A Sci Fi/Fantasy Querying Workshop
Join us in the upstairs room of Craft Beer Co Brixton for our next practical workshop, focused entirely on **the querying process**.
Querying can be one of the most intimidating parts of the writing journey, so, **in this interactive session, we’ll walk through the full process step by step,** from researching agents and preparing your query package to sending queries, handling responses, and understanding what happens if you receive an offer of representation.
We’ll cover:
* How to research and choose the right agents
* What makes a strong query package (query letter, synopsis, sample pages)
* How querying works in practice, including requests, rejections, and offers
* What to expect once you sign with an agent and go on submission
**The workshop will include discussion and a hands-on exercise**, with the opportunity to draft or refine a pitch and get feedback from the group.
This session is **open to writers at any stage**, whether you’re planning ahead, actively querying, or just curious about how the process works.
**This session will be led by one of our own members, Karin Robinson! Karin is an agented author of science fiction and fantasy, with one novel currently on submission and another going out to editors shortly.** She was a semi-finalist in the Spring 2025 Writers of the Future award and was shortlisted in the 2024 I Am In Print novel prize for Science Fiction and Fantasy. Her short fiction has been published in 100 Foot Crow, Trembling With Fear, Sci Fi Lampoon (forthcoming issue) and in the anthology Lesbians in Space 2: Sapphics Strike Back. She lives in London with her husband, daughter and two very spoiled cats.
Blood on the Clocktower @OtterChaos
Join OverBoard to play the brilliant social deduction game Blood on the Clocktower in person at the incredible board game cafe Otter Chaos in Brixton.
This session will be geared towards players that have more experience with the game (to give the opportunity to play more advanced scripts) but we will always find ways to accommodate you if you are new to the game.
Please note that a gaming cover charge of \~£5 will be payable by each attendee to the venue so that we can make use of the space. We also encourage you to buy food and drink from the bar so we are supporting the business (I can highly recommend their pizzas!)
If you want to know more about the rules of the game check out this video:

✨CHANGE OF SERIES: The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie 🗡️🔥😈
**[The Blade Itself](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/944073.The_Blade_Itself) (The First Law #1) by Joe Abercrombie**
515 pages
Genre: Fantasy • Grimdark • Epic Fantasy
**Summary:**
In a world where heroes are rare and survival often means getting your hands dirty, *The Blade Itself* throws us headfirst into the brutal reality behind epic fantasy.
We follow a cast of unforgettable characters: a crippled torturer who hates his job, a barbarian trying (and mostly failing) to be a better man, a vain nobleman desperate to prove he’s more than a pretty face, and a dangerously clever wizard with plans far bigger than anyone suspects.
Joe Abercrombie flips traditional fantasy on its head—this is a story where victories are costly, morality is murky, and violence has consequences. Sharp dialogue, dark humor, and morally grey characters drive a gripping introduction to a world teetering on the edge of war. This isn’t about chosen ones—it’s about what people are willing to become when the blade is already drawn.

**Join the Sci-Fi/Fantasy Series Squad! ️**
If you’ve ever wanted to start a fantasy series but didn’t want to go it alone, this is your crew. We read one book a month together—enough time to savor the story, debate the characters, and unpack the twists without the stress.
***
**How It Works:**
**Series Focus:** We’re starting a brand-new journey with *The First Law* trilogy. This month’s read is *The Blade Itself*, Book 1 of Joe Abercrombie’s gritty fantasy saga. New world, new characters, fresh start.
**No Pressure Zone:** Didn’t finish the book? No worries. Join us anyway—we’ll dive into themes, character arcs, favorite lines, shocking moments, and whether this is a series worth continuing together.
***
**Join us at the Dog in Croydon on the 25th of February 2026 at 7:00 PM**
Grab a drink, sharpen your wits, and step into a world where magic is dangerous, heroes are flawed, and the line between good and evil is anything but clear.

