Here's what some of our other students have to say about our classes:
Dean "I started Bushin a few months ago. Having done martial arts for 5 years in another art, I was open to new ideas of what may come with this one. I am thrilled to say it has been fantastic. My instructor Stephen is a legend, he knows what he's talking about and has a no bs way of getting to a point. He is a lover of martial arts and it shows.
His enthusiasm rubs off onto myself and the other students which creates a great learning environment.
This art is marvellous, the group is a humble yet enthusiastic class of students coming to learn. I felt like I was part of the group the moment I joined. Higher belted student don't have an ego and are happy to help and train along side anyone in the class. Joining Bushin has been a tremendous experience."
Konrad "Great place to learn self-defence . Coach with a passion to MMA show you how to react and defend yourself"
Penny "I was completely new to martial arts so I didn't really know what I wanted to learn but I love the way they teach a mixture of martial arts and have a set syllabus. I felt like I was learning boxing, Kickboxing, jujitsu and self defence all in the same class which was great value for money!"
Elizabeth "Great class for beginners and those with experience. Stephen is so welcoming and has been great at helping me find equipment and modify exercises to help with my mobility issues! Really recommend for anyone wanting to try martial arts or get fit in a friendly atmosphere :)"
Lucia "I joined Bushin after a friend of mine was attacked in London and I thought it was a good idea to learn how to defend myself in case something like that happened to me as well. I didn't have any previous experience of self defense or fighting and I thought that this would hold me back, but it was definitely not the case: people in Bushin are so welcoming and nice to each other, always ready to help - it's truly a place for every level, from beginner to black belt. It's much more than a self defense class, it's real street fighting and a super good workout as well , but most importantly, it's great fun! I highly recommend it"

Film Club: When History Chooses (secret film)
This year’s films all revolve around the theme of “**choice**” – plenty of opportunity for philosophical exploration!
**This month:** How much freedom do we really have when history is making choices for us? Set against a period of political upheaval and civil war, this powerful drama follows a group of people whose ambitions, loyalties, relationships, and ideals are tested by events far beyond their control. As the world around them fractures, they must decide what to hold on to, what to sacrifice, and whether conviction can survive catastrophe. A moving exploration of choice under pressure: when every option carries a cost, what does it mean to choose well? **Can you guess the film? Or come and find out on the day!**
PFA Film Club hosts free screenings of thought-provoking films, followed by a discussion about the raised philosophical issues, for general public. In 2026 meetings are held every third WEDNESDAY of the month at the Cafe of St. Hilda's East Community Centre, 18 Club Row, London E2 7EY. The nearest station is **Shoreditch High Street** on the Overground. This screening will **start at 6pm** due to a longer film, and we need to vacate the building by 9:00pm. We offer complimentary light refreshments during the event.
For the most up-to-date schedule of the upcoming film club events, visit our [website](http://pfalondon.org/#rec767601373).

We Don’t Just Watch the Film, We Talk About What It Reveals
Some films are easy to watch.
Then, after the credits, they quietly stay in your head and start asking questions.
Hutsulka Ksenya is one of those films.
At first, it looks light, colourful and musical. There is humour, romance, beauty, tradition, awkwardness, charm, and that strange human talent for making life more complicated than it needs to be.
But underneath the surface, the film opens a much deeper conversation.
Why do people behave the way they do?
How much of our thinking is really our own?
Where do cultural stereotypes begin?
What do we repeat because we genuinely believe it, and what do we repeat simply because we inherited it?
How do love, pride, shame, money, status and belonging quietly shape our choices?
This event is not just a film screening.
We will watch Hutsulka Ksenya together, then stay for an open, guided conversation about the mentalities, stereotypes, behaviour patterns and psychological traps revealed in the film.
You do not need to be Ukrainian.
You do not need to know anything about Ukrainian cinema.
You do not need a psychology background.
You only need curiosity and a willingness to notice what usually stays unnoticed.
This is a space for people from different backgrounds to watch the same story and see how differently we read it.
Who is this for?
Anyone interested in film, culture, psychology, identity, human behaviour, community conversations, or simply seeing something different and meaningful.
This event is open to everyone.

