This Precious Human Life – A One Day Retreat
Join us for ‘This Precious Human Life,’ a meaningful one-day retreat (in-person or online) inspired by the profound teachings contained in the Four Revolutions in Outlook (also known as the Four Thoughts that Turn the Mind).
We’ll explore meditations, contemplations and teachings on the rarity and preciousness of our human existence, and on the transient nature of life (impermanence). There will also be discussions on the reality of our suffering (duhkha) and actions and their consequences (karma).
Through reflection and practice, this day aims to deepen your appreciation of the preciousness of your life and the opportunities you have, and inspire a powerful boost for authentic Dharma practice.
Everyone is welcome to attend this day retreat, particularly those exploring the Buddhist path, whether for the first time or as a seasoned practitioner. These themes are regarded as indispensable in all schools of Tibetan Buddhism and are taught as the common, outer preliminaries for more advanced practice.
**About our London Day Retreats**
These Buddhist meditation day retreats, which can be attended online or in-person, offer the opportunity to discover what meditation and Buddhist mind training can do for mental well-being and to meet and share with like-minded people.
The sessions are perfect for both beginners and those with more experience. We hope to provide you with the foundation for developing your own practice, and help you develop tools that reduce stress, anxiety and worry; and nurture a happier, calmer, and more positive approach to life.
**Booking & Donations**
There are limited in-person places available for this day retreat. We will also be live-streaming and recording the teachings on Zoom. Please book in advance by using the following link: [(HYBRID) This Precious Human Life - A One Day Retreat - Samadhi](https://www.samadhi.org.uk/events/this-precious-human-life-london/)
We embrace a sliding scale policy for their event fees, guided by the Buddhist principle of generosity and inclusivity. There are suggested donations to help cover event costs and support our ongoing activities, for the benefit of all. However, we firmly believe that financial constraints should never be a barrier to participation. If the suggested amount is beyond your means, please contribute what you can — every offering helps us sustain and continue providing our events and courses for the collective good.
Practical Philosophy Meetup - London 🇬🇧
**🏛️ WHAT'S PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY ABOUT?**
Practical Philosophy is a weekly meet-up that brings critical thinkers together for an opportunity to dive deep on a topic, practice communicating, and building a community. All with no ‘official’ philosophy knowledge required! 😎
Practical Philosophy is based on the idea that philosophy should be accessible to all, and not something reserved only for academics. Each week we choose a topic, and the goal is to use the conversation to develop our critical thinking and communication as we explore that topic.
The goal is to help develop our Critical Thinking, Communication, and Community 🙌
📓 **HOW DOES IT WORK?**
Each week, we pick one topic and discuss it. The topic for the week is shared, generally in the [Whatsapp group](https://chat.whatsapp.com/Ja2H9lXYtWX8RdCKHw6qNK), along with jump-off points to get the conversation going.
When groups get bigger than 7-8 people, it’s important that we break into smaller groups. This way we are able to maintain a conversational flow as opposed to having our meetups feel like a discourse or lecture.
**General Meeting Agenda**
Each Practical Philosophy meet-up follows this general timeline:
* 13:45-14:00 - People arrive and chat, get to know each other before the ‘official' start.
* 14:00-14:05 - Meeting introduction, explanation of Practical Philosophy and the topic for the week, read the guidelines and the overview so attendees know what to expect in terms of timelines.
* 14:05-14:45 - Break into small groups - introduce yourselves and general thoughts on the topic, open discussion afterwards. At this point the group can review the ‘jump-off’ questions as needed, but they are just there to help guide the conversation. It’s not obligatory to answer them.
* 14:45 - We do a group conclusion of the things we discussed, and then we typically take a photo and go on our way :) If you don't want to be in the group photo, there's no pressure, it's just a way to close out the meeting. You are free to walk around Calthorpe's Community Gardens afterwards.
**🧧PRICING?**
Practical Philosophy Club is FREE to attend, and we operate on donations.
Calthorpe Cabin costs £40 per hour to rent.
If you'd like to donate to support the cost of the location, that helps keep our group self-sustaining. Donations are 100% voluntary, but your contribution is appreciated! QR codes to donate and a donation jar will be present.
Calthorpe charges £4 per person for tea's and coffees and are paid by the individual should they wish to have them.
**💛 WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY**
🗣 “I feel like Philosophy Club helps someone build their own belief system through a series of perspectives while not promoting what’s right and wrong” - Ekam
🗣 “I got hooked from day 1 (the topic was authority) and felt it was the right place for me. I feel it is a place where people can go to learn and discuss new perspectives and increase critical thinking and community by interacting with people who might challenge your point of views but at the same time encourage you to have openness and mind flexibility.” - Daniel
**🤓 FAQ**
* What will we talk about? What's the topic?
The topic for the week is shared every Sunday in the Whatsapp group. We try to add the topic to the comment section on this event page as well but if you don’t see it, the topic and the jump-off points will be in our [Whatsapp](https://chat.whatsapp.com/Ja2H9lXYtWX8RdCKHw6qNK).
* Do I need to study or read anything to attend?
No preparation is necessary. This isn’t a study of other thinkers. We want to know what YOU think about the topic, not what an old philosopher thought. If you have a perspective from a religion or a school of thought to share, throw it on the table and we’ll discuss it, but it's not required.
* Is there a specific philosophy that Practical Philosophy is focused on?
The goal of our meet-ups is to not have dogmatic discussions, and flex our critical thinking muscles. Because of this, we want to hear from every realm of thought, and don't study a particular school.
* Is it mostly men that attend?
Surprisingly, no! Although philosophy is seen as a Candelabra affair in a dark room with a bunch of guys, our Practical Philosophy meetups are generally 50/50 between genders, and we don’t meet in any dark rooms.
* Can I come alone?
Of course you can, we encourage it :)
* Can I be late?
Please don't be! We do have a 15 minute grace period where we allow people to funnel in while we hang out, but after that if you arrive too late, it disrupts the flow of the conversation.
* Where do you meet?
The location is posted in Meetup and our [Whatsapp](https://chat.whatsapp.com/Ja2H9lXYtWX8RdCKHw6qNK) group for this location. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you join the Whatsapp group! If you want to know what other cities have a Practical Philosophy Club, you can see our chapters on our [website](https://www.practicalphilosophy.club/practical-philosophy-locations/).
🤝**POLICY**
To respect our members privacy, we ask that no one privately message a member without first getting explicit consent. (This looks like speaking in person and being asked to message privately.) Contacting or texting other participants without prior consent is not permitted and may result in removal from the group. Practical Philosophy reserves the right to enforce this policy at its discretion to maintain a safe and respectful environment.
**PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY - Making Philosophy Available To All.** ✨

