SOLD OUT • ST PANCRAS • SEASON 2 EPISODE 1: AGE | Thought Experiments in Pubs
SEASON 2 at ST PANCRAS will begin with a theme I can't believe we haven't discussed already: "AGE"
Join us for thought provoking conversations at the beautiful Betjeman Arms!
Spaces are limited, so get your ticket early if you want to be there! 😊
**THOUGHT EXPERIMENTS** \- posted in the comments below on the day of the event
**[WHATSAPP GROUP](https://chat.whatsapp.com/DapwAXpnOHO5DRYThobpe4)** \- stay in the loop
**[INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/thoughtexperimentsinpubs/)** \- see what we look like \(including The People of TEiP project\)
**[SUBSTACK](https://experimentsingroupwisdom.substack.com/)** \- sign up for the newsletter
**The idea:** A chance to meet and talk at a 'deeper' level than 'small talk'.
**How we'll do it** (timings approximate):
* 7:00pm - Arrive at The Betjeman Arms. You can access the pub either from the street (entrance to the right of The St Pancras Hotel entrance) or via St Pancras Station (entrance from the upstairs train platforms). We'll be in the private dining room - ask at the bar if you can't find us.
* Organise ourselves into small groups (3-6ish - apparently 4 is the best number for a good conversation!)
* Have a look at the **thought experiments** (announced on the day of the event)
* 7:15 - First rotation begins - Talk about the first thought experiment, but feel free to veer off topic.
* 7:35 - Optional reshuffle: swap groups, move on to the second thought experiment.
* 8:00 - Optional reshuffle: swap groups, move on to the third thought experiment.
* 8:25pm - Wrap up - hear about upcoming events, feedback/requests for future meetups.
* 8:30 Meetup ‘ends’. But feel free to carry on conversations. We have the room until 10pm and usually a lot of us stay until then :-)
**Notes on the general atmosphere**:
* The vibe is to let conversation flow rather than stick strictly to one topic.
* While we'd like to talk about 'meaningful things', we also see the value in lighter topics, so don't worry about not being 'deep' enough!
* Feel free to suggest ideas for future Thought Experiments in Pubs meetup groups, both in terms of structure and topics to discuss.
**Where we'll meet**:
This group will be at The Betjeman Arms. The nearest Tube station is King's Cross St. Pancras. You can access the pub either from the street (entrance to the right of The St Pancras Hotel entrance) or via St Pancras Station (entrance from the upstairs train platforms). We'll be in the private dining room - ask at the bar if you can't find us.
**Who should come**:
Everyone! We believe that the more perspectives, the richer the conversation. This group is not about being experts in Philosophy, it is about *doing* philosophy. That is, bringing our various life experiences and lenses on the world to group discussions about the human experience, the nature of reality... etc....
I'm so looking forward to meeting & talking with you in this beautiful new location :-)

This is an in-person full day event. It is a beginner level course to get people started in using AI assistants like Copilot and ChatGPT effectively and understand how when and where they can be useful. We will work on hands-on guided exercises.
In the morning, we’ll learn how to use our AI tools to:
* generate new ideas and think creatively.
* explain how things work: for example, identify root causes of problems and suggest solutions.

In the afternoon, we’ll explore the AI assistant’s full capabilities to:
* use advanced reasoning to solve really hard problems.
* work with images: describe them, and interpret visuals such as maps or charts.
* use notebook features to answer questions based on document contents and create podcasts, mind maps, or study guides.
* build and use custom AI tools that specialise in specific tasks.

