Philosophical Reading: Byung Chul-Han’s The Burnout Society
Philosophical Reading: Byung Chul-Han’s The Burnout Society
**Why are so many of us exhausted** — not from hardship, but from **the relentless pressure to do more, be more, optimize more?** Korean-German philosopher Byung-Chul Han has a diagnosis, and it might make you look at your own daily life differently. The Burnout Society is a short, sharp book that asks **why burnout, depression, and anxiety have become the characteristic experiences of our time — and whether the problem runs deeper than stress management or work-life balance.** Byung-Chul Han is a Korean-German philosopher based in Berlin who writes short, dense books diagnosing what’s gone wrong in contemporary life. He writes short, dense books — often under 100 pages — that draw on continental philosophy, cultural theory, and East Asian thought to diagnose something gone wrong in contemporary life. The Burnout Society, first published in German in 2010, was one of his early breakthroughs and one of his most widely read works. Join us for a close reading and open discussion. No prior knowledge of Han or continental philosophy is required. Participants are encouraged to read the text in advance and come prepared with a passage, a question, or a point of resistance. Open philosophical discussion in the heart of Prague
Open philosophical discussion in the heart of Prague
Welcome to the international Café Philo in Prague. We meet every first Saturday of the month in the cosy [Café MillÚme](https://store11473398.ecwid.com) in the center of Prague. We choose a participant randomly, by lottery, who then has the privilege to determine the topic of our discussion. We will reflect, ponder and exchange arguments until our brains are on fire. Philosophy isn't just something for universities, it is a way to open your mind to new thoughts and questions. No application is necessary, there is no entrance fee and there are no prerequisites for participating, except curiosity and respect for other people. We meet from 17:15 until 18:45 to follow together the white rabbit into the wonderland of philosophy... More information about me under this [link](https://sophonautik.ch/english/).
Symposium
Symposium
Join us for Symposium! đŸŒžđŸŒ»đŸŒł In antiquity, a symposium was a gathering of friends who came together to recline around a shared table, where wine and conversation flowed freely into the night. Together, they would choose a topic and take turns speaking, listening, and laughing—guided by the rhythms of drink and dialogue. Inspired by this tradition, our Symposium has no set theme. It's an invitation to come together with other curious minds, to offer up questions or ideas, and to vote together on where to begin. Whether you're hungry for connection or simply seeking space to speak and be heard, you're warmly welcomed to join the conversation. Symposium will meet in parks throughout Prague, embracing the sunshine and pleasant weather while we have it. Bring a blanket or something to sit on. There’s no cost to join, but please bring a snack or drink to share, if you're able. Most of all, bring a curious mind and a willingness to learn from the insight of others. Feel free to bring a friend or two--also, children and friendly dogs are welcome! \*\*\* If the weather doesn't cooperate, we'll try to find an alternate venue—so keep an eye on the event chat or your email for updates. Also, despite the origins of the Symposium, our goal is not necessarily to get drunk and the organizer would encourage you not to come with that sole purpose in mind. :) The first 45 minutes of the event will be dedicated to simply getting to know one another, and we highly encourage you to join for this part. We will then vote whether to continue free conversation, to join together in a single conversation, or to split up into multiple groups. Afterwards, you’re welcome to stay or follow onto any spontaneous activity that unfolds. A note on attendance: If you need to cancel, please do so at least a few days in advance and update your RSVP accordingly. This helps honor the host’s efforts and makes space for others who would like to attend. Repeated last-minute cancellations or no-shows may result in being placed on the waitlist for future events.
International Café Philo: Open philosophical discussion for everybody
International Café Philo: Open philosophical discussion for everybody
Open philosophical discussion, thinking together about a topic in a philosophical way. The topic will be chosen by the participants at the beginning of the event. No application, no entrance fee. (But as we are meeting in a normal coffee shop, you have to order at least a cup of coffee or tea.) Experience the joy of real dialogue with other people about the really important topics of life! Follow the white rabbit into the wonderland of philosophy... You find informations about me and the event [here](https://sophonautik.ch/english/). Je nach Gruppe kann die Veranstaltung auch auf [Deutsch](https://sophonautik.ch/deutsch/) abgehalten werden.
Social Comparisons: How to compare yourself with others fairly
Social Comparisons: How to compare yourself with others fairly
“You shouldn’t compare yourself with others” is common advice these days. The idea is that if you compare yourself with someone who is doing better than you in something that matters to you, this social comparison is going to make you feel bad. And, therefore, it is wise to avoid social comparisons altogether. But
 * Is it realistic to eliminate social comparisons from our lives, given that we are extremely social creatures? * Wouldn’t we miss some of the benefits of social comparisons if we did? * Is the problem the social comparisons themselves or our responses to those comparisons? * Is there a way that we could adaptively respond to unfavourable social comparisons? * Has social media transformed the effects of social comparisons? At the next meetup, we will discuss social comparisons from psychological and practical perspectives. To inform our discussion, I have selected a practical CBT-based guide on social comparisons written by the clinical psychologist Joel Milden. You can read it here: * [How to Compare Yourself with Others Fairly](https://psyche.co/guides/how-to-compare-yourself-with-others-fairly-and-respond-better) by Joel Milden We will also have time to talk about ourselves and brainstorm ideas for next meetups. See you soon. Ángel

Free In-Person Events: How to Let Go of the Past and Move Forward
Free In-Person Events: How to Let Go of the Past and Move Forward
The emotional pain from past bad experiences easily lingers in the present, making it hard to enjoy life and create your future. Even when you think you've moved on, the negative emotions can be triggered, sending you back into the pain of that experience. And we are talking about pain; emotions such as grief, depression, anxiety, fear (or terror), boiling anger, simmering resentment, feelings of shame, blaming and regret can leave you incapacitated to a greater or lesser degree. In this local event we will be discussing the reasons why these past bad experiences have the power to affect you long after they occurred. We'll go over why the emotional pain can be so strong. We'll also discuss some simple solutions to overcome your emotional pain and be free to fully enjoy your life again. Examples of painful experiences include: * A broken relationship or divorce. * Death or loss of a loved one. * Death of a pet. * A sudden shock or bad news. * A betrayal. * Being part of an abusive relationship. * A bad injustice. * Loss of a job, position or business. * A grave illness or injury. The negative emotions from these experiences don't just go away on their own. But the good news is there is a way to clear them out of your way. Be sure to click on the red "Attend" button below to come to this local event. We look forward to seeing you there. This group is sponsored the Dianetics & Scientology Self-Improvement Center.
