Silver Tuesdays Nordic Walking in Brockwell Park
Over the last nine years, Silverfit has been able to offer exercise to everyone over 50 in Brockwell Park. Together with Silverfit, I have done my best to keep the exercise fun for everyone, no matter if you are fit or not so fit, strong or not so strong, sporty or not so sporty. And, over all, I think we have done that pretty well! We have had some glorious years, and we made many, many friends over that time. Silverfit managed to keep it going through the good times and the hard Covid years, but unfortunately, the reality of the current economic climate is hitting Silverfit hard. Many councils and charities that have supported Silverfit over the years have stopped funding, and without funding, Silverfit just simply cannot keep going. Recently, they have had to take the hard decision to cut quite a number of their activities, and unfortunately, Nordic Walking in Brockwell park is one of the sessions that needs to be stopped. Yesterday afternoon was our last session for Silverfit. But…. I aim to keep your Tuesday walk going! So many of you love our Tuesday session, and it would just be too sad to stop completely. I would like to keep the Silver Tuesday session going under my own company, Fit and Happy Outdoors. Sadly, I cannot do this for free, as I do need to make a living. But in order to keep this session available for everyone, I plan to keep our Tuesday afternoon session at a highly reduced rate compared to my normal rates. New rates for our Silver Tuesday walks: 10 sessions for £45 (my normal rate is 10 sessions for £90). For those of you who struggle financially, I am happy to reduce this rate to £30, or even offer it for free. I can of course only do this if enough of you pay the normal rate, and I trust you will only ask for a reduction if you really need it. As I said, I do this for my living, but I don’t want money to be the reason you miss out on the benefits of Nordic Walking and spending time with our lovely group of friends. If you are already a member of Fit and Happy Outdoors and you pay monthly, then the Tuesday session is included in your fee. No extra payment is necessary (unless you’d like to sponsor someone who cannot pay) How does it work? 1) Please email me at Ailien at Fitandhappyoutdoors dot com, and let me know if you agree with me sending you an invoice for the full rate, or if you need a reduced rate. 2) I will then send you an invoice with my bank details on it. 3) Once I have received your payment in my bank account, I will hand you a 10-session card at the first session I see you 4) Every time you come walking on Tuesday, I will stamp your card 5) Once you have walked 10 times, I will send you a new invoice for the next 10. Payment: I really, really, prefer bank transfers. If you really do not do bank transfers, then you can pay me in cash. No cheques please (I really try to avoid having to go to the bank, it is just too much hassle). If you or a friend only comes once in a very blue moon, then they can pay £5 in cash for the session (only banknotes please. Help a girl out, I do enough weightlifting already 😊) Are you a walk leader? You are always welcome and do not have to pay me. I am grateful for your help! Event details coming soon! 🏃 This will be a run around Mayfair/Marylebone inspired by Apple Fitness+ Trainer Cory Wharton-Malcolm who (in a post on X shared by Joz) ran the same area making the form of the Apple logo outline on Strava. We'll be looking to do something similar but as a group running at a pace where we don't drop anyone (unless enough people turn up to split into groups). Please bring appropriate clothing and footwear, and note this may be for more experienced members of the community that are already able to run. We’d love to see first-timers! All attendees must follow our [code of conduct](https://nslondon.com/coc). Probably meet for 11am somewhere on route, then starting maybe 5/10 mins later. The run might take us an hour depending on how busy some areas are, for example Oxford Street (!) and we're not expecting any personal bests either. LCC RUNNERS: Thames Path Putney to Chiswick [4-5km] INTERMEDIATE
