It's the first Thursday of the month, and that means we will be replaying a game we played recently - Manhattan Project: Energy Empire.
We have two copies of the game. So we can accommodate 10 players. RSVPs will be set at 10. Anyone joining after the 10 spots are full will be put on the waiting list. If you have a copy of MM:EE, then let us know, and we will increase the RSVPs.
Manhattan Project: Energy Empire Description: From the ashes of war, nations rise to power in the atomic age! In ***Manhattan Project: Energy Empire***, each player takes control of a nation struggling for power in the latter part of the 20th century. They build up their nation’s industry, commerce, and government by acquiring resources, building structures, and tapping sources of energy.
The major threat in *Energy Empire* is not war, but uncertain global impacts, that result from side effects of industrialization and pollution. Many actions come with a cost. So, as nations become more industrious, they also increase the amount of pollution in the environment. Careful use of science can mitigate the harmful effects of industry, and can also help avert global crises.
*Energy Empire* uses worker placement, tableau-building, and resource management mechanics. On each turn, a player can choose to either work or generate. On a work turn, a player plays a single worker on the main board, then uses workers and energy to activate cards in their tableau. Players may spend energy to use an occupied space on the main board, so no spaces are ever completely blocked. On a generate turn, players get to renew their supply of energy by rolling "energy dice" that represent nuclear, coal, oil, solar, and other forms of energy.

The purpose of Thinkers and Drinkers is to facilitate casual but meaningful and interesting conversations with other people in a face-to-face setting. The topics cover a wide variety of issues and are different for every meeting. While conversations may get heated at times, we ask that all members be respectful of each other and refrain from personal insults.

**Contemporary True Crime & Storytelling Most Often Spotlights the Villains:**
***Is there a meaningful difference between understanding a killer and being fascinated by one? Where's the line?***
True crime has always been with us — penny dreadfuls, tabloids, In Cold Blood — but has something shifted in the recent decades. Podcasts like Serial and My Favorite Murder, docuseries like Netflix's Making a Murderer, and entire cable channels dedicated to murder-as-entertainment have turned real suffering into a booming content industry. Is that something to celebrate, scrutinize, or just sit with uncomfortably?
Is this part of a larger trend of glorifying the villain?
**Some angles worth sitting with:**
* The content boom has made this a business — and families are often the last to know. Crime Junkie, Netflix docuseries, Patreon true crime pods — someone is profiting every time a family's worst chapter gets a new season, and several have spoken publicly about learning a docuseries existed the same day the trailer dropped.
* The killer gets the marquee, the victim gets a footnote. Dennis Rader (BTK), Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer, Edmund Kemper — household names, all of them. The people they killed, largely not.
* Villains prominent in other entertainment: Sports, movies, videogames etc.
* Today's media villains are yesterday's killers. You, Dexter, (some other villain). The world is seen through their eyes and psychology, giving the viewer a sympathetic lense.
* Who gets covered is not random. Missing white woman syndrome is documented and measurable; the cases that become cultural touchstones say a lot about whose suffering we've decided is worth dramatizing.
* Not every famous case even has a killer to blame. JonBenét Ramsey has been a media fixture for nearly 30 years with no one ever charged — which raises the question of what we're actually chasing when there's no monster to pin it on.
**Questions to Consider:**
* Does true crime content actually make people safer, or is "awareness" mostly a guilt-free justification for what is really just entertainment?
* How many serial killers can you name? Can you name that many victims?
* Should producers and platforms be required to involve victims' families — or at minimum, notify them — before releasing content?
* Why do you think women make up the majority of true crime consumers, given that women are disproportionately the victims in these stories?
* Is the JonBenét phenomenon different in kind — or does an unsolved case just reveal more honestly what's driving the interest all along?
* Dahmer merch. Kemper fan accounts. At what point does documenting a killer's story tip into something more troubling?

**SKILL LEVEL:** Not recommended for beginners. You need to know how to use brakes properly on steep hills and have fit legs due to some sections with rolling hills and long inclines.

