Codeaholics 2026.1 with ExpressVPN
Welcome back to Codeaholics! We will kickstart our 2026 collaborating with ExpressVPN! **Talk#1: The Pain of Processing PDFs** by **Angus Cheng** Reading PDFs is very difficult, here's what I've learnt over the last five years running a SaaS that processes PDFs **Talk#2: Why does ExpressVPN switch from C to Rust for Lightway’s code?** by **Thomas Leong** We built Lightway from scratch in a quest to offer a VPN protocol that serves the needs of VPN users in a modern, mobile world—one that’s fast, secure, and reliable. Since launching Lightway five years ago, we’ve had it open-sourced and audited, as well as implementing key upgrades. We have just rolled out a new version of Lightway to users—one that sees our pioneering VPN protocol rewritten in Rust programming language. For this technical talk, we wanted to take a moment to discuss some of the more technical reasons behind the changes we’ve made and dive into the benefits of Rust over C, the language we originally used for Lightway code.

Queer Book Club #33 – ‘Sisters of the Vast Black’ by Lina Rather
Join us for dinner and discussion about queer books! For our next book, we will be reading **‘Sisters of the Vast Black’** by **Lina Rather**. **Blurb** **The sisters of the Order of Saint Rita captain their living ship into the reaches of space in Lina Rather's debut novella, *Sisters of the Vast Black*.** **Blurb** Years ago, Old Earth sent forth sisters and brothers into the vast dark of the prodigal colonies armed only with crucifixes and iron faith. Now, the sisters of the Order of Saint Rita are on an interstellar mission of mercy aboard Our Lady of Impossible Constellations, a living, breathing ship which seems determined to develop a will of its own. When the order receives a distress call from a newly-formed colony, the sisters discover that the bodies and souls in their care—and that of the galactic diaspora—are in danger. And not from void beyond, but from the nascent Central Governance and the Church itself. **The Plan** 19:30 Meeting @ the restaurant 19:45 Dinner & discussion 21:15 Choosing a book for April 21:30 End **Dinner** The name of the restaurant will be announced in the WhatsApp group chat. **What to do** 1\. Kayaking Essentials at Cheung Chau
Kayaking Essentials at Cheung Chau
This is an introductory session for people who are complete beginners or fairly new to kayaking. We will begin with learning the essential kayak parts and equipment. We will also learn and practice simple strokes, how to enter and exit the kayak and how to cope with a capsize or emergency. It will be a full and busy day and you will get wet! Please do not sign up unless you commit to being there. We can not run the training session when people drop out with short notice. Our 48 hour rule does apply. Please arrive with HKD 300 in cash as payment for the hire of equipment used in this training session. Please also bring the following - - Sturdy closed-toed shoes that can get wet that will be worn at all times throughout the training session (Crocs DO NOT qualify. Old sneakers/trainers are OK. NO flip flops). - A packed lunch - A refillable water bottle (there is clean, drinkable tap water at the kayak base). We strongly discourage the use of packaged water in disposable bottles (I.e. Bonaqua, Evian, etc) - Swimwear, hat, sunglasses and sun protection (long sleeve rash guard or UV resistant shirt highly recommended). - Optional: change of clothes & towel for post-session shower. Following training and practice sessions of all of the above, a short paddle trip MAY be possible to apply all that has been learned. Following the completion of this session, you may participate in 'Beginner' rated paddle trips that SK&F may offer. New members with previous paddling experience will be assessed during this session to determine on a case-by-case basis what level paddling trip they will be eligible for.
Cycling: Tai Wai MTR to Tai Mei Tuk (Plover Dam)
Cycling: Tai Wai MTR to Tai Mei Tuk (Plover Dam)
**Cycling: Tai Wai MTR to Tai Mei Tuk (Plover Dam)** **Difficulty Level:** 2.5 out of 5 **Distance:** 50 km **Time:** 5-6 hours **Bike Rental Fee:** About 200 HKD for the Whole Day **Description:** This event is "geared" for individuals that enjoy cycling on fully-paved and bike-only paths (no vehicles). The only time we'll be on a surface with vehicles is when we need to cross the streets using the safety strips and the traffic lights. The plan is to cycle from Tai Wai to Plover Dam and back. The roundtrip course is 50 km. If you opt for a shorter distance (25 km), it is possible to leave your bike at the halfway point and then transport back to Tai Wai via bus. **Important: It is your responsibility to select a bike that is a "right fit" for you and it is your responsibility to decide if you will be wearing a bike helmet.** **Some highlights:** We'll ride along the bike path that hugs the Shing Mun River and continue riding along the coastline of Tolo Harbour towards Tai Mei Tuk and Plover Dam. **What to bring:** * 2 liters of water (water available for sale along the way) * Snacks to eat along the way (sandwich, fruits, nuts, etc) * Comfortable shoes * Sunglasses * Headgear (cap/hat) * Sunscreen * Bug Spray * In case of Rain: plan accordingly **Toilets:** There are plenty of toilets along the way. **Stores:** There are several cafes along the way and at the halfway point there are full-service restaurants where we can all sit down and enjoy our lunch. **Meeting Point:** Tai Wai MTR Station - Exit A **Time:** 10:00 am (SHARP) **IMPORTANT:** Out of respect to the members that arrive on time, we will only be able to wait a maximum of 5 minutes. Should you arrive after 10:05 am, I will no longer be answering phone calls or responding to messages as I need to give my time and attention to those that have arrived on time.