Welcome to the **Unreal Engine Workshop!** In each session we'll tackle essential game design discussions, then transition into hands-on project creation. Participants will build and expand their skills continuously as we explore every aspect of game development. From basic blueprints and interactive mechanics, to advanced rigging, animation, environment design, and lighting, we'll work our way up to creating small complete games. We encourage experimentation and peer teaching, so whether you're a beginner or experienced developer looking to deepen your expertise, our sessions provide a supportive environment to learn, create, and innovate together in Unreal Engine 5.
SOLD OUT • TEiP DEEP: A small group, deep dive into a single Thought Experiment
A **smaller, quieter, and less rushed** edition of THOUGHT EXPERIMENTS IN PUBS.
At TEiP DEEP, we have the chance to spend a whole hour and a half on **one thought experiment**, exploring different perspectives, coming up with new questions, listening and learning from one another.
**How it works:**
\- We split into small groups for each chapter of the thought experiment \(3\-4\)\.
\- We shuffle every 25 mins to meet new people and change things up\.
\- And at the end we'll have a brief group reflection\, sharing ideas and insights \- this will be lightly facilitated to ensure that everyone has a chance to speak if they want to \(no pressure\)\.
Some simple ground rules to keep our conversation the best it can be:
* respect for one another’s perspectives, beliefs, time (etc.)
* confidentiality of personal stories
* own your perspective
* you don’t have to talk if you don’t want to.
Our aim is the same as our bigger Thought Experiments in Pubs meetups: **a chance to meet and talk at about meaningful, thought provoking things**.
Although we’ll be going a bit ‘deeper’, we’ll keep the intention to have an enjoyable evening, with good humour and fun.
Places are limited to 15-20 people and tickets are £5.
Please update your RSVP if you can no longer attend so that someone else can have your place.
**Who should come:**
Everyone! We believe that the more perspectives, the richer the conversation. This group is not about being experts in Philosophy, it is about *doing* philosophy. That is, bringing our various life experiences and lenses on the world to group discussions about the human experience, the nature of reality...etc. etc....
**Where we'll meet:**
The Fitzroy Tavern in Fitzrovia. The nearest Tube stations are Goodge Street and Tottenham Court Road.
Looking forward to meeting & talking with you :-)

