Thursday Casual Clay Night

Looking to get your hands dirty on a Thursday night with some pottery? Pre-register and bring your friends for our Casual Clay evening. Acceptable from beginners that just want to try working with clay to more experienced potters wanting to hand build. Email clay@stickyartlab.com to register. Puppet Making Night

Puppet Making + Puppet Shows: Playful, Creative & Surprisingly Deep Come spend an afternoon making wonderfully weird, expressive puppets — and then putting them to work! We’ll start by creating our own hand puppets using felt, googly eyes, pom-poms, fabric, and lots of playful embellishments. No artistic skill required — the more personality your puppet has, the better. Then comes the fun part: puppet theater for grown-ups. We’ll divide into small groups of two or three and pull a surprise topic from a hat. Some may be lighthearted, while others may touch on very real parts of life — relationships, divorce, friendship, aging, dating, family, work, loneliness, reinvention, money, travel, or whatever else lands in the hat. Each group will have a little time to dream up a short puppet show inspired by their topic, then perform it for the rest of us. The idea isn’t to create polished theater. It’s to see what happens when we use humor, imagination, and a slightly ridiculous puppet to explore things we might normally talk about much more seriously. Expect lots of laughter, creativity, unexpected moments of insight, and probably some very opinionated puppets. No puppet-making or performing experience necessary. Shy people are absolutely welcome — somehow it’s much easier to say things when a puppet is doing the talking. All materials will be provided. Mini Mill Class @ Ace

This class will cover the basics of using the small CNC milling machine at Ace. Each student will be given a part to fabricate, and will learn mounting, locating edges, using a fly cutter, drilling, pocketing and chamfering. Participants can take their piece with them and finish fabricating it in the shop at a later time. Note that we will be using the Mach 3 software to control the mill directly rather than a generated file. Weave Your Own Ribs Style Foraging Basket (Berkeley)

We’ll begin with an introduction to gourds: what they are, how they grow, and how they’ve been traditionally used for vessels, tools, and art. Before any weaving begins, we’ll scrub and clean our gourds together, connecting to the full process from raw material to finished piece. Participants will then learn the basics of pine needle weaving and how to use it to embellish and transform a gourd.