**PARKING AND MEETUP SPOT**
\*\*\*IMPORTANT! The meeting area/parking lot is at the **rear end of the building**, not the small front lot.\*\*\* Drive in and make the first left turn. We’ll be standing somewhere near the end of the first row.
If you don’t see the **Terrapin Adventure** sign and stations at the fence line, you’re in the wrong parking lot.
Plan to arrive by 10:45 ish so you have time to get yourself ready and check in by 10:55 am. We’ll do an icebreaker question then depart at 11:00. If you’re late, put in "Lake Elkhorn" in a phone nav app and you should be able to catch up.
**TYPE OF BIKE:** Hybrid and mountain bike tires are ideal; there’s a long dirt and gravel section of the Patuxent River Trail which was a little bumpy on our last ride. We manage with our thicker road tires but would prefer hybrid. Ensure bike is the correct frame size for your height so you can get maximum output. Participants are responsible for ensuring their bike tires, brakes, and chain are in good condition and they have a spare tire on hand. Organizers can try to help but aren't responsible for everyone's bike conditions.
**PACE:** It’s up to you. HOWEVER: The event organizers have fit legs (avg. 10-18 mph). And some of us like to do a cardio workout at some point. We make stops at tricky points on the trail and /or regroup every 2-4 miles. Since paved trails can sometimes be crowded, we don’t have expectations of being able to go very fast.
· If you prefer a **faster pace** than the lead riders, you can make stops to wait for them to catch up.
· If you’re **not sure what your avg. speed** is, be prepared to use a nav app to ride solo in case you don’t catch up to us at our stops.
**BIKE ROUTE SUMMARY**
We have three distance options mapped out, ranging from 10 to 22 miles (out and back).
I would say this bike route has more hills than most others that we do. We start off road biking about ¼ mile to the rear of Savage Park. We’ll get to the paved trail and encounter a couple of short hills. Then we’ll ride relatively flat sections (except one long steep downhill at Vollmerhausen Rd, and a couple of other shorter hills. On the return, we’ll have to conquer the notorious Vollmerhausen incline.
You will see two historic truss bridges (one when you drive around from Gorman Rd and the other when you ride through it and stop for a water break), the river and 1-3 lakes, pass through marshy areas on boardwalks and bike through woody fields.
**DISTANCE OPTIONS**
Participants can choose to return at any point. These are just suggestions.
**OPTION A (\~5.8 miles each way, +/- 517 ft, 7.8% incline)**
Bike to Lake Elkhorn, go around, stop for a break and return on your own, with anyone else who wants to return, or wait for option B bikers to get back and return with them. Use a phone nav app to assist with your return if you’re not familiar with this area.
**OPTION B (\~9 miles each way, +/-870 ft, 7.8% incline)**
After Option A, bike up to Lake Kittamaqundi, go around (distance is 1 .4 miles). We'll stop for a 10-15 minute break at the water feature/grassy area/go to Whole Foods. You can return the same way. This option entails using a sidewalk, and a portion of road and road crossings. Speed around the lake will be slower due to pedestrian traffic.
**OPTION C (\~11 miles each way, +/-870 ft, 7/8% incline)**
After Option B, we'll bike a short NW connector trail, cross over Little Patuxent Pkwy at the light, and go left into Wilde Lake Park. Bike around the lake from the left side and return the same way to Lake Kittamaqundi. Speed will be slower due to elevation changes, the curvy trail, and pedestrians. Stop for a break, then return to Savage Park. (This entails a road crossing and sidewalk.)
**BATHROOMS**
Bathrooms are at Historic Savage Mill (from our parking lot, go to the rear entry doors, go straight down the stairway, and look for bathrooms near the stairway.
In Savage Park, which we pass through, bathrooms are only open during certain months,
Further up will be port-a-potty at the truss bridge stop and bathrooms at Whole Foods.