🚀Explore The Night Sky + Post Pub Drinks🔭(Subject to Weather)🪐
Ever look up and marvel with insatiable curiosity at both the beauty and wonder of the **universe?** That wild sobering thought that somewhere in the chaos of creation - the emergence of life - the universe became **conscious** enough to look back and ask the existential questions; How it all started, our evolution and place in it, and where else in the cosmos other complex life might exist (we know almost every star you see has planets orbiting with up to **20 billion habitable exoplanets** easily in our galaxy alone!)?
Then RSVP to view the potential life harbouring moons of **Jupiter**, comets, the famous **Orion Nebula** where stars like our sun were born, the majestic rings of **Saturn**, the international space station, well known star fields, remnants of **supernova** witnessed by our early ancestors, multi-star solar systems (think the double sun in Starwars), the Tau Ceti star with **2 Earth like planets** orbiting in the habitable zone, plus a range of other fascinating celestial wonderments (comets, galaxies) over drinks and engaging chats and banter this Jan fully hosted by a passionate amateur astronomer and former global Journalist covering big picture stories including cutting edge science related ones.
In between observing - we'll have **drinks and engaging chats** on all astronomy related topics for those inclined - space exploration, Fermi Paradox, Astrobiology, Cosmology, paleontology, SETI/Drake Equation (I have my own augmented version giving more realistic estimates of likely alien civilisations!), exoplanetology etc as well as non space chatter and banter too. No doubt we'll hear the usual jokes we've all heard before! If those don't make you laugh, my impersonation of Los Angeles ET will!
And to help set the mood and make the night feel even extra galactic, I’ll put my DJ hat to play some space‑themed tunes and songs about the stars!
**======= Joining Astronomers Group & Telescopes =======**
I'm able to take a limited number of people (please only RSVP if you can make it) to join my friendly informal relaxed London amateur astronomers' club that have been for over a decade with their regulars made up of up to about 150 people. As there will be people attending from this private Astronomers group as well as others from one of my other groups - the total attendees will be far higher than rsvps here and the public liability insurance only covers a max number of people - hence I need to impose strict limits on attendance.
Over the years we have enjoyed numerous social evenings of stargazing and thought provoking chatter with people of all ages and varying levels of astronomy knowledge - so complete beginners that are genuinely curious about the universe are very welcome. If you are just looking to meet generic randoms then there are others groups that will better cater for that. The world renowed **BBC Television Sky at Night** also attended our events pre covid and interviewed some of us for it's show that aired on BBC1 in Feb 2019. BBC **Radio London** (94.9 FM / digital) were there Aug 2023 to cover our meteor shower event broadcasting live to millions of Londoners for 3 hours
You don't need a telescope as you will be able to view through scopes belonging to me and other club members (as long as you behave responsibly and don't temper with expensive equipment). If you have your own telescope/binoculars feel free to bring along and I can help you setting it up if you're a newbie
**==== Food & Drinks With Seating From Warm Indoor Cafe ====**
Alcoholic beverages (wine, beer, cider only), hot drinks and food/snacks will be available to purchase from an indoor cafe at the observation point which Regent's park keep open exclusively for the astronomers group so please don't bring your own drinks
**==== ITINERARY =====**
We will meet outside Camden Station. After a short wait for anyone delayed, I will escort everyone to our observation point in the local park 15 minutes walk away and brief you in terms of what to expect, observing etiquette, tips, equipment handling and take any questions you have - weather general or astronomy/cosmology related.
**After Drinks:** Unless I have a very important 9AM Thursday deadline for a client presentation or something that I'm still gonna be writing 2 mins before start - most of us usually head our way back to Camden for another drink. If so - I will annouce the pub when we leave the park
**==== What Can You Expect To See (this time of year)? ====**
* Orion Nebula
* Jupiter and 4 moons
* Meteors
* Andromedia Galaxy
* Saturn, rings & moon
* Star clusters such as the Pleiades & Owl Cluster etc
* International Space station fly by
* Venus & Mercury
* Binary & tripple star systems (think planet *Tatooine in* Starwars!),
* Neptune
* Uranuus
* Mars
* Our moon
* A look towards the galactic centre where that supermassive £22b Labour black hole sits (Sagittarius A)

