• See **Britain’s tiniest listed building** — the famous Otford duck house
• Visit the remains of **Otford Palace**, once grander than Hampton Court
• Hike along the **North Downs Way** and the ancient **Pilgrims Way**

• Enjoy lunch at a 500-year-old traditional pub “time forgot”
• Conclude at a **family-owned vineyard** with optional wine flight & stone-baked pizza
🥾 **Hike Description**
Our hike begins in the tranquil **Darent Valley**, following the Darent Valley Path into the historic village of **Otford**. Here we encounter remarkable landmarks including the quirky duck house — Britain’s smallest Grade II listed building — and the evocative ruins of **Otford Palace**, once a Tudor residence larger than Hampton Court and known as “the lost palace of Henry VIII.”
From Otford we join the historic **North Downs Way**, tracing part of the medieval **Pilgrims Way** that itself followed an even older Stone Age track. The path leads to **Otford Mount**, where a Bronze Age barrow crowns the ridge and panoramic views stretch across the valley. Continuing onwards, we cross the nature-rich chalk grassland of **Kemsing Down** and pass by **Otford Manor**, high above the valley, before descending through woodland and fields.
Midway, we pause for lunch at a traditional **500-year-old pub**, hidden away in the countryside. Inside, little has changed since the 1960s, giving it a nostalgic charm that feels like stepping back in time. With its rustic character, it makes for a unique and memorable break on our journey.
Our adventure ends at a **family-owned vineyard**, where you can sample local Kentish wines with an optional extra - tasting flight and stone-baked pizza. Surrounded by vines and rolling hills, this picturesque stop — complete with a boutique shop selling locally produced gifts — is the perfect finale to a day exploring Kent’s landscapes, history and hidden gems.

Guided Forest Bathing @ THCP
**Introduction**
In our busy city, it can be difficult to find time to slow down and smell the roses! Forest bathing offers you the chance to do just that. Over the course of 2 hours, you will be guided through a multi-sensory exploration of the natural world, giving you time to slow down, breathe, and find peace among the natural world.
**What is forest bathing?**
Forest bathing typically consists of slow walking, mindfulness practices, and resting (seated or lying down) in nature. Remember being a kid and just watching the branches overhead in the breeze?
Originating in Japan in the 1980s, Shin-Rin Yoku or forest bathing, was created as a preventative response to climbing rates of stress in urban areas. Since then, many research studies have shown that even one hour a week spent engaging with nature can significantly reduce symptoms of stress.
**What to expect:**
* 2-hour duration
* Small group size (maximum 6)
* Multi-sensory activities
* Sharing circle (optional)
* Herbal tea offering
* A guide to take care of you, so you can truly relax into the wonder of the natural world
* Phone-free environment
* Opportunity to chat and connect with others (if you would like to)
* **Please note there are no toilets available** \- there are several cafes on Mile End Road with toilet facilities\.
**What to bring:**
* Warm clothes; even on a summer day, spending prolonged time in the shade can begin to feel chilly!
* Shoes with a good grip, and that you don't mind getting dirty
* A journal and pen
* A mug (for tea if you fancy it!)
* Any medications you might need, such as EpiPens or inhalers.
**How much is it?**
This experience is offered on a donation basis; this means you can decide what you can reasonably afford to give. To help you decide, we want to be transparent with our cost breakdown:
* £8.50 - meets the recommended donation to Friends of THCP and contributes to important conservation work
* £12 - covers the above and supports the guide at the minimum wage rate
* £15-20 - pay it forward / supporter option.
You are welcome to give less or more depending on your personal circumstances.
**About your guide:**
Hello! I'm Lizzie, a life-long nature lover. Having been gifted the Kingfisher Concise Field Guide to Animals & Plants of Britain and Europe at the tender age of five, it's perhaps unsurprising that I am happiest outdoors! After several years as a geography teacher and data analyst, I began my studentship as a Forest Bathing Practitioner with Nature and Therapy in June 2025. I have experienced the medicinal influence of nature in my own life when I've struggled with burnout and grief; it's a gift I am keen to share with others.
If you have any questions, please do reach out. I look forward to welcoming you!
**What next?**
Sign up! Then, you will receive a participation form by email with a couple of questions about health and safety; please try to respond before the event, so we can go straight to the trees! **🚀 WHAT HAPPENS AT OUR MEETUPS? 🚀**
Your friendly game leader will explain the rules and kick off the first game! Games last about 50 minutes, with about 10 minutes of social time in-between to laugh about who got marooned and who got rich! At the end of the meetup we get food and hang out until the owls are hooting
**⚡ HOW DOES THE GAME WORK? ⚡**
This game uses the free PlayCulture App ([playculture.com/app](https://www.playculture.com/app)). Players divide into teams and receive a treasure map! Follow the map and use the app to dig for treasure... Then the real fun begins! Your destiny is in your hands: embrace the life of a pirate and plunder as much booty as possible? Become a merchant and trade your way to victory? Or become a Kingsman with a royal decree to clean up the pirate menace? It really is up to you how you play, the more creative the better! Board your boat to leave the island before the game time runs out. At the end you will see a leaderboard showing everyone’s scores
**🎈 CAN I BRING MY FRIEND? 🎈**
Absolutely! If you want you can stick together and play as a ninja team! Just select extra tickets if you are bringing someone with you

1. **Let’s all commit to updating our RSVPs if plans change**—it helps us plan better and ensures great attendance for everyone. If you RSVP “yes” but don’t attend and don’t update your RSVP, you may be removed from the group to keep things fair. No stress, though—you can rejoin for a small £10 fee! Just send me a DM, and I’ll share the PayPal details to get you back in.
2. **Turn Up on Time at the start!** This helps the quality of the event and helps you.
3. If you are struggling with the **app**, use the web page instead, that's what I use.

8. To encourage signing up early to events and regulate the number of attendees a late joiner/overflow fee may be applied to an event for any **additional** people wanting to join the event. This may happen on the day or even an hour before the event. So there may be people who obtained a free RSVP to network with our group and some who had to pay. If you have successfully signed up to our event on meetup paid or not then you are in. Happy networking