Royal Society - Leeuwenhoek Lecture: Pathogen assassin: journey in microbiology
Meet world-leading researchers from universities and science institutions across the UK at the Royal Society’s public events of cutting-edge science. Tonight's lecture is **"Pathogen assassin: a journey in microbiology"** as the **Royal Society Leeuwenhoek Prize Lecture 2026** delivered by **Sir Michael Ferguson CBE FMedSci FRS**.
**This livestream event is free to join and requires prior registration with the Royal Society at the web address below.**
**[https://royalsociety.org/science-events-and-lectures/2026/01/leeuwenhoek-prize-lecture/](https://royalsociety.org/science-events-and-lectures/2026/01/leeuwenhoek-prize-lecture/)**
**SUMMARY**
Pathogen assassin: a journey in microbiology. In scientific research, unexpected discoveries and connections are made along the way. Some examples of how microbiology informs human biology, and vice-versa, will be highlighted to illustrate this. The talk will explore how science can provide opportunities to make better, safer medicines and diagnostics for neglected infectious diseases. This will include a description of the complex journey by which new candidate medicines are discovered, optimised and tested, and the international collaborative networks required to span from the laboratory to the patient. Lastly, aspects of the social contract between science and scientists and their public and private stakeholders will be touched upon.
**SPEAKER**
**Sir Mike Ferguson** is Regius Professor of Life Sciences. He studied in Manchester, London, New York and Oxford before moving to the University of Dundee in 1988. He studies the surface molecular architectures of protozoan parasites and how these influence survival and infectivity. During these studies, Mike and colleagues discovered a new way by which proteins can be attached to cell surfaces, a mechanism which turns out to be widely used in Nature. Wishing to translate discoveries into new medicines, Mike and colleagues established a Drug Discovery Unit in 2006 which has delivered candidate drugs for a variety of infectious diseases. In addition, Mike’s team helped develop a simple diagnostic for human African sleeping-sickness. He also works to provide infrastructure needed to grow Life Sciences companies in an economically challenged part of the UK.

THE HEARTH (Q1): wisdom exchange for hosts, facilitators, and community builders
The beginning of a new year of gathering. Lets get together, inspire each other, and make a strong start to 2026.
**THE HEARTH is a community for community builders** 😊
**We meet quarterly to check in, share our learning, and support each other's initiatives**.
**If you already host a community or group**:
* connect with fellow hosts
* reflect on your work
* celebrate successes
* workshop new ideas
* find opportunities for collaboration
* leave with renewed energy and fresh perspectives.
**If you haven't launched your community yet**:
* use us as a sounding board for your ideas
* benefit from the wisdom of experienced hosts
* get inspired by existing communities
* leave with the support of the group 🔥
**Why is it called 'THE HEARTH'?**
Hestia is the goddess of the hearth. She is also the goddess of community, hospitality towards strangers, home, and warmth. She is symbolised by the sacred fire burning in every home and city. Known for her inner strength, calm demeanour, and commitment to peace, I think Hestia embodies qualities that can be very helpful when hosting! 🔥
**HOW IT WORKS (...at the moment - we're continuously evolving according to feedback) :**
We will start by discussing a thought experiment related to hosting/community building
* this is a tried and tested method of getting into good conversations quickly, see my other community "[THOUGHT EXPERIMENTS IN PUBS](https://www.meetup.com/thought-experiments-in-pubs/)" for evidence!
* we will split into small groups for about 25 minutes to discuss
We will then open up discussion to the room (15 people max).
There will be an opportunity to choose focus topics for the evening:
* **E.G. philosophical(ish) issues: purpose, leadership, ethos, what we mean by community**
* **E.G. practical issues: structuring an event, marketing, communication between events**
We can either continue in the big group or split into smaller groups again, depending on preferences for topics.
There will also be opportunities for storytelling, trouble shooting, and celebrating existing communities.
The rest of the evening is unstructured space to continue conversations, discuss collaborations, get to know each other.
**NOTES ON THE GENERAL ATMOSPHERE:**
* Laid back, light, fun
* Respectful of each other's time, views, ideas
* Generous listening and low pressure sharing
**WHO SHOULD COME:**
Everyone with an interest in hosting groups and building community. This group is not about being experts, it is about *working it out together*. That is, bringing our various experiences and lenses on the world together to support, inspire, and uplift one another. The more perspectives, the richer the conversation.
**WHERE WE'LL MEET:**
The Fitzroy Tavern in Fitzrovia. In the small dining room UPSTAIRS. The nearest Tube stations are Goodge Street and Tottenham Court Road. (It has a nice fire place!)
**YOUR HOST:**
I'm Bonny. I've created a couple of successful communities (e.g. [THOUGHT EXPERIMENTS IN PUBS](https://www.meetup.com/thought-experiments-in-pubs) & [THE SUNRISE CLUB](https://www.meetup.com/the-sunrise-club/)) and have a lot of experience hosting groups. SOLD OUT • TEiP DEEP A small group, deep dive into a single Thought Experiment
A **smaller, quieter, and less rushed** edition of THOUGHT EXPERIMENTS IN PUBS.
At TEiP DEEP, we have the chance to spend a whole hour and a half on **one thought experiment**, exploring different perspectives, coming up with new questions, listening and learning from one another.
**How it works:**
\- We split into small groups for each chapter of the thought experiment \(3\-4\)\.
\- We shuffle every 25 mins to meet new people and change things up\.
\- And at the end we'll have a brief group reflection\, sharing ideas and insights \- this will be lightly facilitated to ensure that everyone has a chance to speak if they want to \(no pressure\)\.
Some simple ground rules to keep our conversation the best it can be:
* respect for one another’s perspectives, beliefs, time (etc.)
* confidentiality of personal stories
* own your perspective
* you don’t have to talk if you don’t want to.
Our aim is the same as our bigger Thought Experiments in Pubs meetups: **a chance to meet and talk at about meaningful, thought provoking things**.
Although we’ll be going a bit ‘deeper’, we’ll keep the intention to have an enjoyable evening, with good humour and fun.
Places are limited to 15-20 people and tickets are £5.
Please update your RSVP if you can no longer attend so that someone else can have your place.
**Who should come:**
Everyone! We believe that the more perspectives, the richer the conversation. This group is not about being experts in Philosophy, it is about *doing* philosophy. That is, bringing our various life experiences and lenses on the world to group discussions about the human experience, the nature of reality...etc. etc....
**Where we'll meet:**
The Fitzroy Tavern in Fitzrovia. The nearest Tube stations are Goodge Street and Tottenham Court Road.

