Profs & Pints DC: The Love Lecture
[Profs and Pints DC](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“The Love Lecture,”** a contemplation of matters of the heart, with Laura Papish, associate professor of philosophy at George Washington University and teacher of a seminar on the philosophy of love, sex, and friendship.
[Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/hill-center-love-lecture](https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/hill-center-love-lecture) .]
Who wrote the book of love? Why does love have to be so sad? Is it a thin line between love and hate?
On a more serious note, how does our society's understanding of love and romantic love shape our experience of it? Why do we think of love as mysterious and irrational? Do those we love need to be lovable? Is love necessarily a morally good thing, or can it actually make it harder for us to be good?
Show your love for learning by hearing such questions tackled by Laura Papish, who has built a considerable following among Washington D.C. fans of Profs and Pints with her annual talks exploring the intersection of the brain, the soul, and the heart. Hilariously accompanied by her husband, Chris (on guitar), she’ll offer up a delicious assortment of thoughts about the upcoming Valentine’s Day holiday—some dark, some sweet, and some giving you plenty to chew on.
Dr. Papish will start by examining how ancient Greeks thought about erotic love and move on from there, looking at how love is envisioned in modern thinkers, classic novels, recent films, and pop culture. She’ll also discuss the origins of the idea that people have a “soul mate” and how some thinkers have tried to criticize or transform the very concept of love.
Together, we'll explore different possibilities for love and those mysteries about it that have left more than a few of us feeling befuddled.
Feel free to show up if you are lovelorn, love-stricken, or just love to hear a fascinating discussion. (Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later.)

Real Talk
**Tired of surface-level conversations?**
Join us for *Real Talk*—an evening of deep, real connection with strangers who are down to go there.
We’ll meet at the church (we are a secular group), break into small groups, and draw questions from a deck of cards designed to spark vulnerable, honest conversations.
***Rules:***
1. Don't debate politics.
2. Keep what is shared in the group within the group.
3. If you need to use your phone, step away from your group first.
\*\*If you show up late, please hop into a group and don't interrupt the speaker. Just sit down in a group of your choice, and they'll bring you up to speed when whoever is talking finishes.
Community of Christ church: 3526 Massachusetts Ave.
PS—If you want to support the group (Meetup organizer fees, new card games, misc. materials) then you can buy me a coffee here:

^^This is 100% optional, and can be done on a one-time or monthly basis. But the meetup will always be free. Thanks! 🙏

Shared Pages, Shared Insights.
📚 Do you love reading, but wish you had a structure and a community to share your insights with?
Join our small circle of curious minds (just 4 members per gathering) as we come together for an hour of focused reading—in the calm setting of a library or the cozy atmosphere of a café.
Here’s how it works:
First part: Quiet reading on your own—bring a book you’re exploring, whether it’s philosophy, history, psychology, literature, or anything meaningful to you.
Second part: We regroup and each person shares key takeaways, insights, or questions sparked by their reading. This sparks a structured yet free-flowing conversation around ideas, perspectives, and personal reflections.
Why join?
Add structure to your reading habit.
Discover new books, authors, and ideas through others’ choices.
Build real connections by sharing and listening deeply.
Socialize around something meaningful instead of small talk.
· Dames · by Berkeley & Enright @ Mary Riley Styles Library
Busby Berkeley’s movies tend to all have the same general plot: someone’s trying to mount a show, usually on Broadway, but something happens that puts the project in jeopardy. In this feature a multimillionaire who thinks that stage shows are “filthy” entertainment organizes a boycott. This obstacle will be overcome, of course, because without a show there can’t be the elaborately choreographed fantasy sequence for which Berkeley is so famous. Love both real and feigned wends its way through the action, with a happy ending inevitable for all.
■ Title — *Dames*

Socrates Café Rockville Meetup
Socrates Café meets on the first Saturday of each month. Though this may be considered a "philosophical" group, there are no rules as to what is discussed. Usually, the topics revolve around social concerns, morality, and the first principles of things.
Prior to each meeting we vote online for the questions we will discuss. That way, we will have enough time to ruminate on them and have more in-depth conversations. If you RSVP to a meeting, you may post your question in the event comments section below. I'll send out a survey for voting a few days prior to the meetup. We discuss two questions each night. So you will get to cast two votes in the survey.
When we meet, we break into smaller groups of five to seven to discuss the top two vote-getters. Each group discusses one question for around 45-50 minutes, and we then take a short break. After reconvening, each group moves on to its second question.
Hope to see you there!

