FREE SUNDAY HIKE - Viaduct, River, Castle & Lavender: A Darent Valley Loop
FREE SUNDAY HIKE - Viaduct, River, Castle & Lavender: A Darent Valley Loop
Looking for a Sunday that feels like a soft slice of summer? Join us for a beautiful 12–15 km loop through the Darent Valley, where riverside paths, rolling green fields, and blooming lavender come together in one of Kent's most charming landscapes. This valley has been shaped by centuries of life and travel, and you feel it as soon as you step onto the trail. We'll pass beneath the towering arches of the Eynsford Viaduct, a Victorian engineering landmark that has carried trains across the valley since the 1860s. Further along, the route brushes past the historic grounds of Lullingstone Castle, a Tudor manor once visited by Henry VIII and home to the Hart Dyke family for over 500 years. From there, the path opens into the quiet lanes of Shoreham village and the purple shimmer of the lavender fields drifting across the hillsides. As we move through meadows, woodlands, and open countryside, the day settles into that easy summer rhythm where everything feels unhurried and lightly golden. It's the kind of walk where the scenery does the talking: the river winding beside us, the scent of lavender in the warm air, and the countryside unfolding in soft greens and purples — a Sunday that feels sun-warmed, peaceful, and just a little bit dreamy. We will head to a pub near the station when we finish for a pint or/and lunch. ## 📅 **Event Details** **Meeting Point:** Eynsford Station (Start / Finish) **Meeting Time:** 10:15 AM for 10:30 AM sharp start. **Distance:** approx. 12 to 15 km **Elevation:** \~300 m approx **Difficulty:** Moderate **Pace:** Steady **Estimated Finish:** Around 2 PM ## 🌿 **Route Highlights** * **Eynsford Viaduct Viewpoint** — one of Kent’s most photogenic spots, especially in summer light. * **Ancient woodland paths** around Ashen Bank, offering shade and cool forest air. * **Shoreham Village** — postcard‑perfect with its stone bridge and riverside charm. * **Darent Valley Path** — peaceful riverside walking with open fields and gentle breezes. * **Shoreham Lavender Fields** — with sweeping purple rows and great photo opportunities. * **Lullingstone Country Park** and **Castle** — meadows, woodlands, and a relaxed finish back toward Eynsford. Jurassic Coast Hiking Weekend – Lyme Regis & Cerne Giant – 4 days / 3 nights
Jurassic Coast Hiking Weekend – Lyme Regis & Cerne Giant – 4 days / 3 nights
Join us for a spectacular long weekend exploring West Dorset and the Jurassic Coast, one of England’s most dramatic and rewarding walking landscapes. This four-day Adventure Women UK trip focuses on the western end of Dorset, taking in sweeping coastal paths, rolling chalk downland, ancient hill forts and classic villages — offering big views, fresh sea air and a real sense of journey across the landscape Over the weekend, we’ll walk a carefully balanced mix of routes, starting with the coastline around Abbotsbury and Chesil Beach, building to a longer and more demanding coastal day to Golden Cap, and finishing with gentler but still rewarding walks to round off the trip. The programme is designed to offer variety and challenge without rushing, with time to pause, take photos and enjoy being out on the trail. This itinerary is distinct from our previous East Dorset trips, showcasing the wilder landscapes and iconic highlights that make West Dorset such a special place to explore on foot. This is a women-only trip with a supportive, friendly atmosphere, ideal for women who enjoy good walking, shared adventure and exploring beautiful places together — whether you’re coming solo or with a friend. Our base for the weekend is The Cow Shed in Toller Porcorum, a comfortable group house set on the edge of the Kingcombe National Nature Reserve, owned and run by Dorset Wildlife Trust. Surrounded by countryside and wildlife-friendly gardens, it provides a peaceful retreat after full days on the hills, with all bedrooms en-suite and relaxed communal spaces to unwind. Evenings are flexible and sociable — we’ll either eat out together at local pubs and restaurants or you’re very welcome to use the self-catering facilities at the accommodation, depending on preference. This route links Hardy’s Monument with Maiden Castle, one of Europe’s largest Iron Age hill forts. Expect wide open views, steady climbs and a strong sense of history. A satisfying full day on the hills without technical terrain. Day 3 – Lyme Regis & Golden Cap \~14\.5 km \| 540 m ascent \| 4\.5–5\.5 hrs \| Grade 3 – Challenging The standout coastal day and a real highlight of the weekend. This dramatic Jurassic Coast walk includes sustained climbs, cliff-top paths and big sea views as we pass through some of Dorset’s most iconic scenery. We finish in Lyme Regis, with free time after the walk to relax on the beach, explore the town, enjoy an ice cream and soak up the seaside atmosphere before returning to accommodation. While we run the classic Seven Sisters hike often, this unique challenge sees us hike the route **twice — in both directions**. It is an epic day of white cliffs, rolling downs, and endless sea views. We begin in the seaside town of **Eastbourne**, heading west along the **South Downs Way** to tackle the Seven Sisters for the first time. The chalk cliffs have been shaped over thousands of years by natural erosion processes, and form one of the most dramatic coastlines in England. In fact, there are now eight Sisters, as coastal erosion has created a new one over time. Along the way we pass **Birling Gap** and the iconic **Belle Tout lighthouse**, famously moved 17 metres inland in 1999 to save it from the encroaching sea. After completing the Seven Sisters, the challenge really begins: we turn around and hike the **entire route back again**. The return journey rewards us with fresh perspectives and equally breathtaking views, as the cliffs and rolling downs look entirely different in reverse. Each hill is a new test, and by the end of the day you’ll have conquered around **16 climbs** in total. **Toughness – can I really do this?** We’re not going to deceive you — for most people this will be a tough physical challenge. We hike over about **16 hills** in total during the day, covering **26km** at a fairly brisk pace (not a stroll). Most fit and regular hikers should be able to take this on, but it is not suitable for beginners. There are safe exit points if needed, but please only sign up if this kind of challenge appeals — the Fourteen Sisters is our **toughest London-based hike**. **No, the hike is not canceled! We will cut it short if need be but I’m confident we can do this! One of the last times (Feb.) it was 12 degrees and three of us showed up and had a fantastic time. I’m confident this hike will be the same :). Just bring water!** **Hike the Scioto Audubon trail. All paved and flat!** **Plan on 3-4 miles. Hike at your own pace, no one left behind.** **Lunch after at Nocterra for those who wish.**
