This American Woman: A One-in-a-Billion Memoir by Zarna Garg
***Venue Notes:***
*The venue will be updated by EOD April 15 when we can get a better sense of the weather. We will either be at the Garden in Del Ray (100% outdoor venue) or La Madeleine in Kingstowne.*
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/221289749-this-american-woman
**Award-winning comedian Zarna Garg turns her astonishing life story into a hilarious memoir, spilling all the chai on her wild ride from escaping an arranged marriage and homelessness in India to carving her own path in America and launching a dazzling second act in midlife.**
**“A deeply honest and hilarious book about how you always win if you bet on yourself.”—Amy Poehler**
Throughout Zarna’s whole childhood in India, everyone called her “so American” just for reading the newspaper, having deep thoughts, and talking back to anyone over the age of thirty. When Zarna’s dad tried to marry her off at age fourteen, Zarna fled—first to the streets of Mumbai and ultimately to the glittering paradise of Akron, Ohio, where she got to become American for real.
On Zarna’s very American quest to find herself and her calling, she threw herself wholeheartedly into roles like dog-bite lawyer, crazy perfectionist stay-at-home mom, Indian matchmaker, prizewinning screenwriter, and more. It wasn’t until a dare led her to a stand-up comedy open mic that Zarna finally found her spiritual getting paid cold hard cash for her big fat mouth.
And as Zarna discovered, after surviving the brutal streets of Mumbai, the cutthroat world of stand-up comedy is nothing.
*This American Woman* is an exuberant story of fighting for your right to determine your own destiny and triumphing beyond what you ever dreamed was possible. Zarna’s mantra becomes a call to It’s never too late. If Zarna can do it, you can, too.
After work drinks and games
There’s a beautiful outdoor beer garden in the heart of Del Ray. Let’s take advantage of the nice mild weather this week and try something new. I’ll bring a few social games that aren’t packed yet if anyone wants to play, or just come make some new friends and unwind. Friendly pups are welcome too!

First Friday Women's Self Defense Workshop
The Mission: Finding Your Strength
It’s natural to feel intimidated by the idea of a self-defense class. At Kore, our “First Friday” sessions are designed to replace that hesitation with confidence. This isn’t about traditional “gym moves” or martial arts rituals—it’s about taking agency over your life.
Taught by our Certified Female Instructors, this free workshop focuses on practical applications of the Kore Standard. We help you sharpen your natural intuition and provide a toolkit of effective, simple responses to common safety concerns. This is about building the confidence to navigate the world on your own terms.
Private Dark Chocolate Tasting in Chantilly!
We've done this event before and it was interesting and fun — and this time we've booked a private group tasting just for us!
Tour this small chocolate factory and then taste a spectrum of flavors of (dark) single origin chocolate, with expert guidance very much like a wine tasting! There's also a small chocolate shop of course :)
Cost is $25 per person (payable to me, I've reserved for a private group of 4 people and we can add more as we wish).
The location is in Chantilly and not convenient to metro (though there is a bus). I am happy to pick up participants at the East Falls Church (if you're riding from downtown) or West Falls Church (if you want to park) metro stations, and it's about a 20-minute drive from there.
It's recommended that you bring a bottle of water to cleanse your palate :)
Hope you can join!
Women’s Life & Money Conversations – Monthly Meetup
Hi everyone,
Join us for a relaxed and welcoming conversation about life, money, and everything in between.
This group is a space to connect with other women, share experiences, and talk openly about topics we don’t always get to discuss in everyday life—whether that’s financial goals, career transitions, investing, or simply navigating life decisions.
There’s no pressure and no preparation needed—just come as you are.
We’ll keep things informal and conversational. I’ll guide us through a few light prompts to get the discussion started, and everyone is welcome to share as much or as little as they’d like.
📍 We’ll meet at the Barnes & Noble café in One Loudoun
⏰ 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM
I’ll be seated in the café area—look for me wearing something red and a small “Meetup” sign on the table. Feel free to come over and say hello when you arrive.
If you’re on the fence, feel free to drop in—even for a short time 😊
Looking forward to meeting you!

Laughter "Yoga" Outdoors in Nottoway Park Vienna!
Laughter Yoga has no yoga poses and no jokes — just gentle inspiration to "laugh on purpose" or "laugh for no reason."
Laughter brings us the benefits of exercise and even some more — stress relief and a sense of connection. If you don't "feel like laughing," that's when you can often benefit the most!
It's a super-healthful (research-backed) practice which is also fun, and you can participate according to your own comfort zone! (you are welcome to get a bit zany, or not at all!)
It also includes some deep breathing and gentle movement. Find out more at [www.laughteryoga.org](http://www.laughteryoga.org/) .
I'm a certified Laughter Yoga leader (yes that is a thing!) and I do it both professionally and as a volunteer. (I'll be leading laughter at a marathon warmup the day before!)
Join me from 2 - 3 pm in Nottoway Park to try this practice and feel the benefits! The park is just 1 mile from the Vienna metro station.
I'll bring large blankets so we can sit on the ground if desired (or use a picnic table). All you need is a water bottle.
Please include your cell number so we can be sure to find each other. Hope to see you!
Crone's circle of women
Ceremonial clothing and daily reminders. Pulling yourself into your magical moments.
Welcome to all who identify as women—those in their wisdom years and those journeying toward them, embracing cycles of growth, transformation, and deepening self-awareness.
This space honors women celebrating the strength, creativity, and wisdom that unfold through each season of the feminine path.
In this circle, a crone is not defined by age but by attitude - someone who carries or seeks the wisdom, courage, and self-knowledge that comes with lived experience.
You are invited to join the Crone’s circle of women coming together to share wisdom, experience, and inspiration. This gathering offers a welcoming space for reflection, storytelling, and meaningful conversation about life’s journeys, challenges, and triumphs.
Whether you seek connection, personal growth, or simply a moment of peace among kindred spirits, this meeting is an opportunity to nurture your inner strength and celebrate the wisdom within us all.
Come as you are.
To guide and enrich our time together, we will be using books and other creative means—such as rituals ceremonies, journaling, art, and shared activities—to spark insight, deepen connection, and inspire personal growth.
Naming of the group will be done in circle.
Please bring a journal for our journey.
Books can be bought through Sticks and Stones.
The first book will be:
