This one-day workshop is a great introduction if you lack time or commitment to take a longer course. In this safe and friendly workshop, you will learn how to plan your work, where, and how to buy suitable wood for use in making simple projects at home. You will use the tools you will need to build a basic kit and the day includes a demonstration on keeping your tools sharp. Using easy-to-follow directions in this ‘hands-on’ practical day, you will learn how to measure and cut accurately, how to use a chisel to make a classic wood joint and how to use a plane to make your wood smooth. You will drill the holes to glue and screw your work together. Everyone works with a complete set of tools and makes their own project, under the guidance of an experienced tutor. During the day you will make two ‘gallows style’ brackets and attach them with wood-plugged screws to a 50cm shelf. This is fitted with simple hardware to hang and display your work. This workshop is suitable for all ages. Small class size = plenty of attention. For those aged between 10 and 18, an older guardian can accompany them on the course if required. Experienced tutor Ian McQueen will guide you through how to recognise all the parts of a machine, thread the bobbins, and sew neat rows of stitching on basic materials. How to read rulers and tape measures and cut fabric accurately. Make hems, seam allowances and French seams. We have various user-friendly machines for you to try which will help you choose if you are planning on purchasing one soon. Bring lots of questions and we will supply everything else. Our classes are small and each person has a machine to themselves for the day. This is an excellent confidence booster and a great primer for all of our project sewing courses.

We will show you how to use all the specialist tools to strip out and untack old upholstery and how to recover a simple modern chair seat to transform your tired furniture into raving beauties. One of the modules that professional upholsterers have been examined on is the process of making a modern ‘drop-in’ dining seat. You will learn about foam and how to select the correct density and compression rate. By building up foam and applying the additional layers of calico and polyester, everyone learns how to complete the project by tensioning top and bottoming fabric with confidence. In a professional upholstery company, the apprentice learns by making many drop in seats before being let loose on more complicated items. We begin the day by learning how to strip out old upholstery. You will to learn how to use traditional specialist hand tools to remove staples and tacks from upholstered furniture to prepare for replacing the upholstery. You don’t have to bring a drop in seat to the workshop, as we provide simple wood panels for you to cover and take home, but if you have a tatty covered stool, or dining chair drop in seat you would like to start work on, we would be happy to show you how to unpick the tacks or staples from it. It is always very enjoyable to see what ‘lies beneath’. It may not be possible to finish recovering your project during the one day workshop, but we will advise you on the next steps and you will gain confidence to tackle simple jobs by working on the wood panel we provide. At the end of the day, you will have a chance to learn how to web a frame using a hand web stretcher with magnetic hammer and tacks.

His teaching style promotes confidence and all of the courses are suitable for absolute beginners. **One-Day Travel Journal Workshop** In this one-day course, students will learn how to bind their own travel journal complete with pencil holder. All set to decorate one room… or perhaps your entire home? Brush up your decorating techniques by messing up our workshop, instead of your living room! Painting a room is a great way to transform your home interior, without it costing the earth. But it can be a daunting task and everyone wants to have that professional-looking finish. What’s the secret to decorating success? Preparation and practice. Our Prepare & Paint workshop is a very practical class. From clearing the space to cleaning up brushes, we will take you methodically through the whole process. We will guide you through the importance and process of preparation: How to fill gaps and blemishes to make the surfaces smooth and ready for paint. You will practice using different tools and materials, experiment with different qualities of brushes, and finally learn how to apply paint to where you want and not all over yourself. In the morning, each student will have a panel of ‘wall’ and woodwork to work on. You will learn how to select the correct tools and materials and prepare a room for painting, from cleaning the paintwork to filling small and large holes in the walls and woodwork. Learn what materials to use and how to apply the filler and how to sand the surfaces in preparation for painting. We will even show you how to prepare areas that have been damaged by water stains, flaky plaster, and lost areas of wood. In the afternoon, you will learn how to select the correct paint and judge the correct situation to use primer and undercoat and how to paint ceilings, walls, and woodwork. Get to grips with how to paint edge lines that are crisp and sharp. Delight in painting without drips or masking tape and learn how to select and care for a paintbrush. We will even show you how to clean a brush and a roller so that they will give you years of service.
