Thursday at the Portrait gallery
Come Craft with us. Don't let the lack of RSVPs stop you, they aren't required, nor is membership to our group. Bring your project and join a boisterous group of crafters in the Kogod Courtyard of the Smithsonian Portrait Gallery - American Art Museum. This glass roofed space is climate controlled and has the most beautiful light for crafting. (If there's an event in Courtyard head over to the MLK library Cafe.)
Building a Scanning Tunneling Microscope - Systems Testing
***In Person Location:*** Rockville Library, second floor meeting room (Collaboration Room 3).
We are experimenting with a new virtual join link - [https://meet.jit.si/mocomakers](https://meet.jit.si/mocomakers)
If you can make it in person, that's always recommended!
We want to continue with full systems testing, after the powerline component repair - and overall just 'get back into it'. Let's resume repeated full end-to-end testing cycles and continue to iterate our design and resolution.
Our community is building (and documenting for other teams) how to build a scanning tunneling microscope using a mix of common and 3D printed parts. This will allow us to scan and visualize a single atom - an ambitious we are doing over the course of a few months.
The MoCo Makers community is one of the most innovative and competent groups in Maryland, and we've done everything from [publishing cancer research](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38136356/), to [launching products](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/gotim/cozy-curvy-multi-contour-pillow), [winning grants](https://covidinfocommons.datascience.columbia.edu/awards/2014255), and inspiring thousands.
Now our biggest challenge yet has appeared. We are building a Scanning Tunneling Microscope, that will allow us to scan and visualize single atoms.
Does it sound hard? Perhaps.. However! I have every confidence that we are now operating at a level were we can take on this mean, cross-functional project. We continue to build on our past successes, and a key technology we previously applied was increasing the signal of small voltages using OpAmps - which we did during our custom pH Probe project - [https://www.mocomakers.com/ph-probe/](https://www.mocomakers.com/ph-probe/) \- That technology is exactly what we need to get this machine working\, and at a high precision\!
To get a better idea of what we are doing, see our reference project here: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7N3OqTEq08g](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7N3OqTEq08g)
All starting CAD, code, and reference files should exist. However, let's be the first Maker community to document the build process and share it with learners around the world.
We have a bit over $2,000 in materials costs, so if you want to sponsor this project, and get banners at events with 20K attendees, and access to our email broadcast of 30K members, please contact matt@mocomakers.com
We are also open to university, lab, or community partnerships so feel to reach out if you want to be part of this project.
Together, we can do incredible things.

Read & Reflect: A Social Reading Circle.
Shared Pages, Shared Insights.
š Do you love reading, but wish you had a structure and a community to share your insights with?
Join our small circle of curious minds (just 4 members per gathering) as we come together for an hour of focused readingāin the calm setting of a library or the cozy atmosphere of a cafĆ©.

Second part: We regroup and each person shares key takeaways, insights, or questions sparked by their reading. This sparks a structured yet free-flowing conversation around ideas, perspectives, and personal reflections.
Why join?
Add structure to your reading habit.
Discover new books, authors, and ideas through othersā choices.
Build real connections by sharing and listening deeply.
Socialize around something meaningful instead of small talk.

Saturday at the MLK library DC & Portrait Gallery
Come Craft with us at either the MLK Library or the Kogod atrium of the Portrait Gallery. There are generally knitters/crocheters/needle workers in both places. Our success has made us a fairly large group so we are meeting in both places on Saturdays. Don't let the lack of RSVPs stop you, they aren't required, nor is membership to our group. Bring your project and join a boisterous group of crafters in first floor of either building.
Virtual Yarn January 31st
Let's get together virtually!
We can chat, show off our current projects, and get some support from our fellow yarn addicts.
I have set up a Zoom meeting that anyone with a computer (phones count) with the free Zoom app can access. By Saturday, I will send a meeting ID to all attendees through meetup.
A Poetry Workshop
Hey Poetry Lovers!
This group is on a roll. Hereās the gist:
We meet at the **Capital One CafƩ in Chinatown** from **12pm - 2pm** every other week.
For enrichment, we start by reading and reflecting on a **āpublished poemā**, suggested by someone in the group. No advance preparation is necessary. But feel free to check out some of the poems weāve read [here](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vSyE_wCLQCPHRrKmN5F9tOIeeRQUZESxjRXGVBoCF2uU8Gm0_d0uECiCBCQXEy6ksxfsBOhtRIOpW3T/pubhtml?gid=0&single=true&widget=true&headers=false%22%3E%3C/iframe%3E). Or submit suggestions for future meetings [here](https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSexGc2Z2Kp6bZW0D3_hfJ7NUUkfNHf7TXX-43FglCeBd9EF2Q/viewform?usp=send_form).
Next, we **share our work and offer feedback**. Depending on attendance, everyone gets \~10 minutes to use as they like. (No need to share, though; youāre welcome to come even if you prefer just to listen.)
We maintain a **Discord server** to help share our work and communicate outside our bi-weekly meet-ups. If you havenāt used Discord before, take a moment to download it and create an account before arriving. When we meet you on Saturday, we will add you to our server, the āDC Poetry Workshopā, and can help you navigate the app if you have questions.
Finally, if you plan on sharing a poem, consider how you will do so. Some options include:
* Print 5-10 copies to distribute in person
* Take and share screenshots in the Discord chat.
* Copy the poem into a google doc, change sharing settings to āanyone with linkā, and copy the google doc link into the Discord chat.
Most importantly, weāre excited to meet you!
Catch you on Saturday,
Diego / Ian / Cayden / Nate / Otasha / Lia / An
