The Sylvans rapid debate session will cover two shorter topics. Solicitor Jonathan Harker discovers the vampire’s horrifying nature inside Dracula’s castle and narrowly escapes. In England Dracula preys upon Lucy Westenra whose mysterious illness confuses her friends until Professor Van Helsing identifies vampirism. After Lucy dies and rises undead Van Helsing and his companions hunt Dracula relentlessly. Mina Harker, Jonathan’s wife, becomes Dracula’s next target, creating a desperate race against time. Tracking the Count back to Transylvania the group destroys him before sunset freeing Mina from his curse and ending Dracula’s reign of terror. Open weekly Maracatu percussion classes for all levels – beginners to advanced – Newbies very welcome! The classes are run by Sam Alexander, a professional musician, teacher, and artist. He leads the community group Baque de Axé in London, which plays traditional Maracatu Carnival percussion music from Recife in Pernambuco, Brazil. Everyone who's been nagging me to put this on, well you got it! A night of open-room karaoke in the middle of London. Why open room? Bigger song selection, no one feels under pressure to sing and no one has to pay. We all want 2 things from justice. We want the guilty caught and held, so the rest of us are safe. We also want to be sure we never crush someone who did nothing wrong. But we can't have both. Lean toward catching every criminal, and innocent people get swept up. Lean toward protecting the innocent, and some dangerous people slip through. Benjamin Franklin landed on one side: better a hundred guilty go free than one innocent suffer. The trouble starts when those hundred are real, and they're out. What is prison actually for? to punish, to protect us, or to fix people? When a sentence is short, is that mercy or is that punishment of the victim? Which mistake can you live with: jailing the innocent, or freeing the guilty? Stop Making Sense was a landmark cinematic achievement, a concert film made by an established film director that looked and sounded amazing. But it wasn't the first. In the middle of a decade that encompassed Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and King of Comedy, Martin Scorsese filmed the star-studded farewell concert by The Band and he did so in style: seven cameras, at least three of which were operated by top Hollywood cinematographers. So, who were The Band? Bob Dylan chose them as his backing band when he went electric. After splitting off, they made a clutch of very good folk rock albums and their best known songs (The Weight, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, Up on Cripple Creek) are regarded as classics. After about a decade together, they decided to say goodbye with an extravaganza of a show that illustrated their standing in the musical community - the guest list of performers included Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, The Staple Singers, Neil Diamond, Muddy Waters and Ringo Starr. This discussion will look at the thinking that determines right and wrong actions and the values and assumptions underlying these decisions.
