From AI-generated images to health disinformation, propagandists shape public opinion by distorting the truth. The impact of influencers and algorithms grows exponentially, making it more challenging to achieve a democratic consensus on many significant issues.

Join us on Thursday, August 21, at 7:00 p.m. ET for a Skeptical Inquirer Presents livestream with Renée DiResta. Her book, Invisible Rulers: The People Who Turn Lies into Reality, describes “a profound transformation in power and influence that is altering our politics, our local government, and even our relationships with friends and neighbors.” DiResta exposes the ways that society’s institutions are being undermined and offers new ideas to help in the fight for the promotion of reality-based information.

Renée DiResta is a social media researcher and the author of Invisible Rulers: The People Who Turn Lies into Reality. She studies adversarial abuse online, ranging from state actors running influence operations, to spammers and scammers, to issues related to child safety. In October 2024, she joined the Georgetown University McCourt School of Public Policy as an associate research professor. Prior to that, she was the Technical Research Manager at the Stanford Internet Observatory.
