Cine Fan - Out of Africa 《走出非洲》
* Dir: Sydney Pollack * USA, 1985, English, Swahili, 161mins, DCP * Cast: Robert Redford, Meryl Streep, Klaus Maria Brandauer Even against the vast sprawling landscapes of the sub-Saharan plains, Meryl Streep dominates the screen in Sydney Pollack’s defiantly old-fashioned epic. Adapted from Karen Blixen’s celebrated memoir, the film follows a fiercely independent Danish aristocrat, as she moves to British East Africa to honour a marriage of convenience, only to embark on a passionate affair with a charismatic big game hunter. Battling everything from lions and syphilis to the outbreak of the first World War, Blixen remains forthright in her intentions yet compassionate towards the indigenous people, even as the men who swarm around her strive to carve it up in the name of King and Country. An unabashedly romantic rendering of colonial life, yet it remains a beautiful portrait of a woman's awakening and transformation. Academy Awards: 7 awards including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay 31/5 (Sun): Film talk with Joyce Yang Ticket Price: Standard ticket HK$109 ($9 handling charge included) (No senior ticket) \*RSVP is to be accompanied by immediate payment to Ronda Cheung by PayMe or FPS. One Shot Saturday (Tabletop RPGs)
One Shot Saturday (Tabletop RPGs)
WHAT IS ONE-SHOT SATURDAY? It's a weekly meet-up in Sheung Wan/Central, focusing on indie games and single-session games (one-shots). 而家所有游戏係英文嘅但如果你要嚟玩中文游戏,我哋會無任歡迎。只要湊啱玩家就行! You can drop in and play at any One-Shot Saturday – you do not need to have played in a previous session or commit to playing again. Whether you've played an RPG before or not, you're welcome to join us. Please arrive on time as once the games begin it becomes difficult to properly introduce latecomers. Join the conversation, make plans, suggest games to play, etc. — Facebook group: [https://www.facebook.com/groups/oneshotsaturdays/](https://www.facebook.com/groups/oneshotsaturdays/) \*\*\* WHAT IS A TABLETOP RPG? It's a game in which you never know where the next stop will be, because it’s all down to the decisions you and your fellow players make. Usually one person is the Game Master (or "GM"). Everyone else will be players, taking the role of the characters in the game. The players get to say what their characters say, think, and do. The GM describes everything else in the world. Then... we play to find out what happens. The game is a conversation: I say something, then you reply, maybe someone else chimes in. We talk about what's happening to the characters we imagine and the world around them. We also talk about the rules, which help us decide what happens next if the next step is in doubt. The rules differ from game to game: some use dice to shape the story, others use cards or something else. It's always a conversation, though.

Jules and Jim, the Book!
Jules and Jim, the Book!
By popular demand, the group wanted to read and discuss the semi-autobiographical novel by Henri-Pierre Roche, that inspired the Truffaut movie we watched last year. The book is available through the Columbus Library's interlibrary loan system. They reported there are twenty-eight copies available in the state of Ohio. If you have a library card, you can file an interlibrary loan request here: https://www.columbuslibrary.org/library-services/ . There are also used copies available on Amazon and eBay for under twenty dollars. You may want to rewatch the movie after reading the book, so we can compare and contrast in our discussion. The Columbus Library has four copies on DVD, and it's streaming on HBOMax.

These three timelines have a lot of connective tissue holding them together; certain symbols and motifs appear repeatedly, not to mention Mackay’s Louis, a figure whom Gabrielle seems drawn to in each lifetime.