💔🎬 THE MISFITS
🎬 **Marilyn Monroe’s final film is a poignant and poetic drama, infused with the promise of what could have been had she had more time to explore her skills as a dramatic performer.**
👋 **Hi guys!** **The 100th anniversary of Marilyn Monroe**’s birth, and a two-month retrospective at BFI Southbank, is the occasion for the re-release of her most serious and poignant film.
**The Misfits** was directed by John Houston and written by her then husband Arthur Miller. It was intended as a gift, offering Monroe **a more complex, dramatic role**. Their marriage imploded during the heated production, but **Monroe delivers one of her finest performances**.
Appearing to **harness the pain of her own life**, she imbues Roslyn with a raw vulnerability, showing a passionate, vulnerable, childlike **free spirit** who finds a complex kind of excitement and freedom.Gable and Clift are superb, but the film would not have soared without Monroe.
**The Meetup:** We’ll be meeting for **pre-drinks** at **2:00 PM** at the **BFI Bar**. At 3pm we'll go to NFT Screen 2.

Spring Reset Retreat: Intuitive Painting and Sound Immersion
**TICKETS AVAILABLE ✨ [HERE](https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/spring-reset-retreat-intuitive-painting-and-sound-immersion-tickets-1986941342041?utm-campaign=social&utm-content=attendeeshare&utm-medium=discovery&utm-term=listing&utm-source=cp&aff=ebdsshcopyurl)** ✨
Slow down with a 3-hour experience of intuitive painting and sound immersion in a riverside studio by the Thames.
Step into *BE Ka Art Studio*, Elena's atelier in *Trinity Buoy Wharf*, for a Saturday morning of creative exploration, mindful reflection, and a gentle, restorative reset.
Creative practice is not just about making art — it nurtures your wellbeing.
Research shows that creative activities can reduce cortisol (the body’s main stress hormone), ease physical tension and pain, and support emotional balance.
When you enter a state of creative flow, the brain shifts into patterns similar to meditation, promoting relaxation, clarity, and presence.
Art-making also stimulates the vagus nerve, activating the body’s “rest and digest” response and guiding the nervous system toward calm and safety.
Sound also plays a powerful role in this process: immersive tones, such as those of singing bowls, deepen relaxation and enhance this meditative state, helping to lower stress, ease anxiety, and slow the heart rate, stimulating theta and delta brainwave activity.
Through intuitive painting and sound, you are invited to regulate emotions, reconnect with yourself, and feel more grounded.
Art is not about perfection or outcome — it’s a space to process, release, and return to yourself.
**Creativity is medicine.**
**Join for a creative reset✨**
### **The Experience**
This half-day retreat (approx. 3 hours) is designed as a space to slow down, reconnect, and explore creativity without pressure.
This is an intimate group experience, with a maximum of six participants, ensuring personalised attention and a deeply focused atmosphere.

Arrival and welcome. A short walk around the site to settle in and take in the surroundings.

**14:30**
Return to the studio for a brief guided breathing and body-release exercise and meditation to help you arrive fully into the creative space.
You’ll then move into an open, intuitive making session. There are no rules or expectations — you’re free to explore, experiment, and create at your own pace.

## **📍Location – Trinity Buoy Wharf**

Stalker
Based on the novel Roadside Picnic, it is NO picnic, but rather one of the masterpieces of world cinema. Andrei Tarkovsky's 1979 Soviet sci-fi classic, recounts the expedition of a writer and professor led by a mysterious guide called "The Stalker." to a futuristic wasteland called "The Zone." Dripping with existential dread, it continually presents strange occurrences that will have us debating the meaning of what we've just viewed right through the ending.
*Stalker* (1979) can be streamed for free on HBOMax, the Criterion Channel or Kanopy. It's also available for rent on Amazon Prime and AppleTV. The Columbus Library has two copies on disc.
