Yonge and Steeles is at the centre of Koreatown North and Little Persia. Bathurst and Steeles is the heart of the Russo-Jewish community in the GTA. This hike covers the transition zone between the two. We'll also make a detour to Westminster Creek at the edge of the neighbourhood. Unsurprisingly, the food here is Korean, Persian, Russian, and Ashkenazi Jewish. There are also two Georgian bakeries—Georgian cuisine is popular in the former Soviet bloc. The hike ends at Bathurst and Steeles, where there are also Vietnamese and Turkish restaurants thrown in the mix. The most interesting option in the area is probably jumbo Korean dumplings and hand made noodles, one of the best in the region. This is not a religious or political event. **Highlights** 1. UNDERSTANDING Bad Stress Out "Inner Peace" ZEN QIGONG Health = A Balanced Flow Of Qigong The health of our body is dependent upon a clear, strong and balanced flow of Chi through the Sen Lines. Since qigong practice accomplishes just this, it should come as no surprise that the benefits of qigong (also spelled “Chi Kung”) practice extend to every physical system of our bodies, as well as to the mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of our Being. Physical Benefits of Qigong Practice: Qigong practice makes the body strong and supple. It improves balance, stamina and flexibility. It has positive effects on the cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, endocrine, and immune and central nervous systems. It tends to create smooth skin, and a pleasant feeling of deep warmth within the body. It increases sexual vitality, and allows our sleep-time to be more deep and restorative. Over time, qigong practice can reduce or eliminate chronic pain. It also has the power to reverse the aging process, and restore youthfulness. Emotional Benefits: The smooth and balanced flow of Qi created by qigong practice shows itself as a joyful, relaxed, optimistic and energized state of mind. While the emotional energies of anger, fear, anxiety or grief still may arise, they will be much less “sticky” – and be held and then dissolved within the larger field of joy, gratitude, acceptance and equanimity. Mental & Spiritual Benefits of Qigong: The abundance of clarified energy and mental stillness generated by qigong practice supports great mental clarity, and nourishes both intuition and creativity. As acclaimed cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz, vice-chair and professor of surgery at Columbia University and director of the Cardiovascular Institute and Complementary Medicine Program at New York–Presbyterian Hospital writes in his best selling book ‘Staying Young’: “Qigong allows us to cope with the day to day struggle of being human – it can help us stretch and stay loose and balanced in both mind and body.” On the Oprah Winfrey show in November he simply put it this way, "If you want to be healthy and live to be 100, do Qigong." He also added that Qigong reverses the aging process. Parts of P.K.Z.Q. are modeled off of the Mind-Body Wellness Program taught at the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. The mindfulness based stress reduction meditation techniques come from Dr. Jongmae Park of Loyola Marymount University. During P.K.Z.Q., cares and troubles wash away. Replacing them are positive images, increased confidence and peace of mind. Near the end of each class the goal is for participants to attain the full ‘relaxation response’ and it’s that response that helps release the feel good endorphins. Why is this important? Endorphins encourage white blood cells and white blood cells help the body fight infection and disease. According to Dr. Benson, “repeated activation of the relaxation response can reverse sustained problems in the body and mend the internal wear and tear brought on by stress.” (Ref: Center for Women’s Healthcare, Weil Medical College of Cornell University.) "When the mind is trained, quieted, then room is created for our brightness, our True Self to shine through. The nature of True Self IS positive, loving, witnessing, unmoved in the moving. No positive affirmation can deliver the depth of contentment, of joy that already exists, that comes forward from True Self. The more we connect with it, the more it grows through us. In such an environment, the body has comfort, hurry sickness and chasing to 'fix' what we 'thought' we were collapses. The nervous system can finally rest - Stillness. You'll learn how to spot, identify and confidently harvest a range of common edibles, alongside developing the kind of attentive eye that turns every walk in the woods into something richer. You will learn: * How to identify Ontario's most common wild edibles by their leaves, flowers, roots and seasonal cycles * How to tell edible plants apart from their toxic lookalikes * Where to look for different types of edibles * The principles of ethical and sustainable foraging **Who It's For:** Anyone curious about the food growing right under our feet. No prior foraging experience required. **Awesome first day of summer is here!** Potlucks are full of terrific food & lovely faces - a great opportunity to socialize over deliciousness. Let's celebrate our sunny memories with a Vegan Potluck at Christie Pits Park - located beside Christie subway station. This is your chance to meet other like-minded individuals and be part of a vibrant community! Make sure to bring a *vegan* dish to share, or to eat if you're not into the sharing thing. In order to limit waste, please bring your own reusable plates, water bottle, utensils and serving ware and all will be yum! Bring your picnic blanket(s) and water to stay hydrated if you'd like. Feel free to bring a project to chill with after eating - soccer ball, frisbee, volleyball, board games, cards, a guitar or speaker, your ping pong or crochet set or just your fabulousness! Some rules - *For the new vegans, first timers, or veg curious, please ensure that the food you bring to share be* all \*plant-based, so no honey or dairy/cheese/yogurt/butter/cream etc., and obviously no eggs/fish/poultry/meat or any animal-derived ingredients like food colours or additives. When in doubt, Google is your best friend! A reminder to please label the ingredients you used. Some vegans care about the fact that you may have fried meat in a certain fryer before frying their vegan food in the same oil. Mindfulness and minimalism goes a long way in creating a positive and meaningful experience for all. * All garbage and recyclable items must be thrown out by the end of the party. * The park must be left reasonably clean at the end of the party/event. This means no large spills, excessive garbage/debris, or personal belongings can be left after the event. * Guests don't have to be Vegan, but must respect this is a Vegan event and bring only Vegan foods * No alcohol - the venue doesn't allow for this * Bring your own reusable plates, utensils and serving ware * Help cleaning up after the event is over. Join us at our vegan-friendly social climbing session! We welcome all vegans, vegetarians, or anyone who is curious about the lifestyle and/or interested in eating more plant-based. No climbing experience is necessary. Whether you're a seasoned pro or a first-time climber, all are welcome. We will be bouldering, top roping, and using autobelays - feel free to join whichever activity you're interested in! For those who are climbing for the first time, not to worry as it is quick to pick up and we are happy to provide some pointers on technique. You can boulder or use the autobelays after getting a quick orientation from the staff at the gym. For top roping, we're happy to belay any of our attendees. **Fees**: * $28 admission fee, plus rentals Climbing shoes are strongly recommended (disclaimer: rental shoes are not vegan as they contain suede/leather). Harnesses are only necessary for top roping and autobelay, however this gym is primarily a rope climbing gym. * Shoe rental: $7.00 * Harness rental: $7.00 Remember to sign the [waiver](https://waiver.smartwaiver.com/w/5f121ea156df1/web/) before you hit the rocks! Join us at 11:30 a.m. for a meditation class led by Khenpo Karze, followed by a public talk and Q&A. The meditation focus varies from class to class. We are currently learning how to meditate on the Four Immeasurables: loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity. The class begins with 30 minutes of meditation instruction, followed by 5-10 minutes of meditation practice, and then continues with discussion and Q&A. Each session concludes with a brief Chenrezig practice in which we recite Om Mani Padme Hung (a prayer of compassion), and a dedication prayer that our efforts benefit all beings. This class offers a strong foundation in meditation, helping cultivate inner peace and compassion amidst busy lives. All are welcome! This program is open to anyone with an interest in Buddhism and you can come to all or any part of the program. Families are welcome. There is no fee, but donations are encouraged. Join us!
