Timor, Leste Go! | Journey Across East Timor (via Bali)
Timor, Leste Go! | Journey Across East Timor (via Bali)
**Imagine a place where the sun rises over mist-wrapped mountains, the ocean glows electric turquoise**, and the only thing crowding the beach is a curious sea turtle. Welcome to Timor-Leste, the secret half-island paradise that time and mass tourism forgot. Located 600 km north of Australia, this is **Southeast Asia’s wildest, youngest country**. The world’s newest democracy, born in 2002 after centuries of Portuguese spice traders, revolutionary spirit, and a hard-won fight for freedom. The scars of the past are still healing, but that only makes the beauty feel more raw, more real, more alive. Here, Catholicism dances with ancient animist beliefs, Portuguese fades into melodic Tetum, and every smile feels like it’s been waiting just for you. Roads wind through coffee plantations and jungle-shrouded hills, then suddenly drop to idyllic white sand beaches where dolphins play just offshore. Only 30 km across glittering straits lies **Atauro Island, a laidback jewel** with 9,000 souls, zero traffic lights, and some of the healthiest coral reefs on earth. Snorkel straight off the beach, hike volcanic ridges at sunrise, then kick back with a cold one while fishermen grill the day’s catch under the palms. And that’s just the warm-up. On this Trekkup, we’ll **chase sunrise from the summit of Mount Ramelau (the highest peak in Timor), wander forgotten coastal villages, swim in hidden lagoons**, and discover places most travelers will never hear about. No crowds. No resorts. Just pure, uncut tropical freedom and the friendliest welcome in Asia. Ready? **Leste GO!** **Day 1 :: Dili** Arrive in Dili, complete immigration formalities, and check in at the hotel followed by a welcome lunch. In the afternoon we visit the vibrant Tais Market, then head to the impressive Cristo Rei statue (third tallest in the world) and the nearby 6-metre statue of Pope John Paul II. For a taste of local culture we can stop at a traditional cockfight. We end the day with sundowners and relaxed beach time at Areia Branca before dinner. **DAY 2: HATUBUILICO – MAUBISSE** After breakfast and hotel check-out, we depart for the highlands with panoramic views over Dili, the bay, and Atauro Island on the horizon. We pause at the serene WWII Memorial, then continue to the historic town of Aileu for lunch at a scenic vanilla farm. The drive continues through rolling green hills and coffee plantations until we reach charming Maubisse. In the evening a traditional welcome ceremony awaits, complete with warm local hospitality. **DAY 3: MT. RAMELAU** Early wake-up, and depart to the trailhead of Mount Ramelau (2,963 m), Timor-Leste’s highest peak. The steady 2 hr ascent brings us to the summit in time for a spectacular sunrise. Cheer up the sunrise with few selfies, descent and reaching the base by mid morning. Return to the guesthouse for breakfast and a quick refresh, then drive back toward Dili with a refreshing stop at Dokomali Falls – a hidden gem where clear mountain water cascades into a natural pool surrounded by lush jungle, perfect for a cool swim, and a light picnic before continuing to the capital. Overnight in Dili. **DAY 4: ATAURO** Morning transfer to the port and a scenic ride to Atauro Island. After settling in, we spend the day snorkelling over vibrant coral reefs and exploring the laid-back main village. Fresh seafood lunch, relaxed beach time, and the gentle rhythm of island life take over. **DAY 5: ATAURO** Breakfast at leisure, followed by a boat trip along the untouched western coast to snorkel at Atekry, Adara, and Iliana are some of the healthiest reefs in the region. Swim with tropical fish and possibly sea turtles, enjoy lunch on a quiet beach, and soak in the serene surroundings. In the late afternoon beachside bonfire, fresh grilled seafood, local music under an endless starry sky. **DAY 6: DILI** Morning boat back to the capital. Ease into the day with authentic Timorese coffee, warm sweet breads, and sasoru grilled corn. Free time for final souvenir shopping at the markets or one last swim. Final overnight in Dili. **DAY 7: DEPARTURE TO BALI** Breakfast and transfer to Dili airport for the short flight back to Bali and onward connections home. You may find yourself already planning your return before the plane even takes off. **Level of difficulty:** Easy and relaxing. **Activities:** Trekking, boating, swimming, sightseeing, snorkelling, optional diving. **Cost:** **7710 AED** excl. flights to JAKARTA / BALI, **incl. connecting flights Bali - Timor**, **until MAY 20.** **Past this date cost will change.** **Accommodation & meals:** Local 4 star hotels + 1 night guesthouse and beach resort - double sharing. Sushi on Shikansen | Journey Across Japan
Sushi on Shikansen | Journey Across Japan
