Known as the book that turned millions of high school students off hot dogs, "The Jungle" was originally published in the socialist newspaper "Appeal to Reason" after muckraking journalist Upton Sinclair spent seven weeks working incognito in Chicago's infamous meatpacking plants. A realistic depiction of the struggles and harsh conditions of plan workers and the corruption of powerful people in charge, the descriptions of health issues and unsanitary practices prompted the passage of sanitary reforms such as the Meat Inspection Act. Sadly, the concerns of the book feel increasingly relevant today.

I have been pretty quiet here for a minute, but recently started going to the weekly Commander night at Hobby Place and really enjoy it. The right balance of competitive and chill. They get a sizeable turnout, no entry fee (though I highly encourage buying a pack or two to thank the store for hosting). Format appears to be a range of difficulties, I know a few top tier decks are floating around, but most players seem chill and play say 3-7 range on a 1-10 scale. Its also nice to see a store hosting in this area. Its metro accessible and lots of parking on the block around it. From Braddock Metro: * Simply walk East on Wythe St for 10 minutes, the store is on your left. Driving: * Its at the corner of the N Washington St and Wythe. Get there and drive around the block to find street parking. I'm told they will stay open until after midnight for Commander. I've stayed as late as almost midnight, despite the store closing at 9pm. Big kudos to the store staff for being that cool.

Michael Martin will discuss his most recent trip to Nepal, a trek to Gokyo Lakes in the Khumbu region. The highest freshwater lake system in the world, Gokyo Lakes offers visitors access to views of the highest mountains in the world, without the press of the highly traveled route to Everest Base Camp. Michael will also briefly discuss his past trips to Nepal, and offer tips to those considering a future visit.

Join the Nordic Culture and Language Exchange Meetup Group at For Five Coffee Roasters Café, 901 K Street NW, Washington D.C. on Saturday, 25 April from 3-5pm. We’ll talk about some of the unique types of comedy found in Nordic culture, including folk humor/joke books, traveling musical comedy artists, the former Scandinavian Vaudeville circuit in America, and current Nordic comedians like Ismo from Finland, Pernille Haaland from Norway, Ari Eldjárn from Iceland, Casper Christensen from Denmark, and Petra Mede from Sweden. Then we’ll have conversation practice, where you are welcome to perform your own “tight five” (slang for 5 min comedy set) in Finnish, Norwegian, Icelandic, Swedish or Danish. Or you can simply read some jokes or discuss funny stories in your preferred Nordic language! **FOR BEGINNERS** If you've ever seen Korean movies or shows, you may have seen characters play with small red cards decorated with flowers and animals. Those cards are called "hwatu" or flower cards. The most popular game played with hwatu is "Go-Stop". Come to this next Hwatu Hangout (Wisteria Edition!), and learn how to play Go-Stop. It can take some time to orient yourself with the cards and rules, but once you do, there's no turning back. It's major fun. **FOR EXPERIENCED PLAYERS** No Tazza-style deck rigging and, most importantly, *no gambling*. We will play with plastic chips to raise the faux stakes, but that's it! We meet to learn and practice American Sign Language and to grow our familiarity with Deaf culture. Facilitated by hearing folks (with a connection to a professional interpreter) using Deaf-created content. People of all ASL skill levels are welcome! As we learn, we hope to connect more with the Deaf community in Central Ohio. Join us as you're able! Come regularly or just once - whatever you're looking for! Each meetup will explore different topics related to ASL/Deaf culture, and will feature time to practice conversation with one another. Just bring yourself and a willingness to learn!

This month we’ll be reading Assassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb. Feel free to come even if you don’t finish the book!

We practice, dance, and enjoy a BYOB bottle of your favorite wine at the Dublin Ballroom off Sawmill, North, and “milonga” is a social event for tango dancing where dancers socialize. A “*practica*” is an informal social event for tango dancing where dancers focus on practicing the dance; while a “*practilonga*” combines the relaxed atmosphere of a “*practica*” with the format of a “milonga.” We are doing it all! ***Cost is $10 payable to the Teacher.*** *Cost is for the cost of the venue and covers some snacks.* We have had fun doing this event in the past. Please arrive promptly as lessons begin at 2pm. Don't worry about bringing a partner as there will be others at the event from outside the group that: a) might have a clue and b) won't step on your toes. The event is BYOB (similar to our Salsa events), so bring your favorite and a wine glass. We will likely find a place for dinner and drinks after the dance.

Private Group. Closed to the Public Knowing ourselves and understanding our abilities is the first step toward wielding our gifts with control and accuracy. In subsequent classes we will verify and hone our talents with activities and discussion. These are hands-on workshops and participation is expected. The goal of our series will be to develop expertise in areas of particular interest such as mediumship, channeling, divination, healing and, etc..
