Madalitso Band: Film + Live concert
Madalitso Band: Film + Live concert
**Let's watch a documentary film about an inspirational band from Malawi (the Madalitso Band) and then enjoy their live concert.** We will start by watching the documentary film "The Banjo Boys" by film director Johan Nayar - telling the tale of a two-man band from Malawi, formed by Yobu Maligwa and Yosefe Kalekeni. Film preview: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LrjHhsxh98](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LrjHhsxh98) Having learnt their story we will then have the chance to see them in person - to experience their **live concert** and enjoy dancing to their life-affirming African rhythms in the Troubador, a popular music venue in South-West London. The band members have overcome enormous personal and economic barriers - now is a rare chance to appreciate their unique sound and to be inspired by their resilient and joyous spirit. This is a sold-out event but I have bought the **last 5 tickets** for our group. The cost is **£30** (please pay me in cash on the evening), which covers the cost of the ticket and a souvenir Banjo Boys badge. Please do not reply Yes to the event unless you are committed to coming, as tickets have been bought already in order to give members a chance to attend this special occasion. Food and drink is available at the venue. **The Troubadour** was founded in 1954 and is now one of London's oldest independent music venues. It quickly became a vibrant cultural hub, with artists, actors, writers and musicians from all over the world. It established itself as a cornerstone venue in the British folk revival, hosting iconic names such as Bob Dylan, Davey Graham, Martin Carthy, Judy Collins, Paul Simon and many more. [https://www.troubadourlondon.com](https://www.troubadourlondon.com/) The Troubador is near West Brompton (District Tube line / Overground / Train station) or Earls Court (District/Piccadilly Tube lines). The address is 265-267 Old Brompton Road, London SW5 9JA.
The Harder They Come
The Harder They Come
Bullet in the Head (1990)
Bullet in the Head (1990)
Made during the John Woo hot streak that ran from the first A Better Tomorrow film in 1986 to 1992's Hard Boiled\*, Bullet in the Head departs from his usual Hong Kong cops and robbers beat to something more political (with a small 'p'). Woo mainstay Tony Leung stars alongside HK pop legend Jacky Cheung, and the slow-motion gunplay, shifting interpersonal dynamics and soap opera-level melodrama that pepper Woo's movies are all present. Leung and Cheung play two of a group of three friends who decide to leave Hong Kong in the 1960s for Siagon, where they decide there's money to be made during the Vietnam war. There are definite similarities between this and The Deer Hunter - needless to say, turning to criminality during one of the more notorious wars of the 20th century isn't exactly smooth going. The trailer doesn't have subtitles but the film will: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16Bs9jThIW4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16Bs9jThIW4) And tickets are [here](https://princecharlescinema.com/prince-charles-cinema/booknow/31624495/), I'm in D10. We can meet at 8pm for a pre-drink at the Bear and Staff around the corner and head in afterwards. \*Or 1997's Face/Off, if you're partial to Woo's Hollywood work.