If there is anything the Japanese know how to do perfectly, it is to **fuse tradition with modernity**. Japan needs no introduction, as it is perhaps one of the most emblematic places on this planet, where **authenticity is still sacred – be it ancient or modern**. Japan is a place where the future entwines with the past – from neon lights and **ancient temples, to manga, geishas and samurais**. A land of stark contrast, renowned simultaneously for its dangerous natural phenomena and cherry blossoms, unmatched in beauty by the rest of the world. **A festival for any traveler’s senses, Japan awakens the soul to maximum** expression with the elegant beauty of its temples, laying hidden away from the bustling streets of its metropolises. The idyllic backdrop for an aromatic journey spanning gardens to gastronomy. For centuries, Japan was closed to the world. Until the mid-nineteenth century it did not have much contact with civilisation beyond its borders, as the Japanese were banned from traveling abroad. Isolation meant that when the preservation of native culture and tradition met modernity, they produced an eclectically unique blend of past and present, in a way like no other. **Day 01: ARRIVAL** Welcome to Japan! Today we clear immigration at Haneda Airport and check into the hotel. Following a short briefing, you can choose to either rest or hit Tokyo’s famous nightlife scene. **DAY 2: TOKYO** After breakfast we head out to explore Tokyo by train. Following a quick look at the Imperial Palace, we’ll make our way to the Sensoji Temple. **Today we grab a lunch watching a sumo match!** Next, a walk down Odaiba, a high-tech entertainment hub... **DAY 3: TOKYO – Mt. FUJI – KISO** Today we take a coach for a scenic ride from Tokyo to Oshino Hakkai, a beautiful village known for its crystal-clear spring water pools and traditional thatched-roof houses. We will take our time to stroll around, visit the shops, and appreciate the natural beauty of the area. Further on we move to Mt. Fuji 5th Station. This is the starting point for many climbers and offers stunning panoramic views of Mt. Fuji.... **Day 04: KISO VALLEY TREK** Today we stretch the legs on legendary Kiso Valley trail to enjoiy its natural beauty and numerous historical sites of the valley sandwiched between the Central Alps and the active volcano Mt Ontake. From there we transfer to Kyoto – to witness the Japanese fusion of tradition and modern culture. **Day 05: KYOTO & GEISHAS** Starting city tour from Arashiyama Area. The iconic Togetsu Bridge can’t be missed. Also, Bamboo Forest is a must-visit. Next is Kinkakuji Temple, the golden pavilion. Its picturesque scene is come from the muddy lake under the building that emphasizes the beauty of gold. We will then meet with Maiko lady and experience traditional tea ceremony. After learning about Japanese green tea, we will move to Nishiki Market. Besides many local food stores, there are many tea stores. Try finding your favorite one if interested. Going back to the hotel and spend your time for own leisure. **DAY 6: HIROSHIMA** Today we take famous bullet train “Shinkansen” to Hiroshima. Riding faster than a plane during take-off, at almost 300kmh, we will reach in about 1.5 hrs. We will start heading to Peace Memorial Park. This park is dedicated to the memory of the victims of the atomic bombing in 1945. **DAY 7: NARA – Mt. KOYA** From Kyoto, we head to Nara, which is just a short ride away. Nara is famous for its free-roaming deer in Nara Park, where you can feed and interact with them. Don't miss the Todaiji Temple, home to the Great Buddha, one of the world's largest bronze statues. **DAY 8: Mt. KOYA - OSAKA** Early morning service at the temple in Mt. Koya. This will give us a unique opportunity to witness a traditional Buddhist ceremony and experience the peaceful atmosphere of the mountain. After the service, you can participate in zazen meditation, which involves seated meditation to help calm the mind. Head to Okunoin Temple, the most sacred site in Mt. Koya. In the evening, board a coach for the transfer to Osaka, conveniently located near Mt. Koya. Osaka is a vibrant city known for its modern architecture, bustling shopping streets, and delicious street food. Once we arrive on our last evening we can explore popular areas like Dotonbori or Minami (Namba), known for their vibrant nightlife and iconic food signs. Sadly we have to say Sayonara Japan, but hey - until we see you again! Airport drop off to Osaka airport for return flight home. **Duration:** 8 days **Level of difficulty:** Easy - available for everyone. **Activities:** Trekking, boating, sightseeing, cultural immersion. **Cost: AED 9,930** **excl. flights until MAY 20th.** **Flights:** by Emirates, DXB-NRT + KIX-DXB. **Visas:** Most passports receive visa upon arrival, simplified visa for UAE residents. **Accommodation & meals:** Breakfasts included, accommodation in 3-star hotels, double sharing. Wild Russia | Spring in Kamchatka, Russia