**Welcome back to LCC's Trail Running Club! For this one, we're making moves in a different direction with a mixed paved and trail run down the Thames Path from Putney to Chiswick.** **We'll be looking at a roughly 45-60 minute run, covering around 5 kilometres or thereabouts on flat surfaces, suitable for confident beginners and experienced runners alike.** Our route will take us from the anti-fascist International Brigades Memorial at the eastern end of Bishops Park, right next to Putney Bridge Tube Station. Details on the memorial and its location can be found here: https://www.londonremembers.com/memorials/hammersmith-and-fulham-international-brigade From there we'll run westward along the Thames Path along paved path and trails, finishing the running portion most likely at Dukes Meadows and cooling off with walking and stretching until we reach Chiswick Bridge, close to Chiswick station. Our standard bit of info about our running group and why it's good is provided below: \-\-\-\-\- Humans evolved to run and sprint; no wonder then that when we do it regularly (within moderation and with plenty of rest days), our brains as well as bodies thank us. Running has recently been shown to [improve neuroplasticity,](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6148340/) heal [brain damage](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6148340/) in affected individuals, and foster [better mental health](https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/wellness-and-prevention/the-truth-behind-runners-high-and-other-mental-benefits-of-running) including elevated mood at rest and enhanced task-switching ability. Doing all this in nature, as opposed to busy London roads dodging commuters and street cleaners, also helps deliver the well-known [benefits](https://mcpress.mayoclinic.org/mental-health/the-mental-health-benefits-of-nature-spending-time-outdoors-to-refresh-your-mind/) of time spent in nature to mood, anxiety levels, cognition and memory. All these things matter a great deal in an age where burnout and exhaustion are a constant presence either in our own lives or those of the people we care about [who you should totally invite along]. It matters especially for people trying to eke out a percentage of their time and mental capacity for transformative social and political organising: the better we feel, the more we'll be able to do. In a nutshell, running is great for you and you should do it. Trail running is even better. Best of all is doing all this with a supportive group of comrades, especially one which includes knowledgeable folks who can provide some structure to what can be a puzzling sport to get started with if building up to something, like a 10k or half marathon, is your goal. Part of our running group's programming will be building a series of events aimed at building people up, slowly but surely, towards specific goals, using progressive programmes similar to the [NHS's Couch to 5k](https://www.nhs.uk/better-health/get-active/get-running-with-couch-to-5k/) system. \-\-\-\-\- Take care and see you on the trails!

Come join me for the Mile End Parkrun. Its every Saturday at 9am in Mile End Park. Full disclosure: my fitness is terrible, although I am slowly getting better! We all know that exercise is important, but its just way more fun when we are all doing it together!! :-) Parkrun is totally free, and so is this meetup event. Let's aim to meet at 8.45am. And then afterwards, some of us may go to a nearby cafe for some breakfast or a coffee together. During the run itself, I expect we will get separated, as each of us will go at our own pace. Currently, this meetup event repeats every 2 weeks. But Parkrun is actually every Saturday. So if there is the interest, I am happy for this meetup to repeat on a weekly basis also.

Please join us for our weekly run and social - a great (free!) way to meet new people! We meet at 7pm outside The Horatia ( https://maps.app.goo.gl/p1QnyurFQh3gywov6) and go to Highbury Fields together from there. We run 5km at an easy pace (about 6-7 mins per km), often 3 loops around Highbury Fields but we do change up the route from time to time. After the run, we will head to the Horatia pub for some drinks

There's no better way to break up the week than with a run beside the river with a bunch of friendly people. So why not join us for our regular Wednesday evening meetup! Please sign up here or on our Strava page, which includes the route: https://www.strava.com/clubs/LondonSocialRunners We meet outside the National Theatre (NT) main entrance (river side), setting off at 7pm. Our route is a 7.5km (4.7 miles) loop around the river crossing Tower Bridge and finishing on Waterloo Bridge. Everyone runs their own pace and we welcome all levels of runners. We do ask that you are comfortable with this distance and are able to run at a pace of at least 6 min/km. After the run we go for a drink at The Understudy (KERB at the National Theatre). The NT have cloakrooms which we can use as a bag drop, though this can’t always be guaranteed as they sometimes have multiple performances on at the same time, and very occasionally none at all. If you find yourself unable to attend, out of courtesy to the host and other attendees, we ask that you update your RSVP so we know who will be joining us on the night!