MEN'S Chapter Online Support Group

[Men's Virtual Chapter, Recovering from Religion Support Group Tickets, Multiple Dates | Eventbrite](https://www.eventbrite.com/e/mens-virtual-chapter-recovering-from-religion-support-group-tickets-722315403817?aff=oddtdtcreator)
This is an RfR-wide event, not tied to any particular local chapter.
\*NOTE: This meeting is solely for individuals who identify as male.
The Recovering from Religion MEN'S Chapter Online Support Group will meet the 1st Saturday of each month @ 10am Central Time (USA), unless the date falls on a holiday. Attendees are welcome to share, and may also decide to remain anonymous if they so choose.
The primary focus of a Recovering From Religion support group is to provide ongoing peer support to individuals as they let go of their religious beliefs. This transitional period is an ongoing process that can result in a range of emotions, as well as a ripple effect of consequences throughout an individual’s life. As such the support meetings are safe and anonymous places to express these doubts, fears, and experiences without biased feedback or proselytizing.
These groups are free, small group style meetings. No professional therapist is present, group leaders are volunteers trained in peer support. You are not required to give your real name or show your face on camera. You will be invited, but not required to talk about yourself and your experiences.
Be aware that trolls sometimes appear. Your group leader will make every effort to eject anyone behaving badly as quickly as possible.
Extra Support:
RfR has an immense database of well-curated digital resources collected on all topics related to doubt, non-belief, and transition out of religion. [www.recoveringfromreligion.org/resources](http://www.recoveringfromreligion.org/resources)
If you find you need to talk with someone before the meeting date, RfR has a Helpline with phone and online chat for that express purpose. [www.Recoveringfromreligion.org](http://www.recoveringfromreligion.org/) .
If you’re seeking professional help, we can offer the Secular Therapy Project to provide options to connect with a professional therapist. All therapists have been thoroughly vetted by our organization and offer only evidence-based and non-religious treatment. Connect with them at [www.seculartherapy.org.](http://www.seculartherapy.org./)

The Gen Z Perspective on Modern Politics
Evie Nyilasi will be discussing generation Z and the global political factors that contribute to this generation's unique perspective and political actions. She will be discussing Generational movements that are unique to this generation across the globe, and attempt to explain the motivations behind them. Technology, global perspectives, and polarization will be common themes in this discussion. As she is a part of this generation herself, some of this will be anecdotal of her own experience.
Evie Nyilasi is an 18 year old student at Heritage High School. She was born and raised in Northern Virginia and has attended Northern Virginia Ethical Society for more than a decade. She is a recent graduate of the NoVES Sunday school and is going to be attending Bryn Mawr College in the fall. Her parents are both active members in the NoVES community. Evie is also a politically minded and involved person having interned for the Harris-Walz campaign and passed a campaign finance resolution at the Leesburg Town Council. She's really excited to go from listening to talks, to finally giving one!
Evie is also on the Board of La Mano Amiga, a non-profit helping Honduran adults become self-sufficient. We will be collecting donations for this organization for the month of February in honor of Evie's talk.

Humanist Community Celebrating Darwin Day
Dale Gnidovec, Curator of the Orton Hall Museum of Geology at The Ohio State University, will be presenting a program he has wanted to share with us for a long time: Plate Tectonics. His description of his program:
Continents on the move - Nothing in Earth history makes sense without moving continents - it tells us why mountains, volcanoes, minerals, and fossils are where they are. This talk examines the evidence for continental drift, why it was disbelieved, and explains how the more-encompassing theory of plate tectonics was developed and eventually proven. Dale is an energetic, incredibly knowledgeable, and very entertaining speaker and this will be another wonderful program by Dale. Hope to see you there!
Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk.
Going forward our meetings will be hybrid. You can meet us in-person or attend online
