Documentary—A Kabul Music Diary
Documentary—A Kabul Music Diary
Salam, This is a special screening dedicated to the work of John Baily, Emeritus Professor of Ethnomusicology and the former Head of the Afghanistan Music Unit at Goldsmiths, University of London. John has been closely connected to the music of Afghanistan since 1973, and his contribution to the field has shaped how Afghan musical heritage is studied, taught, and understood. The film follows John’s return to Kabul a few months after the fall of the Taliban to observe how music was re-emerging in public life. The film documents a range of musical expressions — from traditional rubab performances to a student pop group experimenting with electronic instruments. Beyond its observational richness, the film captures a moment of cultural reawakening under shifting political realities. Showing this work now feels especially important as it reminds us of the fragility and resilience of cultural practice, and of the role film can play in witnessing, remembering, and honouring forms of expression that are once again under threat. Doors will open at 5.30pm, this will be an opportunity to meet before the film starts at 6pm. The screening (52 minutes) will be followed by a Q&A moderated by André Singer. We’ll linger around after the documentary to share impressions. This film event is organised in partnership with the Afghanistan Society. Manhunter (1986)
Manhunter (1986)
Michael Mann's Manhunter is technically a prequel to Silence of the Lambs (it was remade as the vastly inferior Red Dragon), where FBI agent and master criminal profiler Will Graham is tasked with catching The Tooth Fairy, a gruesome serial killer targeting families during the full moon. But Graham is meant to be recovering after the traumatic ordeal of recently catching Hannibal Lecter and remains psychologically fragile. And he's up against the clock. Anyway, this is legitimately in my all-time top five movies. Oh, you need more? The casting is superb, with William Petersen, fresh from To Live and Die in LA, playing Graham perfectly as a damaged individual battling against the odds. Brian Cox's Lecter is far more down to earth than Hopkins' and he almost steals the film in his brief screentime. But what really makes this stand out is Dante Spinotti's stunning cinematography and the fantastic score. Synthesisers, neon and designer stubble baby, this is the 80's *in excelsis* and it is magisterial. Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zl6IxPJSVc Movie starts at 6.15pm so let's meet in the bar upstairs beforehand and maybe grab one there afterwards.

Coffee Chats: Have The Young (20s) Become Boring?
Coffee Chats: Have The Young (20s) Become Boring?
Time is precious. Here we value non-boring valuable chats and interactions that are fully engaging, soulfully enriching, inspiring, and leave you a bit wiser than when you arrived. In that spirit, today’s hosted laid back social coffee chat will offer a perfect haven for the inquisitive & curious to share views on the following intriguing observation. Growing up in the west, Friday and Saturday nights meant going out with your mates for fun to enjoy music, dancing, drinking, eating, comedy, singing, fun silly moments and random conversations with strangers. Taking drugs even. Tuesdays and Thursdays evenings was for doing the same stuff but with work collegues hence the workplace use to be a great place to make new lifelong friends. Weekend daytimes were for doing healthy but social stuff like playing sports, pub lunches, visting galleries/museums and watching movies together at the Cinema or mate's house. Fast‑forward 2026 and it feels like everything has shifted: Despite public transport running all night (it wasn't when I was in my teens/ early 20s yet my peer group stayed out late most weekends) - "young" people head home at 10pm, skip the dance floor for board games in the pub, avoid bar banter, jokes and rarely engage in organic spontaneous chats with strangers. Whatsmore the stats are wild — data show virginity rates among men hitting record highs by age 30, social anxiety and social skills off the charts. So what's happened? We’ll explore questions like: * Is this just nostalgia talking, or has something genuinely shifted? * Why has typical multi generational fun pastimes (1950s to 2010s) lost its spark for the 20‑somethings? * How much does health, economics, mobile phones, social media and gaming explain this new trend? * Are certain professions (like tech/IT) changing the social landscape, or just attracting already‑very introverted people? * Why are some stats so **contradictory**? Think higher reported male virginity rates by 30 alongside rising STI rates in young people. Despite tanking alcohol sales - UK alcohol related death rates per capita are still rising. What's going on? * Target audience demographics for commericial music radio stations (Capital, Kiss etc) is still 18 to 24 suggesting young people still consume music and other popular culture but are not going out to enjoy it. Why? * Is it harder for younger people to make genuine life-long friends today and if so why? * Dancing is natural to all of us - every kid moves instinctively to music. So beyond a less joyous social life what happens when these innate behaviours get suppressed as adults? What has this healthy exercise and creative expression been replaced with? * AI is predicted to take over technical job and tasks - the most future‑proof skills will be things like interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence built through real‑world socialising. Employers already complain that young people lack these innate skills. How will they get these non AI jobs? * Levels of emotional intelligence and self-awareness particularly amongst men are at an all time low. Wiill social anxiety worsen further as the introversion trend accelerates? * What does all this mean for dating, relationships, and starting families? Expect lively debate, sharp humour, and a host (a former journalist) that isn’t afraid to ask the awkward questions. Bring your curiosity, your stories, and your caffeine tolerance — we’ll stir the pot on whether the young have really become more boring or have they’re just discovered new fun activities - if so what are they? And if you are in your 20s - I would love to hear your views! Lucas - The singing break-dancing Old Fucker

Mahler: Symphony No.10 (arr. Barshai) @ RFH
Mahler: Symphony No.10 (arr. Barshai) @ RFH
**\*Please purchase a ticket before marking your attendance - see below to book\*** Join us at the Royal Festival Hall as Vladimir Jurowski conducts Rudolph Barshai's arrangement of Mahler's unfinished 10th Symphony. In a continuation of performances of 'interesting' arrangements of works at the RFH (I previously attended a concert of Beethoven 9 arr. Mahler), here's Rudolf Barshai's rarely heard arrangement of Mahler 10. Whilst I'm familiar with the Cooke/Matthews/Goldschmidt edition, I've never managed to hear this symphony live in any form. It is certainly up their with being one of my favourite Mahler symphonies, so I hope Barshai doesn't go too bonkers with his orchestration in this version! **PROGRAMME** * Mahler: Symphony No. 10 (arr. Barshai) London Philharmonic Orchestra Vladimir Jurowski conductor **TICKETS** Full price tickets range from £16-£62. The booking page can be found here:- [https://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/whats-on/mahlers-tenth/](https://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/whats-on/mahlers-tenth/) I am sat in the choir in seat B29 facing the conductor if anyone wishes to sit nearby.