The War Room: Intro to War Gaming at The Arcane Foundry ($15 Regiment)
**⚔️ Introduction to Wargaming & Painting Miniature Soldiers at The Arcane Foundry ⚔️** Join me in **The War Room at [The Arcane Foundry](https://share.google/S5i6DYJnJteHWeKtd)** for a laid-back evening of hobby talk and tabletop fun! For just **$15**, you’ll get a **3D-printed regiment of 20 high quality resin models** of your choice to paint — a **$40 value!** Bring your creativity, relax, and let’s make something awesome together. **Choose one from Below:** * 20 Orc Warriors * 20 Empire Soldiers * 20 Dwarf Warriors * 20 Elf Spearmen Step into a world where strategy meets artistry — and where every painted figure tells a story of battle, honor, and imagination. Join **Daclaud** at **The Arcane Foundry** for an evening that introduces newcomers and enthusiasts alike to the timeless craft of **tabletop wargaming** and **miniature painting**. My own journey began with a fascination for fantasy — knights in armor, grim and hardened warriors, and monstrous creatures locked in epic battle. That passion led me to **Dungeons & Dragons**, where I painted my first **Basic Heroes set** and felt the spark that comes from bringing a character to life in miniature form. Not long after, I discovered **Warhammer Fantasy** and **Warhammer 40,000**, and I was hooked. The vision of vast armies clashing across the table — each unit meticulously painted, each story unfolding through dice and imagination — became my creative obsession. During this event, we’ll explore the **origins of wargaming**, from its early military simulations to the richly detailed worlds of modern tabletop battle systems. You’ll learn how to **build and customize your own armies**, paint your first figures, and experience the joy of turning strategy and storytelling into a hands-on art form. Whether you’re drawn by the lore, the hobby, or the thrill of commanding miniature legions, this introduction will open the gates to a world that has captivated hobbyists for generations. **🎨 RSVP today and join us at The Arcane Foundry — where every brushstroke and battle tells a story.**

COUNT RMH Housewarmer Volunteering (Ronald McDonald House)
Some trained COUNT volunteers work together once a month at RMH (http://www.rmhc-centralohio.org/volunteer.php) as Housewarmers (usually on the 1st Sunday from 1 – 5 PM). Some schedule other shifts at their convenience. You may try this out with less fuss by following a "Fast track" or go through the normal process. Fast track • Arrange a time to shadow a COUNT volunteer. Call Dave Nohle at 614-268-9558 (cell). • Show up and try it out. • Complete application, etc. later. Normal process • Complete an online application (http://rmhc-centralohio.org/volunteer/). • Attend orientation in advance. • At orientation you will complete forms agreeing to keep family/patient info private and allowing a background check and tour the facility. • Complete one training shift. Daily shifts are: morning 9 AM - 1 PM, afternoon 1 - 5 PM and evening 5 - 9 PM. • Schedule shifts online using the on the RMH scheduling system (http://www.volgistics.com/ex/portal.dll/?FROM=32895). The Ronald McDonald House (RMH) provides housing and meals for families with sick children. The Columbus RMH is the largest in the world with 137 rooms. COUNT has been volunteering there since May 2014. Housewarmers work with RMH guests to provide a home-like environment - greet, assist with family needs, answer phones, give tours, assist with checkin/checkout, prepare guest rooms after checkout, clean facility, laundry, restock supplies and staff the front desk. RMH Housewarmers volunteer at least one four-hour shift a month. All Housewarmers must complete an application and agree to a background check before they can be full fledged volunteers.

In Person Event: The Secrets to Mental Health
In Person Event: The Secrets to Mental Health
Mental Health, how do you understand it? How can you improve it? How do you get rid of stress, anxiety and uncertainty? These emotions are buried deep in your reactive mind. Find out what the reactive mind is, and in the process find yourself. Have you ever suffered from a traumatic experience, a deep loss or been through a painful breakup? Has your ability to communicate suffered as a result? And after that, even though you "moved on" did you find that things were never quite the same? Have you ever looked at childhood photos, or reminisced your early life and wondered where that happiness and spark went? Are your emotions out of your own control? Have you ever felt, even if you aren’t aware of it, that possibly you are getting in your own way of your happiness and success? How does this affect your self-confidence? Find out what is at the root of all stress, anxiety, depression and self-doubt. Find out how and why you hold yourself back from achieving your goals and having the life you have dreamed of. As soon as you learn what is at the root of these unwanted conditions, you’ll see it is something you can DO something about. You will not be labeled or categorized at this MeetUp. This group is hosted by the Dianetics and Scientology Life Improvement Center of Central Ohio.
