Join us for dinner and discussion about queer books! For our next book, we will be reading **“The Song of Achilles”** by **Madeline Miller**. **Blurb:** Achilles, "the best of all the Greeks," son of the cruel sea goddess Thetis and the legendary king Peleus, is strong, swift, and beautiful, irresistible to all who meet him. Patroclus is an awkward young prince, exiled from his homeland after an act of shocking violence. Brought together by chance, they forge an inseparable bond, despite risking the gods' wrath. They are trained by the centaur Chiron in the arts of war and medicine, but when word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped, all the heroes of Greece are called upon to lay siege to Troy in her name. Seduced by the promise of a glorious destiny, Achilles joins their cause, and torn between love and fear for his friend, Patroclus follows. Little do they know that the cruel Fates will test them both as never before and demand a terrible sacrifice. **The Plan** 19:00 Meeting @ the restaurant 19:15 Dinner & discussion 20:45 Choosing a short novel for July 21:00 End **Dinner** The name of the restaurant will be announced in the WhatsApp group chat. **What to do** 1\. Informal Filmmakers Meetup & Drinks
We will be meeting at Forever Lounge in Causeway Bay on Sunday, May 17th. We will begin with informal introductions, where you will have the opportunity to talk about yourself and your background, experiences and/or goals). Your host Ben will introduce a new topic (this week we will discuss different ways of lighting a scene on a zero-low budget), and finally we will wrap up by discussing any projects we are working on or would like to get started. The emphasis is always on the creative, artistic, and collaborative aspects of filmmaking. All are welcome, and no experience is necessary. Questions and opinions are always encouraged. If you have any materials (scripts, showreels, raw/edited footage, etc.) that you would like to share, please feel free to bring it along, but all you will need is enthusiasm and confidence! Resonance & Ritual: Candle-Lit Sound Journey with Tea Ceremony
Resonance & Ritual: Candle-Lit Sound Journey with Tea Ceremony
*An intimate evening for deep rest, reflection, and renewal.* **Resonance and Ritual: Sound Journey & Tea Ceremony** Step out of the Hong Kong work rhythm and into an evening of nervous system restoration, deep presence, and gentle connection. **Resonance and Ritual** is a small-group sound journey and tea ceremony created especially for busy professionals who want to slow down without “checking out” of their lives. We’ll begin with a candle lighting intention ritual. Then we'll gently settle into a guided sound journey using sound bowls, chimes, and other soothing instruments to help your body release tension and your mind soften out of work mode. From there, we transition into a mindful tea ceremony, inviting you to experience tea as a grounding ritual — one sip, one breath, one shared moment at a time. This experience is ideal if you: * Feel mentally and emotionally drained from long workdays * Find it hard to switch off, even when you’re home * Miss feeling present, connected, and at ease in your own body **What’s included** * Guided sound journey (approx. 40 minutes) * Mindful tea ceremony with high-quality loose-leaf tea * Mats/props provided (you may bring your own if you prefer) * A calm, supportive space to integrate and reflect **Event details** * Date: Sunday, 17th May * Time: 6:30 - 8:00 PM * Venue: Sacred Space Therapy and Wellness Studio, Cheung Sha Wan * Capacity: Limited to 7 participants for depth and comfort * Exchange: * Early Bird - 375 HKD (First 3) * Standard - 420 HKD * Group (2+) - 390 HKD **What to bring** * Comfortable clothing suitable for lying down * A light sweater or shawl * Optional: journal and pen

Book Discussion: The Last Kings of Shanghai by Kaufman
Book Discussion: The Last Kings of Shanghai by Kaufman
Unlike the usual BYOB format of this group, this is an **assigned reading format.** **You are expected to have read some of the book** to join the discussion :) I am excited to finally read this book, its an award-winning, one of the most highly rated non fiction books across Goodreads/Amazon and for good reason! About the book: # "In vivid detail... examines the little-known history of two extraordinary dynasties."