**OPTION TO SOCIALIZE AFTERWARDS**
Option to go into Historic Savage Mill afterwards to cool down/walk around/have a drink or meal. We’ll probably go to Roggenart Bakery and sit on the patio where we can watch our bikes nearby.
**RECOMMENDATIONS**
**Bring:** Water bottles, snacks, biking gloves, bike bell, bike lock, helmet visor, sunglasses, bike tube, pump, patch, first aid kit, mobile phone with nav app installed (e.g. Google maps, we use RidewithGPS). If you get leg cramps during or after a ride, take electrolytes before and during your ride (or add salt and magnesium to your water). A change of clothes for your ride home or a car seat cover to absorb sweat.
Clothing: Wear biking gloves and durable clothing so that if you do fall, your skin is protected. Avoid wearing all black, all grey, all dark brown, or all dark blue, which blends in with pavement, especially while riding through a shady segment. Consider wearing something lighter to help others notice you.
**REQUIREMENTS**
**Participants must wear tightly secured helmets when on their bike.**
**Be proactive to avoid a fall/crash and minimize injury:**
· Keep a distance between yourself and other bikers. If the biker ahead of you suddenly stops, you should be able to avoid hitting them.
· Don’t make stops on the trail. Pull over to the side and use hand gestures to let people know you’re slowing down to make a stop.
· Yelling out “Passing on your left” and/or ringing a bike bell as you approach people ahead of you, so they don’t inadvertently move in your line of travel.
· Slowing down to wait, rather than speeding up when trying to pass people at the same time walkers/bikers are approaching you from the opposite direction.
· Avoid potholes and debris and slow down when approaching bumps
· When approaching road crossings and iffy situations, triple-check before crossing and don’t let yourself be distracted by talking, etc.
· Ensure your helmet is tightly secured so that it won’t move if you hit the ground.

Participants should understand that biking is an inherently dangerous activity, and an accident could happen at any time. **Participation is at your own risk**.

RSVPs are required. The reason is that it should increase your own enjoyment. You see, the ideal number of players for a pickup soccer game is perhaps 6x6 - 8x8; some players won't attend if they think the turnout will be low, and others will just assume the game will be cancelled even though we always play. (As a practical matter, smaller games are less fun since the comics won't have the audience they need, but, they do have two hidden benefits: shorter, more intense games/workouts and fewer face kicks/yellow cards. So we play no matter how small or large.) So non-RSVPers are a little short sighted, since they don't seem to want to maximize their own enjoyment in the long run. Rational and sane players who have a good chance of attending RSVP a week early both here and at https://meetup.com/dcsoccer , the parent soccer group.

Chronic Illness Board Games Meetup
Come to the Silver Spring library to play games some chronically ill friends! Members are adults who suffer from conditions including POTS, ME/CFS, long covid, MCAS, rheumatoid arthritis, Ehlers Danlos, multiple sclerosis, ulcerative colitis, autoimmune kidney disease, and more. We usually play a couple casual games, and we also have coloring books. Feel free to bring your own favorite games too!
We'll in SMALL ROOM 2 on the third floor of the Silver Spring library, just outside the elevator. We ask that everyone wears a mask.

(Trailhead) Hike: Seven Bends, VA
(Trailhead hike) Explore one of the newest state parks in Virginia. The park is located in the picturesque "oxbow" area of the North Shenandoah River. Moderate hikers will cover Hikes include the Eagle's Edge Trail, River Bend Rise Trail, Massanutten Trail, Talus Trail, Reservoir Trail and Gakotta Trail, while long hikers will add a there-and-back on the Massanutten Trail. Est.: 11.5 miles, 2000' elevation, and 8.5 miles, 1500' elevation. Park map. Hike fee: $5.
Trailhead: Seven Bends State Park, 2111 S. Hollingsworth Rd. Woodstock, VA, 10:00 AM
Driving Directions
From Vienna Metro Station to Seven Bends State Park, VA, Hollingsworth Road Entrance
1. Follow I-66 West for around 62 miles.
2. Take exit 1A to merge onto I-81 S toward Roanoke. Follow I-81 South for 17.4 miles.
3. Take exit 283 for VA-42 toward Woodstock.
4. Turn left to go East on VA-42/W Reservoir Rd.
5. Continue straight through the town of Woodstock.
6. In about a mile, turn right onto Hollingsworth Road. Drive across the one lane bridge and turn left to stay on Hollingsworth Road.
7. Continue Hollingsworth Road to Seven Bends State Park entrance.
Without traffic, the trip is 1 hour, 20 minutes
FIRST-TIME HIKERS
If you're a first-time hiker with us, please notify the leaders in advance so they can make sure you have the info you need. Hikers must be able to keep a 2-mph pace. New hikers are required to first complete a moderate hike.
**Liability Waiver:** Many of our hikes take place in remote wilderness areas where cell phone service is not available. Any person participating in any Club activity is responsible for their own safety, health and welfare, and must assume all risks and liabilities related to all Club activities. The Club, its hike leaders, hike sweeps, officers, and other representatives are not liable for any injuries, losses, or damage to persons, children, pets, and/or property, arising from any trips or activities of the Club. You are responsible for bringing enough water, food, and first aid supplies, including those for your personal medical conditions.
CANCELLATION POLICY
To cancel and receive a full bus hike refund, less a $5 processing fee, you must change your RSVP to "No" on Meetup **before NOON on the Friday** before the hike. If you change your RSVP after noon on the Friday before the hike, no refunds will be issued.
Cancellations to Metro/carpool/trailhead hikes will not issue a financial refund, but hiker must change their Meetup RSVP to NO so that leaders do not wait for them at the trailhead.