The Unknown: Spirit, Chaos & Creative Writing + Food, Drinks & a FREE Book!
## [You're welcome to book your space directly via our website, here: https://www.writeandpint.com/events/the-unknown-spirit-chaos-and-creative-writing-food-drink-handouts-a-pub-quiz]
...
## Hello there!
So, what do we mean when we say *spirit*?
Is there meaning in the universe, or only stories we like to tell ourselves?
Does God exist, or not, and what happens when certainty collapses?
What do we do with chaos, doubt, nihilism, mystery, and the things we can't know for certain?
This Write & Pint workshop invites you into **The Unknown**: the vast, unsettled territory where existential questions, spiritual longing, disbelief, myth, and imagination meet. Not to resolve these questions, but to **live inside them**, to test language against the ineffable, and create.
Together, we’ll be touching on themes like:
* Meaning, being, and time
* God (or not), belief, disbelief, and doubt
* Spirit (across traditions: Abrahamic, Buddhist, Taoist, mystical, and esoteric)
* Chaos, nihilism, and creative destruction
* Mystical atheism and radical unknowing
* Conspiracy, esoterica, spaghetti monsters, little green men, and the stories we invent to survive/make sense
This is, of course, a **creative writing day**, designed to help you generate new fiction and/or poetry through guided prompts and shared enquiry.
## What we’ll read
Across the day, we’ll draw from a wide range of writers, poets, mystics, philosophers, and mythic traditions. These will be **short excerpts, fragments, and quotations** used as sparks for writing, not as material to analyse in depth. So, there will be **plenty of time to write**. The readings exist only to open doors.
Texts may include brief passages or quoted lines from:
### Fiction, Philosophy & Cultural Thought
* **Fyodor Dostoevsky**
* **Sergey Nechaev** (via *The Master of Petersburg*)
* **Albert Camus**
* **J. M. Coetzee**
* **Jacques Derrida**
* **Simone Weil**
* **Clarice Lispector**
* **Anne Carson**
* **Louise Glück**
### Mystical & Non-Western Traditions
* **Rabia al-Adawiyya**
* **Hafiz**
* **Rumi**
* **Kabir**
* **Mirabai**
* **Ryokan**
* **Han Shan**
* **Chögyam Trungpa**
* Selections from the **Tao Te Ching**
### Folklore & Myth
* **Amos Tutuola**
* **Birago Diop**
These voices allow us to move beyond certainty, beyond Western rationalism, beyond fixed belief, and into paradox, absence, longing, humour, terror, devotion, doubt, and not-knowing.
## What we’ll write
You’ll be guided through a series of **creative writing exercises and prompts** designed to help you write fiction and/or poetry around *The Unknown*, whatever that means to you.
There is **no pressure to share**, though you’ll be warmly invited to if you wish.
As always, our intention is to gather **likeminded, creative, enquiring, compassionate people**, writers, readers, thinkers, believers, atheists, doubters, and question-askers alike.
## Schedule
**11:00am**
Arrive, order your tea or coffee, settle in, meet some friendly faces.
**11:00–11:30am**
Introductory writing exercises to familiarise ourselves with words, images, feelings, and intuitions around *The Unknown*.
**11:30am–1:00pm**
Short readings and quotations paired with creative writing prompts.
**1:00pm**
Lunch break: a Finch’s pub brunch.
**2:00–4:00pm**
More writing, more prompts, more exploration. You’ll leave with new material to take home, edit, and keep.
**4:00–5:00pm** **The Write & Pint Pub Quiz**
A fun, light-hearted general knowledge quiz covering culture, films, literature, history, and society, a playful way to end the day together.
...
If you have any question at all, about this full day workshop or any of our other events, you're very welcome to text or WhatsApp me on +44 (0) 7534 981 636.
Cheers!
Sean (A Write & a Pint).

Thursday Tabletop Games at Premiere Cinemas
It's **Thursday** & our main night of the week & the fun & games are just getting started here at DWL!

* **Tuesdays & Thursdays**: From 17:30 to 22:00.

And we're still running every Monday 6pm to 11pm at the Golden Lion Pub too.

Supporting Premiere Cinema by buying their food & drink IS supporting Dicing With Life! The cinema has been very generous to us by bringing us into their space & our way of showing our gratitude is by sending some business their way.
And their menu is surprisingly cheap! Especially compared to any other cinema.
Here's some cool examples of some great **offers**:
Buy a large **Popcorn** (it's a huge bucket!) or a large **fizzy drink** & it'll initially cost you £4, BUT, take your bucket or cup back to the bar for a **refill** & the cinema will refill it back up to the top for just £2!
That's half price Popcorn & Pop!
This also applies to **Ice Blasts** too (£5 initially but to refill it's just £3).
There's also Hot Dogs, Nachos, Pick n Mix & many other treats in store too! Check out their menu
If you have any questions, please ask & let the fun commence!

Il Sorpasso (The Easy Life)
A classic Italian road comedy that was so good the film ministry recognized it as "culturally significant." Starring Vittorio Gassman and Jean-Louis Trintignant, the film shows that for young men in love the rules of the road are only suggestions. And the rules for love? Hey, this is an Italian picture! Oh to be young and filled with joie de vivre or la dolce vita.
A french/italian fun filled movie with a surprising twist at the end.
Do you have a fun memory from your youth?
Location TBD, but it will be in person for sure!
