Thames Foreshore Visit - Southbank (Full Members only)
Running through the heart of London; the River Thames has played a central role in the history of the city, and when the tide is low, the capital’s longest archaeological site is revealed.
Come along on Sunday 24th May to explore its history!
**About the foreshore**
I will be your guide as we will be going down to the Thames foreshore at low tide, where we will have about 1h 30mins to have a look around for objects before the tide comes in.
I will tell you more about foreshore, the industry in the area and will be on hand to identify and date objects you find. Most objects you can spot sitting on the foreshore after being washed in on the tide (its eyes only, we are not allowed to dig or scrape the foreshore surface).
You will find everything from bits of pottery, clay pipes, bottles, animal bones to ship items. Most of the things we find are from the Medieval to the Victorian period or you might be lucky and find something Roman or older.
**The Thames Foreshore is private land, so before we go down, I have to give everyone a short talk on health & safety on the foreshore.**
We will be finished by about 2:45pm.
**Footwear**
The foreshore is very stoney and sometimes muddy, so please wear sensible shoes (preferably walking boots/shoes or wellington boots). Plastic gloves and bags will be provided.
**Cost**
This is for Full Members of the group only and will be free for Full Members.
**Become a Full Member**

The Castle climbing wall, "Storm the breach" Sunday mornings!
**About**
THE CASTLE CLIMBING CENTER has about 135 roped/auto-belays numbered routes with each route having up to 6 grades giving it approx 700 routes in total. THE CASTLE CLIMBING CENTER offers bouldering, top-roping, leading and auto-belays at their center. Some of us prefer bouldering while others will be in the top roping, leading or auto-belaying - this is up to you! We climb for a couple of hours and then the group regroups at 12.00 noon sometimes without me other times with me in The Brownswood pub, 271 Green Lanes, Finsbury Park, London N4 2EX for a spot of lunch and a libation.
(https://goo.gl/maps/S4FZ9j1AYMPDs7uQ6) a stone's throw from the castle.
**Meetups**
We get together every Thursday & Sunday at THE CASTLE CLIMBING CENTER meeting at 9:00am in the warming up area or else look out for someone wearing a black RAMS t-shirt around the center. If you're joining for the first time let us know via message and we will keep an eye out for you at the start :)
**New Climbers!**
Unfortunately, if you haven't climbed before it isn't as easy as just turning up and climbing up the wall. To climb safely you need to understand the hazards and be able to use the equipment correctly. You must have basic climbing skills and know how to put on a harness, attach a rope to a harness using a rethreaded figure of eight(figure of eight on the bight) and know how to use a belay device to pay out the rope and secure a falling climber etc. So before your first climb, you may be required by the climbing center to fill out health and safety forms. This may involve a quick test on climbing rules at the counter on arrival. Please add an extra 10/15 minutes before your session if you need to register for the first time. THE CASTLE CLIMBING CENTER terms and conditions will apply. Please also note signing up for the Meetup session won’t necessarily grant you access to the center.
**Other communication**
Within these groups, you are possibly likely to develop long-lasting friendships. Don't forget we have a Discord page and WhatsApp https://chat.whatsapp.com/JNJ81oLSKB2JGaNm79em0C. The group will always be very varied when it comes to climbing levels, abilities and modality preferences. Do shout out if you have any questions. If you want to have a chat about this or other meetups, or just to keep in touch, ask to join us on Discord and/or WhatsApp. We have a dedicated THE CASTLE CLIMBING CENTER chat, but also talk about all things climbing (and some non-climbing!) including trips, gear talks and looking for climbing partner/s situations.
**You’ll Rock it**
A word of warning this sport is very, very addictive once bitten your its mistress for life. The simple challenge of you against the rock is sublime, there are competitions but then really the only real competition is 'you and the rock'. As climbing can be a very social activity we look forward to sharing our passion with yours.
*Happy climbing!*
p.s. Eventually, we will be starting and incorporating our climbing academy where we aim to bring skills, ropework and technique etc to enhance your climbing ability, using 25mm chalk bag colored belts to indicate your level. Naturally, THE CASTLE CLIMBING CENTER will also run courses to help improve your techniques too. Contact THE CASTLE CLIMBING CENTER for more info.

Passing the grand **Moor Park House**, we reach the evocative ruins of **Waverley Abbey**, England’s first Cistercian monastery founded in 1128, and the nearby **Waverley Abbey House**, set beside a tranquil lake.
The trail then brings us to **Tilford village**, a picture-perfect English setting with a cricket pitch, riverside pub, and two medieval stone bridges across the **River Wey**. Continuing on, we pass an **800-year-old oak tree** of remarkable size and a nearby farm where pigs — and often piglets — can be seen in the fields.
Next we enter the **Bourne Woods**, an enchanting mix of heathland and coniferous forest. Here we actually pass through **specific filming locations** used in *Gladiator, Robin Hood, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, War Horse* and more than 20 other films. Walking these paths, you’ll stand where legendary battle scenes and cinematic moments were filmed.

