Let's go see Project Hail Mary together!
Let's go see Project Hail Mary together!
Let's all go see [Project Hail Mary](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m08TxIsFTRI) in cinema! It's a new epic sci-fi movie starting Ryan Gosling, from [Andy Weir's book](https://tpl.bibliocommons.com/v2/record/S234C3970025) of the same name. It's supposed to be incredible! UPDATED! We've chosen the 3:50pm showing on Saturday, March 28th, at Imagine Cinemas Market Square. We'll meet outside 20 minutes earlier to gather and chat, and then head in 5 minutes before show time to get seated. Apparently Imagine does not show many trailers, so we expect it to start promptly. It's a long movie, 2h 36 min, so we'll come out 6:25 or so. Afterwards you can also join us at a nearby bar (see below). IMPORTANT NOTE: you'll need to [BUY YOUR OWN TICKET](https://omniwebticketing6.com/imaginecinemas/marketsquare/?schdate=2026-03-28&perfix=119275). That link should take you to the Sat 28th 3:40 showing in Auditorium #3 at Imagine Cinemas Market Square, for Project Hail Mary. If it doesn't work, [navigate yourself](https://imaginecinemas.com/cinema/market-square/). Tickets are on sale NOW (a day earlier than expected!). Some of us have seats row C 6,7,8,9. Try to buy near there. Hopefully at least some of us will end up seated next to each other. You can coordinate in the comments if you want (post the seat you bought). Finally, afterwards optionally join us at a nearby bar: C'est What, 67 Front St E Downstairs, starting at 6:20pm or so, we'll chat about the movie and have our usual 'drink beers and shoot the shit about space' good time. You're also welcome to join just for that if you want, but fair warning, we will spoil the movie for you!

DETROIT: MUSIC OF THE MOTOR CITY Soulpepper Concert- - $85 up
Join us for "TDETROIT: MUSIC OF THE MOTOR CITY", a special, limited engagement concert series evening presented by the **[Soulpepper Theatre Company](http://www.soulpepper.ca/the_company/the_soulpepper_story.aspx)** in Toronto's historic Distillery District. Our group members will purchase seats online - to enjoy this special evening together. **The Concert**: **Experience the sound of Detroit's History** Detroit was once called, ‘The City of the Future.' It was built on the innovation of Henry Ford and later gutted by the collapse of the automotive industry. 20th century Detroit is more than the story of collapse and rebirth, it’s also a story of how those pressures created the music that captured the world's attention: ‘The Sound of Young America.' After a sold-out run in 2023 Soulpepper regulars Andrew Penner and Travis Knights, along with a group of incredible performers will return to the stage to tell the story of this city and its sound. Through the many genres that came out of Detroit (Motown, Jazz, Hip Hop and Detroit Rock to name a few) they'll dive deep into the city’s heart and history; from the assembly line to abandoned factories to the resilient sounds of today’s Detroit **About Soulpepper Theatre:** Soulpepper is considered to be one of the best small theatres in Toronto. It consistently offers professional, high-quality productions. It is also one of the priciest small theatres in the city. Please note a seat is not guaranteed for a rush ticket! Avengers’ Saturday Cafe for the Homeless
Note: You may be removed from the attendance list if you've participated in the previous week's event. This allows for more people to experience this Meetup. Avengers put your costumes on and let’s go and save the world!
Well we can’t save the world (yet), but we aim to try to play a small part in the lives of those experiencing homelessness by making their day a bit better!
Description: Before the event the organizer will post a list in the comment section of the attendees and what they are responsible to bring (food/drink, kitchen supplies, cleaning supplies). We normally ask each attending member to bring approximately $15-20 worth of ingredients/supplies to our event. We will use the items to prepare and serve food/drink at The Meeting Place.
Timeline: We will meet on location at 11:00 am, with lunch served between 12:30-1:00 pm.
Membership Dues: Membership dues are $2.00 for the calendar year. Membership dues go towards paying for food/supplies incurred by no-shows. Membership dues are due at the first meetup of the year that you attend.
No Shows/Late Un-RSVP: We’re relying on members who RSVP to bring key ingredients for recipes! Please try your best to show-up or alternatively change your RSVP early so another member may fill the empty spot.
\*\*\* If you are on the waitlist, keep checking as you may be moved into attendance to replace someone. We will try to message you to confirm your attendance in advance.
Donations will be assigned before the event.

