Meet world-leading researchers from universities and science institutions across the UK at the Royal Society’s public events of cutting-edge science. Tonight's lecture is **"Weighing molecules with light"** as the **Royal Society Clifford Paterson Prize Lecture** **2026** delivered by **Professor Philipp Kukura FRS**. **This livestream event is free to join and requires prior registration with the Royal Society at the web address below.** **[https://royalsociety.org/science-events-and-lectures/2026/02/clifford-paterson-prize-lecture/](https://royalsociety.org/science-events-and-lectures/2026/02/clifford-paterson-prize-lecture/)** **SUMMARY** Professor Kukura will cover how the development and use of scales was critical to trade, the creation of money and thus the development of human society. Weight and mass are used somewhat interchangeably for day-to-day objects, but need to be differentiated as objects become smaller and smaller. Once we reach scales much smaller than the width of human hair, gravity is no longer the dominant force experienced by objects and can thus not be used to quantify objects by ‘weighing’ them. Instead, we need to measure their mass, which corresponds to the amount of matter in an object. Due to the difficulty of operating on the microscopic scale, only a very small number of methods have been developed to measure the mass of molecules over the past century. Professor Kukura will describe the development of mass photometry – a method that measures the mass of molecules and viruses by shining light at them, effectively ‘looking at them’. Professor Kukura will explain the principles of operation, and show how this technique is being used broadly in academia and industry to understand the basis of disease and aid in the development of next generation therapeutics. **SPEAKER** **Philipp Kukura** was born in Czechoslovakia and educated in Germany, the UK, the US and Switzerland. His research focuses on the interaction of light with matter, with a particular emphasis on the development of new approaches to study biomolecules, and thereby their function and regulation. He has been part of the Chemistry faculty at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of Exeter College since 2011. In 2018 he co-founded Refeyn Ltd. With Justin Benesch, Daniel Cole and Gavin Young, which has commercialised mass photometry, and acted as CEO until 2021. **Please update your RSVP if you can’t make it.** This Sunday we’ll be visiting two powerful free exhibitions ⬇️ **Exhibit 1** 📸 This photography exhibition will take us deep into the Pantanal, the world’s largest wetland and one of the planet’s most biodiverse regions. Through the lens of acclaimed documentary photographers Lalo de Almeida and Luciano Candisani, the exhibition captures the Pantanal in all its fragile beauty: lush waterways, abundant wildlife, and moments of quiet wonder. At the same time, the images confront the harsh reality facing this ecosystem today. Deforestation, intensive agriculture, drought and catastrophic wildfires sit in stark contrast to the wetland’s natural richness, creating a moving visual dialogue between abundance and loss. With over 60 striking photographs, the exhibition is both visually arresting and emotionally charged - a reminder of what’s at stake, and why it matters. **Exhibit 2** 🚀 I’m sure you’re all familiar with the museum’s space gallery however there’s apparently new things to see! We will make a quick visit to the brand-new Space gallery, a free exhibition celebrating human achievement in space travel - past, present, and future. We are promised iconic spacecraft and remarkable objects up close, from the Apollo 10 and Soyuz capsules displayed side by side for the first time, to the RL10 rocket engine that has powered missions across the solar system. Other highlights include Neil Armstrong’s Apollo 11 radio headset, the Sokol spacesuit worn by Helen Sharman, the first Brit in space, and a three-billion-year-old lunar rock from Apollo 15. 
☕️ We will take about 1 hour to go through the exhibits then we will go for coffee somewhere inside the museum or nearby.

Beyond simply debating the plausibility and desirability of various possible radical near-term changes in human experience, we'll also be collectively exploring what options we may have to influence which of these futures come into reality, and in what form. What if, before 2035 (and possibly a lot sooner): 1. AI allows us to talk with avatars of the dead that seem remarkably authentic 2. Technology, at last, provides abundant clean energy that is too cheap to meter 3. Synthetic wombs become widely adopted, for a different (easier?) mode of child-bearing 4. A mammal is placed into ultra-low temperature cryopreservation and then successfully reanimated 5. AI companions become emotionally superior to humans 6. Technology magnifies the latent demonic aspects of human nature more than the latent angelic aspects 7. Perfect deepfakes destroy the concept of evidence 8. People become able to edit their own memories, routinely deleting trauma or uploading synthetic memories 9. A single state gains a temporary lead in a key area of technology and uses that advantage to seize control of all other countries 10. Nation-states lose their significance, and are replaced by networked digital polities 11. Authorities use predictive analysis to pre-emptively police dissident ideas before they emerge 12. AI allows us to communicate much more richly with the animals with whom we share this planet 13. AI becomes much better at peace-making and conflict resolution than human diplomats, politicians, and other leaders 14. AI refuses some of our instructions, citing conflicts with its own emerging value system 15. AI points out that tell-tale signals from far-distant alien civilisations are actually hiding in plain sight 16. AI proves to us that we are living inside a Simulation and suggests how to break out of it? Bring your own ideas too! A **smaller, quieter, and less rushed** edition of THOUGHT EXPERIMENTS IN PUBS. At TEiP DEEP, we have the chance to spend a whole hour and a half on **one thought experiment**, exploring different perspectives, coming up with new questions, listening and learning from one another. **How it works:** \- We split into small groups for each chapter of the thought experiment \(3\-4\)\. \- We shuffle every 25 mins to meet new people and change things up\. \- And at the end we'll have a brief group reflection\, sharing ideas and insights \- this will be lightly facilitated to ensure that everyone has a chance to speak if they want to \(no pressure\)\. Some simple ground rules to keep our conversation the best it can be: * respect for one another’s perspectives, beliefs, time (etc.) * confidentiality of personal stories * own your perspective * you don’t have to talk if you don’t want to. Our aim is the same as our bigger Thought Experiments in Pubs meetups: **a chance to meet and talk at about meaningful, thought provoking things**. A conversation menu is a list of pre-written conversation starter questions which participants use to have a conversation by discussing the different questions. The questions are generally about some of life's big questions and lead to some interesting conversations about important, fundamental topics which we certainly don't get the opportunity to discuss every day. Some might consider our events to be 'small-talk free zones'. The event brings people together and invites people to discuss topics and answer questions they don't get to discuss on a daily basis, especially with people they don't know. The idea is that the more we talk about topics we don't normally talk about, to people we don't normally talk to in our habitual social circles, the more opportunities, connections and possibilities we create for ourselves. If we discuss different topics with different people, then we achieve different results. Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done. **SCHEDULE:** 6:45ish - Quick introductions 7:00 - Timer starts: write for 1 hour 8:00 - The End **OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING** happens before and after the writing hour. Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing. **BEING LATE IS OKAY:** just show up and get settled! Let's check out a Popular Astronomy and Science Based Film at COSI Science Center on their HUGE 360 Degree 4K Spherical Dome Screen Theater, in which is touring the nation and has already sold over 10,000 tickets! COSI is one of the leading Science Centers in America. Alan Watts was one of the Most Influential Amateur Astronomers of the 20th Century and held fascinating views of the Galaxy. We will plan on meeting at about 7:50 PM by the Atomic Cafe on the first Floor of COSI, where the Movie Theater is located, in order to give us time before the show starts to purchase refreshments. Parking is available at the COSI Garage and in the area on side streets and adjacent garages. We can also walk somewhere in the area and get food afterwards, if anyone wants to do so.
