Each month Noah Gitlis teaches a different Jazz Standard with emphasis on melody, harmony, accompaniment, and rhythm. The goal of the class is to help students boost their jazz repertoire, and build the skills required to feel confident in a jazz jam session. These classes are a lot of fun and a great way to get out and play with other people while learning some really fun music. All instruments and skill levels are welcome but students should have basic proficiency on their instrument to get the most out of the class. The arrival of spring is reason for song! See you at SOJO! Seasoned SOJO'ers already know the program, but below are all the details which may be helpful to our new members. MOST IMPORTANT POINTS: 1. If you have copies of Rise Up Singing and Rise Again, please bring them. If you don't, we may have some extras available for you to borrow (one time only, please). Both books are easy to find and order online. And here's a link to find YouTube Videos of any song in either book. https://www.riseupandsing.org/songs/search 2. Feel free to bring lyrics and chords to hand out for songs not in the books. If you'd like to bring a song that most people don't know well, see if you can find a YouTube link and post it in the comments when you RSVP. We'd like to listen a few times before the SOJO to get the hang of it. 3. Bring something to drink, as singing is likely to make you thirsty. 4. We appreciate (but do not require) contributions to cover our room rental costs of $75 per session. 5. Please do RSVP. It helps us know how to set up the room and allows us to contact you if we have to cancel. *** FURTHER DETAILS, if you like: * Our regular gatherings take place on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month. We meet from 2 to 5 p.m. with a break around 3:30. You can come for the whole time or just part of it. If you can arrive a little early to help set up or stay a little late to help put things back in order, that would be great. Occasionally we take pictures of our events. If you would rather not be photographed, just politely let the person with the camera know and step out of view. We'll be respectful of your wishes. Whether you're new to SOJO or not so new, we look forward to singing and playing with you!

Judy Cook has been captivating audiences for well over 30 years by making the great ballads come alive, and by providing opportunities for rousing choruses. She knows a great many songs and continues to find new ones. On March 21st at 3:00pm, Judy will be returning to FSGW for a house concert featuring some of her favorite songs at Kathie Mack’s home in Takoma Park. Expect songs of love, supernatural beings, animals real and imaginary, strong women, songs of hope and encouragement, and songs about singing. Dennis will be adding his harmonies to a number of Judy’s songs. After the concert there will be a short break followed by a time to share songs in an open sing. Suggested minimum donation: $15. A conceived boy band for TV, that was made up of four talented musicians- Davey Jones, Mike Nesmith, Mickey Dolenz, and Peter Tork. Their three #1 hits included Last Train to Clarksville, Daydream Believer, and Neil Diamond’s I’m a Believer. The Jelly Roll Mortals are fresh off their triumphant performance at the Buddy Holly Winter Dance and turn their talents on late 60’s power pop. Very few first aid programs actually address the issues of providing emergency care in a setting where 911 is overwhelmed or not immediately reachable. In this course, classroom instruction and Q&A are interwoven with practical work and problem-solving exercises. Lively dancable and so much fun! Get up and dance with Rebeca Barboza at Roda Movements March 22nd. Rebeca will sing while percussionist Henry Widener plays terrific Brazilian ♥️ rhythms to make you sway, samba, and forro. This event is great for all ages and a terrific way to meet, mingle, and have with other folks. Plus A portion of the proceeds go to support the Afro-Bahia Fest 2026 plus local musicians. This is a great class for beginner to intermediate players looking to get into bluegrass. Students will learn the basic chords and melody of one or 2 classic Bluegrass songs and how to approach playing them in a jam setting. Over the course of about an hour the class will play the tunes several times as a group exploring different possibilities for kickoffs, solos, endings and more. At the end of the class we open up the jam! Justin plays guitar and banjo with Cherry Blossom Special and runs jam sessions along and runs jam sessions along with mandolinist Nick Cameron and fiddler Mari Carlson. He has been teaching guitar, banjo and mandolin in Takoma Park since 2012. This class was designed to give people an affordable entry point to Bluegrass music, and help grow the community. Picture the Grand Ball scenes like you’ve seen in period films such as “Pride and Prejudice”, where the dancers are lined up in long lines, across from each other. That’s English Country Dancing, the predecessor of contra dancing. Now, add moves like “swing your partner” and “do-si-do,” like you’ve seen in square dancing. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alá “Riverdance.” Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude.