Let's Discuss... Solitude
Solitude offers one of life's most valuable experiences: the chance to find yourself and figure out where you're headed. But solitude can become addictive. And when it reveals things about ourselves we didn't want to see, we might reject what we've learned.
Have would you describe solitude and its effects?
Does solitude show us the truth, or does it sometimes create illusions?
What's the difference between productive solitude and just hiding from the world?
If solitude helps you find yourself, but can also trap you, how do you know when to seek it and when to leave it?

Meetup #12 - The Octopus Organisation
Shaping our future with AI. Creating opportunity through AI fluency, connection and community.
No jargon. No hype. No confusing terminology.
**Join us for our next in-person meetup in London on Thursday January 29th.**
This month we're meeting the authors of the latest book published by Harvard Business Review: The Octopus Organisation - A Guide To Thriving In A World Of Continuous Transformation. We'll have signed copies of the book available as prizes on the night!
Sticking with the theme of transformation we're also excited to be hosting Masha Gaganova, a transformation leader with refreshingly grounded and practical advice about leading people through change!
**Where and When?**
* Thursday, January 29th
* Doors open at 18:00
* Talks start at 19:00
* Tessl HQ, 210 Pentonville Rd, London N1 9JY, UK
**The Octopus Organisation: Meet the authors**
In this fireside conversation we discover what an octopus organisation is and learn how to thrive in a world of continuous transformation. With AI driving transformation across businesses and teams of all sizes and industries, what can we learn from these experts in transformation at scale?
Drawing on their experience at companies such as Amazon and McDonald's and work with hundreds of global companies, authors Phil Le-Brun and Jana Werner show you how to break away from the broken model of transformation and embrace continuous change.
**Phil Le-Brun:**
Phil leads the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Executives in Residence team, comprising former CXOs who provide board and C-suite advisory. Prior to AWS, Phil held senior roles in McDonald’s Corporation including VP for Global Technology Development and International Chief Information Officer and has been recognised as one of the top 100 UK-based CIOs.
**Jana Werner:**
Jana Werner is an Executive in Residence at Amazon Web Services, where she guides the executive teams of Fortune 500 companies in building adaptive customer-centric organizations. Her academic background in uncertainty dynamics grounds her practical advice for leaders navigating complex environments and building resilient organizations.
**Talk: Wondering how to make a transformation work? Have lots of cups of tea** (Masha Gaganova, Transformation Consultant)
In real organisations, change doesn’t stick through frameworks, roadmaps, or shiny tools. It sticks when someone takes the time to build trust one-to-one, name what’s happening, and hold the boundary when discomfort shows up.
In this talk, Masha shares patterns from leading transformation in complex, high-stakes environments from digital and AI adoption to new ways of working. Why sustainable change creates temporary discomfort. Why softening the message kills momentum. Why people don’t resist change, they resist being left out of it.
**Masha Gagonova:**
Masha Gaganova is an international transformation leader, Fractional Change Partner, and speaker with 15+ years driving strategy and change across pharma, medtech, healthtech, and the public sector. Her work always starts with the end user, often a patient, and connects strategy, technology, and human behaviour to deliver measurable impact.