February's second Science Fiction & Fantasy meetup.
Would you enjoy a relaxed evening chatting about distant galaxies, epic quests, and everything in between? If so, we’d love to meet you.
Our next gathering takes place on **Saturday 28th February from 6pm** at **The Mad Hatter**, just by Blackfriars Bridge. Drop in, say hello, and join us for a drink.
We’re a long‑running group that’s been meeting since **1998**—long before meetup sites were even a thing. Over the years we’ve done it all: celebrity meet‑and‑greets, convention trips, RPG campaigns, cinema outings, LARPs, and plenty more.
These pub nights are all about easygoing conversation and connecting with fellow Sci‑Fi and Fantasy fans. To help break the ice, we’ll be running a light‑hearted team quiz at **8.30pm**.
There’s no fee to attend—just pay for whatever food or drink you order at the venue.
Let's Discuss... Intuition
Intuition is "... the deep thing in us, the reasoned argument is but a surface exhibition."(William James, The Varieties of Religious Experience)
Intuition has the answer to the most important questions in life. questions like: What is my purpose? How do I find a meaning in my existence? Should I make a major career change? Should I end a relationship?
How does valuing reason over intuition effect peoples life?
How can we bring back our intuition?
How does reason trump intuition?

Helping to cultivate balance through Ayurveda, Yoga and Sound healing.
Hi this session will be divided into three parts. The first a brief introduction to Ayurveda and self care tips related to creating balance for busy working individuals or people that can afford to stop and relax more. The second part will be a guided yoga session with modifications, a yoga mat blanket and pillow would be useful. The final section is a sound healing with Tibetan bowls, kochi and a seed shaker to cultivate nature relaxation. Some of the instruments emulate rain and natural sounds which help to activate the parasympathetic nervous system. Details are below of the joining link via Google meet. Thanks, Tess ❤️❤️🙏🇹🇭🇬🇧

Sahaja Yoga is a unique form of meditation that will enable you to connect with your Inner Self, establishing a higher awareness within you resulting in a deep feeling of peace, calmness, balance, and joy.
It is a tangible practical **experience**: Sahaja Yoga is “Subtle, Simple and Real”.
It was founded by H.H. Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi ( 1923-2011) and has at its core the process of Self Realisation: connecting with your real Self through the awakening of the dormant energy in our sacrum bone called Kundalini who takes us into the deep peaceful state of thoughtless awareness.
In the class, we will go through the process of Self Realisation and learn how to achieve the state of meditation effortlessly. Also, we will learn about balancing our subtle system, diagnosing and solving our problems, and meditating at home.
Sahaja Yoga helps all aspects of our life: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual, it is an extraordinary method, unique from any other types of meditations as it uses our own energy Kundalini who can correct our chakras, balance us, and take us to a much higher and deeper state of awareness.
We do not need mats, we sit on chairs, it is easy and simple, Sahaja means spontaneous in Sanskrit, and it is for all cultures, ages, religions, and backgrounds.
There are free meetings all over London, the UK, and more than 100 countries.
If you are looking for well-being, harmony, and solving your problems, if you want to get out of confusion, and/or mental health problems, if you are looking for answers then you are in the right place.
Come along and try, no need to sign up, beginners are welcome anytime.

