Street Portraiture Photo Meetup

Denver Union Station

Portrait Photography is a multi-varied discipline within photography as a whole. It is, at it's core, the creation of images involving people and their personalities. It can be shot in many different locations and for many different purposes, and that's what makes it so creatively unique and fun!

Join me in Downtown Denver for a winter portrait photowalk through the city. There are so many incredible places along 16th and 17th Street, as the light plays off of the buildings and creates a virtual concrete canyon to shoot in. The different light options that are created will make many various opportunities for fantastic portraits. I will have several experienced models for you to work with, combined with the location, you should be able to make some incredible images.

While this is not a workshop, I will still be doing some small instruction and offering tips as we walk. Understanding light sources, and how they relate to background, foreground, and your subject is something to be aware of, and I will be able to demonstrate different photographic solutions as well as help with your own compositions.

Recommended Gear

  • Camera Body
  • 50mm Lens
    *[masked]mm Lens
  • A portrait Focal length (If you do not have either of the above mentioned lenses
  • Comfortable Shoes

We will not be using flash during this photo walk so feel free to leave your speed light at home.

Dream Lake Dawn Hike

Rocky Mountain National Park

Join us for a dawn photographic hike to one of the most beautiful, accessible alpine lakes in Rocky Mountain National Park. The morning sunrays, combined with a frozen lake often dusted with snow, and the mighty spires of Hallett Peak to the west create an incredible vista for viewing and landscape photography.

Bring your wide-angle and telephoto lenses with you. There are many different compositions and angles to shoot at the lake and many different spots around the shore that make for beautiful photographs. A tripod will be a necessary tool as well, as early morning light is beautiful, but often requires longer exposure times to capture adequately.

Dawn is at 7:25AM in the park, necessitating the 5:30AM start time. It's going to be quite chilly of course so winter clothing is a necessity. Gloves are especially helpful, as operating a camera in those temps can be difficult. Because we will be hiking in the dark at the beginning, a headlamp is also necessary. Hiking in the snow also means that microspikes are an important backup to have in the pack when the trail gets slick or snowy. An insulated water container is another key item, as you want to stay hydrated but don't want your water freezing.

Bald Eagle Photo Meetup

Barr Lake State Park

Winter is coming and that means Bald Eagles are returning to Colorado. The state's lakes and reservoirs is the winter home for the these beautiful birds and make for some epic locations to view and photograph their incredible behavior.

One of these locations is Barr Lake State Park, in Brighton, CO. Every year 100+ Bald Eagles spend the winter on the (mostly) frozen reservoir. The park has a perfectly located gazebo just over a mile from the visitor center and parking lot. The gazebo is a great place to observe these magnificent birds and their behavior and also provides a great platform for a tripod and camera. I've spent many winters out on the lake, and this year I'd like to invite you to come along.

It's an early start no doubt, and definitely can be cold. The walk isn't too far but you definitely should provide yourself with a comfortable way to carry your gear, and save some space for food and water. There is also a $9 entry fee that is due at the gate. We will meet at the visitor center parking lot, and walk together as a group out to the gazebo. Birds are unpredictable subjects, so there is no limit on time for attendance. I will be out on the lake till about 11, perhaps later. Please feel free to stay as long as you are able.