Better Disagreement
Better Disagreement
**SUBSCRIBE TO [THE MAILING LIST](https://torontorationality.beehiiv.com/). EVENTS ARE NO LONGER POSTED HERE.** Arguing about important things doesn’t usually lead to people changing their mind. Double Crux is a technique for making discussions more productive and understanding the actual reasoning of those who disagree with us. Sometimes it even helps to better understand the foundations of your own beliefs. Together, we'll learn about [Double Crux](https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/ya59PtGeYnCG25eWn/double-crux-in-a-box), and then break into pairs with someone we disagree with to practice finding out why our views are different and what might change our minds. ## Location Enter the Mars Atrium via University Avenue entrance. We'll meet at the food court in the basement. I'll be wearing a bright neon yellow jacket. ## Detailed Directions to the Food Court Enter from University Avenue and walk east until you see escalators. Take the escalators down. The food court is to the east of the escalators. If you are lost/confused, ask a security guard to direct you to the food court. TFS Presents a Cary Grant / Irene Dunne Double Feature!
TFS Presents a Cary Grant / Irene Dunne Double Feature!
TFS is delighted to present a sparkling screwball double feature starring one of classic Hollywood’s great on-screen pairings. Cary Grant and Irene Dunne bring wit, elegance, and perfectly timed comic chaos to *My Favorite Wife* (1940) and *The Awful Truth* (1937) - two films that showcase why their chemistry remains so irresistible. Sharp dialogue, romantic mischief, and laugh-out-loud moments abound in this celebration of screwball comedy at its finest. Please note that this is a paid event. About the venue: The Pint Public House Nearest Subway: Union Station Map / Directions: https://maps.app.goo.gl/G5GfXDSQXeifJ5ot5 We make an effort to find pubs that are quiet and introvert friendly, with a section to ourselves. We make no effort to muffle our extroverts, but should they get out of hand, our resident INTJ will use their death stare, to pull them back in line.
A Room with a View by E.M. Forster
A Room with a View by E.M. Forster
For March, we'll read A Room with a View by E.M. Forster 240 pages First published in 1908 This Edwardian social comedy explores love and prim propriety among an eccentric cast of characters assembled in an Italian pensione and in a corner of Surrey, England. A charming young English woman, Lucy Honeychurch, faints into the arms of a fellow Britisher when she witnesses a murder in a Florentine piazza. Attracted to this man, George Emerson, who is entirely unsuitable and whose father just may be a Socialist. Lucy is soon at war with the snobbery of her class and her own conflicting desires. Back in England she is courted by a more acceptable, if stifling, suitor, and soon realizes she must make a startling decision that will decide the course of her future: she is forced to choose between convention and passion. The enduring delight of this tale of romantic intrigue is rooted in Forster's colorful characters, including outrageous spinsters, pompous clergymen and outspoken patriots.
[In-person] Curiosity Café: Laughing Matters – Humour in Our Lives
[In-person] Curiosity Café: Laughing Matters – Humour in Our Lives
We experience and produce humour through the memes we spread and the inside jokes we share with friends, and we even use it when facing life’s most difficult challenges. Humour can help us bond, cope, and rethink our assumptions. But what makes something funny? Why do humour and the laughter it produces play an important role in our culture? One answer is that humour can help break down barriers and bring people together. As Victor Borge once said, “Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.” Humour can also be used as a social instrument to call out misconduct. How is it that humour fosters community and division at the same time? At our next Curiosity Café, we’ll revisit the silly and serious sides of humour, and explore the role that humour plays in how we connect, think and live. Together, we’ll discuss questions like: * How does humour help break down barriers and bring people together? * Does humour have a unique ability to help us find common ground and strengthen relationships? * On the other hand, does how we respond to humour have implications for our social capital? * How might jokes or humour be perceived by people from different backgrounds? * Is it possible to create humour that’s both provocative and inclusive? * How might humour give us a sense of control? * What is or should be the role of comedy in society? Join us for a lively and collaborative conversation moderated by Erik Ai and Dylan Michels, where we’ll explore questions, new and old, and (hopefully) share plenty of laughs along the way. **Space is limited!** **Please obtain a “Pay-What-You-Can” ticket from Curiosity Café at [this link (click here)](https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/curiosity-cafe-revisited-no-laughing-matter-humour-in-our-lives-tickets-1985339500891) to attend this event. You need a ticket to be admitted.** See the above link for more info about tickets and other options including a limited number of free tickets. Come and hang out with us, grab food, and read through our handout from 6-6:30pm. Our structured discussion will run from 6:30-8:30pm with a 10 minute break in the middle. Hope to see you there! ***__________________________________________________________________*** This event is brought to you by [Being and Becoming](https://beingnbecoming.org/), a Toronto based non-profit. We aim to create community around exploring everyday concepts and experiences so that we may live more intentional, thoughtful, and meaningful lives. We use philosophy as a tool with which we can come to a richer understanding of the world around us. By offering activities, spaces, and other opportunities for conversation and co-exploration, we hope to enable the meeting and fusion of individuals and their ideas. Everyone is welcome, regardless of background: indeed, we believe the journey is best undertaken alongside explorers from a variety of disciplines, cultures, backgrounds, and experiences. Find out more about Being and Becoming [here](https://beingnbecoming.org/). About the Curiosity Café Series: For those of you who haven’t had the opportunity to join us at our Curiosity Cafés and are wondering what they’re all about: every two weeks, we invite members of our community to come out to the Madison Avenue Pub to engage in a collaborative exploration of our chosen topic. Through these events, we aim to build our community of people who like to think deeply about life’s big questions, and provide each other with some philosophical tools to dig deeper into whatever it is we are most curious about.

Humanist Program
Humanist Program
The Humanist Monthly Program is our longest running event and still a community favorite. In the old days it used to be called "Going to HCCO" and we still like to think of it as our flagship event. We will be hearing from Becca Powell, Director of Advocacy and Outreach at Unchained At Last, an organization whose mission is dedication to ending forced and child marriage in the United States through direct services and systems change. Unchained At Last's mission clearly meshes and addresses several of our Humanist Ten Commitments. Becca will educate us about an issue many of us may not be familiar with--but should be. Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk. Going forward our meetings will be hybrid.