There's no better way to start the weekend than with a run in the park with a bunch of friendly people. So join us for our regular Saturday meetup! TIME: 10am (please note we leave promptly) DISTANCE: 6.5k/4 miles START LOCATION: SW corner of Kensington Gardens, just inside the Kings Arms Gate (see pin on map below. program Royal Garden Hotel into google maps for directions). We welcome all levels of runners, so everyone runs at their own pace, taking between 30 and 50mins to run a complete anti-clockwise lap of Hyde Park. then we meet up at the end and walk together to Whole Foods Market on High Street Kensington for some well-earned coffee and brunch (or to grab treats for a picnic in the park if the weather's nice). **History** [Slate Run Metro Park](https://www.metroparks.net/parks-and-trails/slate-run/), located south of Canal Winchester in Pickaway County, has roots tracing back to the early planning efforts of the Columbus and Franklin County Metropolitan Park District. In 1963, Metro Parks officials identified the land along Slate Run as having strong potential for a large metropolitan park due to its expansive acreage, diverse habitats, and natural features like the stream that gave the area its name. The largest stream in the vicinity, Slate Run, flows south to northwest through a ridge, providing a logical basis for the park's designation. Between 1964 and 1968, Metro Parks acquired approximately 1,662 acres through multiple parcels, including a key 212-acre farmstead that had been continuously operated since 1805. This acquisition phase positioned Slate Run as a future major addition to the system, following the openings of other parks like Sharon Woods in 1968 and Highbanks in 1973. The park officially opened to the public in 1981, marking it as the sixth Metro Park in the district and, at the time, the largest with its substantial land holdings. From the outset, Metro Parks envisioned incorporating a living historical farm to educate visitors about 19th-century Ohio agriculture. The focal 212-acre parcel, purchased from the White family heirs in 1964, included historic structures that made it ideal for this purpose. The park's development preserved natural areas such as grasslands, wetlands, meadows, and forests while integrating interpretive elements. Upon opening, Slate Run quickly became a popular destination for nature enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Central to the park's identity is the Slate Run Living Historical Farm, which interprets life on a typical Ohio farm in the 1880s. The gothic revival farmhouse on the site was constructed in 1856 by owner Isaac Fridley and later restored by Metro Parks for historical accuracy. Visitors can explore interiors like the living room, parlor, and kitchen, where interpreters demonstrate period activities. The multi-bay barn, built in 1881 by Samuel Oman (the fourth owner), was meticulously restored with help from Amish carpenters. Heirloom animals such as Percheron horses, pigs, geese, and turkeys inhabit the farm, enhancing the immersive experience. The historical farmstead reflects a long lineage of ownership and agricultural use dating back to the early 19th century. Continuous farming on the land since 1805 made the site authentic for recreating late-19th-century practices, including grain harvesting and animal husbandry. Metro Parks focused on authenticity by restoring original buildings and introducing period-appropriate methods, such as horse-powered threshing machines from the late 1880s. The farm operates with volunteers and staff in period attire to portray daily rural life. This educational component has drawn school groups and families for decades. Today, Slate Run Metro Park spans about 1,705 acres and attracts roughly 250,000 visitors annually for its blend of natural preservation and historical interpretation. The park maintains diverse habitats supporting wildlife like nesting sandhill cranes and reintroduced northern bobwhite quail. Trails and open spaces offer opportunities for hiking and observation amid the preserved landscapes. The Living Historical Farm remains a crown jewel, continuing to teach about Ohio's agricultural heritage. This will be around 4.5 to 5 miles. While Slate Run is moderately strenuous in a few places, it's generally a good place to hike and doesn't seem to wear people out. Some spots on the hike are unshaded, though, so be prepared for the possibility of some sun. I find Slate Run to be very underappreciated for the quality of its hiking. **Where We'll Meet** We'll meet at the [Shady Grove Picnic Area](https://www.google.com/maps/place/39%C2%B045'30.1%22N+82%C2%B050'13.2%22W/@39.758347,-82.83701,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m4!3m3!8m2!3d39.758347!4d-82.83701?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI2MDIxMS4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D). You can use the map pin I've provided here; it's accurate. There's a latrine at Shady Grove, but there is no running water (no water fountains). We will pass a water fountain when we get to the Buzzard's Roost Picnic Area, although I can't guarantee this fountain won't be off for the winter. I'd recommend bringing some water just in case, at least for after the hike. So this month's prompt is more general. I think we can all agree that we are living in "unique" times that require coping skills. I think that one role and/or purpose of philosophy is to help us deal with our daily lives and our "unique" times. So, let's share our feelings and thoughts about which philosopher/philosophy we turn to in order to deal with our crazy events. Who/what helps you stay focused in your daily life and helps you sleep at night. I find that Stoicism with a little philosophical pessimism mixed in goes a long way in helping me deal with what I see as very destructive, fearful and mean spirited public policies at both the state and federal levels.
