Made last year and lasting 126 mins is this critically acclaimed drama by Cedric Klapich starring Cecile de France. Four estranged cousins are united by the unexpected inheritance of a house in Normandy and discover much of their shared family history. The house has been largely unchanged since the 1940s and reveals much of the life of its owner and their ancestor Adele Vermillard who in her youth witnessed a period of profound change in French art and society. Through back and forth journeys from 1895 to 2025 and coming across such luminaries as Monet and Sarah Bernhardt these experiences go quite some way to shape all their futures. Fight Club is a 1999 American film directed by David Fincher and starring Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, and Helena Bonham Carter. It is based on the 1996 novel by Chuck Palahniuk. Norton plays the unnamed narrator, who is discontented with his white-collar job. He forms a "fight club" with a soap salesman, Tyler Durden (Pitt), and becomes embroiled with an impoverished but beguiling woman, Marla Singer (Bonham Carter). The film failed to meet the studio's expectations at the box office and polarized critics. It was ranked as one of the most controversial and talked-about films of the 1990s. However, Fight Club later found commercial success with its home video release, establishing it as a cult classic and causing media to revisit the film. The structure of Timecode is what makes it famous but even without that, it's an absorbing film about a group of people in and around the movie business in Hollywood. Mike Figgis (Leaving Las Vegas) directs an ensemble cast that includes but is not limited to Salma Hayek, Stellan Skarsgård, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Kyle MacLachlan, Saffron Burrows, Holly Hunter, Julian Sands and Leslie Mann. So, what about that structure? It's a one-shot, heavily improvised ensemble piece filmed with up to four handheld cameras, each eventually taking up a quarter of the screen as its characters interact with each other in real time. Each camera follows a character or characters, and you can track the events of the film on any of the split screens, but it doesn't become overwhelming because only one has sound at any one time. Trust me, it works! It's also a film that really benefits from the big screen, since you have plenty of space to see everything at once. This is a script read-through and pre-production meeting for our next project, DEAD RINGER. We will spend the first half of the evening reading through the script and the second assigning crew roles for the shoot. As I write, there are currently two characters yet to be cast as well, and the writer / director will be there on the night so you could well be talent-spotted.