Check photos of our past visit, it was a lovely trip which was enjoyed by us all https://www.meetup.com/Passionate-about-Travelling-Food-and-Events/photos/31438998/#496630274
Towards the north of the park, on a rise, is the copper horse statue. From there, the 4km Long Walk, an iconic tree lined path, slopes downhill to Windsor Castle, besides the Thames.
Virginia Water Lake was originally little more than a stream. During World War II, the lake was drained, as its obvious shape provided enemy guidance at night to Windsor and other important military targets in the area. It has been used by the crews for the Harry Potter films for lakeside scenes.
The Cascade, or Waterfall, is also notable. It was constructed from stones brought from Bagshot Heath. They are rumoured to be the remains from a Saxon settlement. From the Cascade a stream runs through a glen and ultimately enters the Thames at Chertsey. By the side of the Cascade, immense stones are arranged to form a cavern known as 'The Robber's Cave'.
**Walk description**
Distance: 7 - 8 miles
Grading: Easy no steep hills, flat path all the way
Rating: 2 out of 10
Ascent: 189m
Walk time: About 4.5 to 6.5 hours of actual walk/stroll, depending how fast we walk and how many of us.
On my first trip during Covid there were 30 of us, it took 6 hours to arrive to Windsor due to the size and lack of exercise as a result of being cooped up at home for way too long, we had a few breaks along the way while others caught up with us. Recently with a smaller group of 15 to 20 it took us 4 hours.
There will be 2 or 3 10 to 15 minutes break during our walk, as well as a 30 minutes lunch break where we can have a picnic on the grass. On our arrival to Winsor, you can opt to break up into small groups, a chance for some to visit the castle, this will cost extra to enter, there is a shopping centre, and several eateries joints, or some may wish to walk along the River Thames path etc.
This will be the 5th time i have organised this walk and we always end up at Lebanese Night which i discovered on my first visit. A restaurant severing delicious halal food and the price is quite reasonable too, check out website for details and menu [Lebanese Nights Windsor, Berkshire SL4 1PR - Menu, Reviews (94), Photos (20) - Restaurantji](https://www.restaurantji.co.uk/berkshire/windsor/lebanese-nights-/)
So on arrival in Windsor after exploring you will find a few of us here address 41 Thames St, Windsor
**MEETING POINT**
We will meet at Clapham Junction Train station at 9 am outside Marks and Spencer. We will leave the meeting point at 9:10am for the 09:19 am train.
Planned arrival time back into London of 7:00pm (we have a group train ticket and you are committed for the day until then).
Please note that this train ticket will allow you to leave from Windsor to London from Windsor and Eton riverside train station.
**FOOD**
We will stop during the hike for a snack lunch so please bring food and drink. We will visit a pub after the hike where we can get refreshments.
**Price £30 non refunded unless cancelled, minus PayPal fees**
**PLEASE RSVP ONLY ONCE YOU HAVE MADE PAYMENT, IF YOU RSVP WITHOUT MAKING PAYMENT YOUR RSVP WILL CHANGE TO NOT GOING.**

ABOUT OUR SECRET LONDON WALKS
It is a 15-year fascinating journey together to explore the whole of beautiful, enchanting Secret London.
The only walking group in the World offering this unique experience!
The individual walks have been created from an original route several miles in length (usually on average about 50 miles) where we have checked every nook and cranny, every hidden alleyway, lane, lost cobbled path, cul de sac, avenue, road or street in that area for you!
It is then shortened, to give back to you a magical walk with all the best bits of 'Lovely London', voted the best City in the World for the 10th year running!
What is given back to you is the most scenic, healthy walk (usually 3-6 miles in length) with some of the walks containing hidden cobbled lanes, lost shops, secret gems, areas lost in time, wonderful views, idyllic Instagram photo shots and all sorts! Now and then some brief local info is mentioned or something of historical importance along the way.
You will have plenty of time to chat and meet new friends whilst walking the amazing lost areas of London!
So we welcome you to the colourful highlights of this fascinating City of London with simply wonderful things to see!

**Hike Description**
We begin in the historic village of **Otford**, occupied for at least 3,000 years. Through the ages, it has been home to Iron Age farmers, Romans, royalty and archbishops. From here our route leads into the tranquil woods and grasslands of the Kentish countryside, reaching **Shoreham** before following the **Darent Valley Path** into the heart of the valley.
The trail takes us into the beautiful **Lullingstone Country Park**, internationally important for its collection of ancient trees. Beech, ash, oak, sweet chestnut and hornbeam all thrive here, with some specimens thought to be over 800 years old. Emerging from the woodland, we arrive at **Lullingstone Castle**, set beside its peaceful lake, before continuing to the site of **Lullingstone Roman Villa** — a rare survival of a Roman estate house first built around 100 AD.
From here we continue through rolling Kent fields, rewarded with views of the impressive **Eynsford Rail Viaduct**, its nine red-brick arches towering 22 metres above the valley floor.
Our hike concludes in the charming village of **Eynsford**, where we explore the evocative ruins of **Eynsford Castle**, a Norman stronghold built in 1088. With its riverside setting, ancient remains and traditional cottages, the village provides a perfect finale to a day steeped in history and countryside beauty.

COUNT RMH Housewarmer Volunteering (Ronald McDonald House)
Some trained COUNT volunteers work together once a month at RMH (http://www.rmhc-centralohio.org/volunteer.php) as Housewarmers (usually on the 1st Sunday from 1 – 5 PM). Some schedule other shifts at their convenience. You may try this out with less fuss by following a "Fast track" or go through the normal process.

• Show up and try it out.
• Complete application, etc. later.
Normal process

The Ronald McDonald House (RMH) provides housing and meals for families with sick children. The Columbus RMH is the largest in the world with 137 rooms. COUNT has been volunteering there since May 2014.
Housewarmers work with RMH guests to provide a home-like environment - greet, assist with family needs, answer phones, give tours, assist with checkin/checkout, prepare guest rooms after checkout, clean facility, laundry, restock supplies and staff the front desk. RMH Housewarmers volunteer at least one four-hour shift a month. All Housewarmers must complete an application and agree to a background check before they can be full fledged volunteers.
