Talk: "A Fresh Look at the History of the Industrial Revolution" (Leatherhead)
There is much more to the origin of the Industrial Revolution than harnessing steam, and the invention of the spinning jenny in 1764. This panoramic story is much older and more intriguing. And why didn't it happen in France or Holland? Was invention driven by science or the other way around? The cast of characters in this talk includes William the Conqueror, Henry VIII, Louis XIV, James Watt and a quack doctor.
Please come along - should be an entertaining and illuminating talk. Free tea, coffee and biscuits at half-time
FREE entry for members of SIHG and Oddfellows! Others £3
Oddfellows Hall is 10 minutes walk from Leatherhead railway station. Nearest parking is 52 Bridge St car park, over the road from Oddfellows; Church Street Short Stay Car Park KT22 8DW is 5 minutes walk, the Swan Centre Car Park KT22 8AH is and a little further away.
D is for... Dr Johnson's House LATE: 'Johnson Crime & Punishment' talk
**Join us at Dr Johnson's House for an evening talk: 'Johnson, Crime and Punishment, in Four Cases'. Tickets include a welcome drink and chance to view Dr Johnson's House.**
Join us for a fascinating exploration of Samuel Johnson's entanglements with ideas of criminality and causality. Four experts offer their insights into ways in which Johnson wrestled with wrongdoing, his own, as well as those of other people, and tried to stake out the terms of a shift in the way society addressed and corrected them.
Crime was rife in Georgian London, but so too was punishment. In the eighteenth century, you could be hanged for more than 350 offences, including wounding a hawk, fraternizing with gypsies, and defacing some, (but not all) of London's bridges. People were sent to prison for being in debt as was the case with the poet Richard Savage; and street walkers were sent to Bridewells for 'correction', while those who paid them for their services went scot free.
Samuel Johnson had a boundless compassion for people in desperate situations, and at the same time, an unwavering sense of Justice. All his life, he vied with the difficulty of reconciling these two pillars of his character, and of good society itself. How successful he was, and how far he influenced the shape of the century that followed, will comprise some of the questions that these series of short talks will raise.

CLH Book Group 📚Doughnut Economics by the Kate Raworth
March's Book: Doughnut Economics: Seven ways to think like a 21st-century economist by Kate Raworth.
Economics is broken. It has failed to predict, let alone prevent, financial crises that have shaken the foundations of our societies. Its outdated theories have permitted a world in which extreme poverty persists while the wealth of the super-rich grows year on year. And its blind spots have led to policies that are degrading the living world on a scale that threatens all of our futures.
Can it be fixed? In Doughnut Economics, Oxford academic Kate Raworth identifies seven critical ways in which mainstream economics has led us astray, and sets out a roadmap for bringing humanity into a sweet spot that meets the needs of all within the means of the planet. En route, she deconstructs the character of ‘rational economic man’ and explains what really makes us tick. She reveals how an obsession with equilibrium has left economists helpless when facing the boom and bust of the real-world economy. She highlights the dangers of ignoring the role of energy and nature’s resources – and the far-reaching implications for economic growth when we take them into account. And in the process, she creates a new, cutting-edge economic model that is fit for the 21st century – one in which a doughnut-shaped compass points the way to human progress.
Ambitious, radical and rigorously argued, Doughnut Economics promises to reframe and redraw the future of economics for a new generation.
The meeting starts at 7:30. Shortly after 7.30, we will break up into small groups. Those familiar with the CLH Book Group meeting know how this works: in each group we take turns introducing ourselves and giving our 1 minute thoughts on the book. It's important not to go over a minute and not to interrupt other people's minute so that everyone gets a chance to participate. After this first round, each group discusses for another 20 minutes or so.
We then shuffle the groups so as to talk to as many different people as possible and in the new groups repeat our introductions and 1 minute thoughts. We'll do this a couple of times before coming all together at the end in one last big group.
While we are very social and welcoming, the book group's primary focus is on discussing books. Feel free to turn up if you haven't managed to finish this month's book but note that the group works best when we have all read at least half of the book and are prepared to share our opinions.

'Historic Clerkenwell Treasure Hunt' - can you find the treasure?
Come along on Saturday 28th March for treasure hunt around the historic area of Clerkenwell!
The treasure hunts are a good way to get to know a museum, gallery or area of London whilst meeting new people.
**About the area**
Clerkenwell took its name from the Clerks' Well in Farringdon Lane. Which came from 'Clerken' which is an old English word meaning literate person or clergyman.
The Monastic Order of the Knights Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem had its English headquarters at the Priory of Clerkenwell. The order was founded to provide medical assistance during the crusades and St. John's Gate (built in 1504) survives in the rebuilt form of the Priory Gate.
In the 17th century before Clerkenwell became a built-up area, it had a reputation as a resort a short walk out of the city, where Londoners could disport themselves at its spas, springs, tea gardens and theatres.
In the 20th century, the area was associated with radicalism and in 1902, Vladimir Lenin moved the publication of the Iskra to 37a Clerkenwell Green, and issues 22 to 38 were edited there. It is said that Lenin and a young Joseph Stalin met in the Crown and Anchor pub (now known as The Crown Tavern) on the Green when the latter was visiting London in 1903.
**How it works**
Come along at 1:30pm and you will be randomly divided into teams of 3 people (or you can choose your own team beforehand). For fairness, any London Guides or Blue Badge Tour Guides won't be allowed to take part.
Then each team will be given 15-20 written clues which you have to find the answers for. It's up to your team to work together to find the answers. The answers will be found on blue plaques or statues. You can answer them in any order and you will be provided with a map of the area to help you. It's not a race, so you can take your time getting to know Clerkenwell.
The treasure hunts are a good way to get to know the an area of London whilst meeting and getting to know new people!
**Prizes**
The team to get the most correct answers and then return to base (a local pub or cafe) will win book vouchers for Waterstones bookshops of £10 per person.
If more than one team gets the top score, there will be a tie break question back at the pub.
A £5 gift voucher per person will be given to each member of the team coming in second place and prizes will be given to each member of the team with the best team name.
**Cost**
Its £7 per person to take part (payable by cash or credit card on the day), apart from Full Members where it is free!