Maghotsava: Brahmo Samaj
## About the Event
The Brahmo Samaj Maghotsava is the annual festival of the Brahmo Samaj, commemorating the founding of the first Brahmo congregation by Raja Rammohun Roy in January 1830 and the consecration of the original Brahmo Sabha prayer hall.
Celebrated each year in the month of Magh (January–February), it marks a renewal of the Samaj’s core principles: monotheism, rational spirituality, social reform, and the rejection of caste and ritualism.
The festival typically includes devotional music, readings from the Brahmo scriptures, discussions on ethical living, and community gatherings that honour the movement’s legacy of progressive, inclusive faith.
All are welcome to attend - please RSVP for catering purposes!

We’re off to Norfolk! The seals in Norfolk are truly one of Britain's most special sights. Without any doubt, they're an incredible WOW factor and one that you must see!
On this day hike, we'll walk along the top of the sand dunes and enjoy stunning panoramic views across the North Sea. On our way, we'll pass the much-loved grey seal colony at Horsey Beach, which draws thousands of visitors each year, **particularly between November and March**, when the seals come ashore to breed. There are literally hundreds and hundreds of seals and their pups stretching for as far as the eye can see!
The whole walk is in the Broads National Park – one of fifteen national parks in the UK. You'll discover its iconic windmills, navigable waterways and broads (man-made, shallow lakes). With over 125 miles of lock-free waterways, the Norfolk Broads have more miles of waterway than Venice or Amsterdam, and are an extremely popular boating holiday destination! Locals like to call the Broads “the Venice of the East”.
💪 This walk is **suitable for all abilities** – it is almost entirely flat and done at a very gentle pace to allow us enjoy the nature and take plenty of pictures.
**HIKE HIGHLIGHTS**
* Watch seals and their young from a close distance at Horsey Gap, home to one of the biggest colonies of grey seals in Britain.
* Take a gentle stroll over the vast open expanse of the golden sand dunes of Winterton Beach – a Nature Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest. The area is a veritable haven for birds and all kinds of wildlife and is widely regarded as having the best sand dunes in Norfolk.
* See the spectacular Horsey Windpump – the youngest and largest windpump in the Norfolk Broads. It was built in 1912 to pump water out from the surrounding land so that it could be used for farming.
* Discover Horsey Mere, often regarded as one of the most beautiful of the northern broads and famous for its internationally important wildlife.
* Walk the newly opened stretch of the England Coast Path – a new National Trail around all of England's coast, which once completed will be the longest coastal walking route in the world (4,500 kilometres in length!).
**DISTANCE & DIFFICULTY**
Distance: 6 miles (10km).
Ascent: 50m.

Book Bans, Education, and Historical Truth
Across the UK, debates are intensifying about what children should be taught in schools — from how Britain’s colonial past is presented, to how race, migration, and identity are discussed in the classroom. Concerns about “political bias,” calls to remove certain books from reading lists, and pressure to sanitise difficult parts of history raise important questions about who controls knowledge and whose stories are told.
Who gets to decide what counts as “truth” in education?
How should schools approach Britain’s history of empire, slavery, and racial inequality in ways that are honest, evidence-based, and inclusive?
How can we encourage critical thinking about history and society without relying on religious narratives or moral frameworks?
Join Association of Black Humanists for an open and thoughtful discussion on education, historical truth, and the importance of intellectual freedom. This is a participatory session rather than a lecture — there will be no expert panel. Your perspectives, questions, and experiences will shape the conversation as we explore these issues together.
All are welcome.
**Date: Saturday, 28th February 2026**
**Time: Please arrive on time at 2.45pm**
**Venue: Pembury Community Centre**

Humanist Program: Fighting the Efforts to Insert Religion into Public Education
The Humanist Monthly Program is our longest running event and still a community favorite. In the old days it used to be called "Going to HCCO" and we still like to think of it as our flagship event.
Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk.
Our March speakers are Molly Gaines and Zack Parrish, co-organizers of the Secular Education Association:
They will share their story of how a small group of Ohio parents grew into a national organization tracking released-time religious instruction and other church–state issues in public schools. The presentation will cover SEA’s early wins and hard lessons, what we’re seeing nationally right now, and how local advocates can play a meaningful role in protecting public education. Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of the landscape — and practical ways to get involved.
Going forward our meetings will be hybrid. You can meet us in-person or attend online