Anyone experiencing symptoms of upper respiratory illness should not attend the event.

Friday Bouldering at Bouldering Project - DC

**5\. Indemnity Agreement:** I agree to indemnify and hold harmless the organizer(s), co-organizer(s), event leaders, and other participants from any claims, damages, or expenses (including legal fees) arising out of or related to my actions or participation in these activities.
**6\. Photo/Video Release \(Optional\):** By signing this waiver, I grant permission for any photographs or videos taken during the events to be used for promotional or group-related purposes. (Participants may opt out by notifying the organizer.)
**7\. Agreement to Follow Rules:** I agree to abide by all rules, instructions, and guidance provided by the event organizers and leaders. Failure to comply may result in my removal from the group.

In person peer-led support group for survivors of complex trauma
**Complex Trauma Support Group**
Our group is intended for survivors of complex trauma. If you are here, it’s likely that so much of who you are and what you have experienced in this life is actually invisible to most people––to family, society, coworkers, and the people who are around you.
We are a peer-led group of survivors creating opportunities for ourselves and others to share our experiences, share support, and build relationships in kind community together. Survivor experiences might include: child sexual abuse, incest, child trafficking, and other experiences of people living with traumatic dissociation and complex PTSD.
**What to expect at your first meeting:**
Currently, we are offering a bi-monthly in person group at 2:00pm on the first and third Sunday of the month. The only criterion for joining the group is that you are a survivor of trauma wishing to have more kindness in your own life and share kindness with others, and that you agree to practice to group’s relational agreements available for view here: https://www.kindgroups.com/agreements. Joining the group is free of charge.
We ask that new people connect with us for 30 minutes on the phone or on zoom before coming to their first group, so that we can determine together that we are a good fit.
Our meetings last approximately 90 minutes. Participants are never required to share. You’re also welcome to choose a pseudonym and you will never be asked for private information. You are welcome to leave at any time.
The kindness that survivors can share when among others who have survived similar childhood experiences is something we rarely get to experience. Time spent with others who understand even a little bit more about us is a relief. Our hope is to help ourselves and others experience that we are not alone. We wish for our efforts to be a cause of kindness in our own lives and the lives of each other.

Why are we unhappy? Where does emotional pain come from? Studies show that people who suffer from long-term emotional pain have painful experiences in their lives that were never fully resolved in their mind. In other words, there were issues in the past that were not completely dealt with. This can include abuse in childhood, breakups, divorce, death of a loved one, to name a few.
How do you know whether you have gotten over something painful? Here is an easy test: Do you still have attention on what had happened to you? For instance, do you still find yourself thinking about something painful that you went through? If you are, then you are not over it. In fact, in severe cases, people find themselves playing a "tape" in their mind over and over again.
So how do you heal from your past? How do you stop the "tape" playing in your mind? In this meeting, you will learn a technique to help you with that.
