Care for the Working Class: The Political Economy of Care Work
Flora Tristan, the first European writer to connect socialism and feminism, has long been neglected as a systematic thinker. This talk reads her The Workers’ Union and other writings through the lens of a political economy of care. It argues that Tristan takes the need for care work in the family seriously, while also calling for institutional care for the young, sick, and elderly. While her gendered views from the early 19th century assume that much of this care work, especially in families, would be done by women, the systematic core of her arguments can be separated from these historical layers. Ultimately, Tristan provides a political economy perspective in which economic and political rights are closely interwoven, but in which unpaid care work, in the family and beyond, is always part of the picture.

This is a talk with audience Q&A presented by the University of Toronto's Centre for Ethics that is free to attend and open to the public. The talk will also be streamed online with live chat here [to be posted].
About the Centre for Ethics (http://ethics.utoronto.ca):
The Centre for Ethics is an interdisciplinary centre aimed at advancing research and teaching in the field of ethics, broadly defined. The Centre seeks to bring together the theoretical and practical knowledge of diverse scholars, students, public servants and social leaders in order to increase understanding of the ethical dimensions of individual, social, and political life.
In pursuit of its interdisciplinary mission, the Centre fosters lines of inquiry such as (1) foundations of ethics, which encompasses the history of ethics and core concepts in the philosophical study of ethics; (2) ethics in action, which relates theory to practice in key domains of social life, including bioethics, business ethics, and ethics in the public sphere; and (3) ethics in translation, which draws upon the rich multiculturalism of the City of Toronto and addresses the ethics of multicultural societies, ethical discourse across religious and cultural boundaries, and the ethics of international society.