Cocktails & RSA Unplugged Concert: Hannah Wicklund, Suze Harper, Naomi Ost
Cocktails & RSA Unplugged Concert: Hannah Wicklund, Suze Harper, Naomi Ost
Hi All **I know a good few have fallen in love with The RSA and their gorgeous lounge and cocktail bar, MUSE, and our last two have been at the even more historic space, the Tavern Room. Let's just tell you how magical this place is. .. Dickens used to write his novels IN THIS ROOM. Benjamin Franklin was a fellow of the RSA AT THE TIME OF THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR. Past and present Fellows include Judi Dench, Herbie Hancock and Steven Hawking ... shall I go on? It's one of the most beautiful Georgian Houses in London, just off Strand, pretty much the original 18th century Coffee House / debating society. Now you know why I get excited inviting you here!** Our Friday 5th June Unplugged concert features US touring artist Hannah Wicklund, who has headlined the world famous Troubadour in LA, played Eric Clapton's own Crossroads Festival and performed the length and breath of the US and Europe too. Joined by the wonderful NZ artist Suze Harper and English Rose singer-songwriter Naomi Ost .. we cannot wait! * *6pm onwards - We meet from 6pm for cocktails and chats in the lovely Muse Bar, before settling in at The Tavern Room for the salon style concert.* * *7pm approx - The unplugged concert starts with intervals inbetween each artist* * *9.45pm onwards - cocktail bar open until 11 for after drinks!* **ABOUT THE LINEUP** US artist HANNAH WICKLUND has toured since she was 16, sharing stages with acts like Joan Jett, Marcus King, Deep Purple, and Greta Van Fleet, and has graced the stage at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Festival, among many others around the world. Her last studio record, ‘The Prize’ earned the honor of being named Rolling Stone Brazil’s #1 Rock Album of 2024. Hannah’s music explores themes of womanhood and of the battle between light and dark that so many of us in this world can relate to. New Zealand born SUZE HARPER was studying for her final year of law school in Paris when she became re-acquainted with her deep musical instinct and passion for live performance. After performing in Parisian jazz clubs and street busking, she honed her original sound in London—melding jazz, soul, blues, pop, and classical, leaving a career in law behind. NAOMI OST is a singer-songwriter with a big heart, a lot of feelings, and a firm belief in the healing powers of a well-timed cup of tea and a banging chorus. Drawing on the lyrical intimacy of Joni Mitchell, the emotional resonance of Eva Cassidy, and the relatability of Carole King, she writes with the instinct of someone who needs to write: not to shock or provoke, but to soothe, to process, to nourish. Book your ticket here - use our **LONDONLIVE** discount code to book: **[BOOK YOUR T|ICKETS](https://link.dice.fm/M20b86c010c3)** Can't wait to see you there for a cocktail or two! They are just great .. quite apart from the music! Lorraine xx

'Sole to Soul' Walk & Talk (No. 3)
'Sole to Soul' Walk & Talk (No. 3)
Join us for a chilled out, circular, stroll around Wanstead Park. The Park is a peaceful space with old trees, open grassland, woodland paths and a beautiful chain of lakes. It has history, with traces of the grand Wanstead House estate that once stood there. We'll take this time to slow down, engage and enjoy nature. We ask that you bring a specific topic you'd like to explore, or a question that's slightly unusual to the every day thinking we get caught in. Examples could be something like: * If you were to be born again, which career would you try out? * What's the best decision you made in the last year? * What is the smallest thing you could change in your life that would have the biggest positive impact right now? No need to bring the cleverest question. Come curious, open, prepared to share and ready to hear new perspectives and maybe even meet life long friends. (See previous events for questions posed from previous walks.) We'll meet at the park entrance at 10.30am (see photo and map). We'll wait until 10.45am (only) if we know someone is delayed. We'll share our questions all together and then head off as a (loose) group, in pairs or threes, returning to the same park gates around 12.30pm. Access to the park entrance on Wanstead Park Road is easy by public transport, Central Line or Elizabeth Line. By joining the walk you (of course) take full responsibility for your wellbeing. We look forward to meeting you!

Feel Good Friday: POWER BALLAD at the Gateway Film Center + SHAKE NO. 8!
Join us as we get together to see Paul Rudd in the latest comedy-drama-musical from John Carney, POWER BALLAD! The film follows a washed-up wedding singer, a fading boy band singer and a stolen hit song. Here’s a description, trailer and plan for this event: DESCRIPTION: Rick, a washed-up wedding singer, and Danny, a fading boy band star, bond over music and a late-night jam session. When Danny turns Rick's song into a hit, Rick sets out to reclaim the recognition he believes he deserves. Power Ballad is written/directed by John Carney, the master of the modern musical and creative mind behind Once, Begin Again and Sing Street! It stars Paul Rudd, Nick Jonas, Peter McDonald, Marcella Plunkett, Havana Rose Liu and Jack Reynor. BUZZ & ACCLAIM: The film premiered to rave reviews at this year’s Dublin International Film Festival where critics call it “a sure-fired crowd-pleaser” that “just might be the feel-good hit of the year!” Others say, “Paul Rudd delivers a career-best performance in this charmer” that’s both “hilarious and deeply moving." The film continues John Carney’s “long run of success with yet another charmer” and “a sharp, hopeful crowd-pleaser that strikes the right notes!” SUMMER OF ICE CREAM, VOL 2: SHAKE NO. 8! Ranked the #1 Ice Cream Shop in Columbus, this is a perfect early stop on our Summer of Ice Cream!
