Sundays In The Park series
We meet on Sundays at 8 a.m. for training runs on some of DC's best trails, including Rock Creek Park and the surrounding area. We typically meet at either Peirce Mill in Rock Creek Park, or Roosevelt Island, depending on the route.
Details of the weekly schedule can be found here: https://new.vhtrc.org/runs/sip
We hope you can join us for a run! All paces and levels of trail experience are welcome for these runs, which range in distance from 6 to 9 miles.
Run and Get Dirty! Adult Dogs in the main park, puppies in the small dog park
Our regular Sunday meetup at the Shirlington Dog Park -- members start arriving around 10:15 a.m. You'll always find an Aussie to play with. There are 3 entrances, so wander the park -- the dogs will find each other!
For puppies, Shirlington has a small dog park within the larger dog park. It's the prefect place for your puppy to gain confidence and socialize with others. There is also plenty of room to run.
Just a reminder, the Dog Park is under attack by the Arlington County Board of Commissioners. While early plans to decrease the size of the park by 50% has been tabled, it's important to remind Arlington County how important this park is to dogs and owners. Here are links to the change.org petition and the Facebook page where you can get updates.

Trailhead/Carpool Hike: ***Cancelled***
***\*\*\* Due to the icy conditions and the Extreme Cold Warning, we have decided to cancel the hike \*\*\****
RESERVATIONS
Wanderbirds Hiking Club is a 501(c)(7) non-profit, and the public is invited on all hiking trips. Reservations are accepted as late as Saturday but reserving as early in the week as possible helps ensure your spot and prevent cancellation of the hike due to low sign-ups. RSVP through Meetup and pay through PayPal. Please be sure your RSVP gives your full name and phone number and where you'll be boarding the bus.
FIRST-TIME HIKERS
If you're a first-time hiker with us, please notify the leaders in advance so they can make sure you have the info you need. Hikers must be able to keep a 2-mph pace. New hikers are required to first complete a moderate hike.
**Liability Waiver:** Many of our hikes take place in remote wilderness areas where cell phone service is not available. Any person participating in any Club activity is responsible for their own safety, health and welfare, and must assume all risks and liabilities related to all Club activities. The Club, its hike leaders, hike sweeps, officers, and other representatives are not liable for any injuries, losses, or damage to persons, children, pets, and/or property, arising from any trips or activities of the Club. You are responsible for bringing enough water, food, and first aid supplies, including those for your personal medical conditions.
CANCELLATION POLICY
To cancel and receive a full bus hike refund, less a $5 processing fee, you must change your RSVP to "No" on Meetup **before NOON on the Friday** before the hike. If you change your RSVP after noon on the Friday before the hike, no refunds will be issued.
Cancellations to Metro/carpool/trailhead hikes will not issue a financial refund, but hiker must change their Meetup RSVP to NO so that leaders do not wait for them at the trailhead.
COVID PRECAUTIONS
Anyone experiencing symptoms of upper respiratory illness should not attend the event.

Play monopoly
Let's play monopoly in the open area called "The Landing" at the Crystal City Shops. The Landing is right at the Crystal City metro stop and, if you're driving, there is free parking [on weekdays after 4pm and weekends] in the garage. See below for more details. With many tables for games and nearby eateries in the mall, it is a fantastic location for playing board games.
We'll be starting at 3:00 pm, but feel free to wander in whenever you'd like. Please RSVP to play. If you'd like to start earlier, feel free to mention that in the comment section. If everyone is already in the middle of games when you arrive, please don't hesitate to pull up a chair and watch a game in progress. We will play a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 6 people at each table. This is a friendly group of competitive and non competitive players and our different backgrounds and different experiences of Monopoly make for interesting conversation during the games.
If you're taking the metro, exit at Crystal City and you can walk to The Landing without having to go outside. When you come up the first set of escalators, turn right to enter the underground shops and then turn right at Rite Aide. Continue straight and The Landing will be the large open seating area on your right, next to San Antonio Bar & Grill and Subway.
If you're driving, parking is free in the garage. Enter the garage for 1750 Crystal Drive on 18th Street and take a ticket. (You'll need this to exit, but there's no charge). Take the elevators up to Level S. The Landing is the large open seating area next to San Antonio Bar & Grill and Subway.
If that parking garage is full, exit the garage and turn left on 18th and left again on Crystal Drive. A second parking garage is located on Crystal Drive between 18th Street and 15th Street.
This is a link to a map of the Crystal City Shops: http://www.thecrystalcityshops.com/ The Landing is in the yellow section on the map near the San Antonio Bar & Grill and Subway.
Trek Around Old Town, Alexandria, VA (ODH Training Hike #5)
This is a substitute hike for the one originally scheduled for Indian Head Rail Trail on Saturday. The location was changed due to icy trail conditions at Indian Head and was rescheduled due to severe wind chills forecast for Saturday. The conditions for Sunday, Feb. 8 are better, though far from ideal. Winds will be from the northwest at about 15-25 miles per hour. The temperature will start out around 17 degrees Fahrenheit (about 2 degrees F wind chill) and gradually rise to about 22 degrees F (about 10 degrees F wind chill). Therefore, you must dress in multiple layers (avoiding pure cotton next to the skin), have winter head and ear coverings, and winter mittens or gloves. You’ll need to show these items to a leader before signing the waiver form and in order to participate. A winter scarf is also recommended to partially cover your face. The reason for layers is that the air between them provides extra insulation and you can remove some layers if needed to prevent overheating during exercise; the idea is to retain warmth with minimal sweating. Bring water and snacks as there will be no organized lunch stop. No pets please.
We’ll meet at the Braddock Road Metro station by 10:00 AM Sunday. We urge you to take Metro rather than driving because finding a legal parking spot is difficult. We should meet in the vicinity of bus bay E just outside the Metro station. To simplify registration, we’re waiving collection of donations for this event.
The route will be about 6 miles along city sidewalks and trails that have been sufficiently cleared of snow and ice, with very few exceptions. Two public restroom locations are available, one at about the 2.2-mile mark, and one at about the 4.9-mile mark, but there are a number of businesses along the way where you can use their restrooms if you buy something there. King Street Metro station is an optional bail-out point at 4.8 miles. The hike ends back at Braddock Road Metro.
Paper handouts of the route will be available at the start, so please change your RSVP if you decide not to attend.
Execution of a Sierra Club liability waiver is required at the start.
You need not be a Sierra Club member to participate, but if you'd like to join, go to: [http://www.sierraclub.org/virginia](http://www.sierraclub.org/virginia) .
Leaders: Gary Kosciusko, (703) 946-8111, and Vicky Hsu.
Although open to all, this hike is part of a series of Saturday training hikes leading up to the [One Day Hike](https://www.meetup.com/sierrapotomac/events/304791832/) (ODH)—a 100 or 50 km hike along the C&O Canal—on May. 2, 2026. Staunton River State Park - Sunset & Stargazing
BYO... well, lots of stuff. Our goal for this park visit is to relax. We'll perch along the banks of where the Dan and Staunton rivers meet, and enjoy our picnic dinners and sip warm drinks as we watch the sunset over the water, and then light fade into darkness. Then we'll spend some time sitting back and studying the night sky. There's so much more going on out there than we realize day to day. As a certified Dark Sky location, on a clear night, I'm told you can see the Milky Way.
Bring: Blanket/chair, warm drinks, dinner/snacks, a telescope, binoculars, astronomy apps, star maps and a sense of wonder.