SCARBOROUGH - Practical Philosophy 🇨🇦
**🏛️ WHAT'S PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY ABOUT?**
Practical Philosophy is a weekly meet-up that brings critical thinkers together for an opportunity to dive deep on a topic, practice communicating, and building a community. All with no ‘official’ philosophy knowledge required! 😎
Practical Philosophy is based on the idea that philosophy should be accessible to all, and not something reserved only for academics. Each week we choose a topic, and the goal is to use the conversation to develop our critical thinking and communication as we explore that topic.
The goal is to help develop our Critical Thinking, Communication, and Community 🙌
**📓 HOW DOES IT WORK?**
Each week, we pick one topic and discuss it. The topic for the week is shared, generally in the [Whatsapp group](https://tally.so/r/ZjaPO0), along with jump-off points to get the conversation going.
When groups get bigger than 7-8 people, it’s important that we break into smaller groups. This way we are able to maintain a conversational flow as opposed to having our meetups feel like a discourse or lecture.
**General Meeting Agenda**
Each Practical Philosophy meet-up follows this general timeline:
* 19:00-19:15 - People arrive and chat, get to know each other before the ‘official' start.
* 19:15-19:25 - Meeting introduction, explanation of Practical Philosophy and the topic for the week, read the guidelines and the overview so attendees know what to expect in terms of timelines.
* 19:25-20:45 - Break into small groups - introduce yourselves and general thoughts on the topic, open discussion afterwards. At this point the group can review the ‘jump-off’ questions as needed, but they are just there to help guide the conversation. It’s not obligatory to answer them.
* 20:45-21:00 - Bring everyone back together to discuss conclusions of the topic - each group gives a short 1-minute summary. Organizer concludes the meeting and everyone takes a group photo.
* 21:00 - The official meeting is over but it’s a great opportunity to get to know people in a non-structured environment, so we often stick around, chat, and get to know each other.
**🧧PRICING?**
Practical Philosophy is operated entirely on voluntary donations! If we are meeting in a café, buy a beverage! Donations are 100% voluntary, but they help us to bring the gift of deep conversation to people around the world. 💛 **WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY**
🗣 “I feel like Philosophy Club helps someone build their own belief system through a series of perspectives while not promoting what’s right and wrong” - Ekam
🗣 “I got hooked from day 1 (the topic was authority) and felt it was the right place for me. I feel it is a place where people can go to learn and discuss new perspectives and increase critical thinking and community by interacting with people who might challenge your point of views but at the same time encourage you to have openness and mind flexibility.” - Daniel
**🤓 FAQ**
* What will we talk about? What's the topic?
The topic for the week is shared every Sunday in the Whatsapp group. We try to add the topic to the comment section on this event page as well but if you don’t see it, the topic and the jump-off points will be in our [Whatsapp](https://tally.so/r/ZjaPO0).
* Do I need to study or read anything to attend?
No preparation is necessary. This isn’t a study of other thinkers. We want to know what YOU think about the topic, not what an old philosopher thought. If you have a perspective from a religion or a school of thought to share, throw it on the table and we’ll discuss it, but it's not required.
* Is there a specific philosophy that Practical Philosophy is focused on?
The goal of our meet-ups is to not have dogmatic discussions, and flex our critical thinking muscles. Because of this, we want to hear from every realm of thought, and don't study a particular school.
* Is it mostly men that attend?
Surprisingly, no! Although philosophy is seen as a Candelabra affair in a dark room with a bunch of guys, our Practical Philosophy meetups are generally 50/50 between genders, and we don’t meet in any dark rooms.
* Can I come alone?
Of course you can, we encourage it :)
* Can I be late?
Please don't be! We do have a 15 minute grace period where we allow people to funnel in while we hang out, but after that if you arrive too late, it disrupts the flow of the conversation.
* Where do you meet?
The location is posted in Meetup and our [Whatsapp](https://tally.so/r/ZjaPO0) group for this location. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you join the Whatsapp group! If you want to know what other cities have a Practical Philosophy Club, you can see our chapters on our [website](https://www.practicalphilosophy.club/practical-philosophy-locations/).
🤝**POLICY**
To respect our members privacy, we ask that no one privately message a member without first getting explicit consent. (This looks like speaking in person and being asked to message privately.) TIAMAT - Transformation through Play (Training / Tier 1 / Toronto)
FIRST TIME IN TORONTO AND SPACE IS LIMITED!
## Some experiences create a **before and after.** This is one of them.
There are workshops. And then there are experiences that truly give you the chance to **reorganize how you see yourself, your work, and the people around you** — that create a genuine fork in the road. TIAMAT is the latter. It has done this for performers, clinicians, seekers, and skeptics across four continents. Now, for the first time, it is coming to Toronto.
This is not a weekend of concepts and takeaways. It is a **full-body encounter with a framework** built at the intersection of cognitive science, philosophy, contemplative practice, and embodied performance — designed specifically to transfer. What shifts in the room follows you home.
We are in a moment of profound disconnection — from purpose, from one another, from a sense that our lives cohere. Most offerings gesture at this problem. **TIAMAT does something about it.** It gives you a living, rigorous, embodied practice for navigating the world differently — and access to a community of people taking that seriously alongside you.
Awaken to Meaning is proud to bring this to Toronto for the first time. **This is a rare opportunity**, and seats are limited.
**Two audiences. One experience.**
Whether you come as a practitioner or as someone who knows something is missing, TIAMAT meets you there.
**Clinicians, Coaches & Therapists:** Sharpen your sense of transference and countertransference in real-time / develop a more robust lens for where clients get stuck - somatically and relationally / expand capacity to track body, affect and relational field simultaneously / deepen self-awareness as your primary clinical instrument / gain a shared language you can bring directly into practice
**Seekers, Builders & The Curious:** A framework that bridges cognitive science, philosophy and lived practice / Real agency over how you think, feel and act - through skill, not willpower / Entry into a fellowship taking the meaning crisis seriously / A language for your inner life that holds under pressure / Transformation that doesn't fade by Monday morning
## **TIAMAT has travelled. Now it visits a new place.**
## Before Toronto, TIAMAT has been delivered across **four continents** – to performers, clinicians, researchers, educators, and people who simply knew something was missing. Each cohort has shaped the practice.

