Cinema Galeries : En Construcción
Cinema Galeries : En Construcción
**Cinema Galeries : En Construcción** 14/03 @ 18h45 PORTRAITS Work in Progress (En Construcción) is a portrait of people and of a neighbourhood. The film’s characters are builders working on a new building in the Raval, and the residents of this symbolic historical neighbourhood of Barcelona. Throughout the film, Guerin focuses on their faces and gestures, on how they speak and on how they occupy spaces. The composition of the shots is fundamental to his portrayal of the characters. The streets and spaces of the Raval, a popular working classneighbourhood in the city centre undergoing gentrification, are the other characters of the film. CONVERSATION AND THE POWER OF WORDS Through words, people with very different life stories and origins truly get to know each other: they listen to each other and they talk to each other. During the building work they learn to understand each other, to work together, to pass on their skills and to forge friendship. This sequence takes place when both the construction work and the film are coming to an end, and the viewer feels that a community has been created which connects the workers, local residents and also the film crew. Words are also often the means by which characters often become memorable for us, allowing us as viewers to learn to know and love them. WORK This is a film about work. It is about the builders working on the building, but also the filmmaker, Guerin and his student film crew, working to create a film over the two years during which they filmed the construction of the building. In this image, the builders are involved in the manual work of building a window. In the same way, the filmmaker uses the camera to create another window, the frame, to compose each shot in a meaningful way. Thus the construction of the building, brick by brick, progresses in parallel to the film, shot by shot. When the building is completed, so is the film. THE WINDOW AND THE FRAME WITHIN A FRAME The windows connect the outdoors and the indoors, the homes and the neighbourhood. Through the windows, the new building is incorporated into and visually connected with the neighbourhood, so that the interiors (the private spaces of homes) are linked with the exterior (the city). While Guerin uses his shots to create frames or visual windows showing the architecture, the shots are also transparent windows for seeing and documenting the life and reality of the neighbourhood. It is a visual idea of pictorial tradition that is characteristic of many of the film’s shots: the frame within a frame. In this photogram it is expressed by means of the connection between the foreground, showing the builders inside the building, and another frame in the middle distance: the window showing the façade of the church of Sant Pau del Camp. PRESENT AND PAST Different layers of time and history are brought together in a single image: the new construction of the building still in progress, the church which is still standing after eleven centuries, and even further away, other buildings from the 20th century. This gives a glimpse of a neighborhood, in which many different eras, cultures and origins coexist. And one of the main themes of the film is highlighted: the passing of time, the contrast between the stable and the transitory, the tension between construction and destruction, and memory and loss. Saturday Board Game Night
Saturday Board Game Night
Hello and welcome. We'll be playing some good games suited for newcomers and old members alike. Examples of games that we might play on an evening like this include: Diamant, Metro, Courtisans, Trails, Camel Up, Sushi Go, Spooks, Welcome To..., Between 2 Cities, Cartographers, Reptile Tank, and much more. If you're new and none of these titles mean anything to you, don't worry! These games are pretty easy to pick up as you play. And if you have a short and easy-going game you'd like to play, bring it along and we might play it. Hope to see you then! \~\~\~ **FAQ** for new members "Do I have to RSVP?" Yes, please. It helps us anticipate how many people are coming and consequently how many games we'll need. "Can I just join you in playing games?" Yes, absolutely. "Is there a fee?" No, it's free to join and play. However, please get at least one drink from the bar, as the hostel provides this space to us for free with the expectation that people buy drinks from them. "What kind of games do you play?
" Most games in our collection are light to medium-ish in complexity, fairly short, and pretty easy to pick up once you know the rules. We don’t tend to play heavy eurogames or wargames as they take up too much time and often require an explanation of an hour or more. We also don’t tend to play party games. "Do the games belong to the hostel?"
Nope! All of the games present are owned by members who bring games along from their own private collections. Please be sure to treat every game with care and respect. "How do I know which games you're going to play and which I can join?" We'll usually loosely mill around and decide on games on the moment, depending on who takes the initiative, so it really depends on what's available to us and who wants to play which game. Generally, we'll split up in groups, play a game or two, reconvene, and split up in different groups to play a different game. "Do I have to have experience in playing games?" No, usually we'll play some pretty easy-to-learn games that you'll get the hang of in no time. And should you get a taste for slightly more complex games, we have those too! "Can I bring a game of my own?" Yes, absolutely. Just maybe don't bring games that are too complex and might take more than 1 hour to play. Also, don't bring Cards Against Humanity. "Should I bring snacks for everybody?" No, but thank you for offering! "Can I bring snacks and drinks for myself?" You can bring your own food into the hostel but, as mentioned, they do expect us to buy our drinks at the bar. Also, they appreciate it if we clean up after ourselves, i.e. bring back empty glasses and bottles to the bar, put back chairs in their place, throw away trash, etc... "Do I have to speak English?" We prefer it if you could because not everyone in the group speaks Dutch fluently but we're pretty relaxed about it so don't worry too much if you're not that confident in your English speaking skills. "Do you do this every week?
