: A Very Short Introduction* by Robert J.C. Young
2-*Contested Modernity: Sectarianism, Nationalism, and Colonialism in Bahrain* by Omar H. AlShehabi
3-*Sultanaās Dream* by Rokeya Sakhawat HossaināBangladesh
4-*The Opium War: Drugs, Dreams and the Making of China* by Julia Lovell
5-*Rickshaw Boy* by Lao SheāChina
6-*The* *Motorcycle Diaries* by Che Guevara
7-*One Hundred Years of Solitude* by Gabriel GarcĆa MĆ”rquezāColombia
8-*How Europe Underdeveloped Africa* by Walter Rodney
9-*Heart of Darkness* by Polish author Joseph ConradāCongo
10-*The Wretched of the Earth* by Frantz Fanon
11-*Homegoing* by Yaa GyasiāGhana
12-*Why Nations Fail: The Origins of Power, Prosperity, and Poverty* by Daron Acemoglu and James A. Robinson
Some texts such as *One Hundred Years of Solitude* and *Sultanaās Dream* exceed colonial explanation and draw heavily on local myth, narrative experimentation and internal class and gender dynamics. Acemogluās institutionalist economics often *clashes* with dependency theory and postcolonial critiques. This is to say that colonialism will not be the only lens through which we will discuss these readings.
We will continue with these themes in 2027 and cover the Indian subcontinent, North America, Orientalism, Soviet imperialism, and other areas of Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Let's Discuss... The feeling of time?
As life passes and things change, we may feel the good parts of our life have passed us by, and we search to bring that feeling back.
How do you experience time and the passage of time? What can we do to recreate the good parts of life again? And can we even do that?
Maybe the question isn't how to recreate the good parts, but how to recognize we're living in what will become a good part right now. Years from now, you'll look back at this period with the same nostalgia you feel for the past.
Are you missing the actual past, or the feelings you had during it?
What would it take for today to feel like a "good part" of your life?
Is something genuinely missing from your life now, or have you stopped noticing what's good?
