Contenders #3: Sentimental Value

Contenders #3: Sentimental Value

Sat, Feb 21, 12:00 AM
From 50s+ Foreign Film Fans
4.6

RESERVE FREE TICKET HERE: https://www.scandinaviahouse.org/sh/films/sentimental-value-lux/ Sisters Nora (Renate Reinsve) and Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas) reunite with their estranged father, the charismatic Gustav (Stellan Skarsgård, in a remarkable performance), a once-renowned director who offers stage actress Nora a role in what he hopes will be his comeback film. When she declines, Gustav casts an up-and-coming young Hollywood star (Elle Fanning) instead, forcing the family to confront long-buried tensions as the striving outsider becomes entangled in their fraught dynamic. With *Sentimental Value*, Danish-Norwegian auteur Joachim Trier follows his critically acclaimed *The Worst Person in the World* (2021) with a magnetic comedy-drama about legacy, art, and the performances that bind—and divide—families. Trier’s insightful and captivating adult drama, which won the Grand Prix at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, furthers the writer-director’s piercing exploration of the frayed ties that bind us to one another and to our creative selves.

A Proper Film Club discusses "The Worst Person in the World"

A Proper Film Club discusses "The Worst Person in the World"

Sun, Feb 22, 9:00 PM
From A Proper Film Club

Our inaugural meetup of "**A Proper Film Club"** will be in the back room of **the Pine Box Rock Shop .** Please note **you must confirm here** first on meetup.com if you want to attend. This will be a **discussion-focused film** for people who love talking seriously (but accessibly) about movies—emotionally, intellectually, and critically. We’ll be meeting **Sunday, February 22nd, 2026** at 4pm. ### 🧠 How the Discussion Works This is **not a lecture or a passive talkback**. The core idea of A Proper Film Club is participation: * Attendees are encouraged to **bring a favorite (or most troubling) scene** * We’ll use a **projection screen** to revisit these clips so that you can discuss **why the scene affected you**—emotionally, intellectually, aesthetically, or ethically * Loving the film is *not* required; ambivalence and disagreement are welcome * We’ll screen brief clips for discussion purposes but **please come having already watched the film.** * ### 🎬 This Month’s Film ***The Worst Person in the World*** (2021), directed and co-written by **Joachim Trier**, starring **Renate Reinsve** A romantic comedy–drama that explores love, ambition, identity, and emotional contradiction in modern adulthood. 🏆 *Renate Reinsve won Best Actress at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival.* 🎥 *The film was nominated for Best International Feature Film and Best Original Screenplay at the 94th Academy Awards.* ### ### 🎞 What We’re Exploring We’ll try and keep the conversation organic but some themes we might explore include: * Emotional response vs. intellectual interpretation * Character empathy, frustration, and moral ambiguity * Narrative structure, time jumps, and point of view * Gender, creativity, ambition, and “likability” in modern cinema If you have **suggestions for future films**, feel free to post them in the group chat—we’re building the calendar collaboratively. Whether you’re a cinephile, filmmaker, writer, performer, or just someone who loves deep film conversations, you’re very welcome.