" Yes. We haven’t missed a board game night since 1977! "Can the Eye see me?" Yes, the Eye sees ALL, but don't worry, it's pretty benign and just wants to know if you're winning or not. ️
Dance Improvisation & Body Awareness Workshop: capoeira-inspired dance
Dance Improvisation & Body Awareness Workshop: capoeira-inspired dance
These workshops are open to anyone interested in exploring movement as a way to deepen body awareness, improve mobility and enjoy dancing in connection with others. The workshops offer an original blend of dance practices, combining contemporary dance, elements of Body-Mind Centering®, relaxation and mindfulness techniques,as well as capoeira, and a pinch of partnered styles such as forró, tango, and fusion dance. Objectives: * To unwind and enjoy improvised movement — with or without prior dance experience * To deepen body awareness * To develop connection with dance partners * To learn techniques from various dance and movement forms and apply them in improvisation * To stay active while having fun and sharing enjoyable moments **Capoeira angola** Capoeira angola is the traditional, more ritualistic style of capoeira. Its games are full of symbolic movements, subtle strategy, and deep musical and philosophical expression. It emphasizes slow, deliberate movements and acrobatic elements, close-to-the-ground play, and rich cultural traditions. Its focus on rhythm, improvisation, and the fluid interaction between players creates a shared language of movement that highlights connection between participants and creativity. These workshops will introduce participants to the foundational concepts and movements of Capoeira Angola, offering tools to expand their movement vocabulary and enhance improvisational expression. The workshops open to all, welcoming movers, dancers and non-dancers of every level and background. Programme: 14:00 – **Workshop 1: You are a monkey** by Finhinho This Capoeira Angola workshop invites dancers to explore animal movement patterns through play, rhythm, and grounded physicality. We’ll move close to the floor, shift weight with ease, and find moments of lightness, inversion, and surprise. Expect a mix of strength, softness, and humor, with plenty of listening—to gravity, to rhythm, and to each other. Come curious, ready to play, and not afraid to be a little upside down. 15:20 – Break and refreshments 15:40 – **Workshop 2: Release the animal** by Agnieszka This improvisation workshop invites you to move from instinct rather than overthinking, drawing inspiration from animal movement and behavior. We’ll explore how these qualities show up in solo and shared dances, responding to space, others, and the moment as it unfolds. Expect sweat, surprises, and a healthy mix of focus and play. Come curious, ready to move, and willing to trust your body—it already knows what to do. More info and registration: https://fusion-circus.com/events/capoeira-inspired-march

UNO #470
UNO #470
Let's continue the tradition and play UNO, everybody is welcome :) If you're on the waitlist please check your messages, especially on Sunday. If people drop off last minute I tend to message people on the waitlist to see who can come. We'll be playing at the lobby of Radisson RED, Brussels. The address of the hotel is: Rue d'Idalie 35, 1050 Bruxelles My number is 0471 45 55 02. Feel free to call if you cannot solve a physics question, cannot find the place or simply need a hug. I have quickly written a set of rules on how we play. It is assumed that the reader has a basic concept of the game. *** Setup: * Each player starts with 6 or 7 cards each (depending on total number of players) * A card is shown in play in the middle of everyone, this is known as the top card. Goal: * The goal of the game for each player is to get rid of all cards in your hand Rules: * Whenever you go from two cards to one card, you have to say "UNO". * Each player takes his turn one by one, initially going in the clock-wise direction * A card may be played if it matches the same colour or same number or same type as the top card in play * The two black cards (Draw 4 and Wild) can be played regardless of the top card in play. * Interruption rule: You may interrupt the general flow of the game (clockwise or counter-clockwise) if you have the EXACT same card as the top card in play. If you manage to play the card prior to the person whose turn it's supposed to be, then the game continues on from you in the same direction it was previously. (Unless the reverse card was interrupted, then the direction changes). * Draw2 or Draw4 cards can be played in accordance to the interruption rule. The following person after the interrupt has to take the accumulated number of cards. If however, cards have already been drawn AND seen by the person who was supposed to take the cards, then only the remainder of cards has to be drawn. * Once someone has no cards remaining in his hand, play stops and we start counting points. Points: * Number cards have the face value as the number of points. i.e. number 6 is worth 6 points, number 0 is worth 0 points, number 4 is worth 4 points. * Skip, reverse and Draw2 are worth 20 points each * Wild and draw4 are worth 50 points each

Deep Conversation-- Question Chosen in Session
Deep Conversation-- Question Chosen in Session
Welcome to our weekly event in the upstairs room of The Sister Café, rue Chair et Pain 3, one block from the Grand Place. Please get there early enough to order your drink at the bar first. Thank you! After introductions we will collect questions from the group participants, choose one by voting then discuss it for an hour. Then most of us stay for drinks and bizarre conversations. Past questions have been wide and not confined to academic philosophy: What is a genuine friend? Is social media turning us into emotional zombies? Do we lose some of the experience of things by defining them? Are we driven by sex? Is loneliness a personal failure? Is morality relative? **Crucially, be kind and respectful and generous** in your disagreements; remember how much you personally enjoy someone else proving you wrong before celebrating your cutting counterexamples.
