Free Self-Defense Class – Maryland Systema (Takoma Park)
Have you been thinking about trying self-defense training, but do not want a loud, aggressive, or overly competitive environment?
This free intro class is a simple way to get started.
Maryland Systema offers practical self-defense training for adults in Takoma Park with a focus on movement, awareness, breathing, posture, and calm under pressure.
This class is designed for beginners and first-timers who want real-world self-defense training in a welcoming setting.
You do not need experience. You do not need to be in top shape. You do not need a martial arts background. You just need to show up ready to learn.
This is not a sport-based class built around winning points, memorizing routines, or trying to look impressive. It is a more practical approach to adult self-defense training that helps you stay balanced, aware, and functional when things feel uncertain.
If you have been searching for self-defense classes in Takoma Park, beginner self-defense near you, or practical self-defense training for adults, this class is a good place to start.

Architecting Governed Healthcare Data Platforms on AWS
Healthcare organizations are increasingly using cloud-based real-world evidence (RWE) platforms to power clinical research, population health analytics, and AI-driven insights. However, building these systems on AWS introduces complex governance challenges around privacy, compliance, and multi-institution collaboration.
This session explores how to architect data governance into healthcare analytics platforms on AWS, focusing on practical design patterns rather than policy theory. We examine how ethical data stewardship principles such as consent, accountability, and responsible data use, can be implemented using cloud-native controls and services.
The presentation walks through key architectural considerations for secure RWE platforms on AWS, including role-based access control, auditability, data minimization, and encryption, and how these capabilities support compliance requirements such as HIPAA and GDPR. Attendees will learn how federated, multi-account AWS architectures enable collaboration across institutions while preserving local data ownership and control.
We will also discuss privacy-preserving analytics patterns on AWS, including approaches that support federated learning, differential privacy, and secure computation to enable AI-driven insights without exposing raw patient data. Practical implementation trade-offs such as performance, scalability, and operational complexity will be highlighted using real-world platform scenarios.
Attendees will leave with actionable AWS architecture patterns and governance strategies for building secure, compliant, and scalable real-world evidence platforms that unlock innovation while maintaining patient trust.

RSVPs are required. The reason is that it should increase your own enjoyment. You see, the ideal number of players for a pickup soccer game is perhaps 6x6 - 8x8; some players won't attend if they think the turnout will be low, and others will just assume the game will be cancelled even though we always play. (As a practical matter, smaller games are less fun since the comics won't have the audience they need, but, they do have two hidden benefits: shorter, more intense games/workouts and fewer face kicks/yellow cards. So we play no matter how small or large.) So non-RSVPers are a little short sighted, since they don't seem to want to maximize their own enjoyment in the long run. Rational and sane players who have a good chance of attending RSVP a week early both here and at https://meetup.com/dcsoccer , the parent soccer group.
Socrates Café Rockville Meetup
Socrates Cafés are gatherings around the world where people from different backgrounds get together and exchange thoughtful ideas and experiences while embracing the Socratic Method; the idea that we learn more when we question, and question with others.
Although this may be considered a "philosophical" group, there are no rules as to what is discussed. Those attending decide upon the questions of the night. Usually, the topics revolve around social concerns, moral issues, and the first principles of things.
Prior to each meeting we vote online for the questions we will discuss. That way, we will have enough time to ruminate on them and have more in-depth conversations. If you RSVP to a meeting, you may post your question in the event comments section below. I'll send out a survey for voting a few days prior to the meetup. We discuss two questions each night. So you will get to cast two votes in the survey.
When we meet, we break into smaller groups of five to seven to discuss the top two vote-getters. Each group discusses one question for around 45-50 minutes, and we then take a short break. After reconvening, each group moves on to its second question.
Hope to see you there!

Tech & Truth Café
An open space for real conversation about how technology is shaping our world, and how we can respond with wisdom, purpose, and values.
## COMING UP:
## Life with Augmented Intelligence
**Shaping how we live, work, and build in an AI-driven world**
From assistants → to collaboration → to autonomous systems
***
**A different way of thinking, working, building.**
Most people are still using AI at the surface.
Answers. Shortcuts. Quick help.
But underneath, work is starting to look different:
* systems instead of tasks
* collaboration instead of commands
* design instead of effort
This is a space to step into that.
Not a workshop.
Not a panel.
A place to see what’s emerging, hear how others are thinking, and explore what it means for your own life and work.

Tensions are high following the Battle of Hellknight Hill, and while Cheliax hasn't taken any direct action, they've encouraged privateers to attack Andoran shipping. One of these pirates is especially overconfident, and believes she can win more favor with a more direct attack–one on the Augustana shipyards. Coincidentally, the Pathfinder Society is in the market for a new ship, and the heads of Supplies and Procurement are touring some that are available when the attack begins. As the escorts to Nairaba and Kitsch, the two aforementioned heads of their divisions, it's up to you to keep your charges safe while dealing with the chaos.

In-Person Event: The Answers to Depression & Anxiety
This is an in-person meeting. At this meeting you will get answers to depression and anxiety. Find out the source of them and how to get rid of them.
Did you know that unwanted emotions like anxiety, depression, unhappiness, loneliness, hopelessness, anger, fear, or feelings of irritation don’t just fall on you for no reason. They are not random occurrences that simply happen to people's minds. They are definitely not due to a chemical imbalance in your brain from some nebulous chemical reaction "by chance".
Your negative emotions are the symptoms of the painful experiences that you have which are not healed, and which are still affecting you.
The effects of these painful experiences are exacerbated by the pressures or difficulties of the other problems in your life.
Come to our Meetup, where we can introduce you to some of the knowledge, tools and techniques of the breakthroughs in the field of the mind that we can apply to this ever important area of life.
Be sure to click on the red "Attend" button below to come to this local event. We look forward to seeing you there.