Shut Up & Write!® East Side Columbus
Join us for an hour of writing! We’ve discovered that it’s strikingly helpful to write with other writers. See if it’s true for you at 7:00pm on Wednesday, February 11 at Streetlight Guild.
Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done.
**SCHEDULE:**
6:45ish - Quick introductions
7:00 - Timer starts: write for 1 hour
8:00 - The End
**OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING** happens before and after the writing hour. Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing.
**BEING LATE IS OKAY:** just show up and get settled! If you were on time, please be willing to make room for the friendly latecomer.
Happy writing & I look forward to seeing you at Streetlight Guild!
**WHAT SHOULD I BRING?**
Whatever you need to be able to write! You're welcome to bring earplugs/headphones if noise will bother you!
**OTHER IMPORTANT DETAILS:**
* **RSVP:** Please RSVP by 6:00pm the evening of the meeting. This helps me know how many to expect, and if we'll need additional space!
* **COVID:** While masks are not required, please be mindful of the other writers around you and their comfort levels.
* **WIFI/OUTLETS:** Outlets are limited, so please ensure your devices are charged when you come! But Streetlight Guild does have free WiFi! Yay!
* **PARKING:** There is free public parking at Streetlight Guild.

Azure CBUS February: Build Your Own MCP Server
### Tools in your AI's Toolbox : An introduction to MCP Servers
The generative AI revolution has unlocked unprecedented capabilities, but the next frontier is agency: empowering models to interact with, query, and act upon the world. The current challenge is the “N x M integration problem,” where every AI model requires a custom, brittle integration for each external tool or data source. This approach simply doesn’t scale. How can we give an AI access to our sales leads, code repositories, or IoT devices in a standardized, secure, and reusable way?
This session introduces Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP), the open-source framework designed to solve this challenge and become the universal connector—the USB-C port—for AI. MCP standardizes how AI models discover and use external tools, moving beyond simple function-calling to a robust, client-server architecture. We will dive into how this open protocol is creating a new ecosystem for building powerful, context-aware AI agents.
Join this session for a developer-focused introduction where you will learn how to:
Understand the core concepts of the open-source Model Context Protocol and its architecture.
Utilize pre-built, open-source MCP servers to instantly connect AI to tools like Git, Slack, and databases.
Build a custom MCP server to securely expose your own proprietary data and APIs as tools for any compliant AI.
Move beyond bespoke integrations and contribute to a standardized, collaborative, and open ecosystem.
Stop building one-off connectors and start building intelligent agents. This session will give you the practical knowledge to leverage MCP and create the next generation of AI that doesn’t just talk, but does.
Want to be a speaker? submit your talk to our Call for Presenters!!!