Contra dance March 21 (First Unitarian Universalist Church) note new time!
# **Band and caller TBA**
Beginner lesson at 1:30, regular dancing begins at 2:00 pm
NOTE THAT WE ARE TEMPORARILY DANCING IN THE AFTERNOON INSTEAD OF EVENING. Dance with us in the afternoon then you can still go out in the evening!
**Sponsor: All Soles Contra and Square Dancing, First Unitarian Universalist Church, 93 W. Weisheimer Rd., Columbus OH 43214**
WHAT IS CONTRA DANCING? Picture the Grand Ball scenes like you’ve seen in period films such as “Pride and Prejudice”, where the dancers are lined up in long lines, across from each other. That’s English Country Dancing, the predecessor of contra dancing. Now, add moves like “swing your partner” and “do-si-do,” like you’ve seen in square dancing. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alá “Riverdance.” Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude. THAT’s Contra Dancing!
Wear cool and comfortable clothes (you will get warm) and clean shoes that won't mark up our nice wood floor.
Be sure to come for the beginner's lesson from 1:30 - 2:00, followed by dancing 2:00 - 430. All dances are taught; we will help you learn! Beginners always welcome, no need to bring a partner.
Cost is $10.00 adults, $5.00 ages 12-26. Under 12 free. Free parking in church lot.
Please bring your own refillable water bottle.
Sunday Brunch
Sleep in on Sundays. When you've had your fill of pajama-time, roll out and have some tasty brunch with your fellow Humanists!

"The Enchanted Greenhouse" by Sarah Beth Durst
Come join us for coffee at Matari Coffee to discuss our March book, "The Enchanted Greenhouse"!
Book description:
Terlu Perna broke the law because she was lonely. She cast a spell and created a magically sentient spider plant. As punishment, she was turned into a wooden statue and tucked away into an alcove in the North Reading Room of the Great Library of Alyssium.
This should have been the end of her story . . . Yet one day, Terlu wakes in the cold of winter on a nearly-deserted island full of hundreds of magical greenhouses. She’s starving and freezing, and the only other human on the island is a grumpy gardener. To her surprise, he offers Terlu a place to sleep, clean clothes, and freshly baked honey cakes—at least until she’s ready to sail home.
But Terlu can’t return home and doesn’t want to—the greenhouses are a dream come true, each more wondrous than the next. When she learns that the magic that sustains them is failing—causing the death of everything within them—Terlu knows she must help. Even if that means breaking the law again.
This time, though, she isn’t alone. Assisted by the gardener and a sentient rose, Terlu must unravel the secrets of a long-dead sorcerer if she wants to save the island—and have a fresh chance at happiness and love.
Omnipresent Atheists Weekly Meetup (2nd Tues)
Jimmy V's Grill & Pub in Grandview Heights. You are responsible for your own meal/drinks. We usually don't have any agenda other than eat, drink and talk. :) If the weather is nice we will be on the back patio, otherwise we are in the cigar room.
This group has been meeting every Tuesday evening for over a decade. Many attendees do not RSVP on meetup. Please don't let the small number here discourage you. Anyone/everyone is welcome to come. We'd love to have you join us.
COTA bus #5 comes to W. 5th and Wyandotte Rd. And it's a minute walk to the restaurant.

Did you know that there are atheists everywhere?!?! You may not know it, but we are! We're in your schools, diners, police force, military, government, and some are even still in your churches! So come and join us and meet other local atheists, along with agnostics, heathens, humanists, skeptics, and anyone else who's 'hell bound'!
Vision: a Central Ohio that accepts atheism as a viable alternative in all areas of public and private life.
Mission: grow, support, and provide community for atheists in Central Ohio.
Social meetings held most Tuesdays at a local pub/restaurant at 7:00 PM (and often into the wee hours). Attendees call themselves agnostics, skeptics, humanists, non-theists, deists or even theists. All attendees are welcome but should support our vision.
Atheists of Columbus (AoC) is part of Omnipresent Atheists (OA). AoC members are invited to join this OA meetup and/or OA Facebook group ( https://www.facebook.com/groups/omnipresentatheists/ ) but are free to continue conversations on the AoC Facebook group ( https://www.facebook.com/groups/columbusatheists/ ). AoC was founded in 2012 as a networking, social group for Central Ohio area humanists, skeptics, atheists, agnostics, nonbelievers, freethinkers, and the curious. It was a member of Columbus CoR and held weekly meetings, mostly on Fridays, for several years but then operated as an online only group for some time. In November 2018, Omnipresent Atheists (OA), a group that routinely meets on Tuesdays, invited AoC to merge.
