M is for.... Marilyn: A Portrait @ National Portrait Gallery

*“It's all make-believe, isn't it?”* (Marilyn Monroe) Join us at **Marilyn Monroe: A Portrait at the National Portrait Gallery** to explore the life, career and legacy of Marilyn Monroe through portraits created by some of the greatest photographers and artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Bringing together works by Andy Warhol, Pauline Boty, Marlene Dumas, James Gill, Rosalyn Drexler and Audrey Flack, alongside over 20 era-defining photographers, including Cecil Beaton, Philippe Halsman, Bernard of Hollywood, Sam Shaw, Richard Avedon and George Barris, the exhibition will foreground Monroe’s collaborative approach to image making and her creative agency. The exhibition will also include personal belongings such as books, scripts and clothes to enrich understanding of the woman behind the image. From the earliest ‘cheesecake’ pin-ups made when she was a young model named Norma-Jeane, to the most poignant final photographs taken on the beach in Santa Monica in 1962, Marilyn Monroe was one of the most photographed people in the world. T is for Thames River Police Museum (Wapping)

John Burns, the trade unionist once famously said of London’s river "Every drop is liquid history". In 1798 a newly formed body of police officers brought much needed law and order to that most historic of rivers. The Thames River Police was the first policing body ever to be set up. Its sole objective was the prevention and detection of crime on the Thames and it was to become the forerunner of many other police forces throughout the world. **Join us for a rare entrance into this museum as part of the ‘Wapping Shindig’ community event run by the Turks Head Charity. (Website under construction).** This small museum located at Wapping police station, which for more than two centuries has been the headquarters of the River Police. The museum is housed in the old carpenters workshop and is administered by the Thames Police Association. Portate da mangiare, da bere e qualche gioco da picnic. Unica regola: i drink devono essere Italiani. Vino, birra, succhi di frutta, acqua.....qualunque cosa da bere, purche' sia italiana! Naturalmente, considerando il tempo metereologico inglese, c'e' sempre la possibilita' che sia debba spostare il picinic a venerdi', ma speriamo di no! ;-) Si prega di controllare il sabato mattina... Summer Italian Picnic meet -up near Gloucester Gate Parkway entrance. The closest tube station is Camden Town. Time to polish up your Italian vocabulary (including the Italians) and join us for one of our wonderful picnics. After two meet-ups people need to pay or may find themselves removed from the group. The Picnic Bring food, drink and games to our summer picnic meet-up. The only rule- all drink must be Italian!