--The Boston Globe An epic, multigenerational story of two rival dynasties who flourished in Shanghai and Hong Kong as twentieth-century China surged into the modern era, from the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Shanghai, 1936. The Cathay Hotel, located on the city's famous waterfront, is one of the most glamorous in the world. Built by Victor Sassoon--billionaire playboy and scion of the Sassoon dynasty--the hotel hosts a who's who of global celebrities: Noel Coward has written a draft of Private Lives in his suite and Charlie Chaplin has entertained his wife-to-be. And a few miles away, Mao and the nascent Communist Party have been plotting revolution. By the 1930s, the Sassoons had been doing business in China for a century, rivaled in wealth and influence by only one other dynasty--the Kadoories. These two Jewish families, both originally from Baghdad, stood astride Chinese business and politics for more than 175 years, profiting from the Opium Wars; surviving Japanese occupation; courting Chiang Kai-shek; and losing nearly everything as the Communists swept into power. In The Last Kings of Shanghai, Jonathan Kaufman tells the remarkable history of how these families participated in an economic boom that opened China to the world, but remained blind to the country's deep inequality and to the political turmoil at their doorsteps. In a story stretching from Baghdad to Hong Kong to Shanghai to London, Kaufman enters the lives and minds of these ambitious men and women to forge a tale of opium smuggling, family rivalry, political intrigue, and survival. Note: * **location subject to change** but we'll keep it around Wan Chai District. * You **must** buy something at the venue. * **First timer attendees** are requested to contribute 20HKD to fund the Meetup Group Subscription. * No-Shows make the host sad (please update your attendance)

Shut Up & Write! Kingsdale Shopping Center
Shut Up & Write! Kingsdale Shopping Center
Greetings writers! Come down and join your fellow wordsmiths for one hour of uninterrupted writing time in the upper level of the Market District Supermarket in Upper Arlington. The main entrance of the shopping center opens onto stairs/elevator leading up to the 2nd floor cafe section where we will have a table displaying a sign with the Shut Up & Write logo. Writing is largely a solitary craft. Practicing with others in a community setting may be the thing you need to fire your own routine. We’ll meet on Wednesday evenings, starting the clock at 6:30, following a brief period of introductions. This is solid writing time and all inclusive. Any project is acceptable, be it fiction, non -fiction, work or homework assignment. All is welcome and will remain private to you. The market boasts a Starbucks, a full service bar and various affordable food options. Parking is plentiful, free Wifi is provided as well as outlets for charging your devices, though they are somewhat limited, so plan accordingly. Show up as early as you like, or stay late. This group tends to socialize some, both before and after the alloted time, but this is not mandatory to you. Feel free to come and go as you please and late arrivals are welcome. The cafe may be noisy on occasion so headphones/ earbuds are reccommended as you see fit. Please try to RSVP if possible so that we may grab enough seats for all—the venue can be busy at times. Feel free to message me privately wth any questions and/ or concerns you may have. Happy writing!
Speak Easy (Storytelling)
Speak Easy (Storytelling)
The topic for May is "Ink" Speak Easy: true stories, told live. The idea is simple: an audience, an open microphone, and great stories. Hilarious, gripping, poignant- it's up to you. Audiences are invited to come to listen or come to tell as folks from all corners of Columbus offer their stories live on stage! Held at Wild Goose Creative's warm, intimate space, this night of tales occurs on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Doors open at 6:30 pm, show starts at 7:00 pm. Please arrive early if you want to tell, as we generally only have room for a limited number of tellers, and the sign-up sheet has a tendency to fill up fast. Formed around the idea that people need stories--they're what hold and draw us together--SpeakEasy celebrates the strangeness and commonness of being human. And in a world of smartphones, Facebook, Twitter, and more . . . it gives people a real, breathing, in-person way to connect. The night is geared for true stories of all kinds, taking the best tales told around kitchen tables, in darkened pubs, on the street corner, and at late-night parties and giving them an audience. Speak Easy is also a great outlet for performers, writers, and artists looking to share their favorite stories and perfect their skills. We strongly encourage tellers to please tell the story rather than read it so we keep within the spirit of good storytelling and stay engaged with the audience. All are welcome. Hang around after the show for a drink and build community!
