Potrero John - Day Hike With Overnight Option
Potrero John is a box canyon in the Los Padres National Forest above Ojai. It was used by early settlers as a corral, since it had water and only the southern end had to be fenced to secure their livestock. Potrero John Creek runs south thru the canyon and joins Sespe Creek at the trailhead on Highway 33. The hike to Potrero John Camp is a moderate 2 1/4 miles and does require several creek crossings, but unless we get some early rain, we'll be able to hop across. We'll take our lunch break at Potrero John Camp under the shade of it's ancient oaks. There are no facilities or potable water sources on this route. Hikers should carry a minimum of 1.5 liters of water for the round trip. Potrero John Creek typically runs year round and descends steeply just above the camp, providing a good source of treatable water. If sufficient water is flowing at the time of this hike, we will demonstrate the use of water filtration and Steri-Pen to render stream water safe to drink. Hikers and campers will then have the opportunity to filter water for their own use. When you RSVP, please drop a note in comments to indicate whether you will be day hiking or overnighting.

What we're about

The Boondockers is a grass roots group of hikers, campers and backpackers who enjoy moderate hiking and meeting new folks. We're just a group of regular folks who like to experience our beautiful back country in good company. Our members are singles, seniors, moms, dads, kids and even a few dogs.
We schedule a "mini adventure" on the 3rd Saturday of each month. Usually a day hike, sometimes with an option to overnight at a remote camp.
We try to mix it up a bit by car camping three or four times each year, planning a "road trip" to another part of the state at least once each year and doing a few beach hikes and urban hikes as well.
We have no membership fees and no event fees. We pride ourselves on being as inclusive as possible. We take lots of "breathers" along the way and hike with the conviction that the journey is the reward, not getting to our destination by some arbitrary time. We aren't mountain climbers and we aren't in a hurry.
Sound like you kind of fun ? If so, we hope you'll come join us for our next outing.
Contact us at VCBOONDOCKERS@OUTLOOK.COM or just show up and join us.
We meet at The Collection at Riverpark at 8 A.M. on the 3rd Saturday of each month Our "meet up spot" is next to the Tesla charging stations, along the freeway fence line and west of the Container Store. We look forward to meeting you. VCB