Sunday, May 24 • 10 AM - 4 PM
**Overview**
An embodied experience of laughter, breath, movement, and vocal sound play - where voice and expression are felt - not performed.
**Remembering Who We Are: A Day of Radical Joy through Laughter Yoga & Vocal Sound Play**
Join us **in person** for an uplifting and interactive experience - a **one-time** unique intertwining of the expertise from two well-seasoned workshop facilitators: Lynn Himmelman, Champion of Laughter & Play and Ann-Marie Boudreau, Vocal Sound Play Specialist Extraordinaire!
**“Before the world told you who you should be, who were you?”**
Most of us have spent years perfecting a "mask"—a version of ourselves that is quiet, composed, and compliant. But behind that mask lies a version of you that is ***loud, rhythmic, and wildly alive.***
In a world that often asks us to "dampen down" our inner spark to fit into boxes and meet societal expectations, it’s easy to lose the melody of our own spirit.
***This workshop is an invitation to strip away the "shoulds" and step back into the vibrant, uninhibited version of yourself.***
This full-day intensive is ***a sanctuary for the unmasked version of you to come out and play***.
By weaving together the breathwork of **Laughter Yoga** with the resonance of **Vocal Sound Play**, we create a safe container to dissolve the "cloak" of adulthood and remember our original state: ***pure, uninhibited connection.***
**What to Expect**
This isn't a choir rehearsal or a gym class—it’s a journey of reconnection. We use movement, rhythm, and sound to bypass the analytical mind and tap into the wisdom of the body.
* **Laughter Yoga:** We utilize intentional laughter as a form of exercise. No jokes are required! Through playful movement and eye contact, "fake" laughter quickly transforms into the genuine, contagious, belly-aching variety.
* **Vocal Sound Play:** We move beyond lyrics and "good singing" to explore the raw power of the voice. Through toning, chanting, and melodic improvisation, we release stored tension and reclaim our unique frequency.
* **Childlike Play:** We revisit the freedom of childhood - before life lured you into a box of limitations - to rediscover a sense of wonder and curiosity.
**The Journey Back to "You"**
The goal of this workshop is a profound **"Remembering."** Together, we will:
1. **Shed the Armor:** Use movement to shake off the weight of societal expectations.
2. **Open the Heart:** Use laughter to break down emotional barriers and foster deep connection.
3. **Find Your Frequency:** Use vocal play to express the truths that words often fail to capture.
4. **Reclaim Play:** Remember that joy is your birthright, not a luxury.
***"Laughter is the shortest distance between two people, and song is the bridge between the human and the divine."***
**Who This Is For**
**This space is for those who feel:**
* A longing to express more fully, but something holds them back
* A sense that their voice—literal or metaphorical—has been muted
* A desire to reconnect with joy in a way that feels real, not forced
You do not need to be "funny," and you certainly do not need to be a "singer." You only need a willingness to listen inwardly…and allow something to shift.
If you have a heartbeat and a voice you are perfectly qualified to attend. Come as you are . . . and leave as who you ***really*** are.
**What You Will Reclaim**
* **The Freedom to Play:** Reconnect with your "Inner Child"- the one who laughed without a punchline and sang without a stage.
* **Somatic Release:** Use the combination of sound and laughter to flush cortisol out of your system and replace it with a "cocktail" of endorphins and oxytocin.
* **Vocal Empowerment:** Stop "dampening down" your soul. Learn to take up space with your breath and your sound.
* **Heart-Centered Connection:** Experience the profound bond that forms when a group of people drops their guards and meets in a space of shared vulnerability.
**What You Will Leave With**
Not just an experience - but a felt sense you can return to.
* The memory of your unfiltered voice
* A body that knows how to release, not just hold on
* A deeper trust in your natural expression
And perhaps most importantly:
**the recognition that what you’ve been seeking…**
**has been within you the entire time.**
**Facilitators' Note**
*This is a "no-talent" zone. You don’t need a singing voice, and you don’t need to be in a good mood. We don't use jokes; we use the body. All you need is the desire to be seen and heard in your most authentic form. This workshop provides you with the “How”.*
**Participant Checklist**
* **Comfortable Clothing:** Wear something you can move, dance, and lie down in. Dress in layers to accommodate periods of heating up and cooling down.
* **Relaxation Props:** Bring a yoga mat, 1-2 pillows for under your neck and knees, a blanket or towel to cover yourself
* **An Open Mind:** Leave the "adult" at the door; they can pick you up at 5:00 PM.
* **Water Bottle:** Laughter and toning are thirsty work!
* **Brown Bag Lunch:** Bring food for yourself (Lean towards, fresh, organic, vegetarian choices in order to align with The Redwood Studios vegetarian policy)and (optional)food to share. Get to know your workshop playmates, socializing and breaking bread together, between our morning and afternoon workshop sessions, in our community gathering spot, The Redwood Green Room, 3rd floor. If you prefer to break away on your own for lunch, be aware that there are limited "eating out" options close enough to the venue to be back within the hour.
***Reconnect with your true self through fun, community, and joyful expression.***
**How to Claim Your Spot in the Workshop**
Please note that this event can be attended **in-person only**.
**Pre-registration is required.** Registration closes at 10pm May 23.

Conscious Living ~ An Experiential Community Program for Embodied Consciousness
### **“Conscious Living”**
**An Experiential Community Program for Embodied Consciousness**
**Resuming Thursday, May 21, 2026**
**On break:** June 4, 2026 **\| Summer break:** July & August 2026
**Thursdays, 7:30 PM (in person)**
**Facilitator:** Sophia Barna, M.Ed., M.S.W.
**Location: Toronto Theosophical Society,** 792 Glencairn Ave., Toronto, ON **(Basement Room)**
“Conscious Living” is a weekly experiential program that bridges the study of consciousness with the practical realities of everyday life. Rooted in the *Map of Consciousness* developed by David R. Hawkins and *A Course in Miracles (ACIM)*, this program invites participants to move beyond theory into lived, embodied awareness.
Together, we explore what it means to live “in the world, but not of it” — grounded, present, and engaged, while rooted in higher awareness.
The Map of Consciousness serves as our reference point. Each meeting focuses on a specific state of consciousness, blending study and practice so participants not only understand these states intellectually, but also learn to embody and live them in daily life.
In addition to the Map of Consciousness, A Course in Miracles (ACIM) provides a complementary framework for the program. ACIM offers practical spiritual principles for transforming perception, cultivating forgiveness, and recognizing the inner guidance of love and truth. Its teachings emphasize the shift from fear to love, the release of judgment, and the practice of conscious choice in every moment.
Our gatherings are grounded in the states of Love, Joy, and Gratitude, corresponding to the elevated energy field of 540 on the Map of Consciousness. From this frequency of openness and lightness, we come together to uplift, inspire, and grow in awareness — individually and collectively.

### **About the Facilitator:**
**Sophia Barna** is an educator and facilitator with a long-standing interest in the relationship between inner life and everyday life: how spiritual principles become livable, embodied realities rather than abstract ideas. Her work bridges consciousness research, reflective inquiry, and practical methods for self-observation and inner transformation. Her background includes graduate training in education and social work, and advanced professional training in EMDR.
In “Conscious Living,” she draws on the Map of Consciousness (as developed by David R. Hawkins) and the spiritual psychology of A Course in Miracles, inviting participants to explore themes such as presence, perception, forgiveness, and the cultivation of love, joy, and gratitude through shared practice and dialogue. Her facilitation style is heart-centered, clear, and experiential, with space for participants to learn through reflection, discussion, and embodied exercises.
***Important distinction:*** While Sophia’s clinical experience, education, and skills shape how she holds the space and communicates, this series does not constitute EMDR therapy, psychotherapy or a clinical solution for mental or emotional problems. It is a group experience offered in the spirit of service and public learning, and it should not replace care from a licensed provider in a private and confidential therapeutic relationship.

Surrey Personality Matched Speed Dating Zoom
**🪷 Speed Dating Live on Zoom for Singles near Surrey**
You get to cycle through rapid one-on-one Zoom dates with Surrey singles matched by age and personality, while the host manages transitions so you can focus on the person in front of you.
As part of the process, a two-minute quiz captures your personality — those details are used to identify compatible Surrey singles for your rounds, so the format works harder than any dating app.
Once it is wrapped up, we send mutual match results — with nothing shared unless both parties agreed — and you are in control of what happens next.

Free In-Person Events: How to Let Go of the Past and Move Forward
The emotional pain from past bad experiences easily lingers in the present, making it hard to enjoy life and create your future. Even when you think you've moved on, the negative emotions can be triggered, sending you back into the pain of that experience.
And we are talking about pain; emotions such as grief, depression, anxiety, fear (or terror), boiling anger, simmering resentment, feelings of shame, blaming and regret can leave you incapacitated to a greater or lesser degree.
In this local event we will be discussing the reasons why these past bad experiences have the power to affect you long after they occurred. We'll go over why the emotional pain can be so strong. We'll also discuss some simple solutions to overcome your emotional pain and be free to fully enjoy your life again.
Examples of painful experiences include:
* A broken relationship or divorce.
* Death or loss of a loved one.
* Death of a pet.
* A sudden shock or bad news.
* A betrayal.
* Being part of an abusive relationship.
* A bad injustice.
* Loss of a job, position or business.
* A grave illness or injury.
The negative emotions from these experiences don't just go away on their own. But the good news is there is a way to clear them out of your way.
Be sure to click on the red "Attend" button below to come to this local event. We look forward to seeing you there.
This group is sponsored the Dianetics & Scientology Self-Improvement Center.