Wild Russia | Spring in Kamchatka, Russia
**Between the jagged ridges of the Vachkazhets Mountains and the expanse of the Pacific Ocean lies Kamchatka,** an untamed peninsula long considered **the very** **end of the world.** This is a place that exists in adventurers’ wildest dreams: a land where volcanoes breathe, glaciers carve into the earth, crystalline rivers flow through endless forest, and nature puts on a show that never gets old. Tucked away in the far east of Russia, this wild land is just a stone’s throw from Alaska across the Bering Sea. Once an exclusionary military zone, **Kamchatka remained closed to the outside world for decades**, and has only recently started welcoming curious travelers. That long isolation has kept it astonishingly pure, a rare frontier where the modern world still feels refreshingly far away. Here, **more than 300 volcanoes** **rise dramatically from emerald forests and golden tundra.** Dozens of them are still alive and rumbling. Snow-capped peaks tower above steaming valleys, giant Stellers sea eagles ride the winds, orcas glide through icy coastal waters, and king crabs rule the seabed. Keeping watch over it all is the true king of Kamchatka, the mighty brown bear. This season, we invite you **deep into the soul of southern Kamchatka**. We will conquer the landscapes in sturdy off-road trucks, raft down sparkling rivers, sail into the open Pacific, and soar by helicopter over smoking volcanoes and hidden geyser fields, reaching places few humans have ever set foot upon. In a single day you may wander from flower filled alpine meadows to bubbling geothermal wonderlands, bathe in wild hot springs, and watch salmon leap while brown bears fish just metres away. **In Kamchatka, nature is not merely scenery,** **but a living force.** You can feel its warm breath rising from the ground, hear its heartbeat in the roaring rivers, and taste its untamed spirit in the salt air and wild berries. **This trekkup is far more than a journey**. It is a rare and privileged immersion into one of the planet’s last great wildernesses, a land of fire and ice, bears and boiling springs, where the forces of creation still shape the earth before your eyes. Here, as we stand on the edge of the world, every moment reminds us how small we are, and how deeply alive we can feel when we stand face to face with raw, untamed nature. **Welcome to Kamchatka. Let’s go!** **DAY 1 // Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky & Paratunka** Following our 6-hour domestic flight across the endless Siberian skies, we’ll arrive in **Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky**. A quick drive will take us to our cozy hotel, where we’ll freshen up and have free time to take it easy, beat the jet lag, and get super excited for the days ahead! There’s the option to stroll around the historic centre of the town or head straight to **Paratunka** and its natural banya (hot springs) for a relaxing soak, in true Russian style. **DAY 2 // Starichkov Island sea trip** This morning we head straight to the seaport, jump on a boat and **head out of Avacha Bay into the Pacific Ocean**. Gliding past the silent sentinels of the Three Brothers rocks, we’ll pass weather-beaten Babushkin Kamen Island, and round the edge of Cape Stanitsky, where the sea opens to reveal **Starichkov Island**. This living sanctuary is a bird paradise, where thousands of puffins, guillemots, cormorants, and murrelets swoop and soar through the skies, watched by the seals and sea lions lounging on the rocks. What could make this day even more perfect? A delicious lunch! In our first introduction to regional delicacies, we’ll **feast like kings on fresh Kamchatka king crab**, flounder and rockfish. Heading back to port, we’ll stop at the city museum before wrapping up the day. **DAY 3 //** **ATV trip to Vilyuchinsky Pass & Dachnye Hot Springs** Today we jump on our ATVs and head straight into the wild volcanic landscape, our hair blowing in the wind. First stop