Hike: Thousand Island Lake (Tai Lam Chung Reservoir)
Hike: Thousand Island Lake (Tai Lam Chung Reservoir)
**Hike: Thousand Island Lake (Tai Lam Chung Reservoir)** **Difficulty Level:** 3 out of 5 **Distance:** 15 km **Time:** 5+ hours **Description:** This hike is another favorite because of its unique characteristics. The hiking path loops around the perimeter of the reservoir with views of islands that seem to jet out in every direction. We'll visit a lookout perch that will help us see the "thousand islands" and the surrounding mountains in the distance. This is a great time to take some pictures and to sit and enjoy the impressive views. This hike is not particularly difficult as the highest elevation is about 230 meters; however, it is long at 15kms. **Note**: 1/2 of the trail is natural earth and the other 1/2 is paved. **Some highlights:** The impressive "Thousand Islands" and mountains. **What to bring:** * 2-3 liters of water * Snacks to eat along the way (sandwich, fruits, nuts, etc) * Comfortable shoes * Sunglasses * Headgear (cap/hat) * Sunscreen * Bug Spray * In case of Rain: plan accordingly **Toilets:** There are at least 2 toilets along the way. There may be additional toilets along the way but I am not sure. **Stores:** Pick up any drinks and snacks at the Tuen Mun Station. **Meeting Point:** Tuen Mun Station - Exit F2. Once everyone arrives, we'll take bus 43 from the Tuen Mun Town Center - Town Plaza to the trailhead at So Kwun Tuen (about 850 m/12-minute walk). When we finish, we will return to So Kwun Tuen. **Time:** 10:00 am (SHARP!) IMPORTANT: Out of respect to the members that arrive on time, we will only be able to wait a maximum of 5 minutes. Should you arrive after 10:05 am, I will no longer be answering phone calls or responding to messages as I need to give my time and attention to those that have arrived on time.

June discussion - "Five Decembers"
June discussion - "Five Decembers"
Our book for June 2026 is *Five Decembers,* by James Kestrel, winner of the 2022 Edgar Award for Best Novel. “War, imprisonment, torture, romance…The novel has an almost operatic symmetry, and Kestrel turns a beautiful phrase.” *New York Times* *"Five Decembers* is a gripping thriller, a staggering portrait of war, and a heartbreaking love story, as unforgettable as *All the Light We Cannot See*." From the publisher *December 1941. America teeters on the brink of war, and in Honolulu, Hawaii, police detective Joe McGrady is assigned to investigate a homicide that will change his life forever. Because the trail of murder he uncovers will lead him across the Pacific, far from home and the woman he loves; and though the U.S. doesn’t know it yet, a Japanese fleet is already steaming toward Pearl Harbor.* This month’s discussion will be held at Commaa in Sheung Wan on the 7th of June @ 2:00 pm. Please note: the café asks that for large groups, guests buy at least one beverage per person ($60 minimum). They have a selection of sweet treats, coffees, teas, and other drinks available for purchase. After the discussion, we will choose the next book by group vote. Please bring your suggestions for future books!

Shut Up & Write! Kingsdale Shopping Center
Greetings writers! Come down and join your fellow wordsmiths for one hour of uninterrupted writing time in the upper level of the Market District Supermarket in Upper Arlington. The main entrance of the shopping center opens onto stairs/elevator leading up to the 2nd floor cafe section where we will have a table displaying a sign with the Shut Up & Write logo. Writing is largely a solitary craft. Practicing with others in a community setting may be the thing you need to fire your own routine. We’ll meet on Wednesday evenings, starting the clock at 6:30, following a brief period of introductions. This is solid writing time and all inclusive. Any project is acceptable, be it fiction, non -fiction, work or homework assignment. All is welcome and will remain private to you. The market boasts a Starbucks, a full service bar and various affordable food options. Parking is plentiful, free Wifi is provided as well as outlets for charging your devices, though they are somewhat limited, so plan accordingly. Show up as early as you like, or stay late. This group tends to socialize some, both before and after the alloted time, but this is not mandatory to you. Feel free to come and go as you please and late arrivals are welcome. Let’s meet and share discussion of the James Baldwin short story collection, Going to Meet The Man.
Speak Easy (Storytelling)
Speak Easy (Storytelling)
The topic for June is "Roadtrip" Speak Easy: true stories, told live. The idea is simple: an audience, an open microphone, and great stories. Hilarious, gripping, poignant- it's up to you. Audiences are invited to come to listen or come to tell as folks from all corners of Columbus offer their stories live on stage! Held at Wild Goose Creative's warm, intimate space, this night of tales occurs on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Doors open at 6:30 pm, show starts at 7:00 pm. Please arrive early if you want to tell, as we generally only have room for a limited number of tellers, and the sign-up sheet has a tendency to fill up fast. Formed around the idea that people need stories--they're what hold and draw us together--SpeakEasy celebrates the strangeness and commonness of being human. And in a world of smartphones, Facebook, Twitter, and more . . . it gives people a real, breathing, in-person way to connect. The night is geared for true stories of all kinds, taking the best tales told around kitchen tables, in darkened pubs, on the street corner, and at late-night parties and giving them an audience. Speak Easy is also a great outlet for performers, writers, and artists looking to share their favorite stories and perfect their skills. We strongly encourage tellers to please tell the story rather than read it so we keep within the spirit of good storytelling and stay engaged with the audience. All are welcome. Hang around after the show for a drink and build community!

She has exposed her legs in a biblical city, an act they deem forbidden, and their judgement will echo on through her adolescence. When our narrator finally admits to her mother that she is queer, her mother's response only intensifies a sense of shame: 'You exist too much,' she tells her daughter. Told in vignettes that flash between the U.S. and the Middle East--from New York to Jordan, Lebanon, and Palestine--Zaina Arafat's debut novel traces her protagonist's progress from blushing teen to sought-after DJ and aspiring writer.
