Classes focus on practical, real-world fundamentals taught in a safe, technical, and highly supportive environment. Youโ€™ll learn how to **escape common holds**, **apply effective submissions**, and **understand live positional strategy** \-\- the same leverage\-based system used in modern BJJ and [Mixed Martial Arts](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mixed_martial_arts) (MMA), adapted for everyday people. This **gi class** takes place every **Monday** and **Wednesday** and includes **one hour of guided instruction** followed by **one hour of optional open training** (live rounds, drilling, review, and research). **NEW GAME LOCATION at The Board Room** Let's play board games. Not the ones your ancestors played but the really cool ones of the new millennium. We play everything from fun, social games to light to heavy strategy games. Don't know how to play? Not a problem - we're happy to teach. It's a great chance to learn new games or play your favorites with non-competitive people who like to laugh. You can build a railroad, eradicate a plague, or explore the far reaches of the galaxy in one evening. While many will bring their own games, you can show up gameless and still play. We play at the Board Room in Clarendon on Wednesday from 6:30-10:00. It's within walking distance from the Clarendon metro. **Find us in the far left by the fermentation tanks.** If that area is reserved for a private event, look for us in the middle. Look for a group that has containers and carrying bags with multiple games. We're very fortunate to have this great venue for our game nights and they take care of us for 3-1/2 hours, so please spend a minimum of $10 on food or drink and tip generously (at the very least $2, even if 20% of your bill would be $1). For the Wednesday run, let's meet at 1750 Crystal Dr (Entrance by Morton's Steakhouse) before walking over to the Crystal City Water Park and run on the Mt. Vernon Trail alongside the scenic Potomac River. LOCATION: Meet at 1750 Crystal Dr (Entrance by Morton's Steakhouse). Link to location on map: http://i.imgur.com/3yN0lwN.jpg NOTES: Photos taken during the event may end up on Instagram, Meetup, Strava and similar platforms. Let's meet at 6:50 PM, leaving by 7:00 PM. We will do 50 minutes, so 25 minutes out and 25 minutes back. You're welcome to do more if you'd like. Just before the run we decide whether we'll go NORTH (DC) or SOUTH (Old Town) on the trail. Once we're done, we meet back up at the Crystal City Water Park area. After the run please feel free to hangout and socialize with the group or join us at Highline RxR in Crystal City (National Landing) for a beverage and/or food. https://g.co/kgs/AErMQZ All paces are welcome! We run by time, not speed so bring a watch to monitor your time and turn around at the halfway time point. If you need to run/walk, that's ok! We average anywhere between 7-13 minute/per mile pace. Metro: Crystal City on Blue/Yellow lines, 2 blocks from metro exit. Parking: There is plenty of free parking inside the garage directly across from the Crystal City Water Park. Ready for an overnight retreat? Our weekend retreats are a great place to start if youโ€™ve established a mindfulness practice or taken a mindfulness class and youโ€™re ready to take it to the โ€œnext level.โ€ A weekend retreat is also a wonderful way to renew and refresh a long-standing practice. Our lives as mindfulness practitioners deepen when weโ€™re ready to enter into the sustained practice of retreat. This residential retreat will be held mostly in silence at the beautiful [Samish Island Campground and Retreat Center](https://www.campsamish.org/) and will include a series of gently guided mindfulness practices including sitting meditation, walking meditation, gentle yoga, and the body scan. Informative talks on the process of being on retreat, mindfulness, stress reactivity, and other topics will be presented by the instructor. Many people join groups like this and never (or rarely) show up after weeks or months. If you join and never really come, we will eventually remove you from the group as a courtesy to our members. Why? Because limiting group conversations (on the app) to regular members makes communication and planning much easier. Also, while it may be rare, it protects members from people who join because they are interested in following a person instead of having a real interest in our group. If you get removed, it is just because you havenโ€™t come, and we follow this protocol as a courtesy to our regular game players.

As a follow-up to our macro class and to get ready for our May and June Field Shoots, we are going to have a macro training "class." I will attempt to work through a number of macro shoots with the group. Those with cameras can try to shoot the same subjects I am shooting. We will start with some small objects and work our way down to smaller and smaller ones. As we photograph each subject, we will consider depth of field, focal plane management, subject composition, background, and lighting. I have no idea how many subjects we will get through, but we will give it our best shot (pun intended!). Bring your camera, whatever macro gear you might have, a tripod if you have one, whatever lighting you may have, etc. This will really be an exercise in seeing what you have, me showing you some ways to approach the subjects, and seeing what works!