is the **Vilyuchinsky Pass**, offering the stunning sight of a chain of nine volcano tops stretching out into the distance. On to **Dachnye Hot Springs**, known as the Mini Valley of Geysers, where hot mineral waters spill from the base of Mutnovsky volcano. An easy trek will get us up close and personal with the geothermal madness: steaming vents hissing like angry kettles, bright orange and yellow mud pots bubbling away, and colourful mineral deposits that look like someone spilled paint all over the ground. The air is thick with the sharp bite of sulphur. Hear the Earth breathing: slow, deep, and so alive! Hungry? A picnic amid this geothermal bonanza just hits different. A selfie with sandwich surrounded by steaming vents and bubbling pots will make it unforgettable! **DAY 4 // Snowmobile trip to Avachinsky Volcano** Today it’s time to stand face-to-face with the mighty Avachinsky, an active stratovolcano standing more than 2700 meters above the tundra. We’ll hop on our snowmobiles and roll up to base camp right on time for a tea break. We’ll explore this black and white playground further, feeling the how small we really are in this valley between the looming Avachinsky and Koryaksky volcanoes. Back to base camp for another round of hot tea before calling it a day and heading back to civilization. ALTERNATIVE direction (depending on the road conditions): **The Mayachny Cape.** **DAY 5 //** **Meet the locals & Ozerki** **thermal waters** Today we step away from the volcanoes and focus on **the human element of Kamchatka**, a place where the Koryak, Itelmen and Even peoples live in harmony, thriving in one of the harshest environments on Earth. We’ll learn how they’ve survived in this wild land for thousands of years: reindeer herding, fishing, and continuing shamanic traditions. Expect stories, songs, maybe a quick dance performance, and the chance to try on real national costumes for some epic shots. The highlight will surely be the kennel full of **energetic Kamchatka huskies** and other northern breeds. You can pet them and even try driving a dog sled yourself if you’re feeling brave! In the afternoon, we’ll head to **Ozerki** for today’s grand finale: bathing in the natural thermal radon water swimming pool. Silky-soft, pleasantly warm and therapeutic, any soreness or stress will instantly melt away. As we float, muscles turning to jelly, the cold Kamchatka air numbing our faces… this will be an experience we never forget. **DAY 6 // Optional activities** Free time at leisure for optional activities. **DAY 7 // King crabs & volcanic sands** For our final day, we’re going full Ocean Mode, meaning crab fishing and volcanic Pacific shores. After breakfast we’ll head to Avacha Bay, jump on a motorboat and commence our **hunt for Kamchatka king crab straight from the icy sea**. Back on shore, the crew will boil up the massive spiky legs right there in seawater. We’ll continue on to the legendary **Khalaktyrsky black sand beach**, walking barefoot on the dark volcanic sand with the Pacific waves crashing beside us. Wild, cinematic, unreal are the words to use here. On the way back to hotel, we’ll have time for a shopping haul at the fish market – think smoked fish, caviar, and souvenirs – before heading back to the hotel. **DAY 8 // Departure** Departure day. Airport transfer, bye bye Kamchatka! **Duration:** 8 days + flights. **Activities:** trekking, boating, snow mobile riding, geothermal bathing, crab fishing. **Grade:** Easy to moderate **Room & Meals:** 4\* hotels, double sharing. Trails & Ales! Blendon Woods Metro Park / Forbidden Root Restaurant & Brewery
Trails & Ales! Blendon Woods Metro Park / Forbidden Root Restaurant & Brewery
**History** The history of [Blendon Woods Metro Park](https://www.metroparks.net/parks-and-trails/blendon-woods/) began long before its 1951 opening, rooted in a landscape of rugged ridges and deep ravines that made the land unsuitable for traditional farming. In 1945, a report proposing a metropolitan park system for Franklin County specifically highlighted these cliffs of Bedford Shale as some of the "wildest land in the vicinity". Following this recommendation, the recently formed park district purchased the first 229 acres in early 1949. Because the terrain was so uneven, developers had to cut a mile-and-a-half-long roadway through dense woods just to bring in heavy equipment. This initial preservation effort ensured that the mature second-growth hardwood forests remained largely untouched by the urban expansion spreading toward Westerville. Opening day arrived on Labor Day, September 3, 1951, marking