LCC Nature Walks: THE GREENWAY [East London]
Hello path-beaters and foot-padders! Once again it's that time again: Spring is in the air, or at least it will be (have been?) by the time we touch down in east London for another big step down **The Greenway on April 12th, 2026.**
It was with this hidden gem of an urban nature trail that we kicked off last year's smash-hit nature walking series. Longtime LCC-ers will remember that we didn't actually get very far down the Greenway, thanks to the torturous interference of some no-good developers who put a big fence and a "GREENWAY CLOSED" sign in our way. We diverted and had a lovely hike anyway, but this time we'll be ready.
The Greenway was once known as the Northern Outfall Sewer, a raised sewer line designed to whisk away the industrial filth of London during the height of the Industrial Revolution. At the start of the 20th century, it was sealed up and turned into a linear park for the enjoyment of working-class east London, over which it passes today - from Fish Island all the way over East Ham and on down to Silvertown and the end of the Woolwich Peninsula. We'll try to cover the whole distance, for a walk of about 3-3.5 hours.
The weather should be alright - who can say - but do bring a wind layer and possibly some protection from light rains. Good walking shoes and boots are handy, but this trail shouldn't have much or any mud, since it's paved in quite a few places. A snack or lunch is worth bringing too, but we'll aim for a pub at the end somewhere.
There are bathroom facilities at Hackney Wick, our starting point, as well as at a couple cafes at situated on the eastern end of the route.
Along the way we'll see gorgeous views of the River Lea with its branches, canal sections and forests as well as the Olympic parklands of Hackney and Stratford. To top that off, we'll have a near birds-eye view of the changing human landscape with all the big fuck-off construction sites of Bow Goods Yard, Sweetwater, Pudding Mill etc - a veritable tour of the gentrification process as it rolls on in east London! Natural beauty and political-economic field research - a winning combination, so do join us. Take care and see you on the trail!

We ascend toward **Hadleigh Castle**, perched atop a ridge with captivating views over the Thames Estuary. Built in the 13th century, the castle was a strategic defensive position and later immortalised in a painting by John Constable. We pause to soak in the panoramic views and immerse ourselves in Essexās medieval past that has inspired artists and writers for centuries.
Continuing along the **Thames Estuary Path**, we journey toward **Two Tree Island**, a 634-acre nature reserve surrounded by saltmarsh and tidal mudflats. This peaceful island is crucial for various bird species, providing winter refuge for migratory birds. It is a haven for birdlife, including avocets, brent geese, and Mediterranean gulls.
Finally, we arrive in **Leigh-on-Sea**, a charming seaside town with a proud fishing heritage that still continues today. Known for its vibrant maritime culture and delicious cockles and often ranked as one of the best places to live in the UK, Leigh-on-Sea offers the perfect end to our hike, we have time to explore and also enjoy a drink in a coastal pub.

#1 - the UX of nature
**Meet likeminded UX professionals and discuss ways to use design to reduce burnout.**
ā**The Problem:** With stress and burnout on the rise, how can we use design to help Londoners "switch off" and reconnect with nature?
āFor our first **design impact lab** session, weāll be using the Japanese practice of *Shinrin-yoku* (forest bathing) as a lens to discuss how simple interventions can help us reconnect with nature to reduce stress & burnout.
ā**The Flow (Sunday 12th April 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM):**
* ā**10:00 \| Coffee & Intros \(WatchHouse\, Hanover\):** Weāll meet for coffee to kick things off. You'll meet other attendees and discuss the problem space.
* ā**10:30 \| Observation Walk:** A 15-minute mini fieldwork walk to Hyde Park. You'll observe how the environment changes from a busy urban centre to the park and how this impacts how you feel.
* ā**11:00 \| Shinrinyoku & Brainstorming:** Once we find a quiet spot, weāll dive into the world of *Shinrin-yoku*. Weāll discuss how nature can boost wellbeing and brainstorm "micro-interventions" - simple design ideas (digital or physical) that could encourage more people in London to engage with nature to reduce stress & burnout.
* ā**12:00 \| Closing & Optional Lunch:** We'll wrap up our discussions and those who have time can go for a casual lunch or picnic in the park.
***
ā**Pre-Event Mission:**
āYour mission is to bring **one photo on your phone** of a natural spot that made you feel good recently. It can be a park, a window box, or even a stubborn weed in the pavement. Weāll share these over coffee to explore the different ways in which nature impacts our day to day experiences.
***
ā**The Details:**
* ā**Meeting Point:** WatchHouse, Hanover (Oxford Circus).
* ā**Capacity:** Weāre keeping this to a small group to ensure everyone can connect and contribute. Please ensure your RSVP is up to date and let us know if you're unable to attend.
* ā**Vibe:** Friendly and relaxed! No laptops, just notebooks and fresh air.
***
ā**Why Join?**
āIf youāre a designer or researcher who wants to use your skills for more than just "conversion," come say hi.
āItās a chance to meet like-minded people, learn about forest bathing and brainstorm design solutions to a universal problem.
āIt's also our very first event, and I would love to hear everyone's thoughts and feedback to improve.
ā**Who is this for?**
āOur events are for UX designers, researchers and other strategic and creative thinkers who are passionate about using their skills for social good, not just profit.
ā**Who is the host?**
āHi! š I'm Max - a London based design researcher. Until recently I was based in Tokyo, where I ran a small design agency and spent over 10 years as a meetup organizer. I'm exploring ways to bring designers together to use our skills to work on meaningful problems. If that sounds like something you're interested in, I'd love to have you join!
\*This event is being advertised on multiple sites, so the actual number of attendees will be different to what appears on meetup.

A relaxed Sunday afternoon book club for lesbian and bisexual women, meeting in person.
This is our first event and we will discuss which book we plan to read. Itās low-pressure, calm, and easy to settle into the event.
Women usually range from their 20s through to their 60s. Most sessions are a genuine mix of new faces and returning women, so you wonāt be the only person coming for the first time.
Most people come on their own. Thatās normal here, and we make sure you donāt feel it. Hosts introduce people, keep things flowing, and make the space feel easy rather than awkward.
If youāre feeling nervous, you wonāt be the only one. Many women feel that way before their first book club and end up staying longer than they expected.
**Important**
This is a female-only lesbian space.
That boundary is clear and upheld at events.
If that doesnāt work for you, this wonāt be the right event.

Nature's God: The Heretical Origins of the American Republic, cont'd
This will be our second (and possibly last) meeting on *Nature's God: The Heretical Origins of the American Republic*, by Matthew Stewart. For this meeting, please try to read chapters 4 and 6. (You can skim chapter 5, which is particularly confusing).
**Where did the ideas come from that became the cornerstone of American democracy?**
Americaās founders intended to liberate us not just from one king but from the ghostly tyranny of supernatural religion. Drawing deeply on the study of European philosophy, Matthew Stewart brilliantly tracks the ancient, pagan, and continental ideas from which Americaās revolutionaries drew their inspiration. In the writings of Spinoza, Lucretius, and other great philosophers, Stewart recovers the true meanings of āNatureās God,ā āthe pursuit of happiness,ā and the radical political theory with which the American experiment in self-government began.
[LINK](https://a.co/d/bkTWJNb)
This book is not always an easy read. You may want to make use of AI tools such as ChatGPT. You can ask it questions like:
"What does Matthew Stewart say about happiness in his book Nature's God?" OR:
What does Matthew Stewart say about Spinoza?
This may be our last meeting on this book. If you want to have a third meeting later, on the last two chapters, let me know.
I hope to see you there!