Come and join us on a trip to **Glastonbury**, possibly the quirkiest town in England, and home to the famous **Glastonbury Music Festival**! This city is at fascinating crossroads of various religions and spiritualities, from Christianity and paganism, to Druidism and witchcraft, and is unusually rich in legends and mythology. **Glastonbury Tor**, which we're going to climb, took centre stage in the opening ceremony of the **London 2012 Olympic Games**, celebrating the “idyllic, mythical England”.
Our **4-mile route** will follow the **Glastonbury Way** around the town and its beautiful landscape, taking in the most significant places. We’ll also visit the beautiful **White Spring** **temple** at the base of Glastonbury Tor (free entry). Candle-lit and atmospheric, it is a unique and sacred space long cherished by pilgrims and local people, and commonly used for quiet reflection, ceremonies and meditation. Opposite the White Spring are the peaceful, sunlit gardens of **Chalice Well** and the **Red Spring**, which you’re also welcome to visit for a small entry fee.
After the hike, you’ll have free time to explore **Glastonbury’s weird and wonderful shops**. This is the perfect place to browse for crystals (and learn about their healing properties), tarot cards, jewellery, lotions and potions, incense, herbs – and even wizard hats and magic wands! 🌟🔮🃏The town is also home to more than **50 spectacular pieces of street art**, with colourful murals decorating the city centre and adding to Glastonbury’s vibrant, creative atmosphere.
**This trip is suitable for BEGINNERS** – a great way to experience hiking before joining our more difficult trips! 🤩
**LEGENDS OF GLASTONBURY**
There are many legends surrounding Glastonbury. Below are the most famous ones.
*Jesus and Joseph of Arimathea*
Jesus is said to have come to Glastonbury as a boy, travelling here with his uncle, Joseph of Arimathea. Joseph was a tin merchant and had travelled to England's south west for this valuable metal. After the crucifixion of Jesus, Joseph travelled to Britain with the Holy Grail (the cup used by Jesus at the Last Supper), which he buried under Glastonbury Tor.
*The Holy Thorn*
Joseph is said to have arrived in Glastonbury by boat over the flooded Somerset Levels. On arriving, he climbed up Wearyall Hill (a 15-minute walk from Glastonbury centre). Exhausted, he thrust his staff into the ground and rested. By morning his staff had taken root and grown into a miraculous thorn tree, known as the Holy Thorn. A flowering sprig of the Holy Thorn is cut every year and presented to the monarch, where it resides on his Christmas Day breakfast table.
*The Isle of Avalon and King Arthur*
For many people, Glastonbury represents the Isle of Avalon, the mythical island of Celtic tradition, believed to be a gateway to the underworld. Glastonbury is said to be the final resting place of the legendary King Arthur.

Speak Easy (Storytelling)
The topic for April is "Water"
Speak Easy: true stories, told live.
The idea is simple: an audience, an open microphone, and great stories. Hilarious, gripping, poignant- it's up to you. Audiences are invited to come to listen or come to tell as folks from all corners of Columbus offer their stories live on stage! Held at Wild Goose Creative's warm, intimate space, this night of tales occurs on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Doors open at 6:30 pm, show starts at 7:00 pm. Please arrive early if you want to tell, as we generally only have room for a limited number of tellers, and the sign-up sheet has a tendency to fill up fast.
Formed around the idea that people need stories--they're what hold and draw us together--SpeakEasy celebrates the strangeness and commonness of being human. And in a world of smartphones, Facebook, Twitter, and more . . . it gives people a real, breathing, in-person way to connect.
The night is geared for true stories of all kinds, taking the best tales told around kitchen tables, in darkened pubs, on the street corner, and at late-night parties and giving them an audience. Speak Easy is also a great outlet for performers, writers, and artists looking to share their favorite stories and perfect their skills. We strongly encourage tellers to please tell the story rather than read it so we keep within the spirit of good storytelling and stay engaged with the audience. All are welcome. Hang around after the show for a drink and build community!
Humanist Program
The Humanist Monthly Program is our longest running event and still a community favorite. In the old days it used to be called "Going to HCCO" and we still like to think of it as our flagship event.
We will be hearing from Becca Powell, Director of Advocacy and Outreach at Unchained At Last, an organization whose mission is dedication to ending forced and child marriage in the United States through direct services and systems change. Unchained At Last's mission clearly meshes and addresses several of our Humanist Ten Commitments. Becca will educate us about an issue many of us may not be familiar with--but should be.
Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk.
Going forward our meetings will be hybrid. You can meet us in-person or attend online