Blendon Woods as the second park in the Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks system. The final push to open was a frantic race; the State Highway Department only finished the primary gravel access road four days before the gates opened. Early staff members, consisting of just four full-time employees, had to hand-dig pit toilets and learn construction skills on the fly to build the first picnic shelters. Despite the dusty conditions and limited facilities, the park was an immediate success, drawing massive crowds from across Central Ohio. By the end of the 1950s, annual visitation had already climbed to over 190,000 people. As the surrounding suburbs grew in the 1960s, the park faced severe overcrowding that threatened its natural habitats. In response, Franklin County voters passed the first Metro Parks levy in 1960, providing the funds necessary for a decade of steady expansion. During this era, the park nearly doubled in size, growing from 264 acres to over 570 acres by 1968. Planners also addressed a critical water shortage by collaborating with the U.S. Soil and Conservation Service to build a lake in 1964. This body of water originally served as a temporary reservoir before its role shifted toward conservation and wildlife support. The 1970s marked a transition toward the specialized wildlife and educational focus for which the park is known today. In 1971, the Walden Waterfowl Refuge was established around the 11-acre Thoreau Lake, creating a sanctuary that remains restricted to provide a quiet habitat for migratory birds. A formal nature center was also developed during this period, expanding on the guided Sunday walks that had been a park staple since the early 1950s. The park’s famous "Monarch Mansion" also became a prominent fixture, starting a long tradition of raising and releasing thousands of monarch butterflies each September. These initiatives cemented the park’s reputation as a premier destination for birders and nature enthusiasts. In more recent decades, Blendon Woods has continued to modernize while maintaining its wilderness character. The 10-acre Natural Play Area was added in 2017, encouraging kids to explore the ravines and woods off-trail. This was followed by the opening of a $1.5 million inclusive playground in April 2025, designed to accommodate children of all physical abilities. The nature center also underwent major renovations to include immersive, three-dimensional exhibits and a new butterfly house. Today, the park encompasses 653 acres, preserving a unique geologic and biological corridor amidst the bustling Westerville and Northeast Columbus area. **Map of the Park** Here is a map of [Blendon Woods](https://www.metroparks.net/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/BLN_map_Inclusive-Playground-and-Butterfly-Trail_May-2025_1980px.png). **Summary** For this event, we will hike the Lake View, Hickory Ridge, Ripple Rock, Overlook, Brookside, and Sugarbush Trails. This sounds like a lot, but it will really be only a little over five miles. Blendon Woods has a few hills here and there, but it's not one of the more strenuous metro parks. **Where We'll Meet** We'll meet just in front of the Nature Center. This is about a mile into the park from the main entrance. You have to go past the Ranger Station and the Shadblow Reservable Area to get to it, so don't stop too early at the Ranger Station and get it confused with the Nature Center. **After the Hike** Afterward, we will head over to [Forbidden Root Restaurant & Brewery](https://forbiddenroot.com/restaurants/columbus-ohio/) at Easton for [drinks](https://forbiddenroot.com/restaurants/columbus-ohio/#dinner-menu) and [food](https://forbiddenroot.com/wp-content/uploads/Cbus-Food.pdf). We should be there by 5 if you can't make the hike and just want to join us for drinks. The brewery's actual address is [4080 Worth Ave, Columbus, OH 43219](https://www.google.com/maps/place/4080+Worth+Ave,+Columbus,+OH+43219/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x88388a86d10b6619:0x4d42b470a5cf11d3?sa=X&ved=1t:242&ictx=111); however, I recommend pointing your GPS to the [Worth Garage](https://www.google.com/maps/place/Worth+Garage/@40.0542293,-82.9137962,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x88388b4df6082825:0x17582f0eccd9dda1!8m2!3d40.0542293!4d-82.9137962!16s%2Fg%2F11rzfvvv8b?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI2MDQxNS4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D) across the street. Parking in this garage is free as long as you're not on the first floor, and it is literally right next to the brewery.
