Meet the Techstars Startup Weekend Winners
**On Friday Feb. 27th Meet the overall winners of Techstars Startup Weekend – Richmond Changemakers.**
The Campus Closet and Drip Share team developed from the merging of a community member, a student group from Hampden-Sydney College, and a group of University of Richmond students.
Learn about their approach to:
* Tackling Sustainability
* Customer Validation
* Prototyping Design
* Business Model
Several of the team members will join us, and in their own words:
**Emma Cooke**. “I am a sophomore from Columbus, Ohio, majoring in Business Administration with a double concentration in Marketing and Entrepreneurship, and a minor in American Studies. This upcoming summer, I will be interning with IGS Energy, a company in my hometown, as their Campus Talent Engagement Intern. My interest in entrepreneurship started at a young age, but it wasn't until I came to Richmond that I became more serious about all of the possibilities in this field. The program here at U of R has taught me about the importance of building human connection, pushing yourself to think outside of the box, and treating failures as a new opportunity. Entrepreneurship means so much to me because it allows me to embrace the creative, analytical, and professional sides of myself.”
**Anna Gregory.** “I’m a sophomore from Concord, Massachusetts, majoring in Leadership Studies and double minoring in Entrepreneurship and Rhetoric & Communication. Richmond’s entrepreneurship program has given me an incredible professional and creative outlet in a supportive, encouraging environment. Entrepreneurship has become really important to me because it challenges me to think bigger, take initiative, and actually bring ideas to life.”
**Emma Herrington.** "I grew up in up-state New York. My major is Business Administration with a concentration in Management / Entrepreneurship. Last summer I held an internship with a frim in the fashion industry, headquartered in New York City. Entrepreneurship is important to me because both sides of my family have been entrepreneurs. My Dad was passed down a 4th-generation family business, and my mom has had her own interior design company for almost a decade.
**Caroline Kelly.** "I was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts. I am a senior majoring in Business Administration, with concentrations in Management Consulting & Entrepreneurship, and a double major in Leadership Studies. Two summers ago, I was a Public Relations Intern at Nicole Russo Communications Inc. in Boston's North End. This past summer, I was a Summer Associate Intern at Guidepoint where I worked on the Institutional Client Service Consulting team. Upon graduation in May, I will be returning to Guidepoint as a full time Associate on the team. I currently work part-time at the Law School Career Development Center, and at EVR Research, a small investment management firm. Entrepreneurship is important to me because I enjoy identifying everyday pain points and figuring out how to turn ideas into real, practical solutions. It also gives me the opportunity to apply concepts I’ve learned in accounting, finance, and management in a more hands-on, collaborative, and real-world setting."
**The Discussion.** This series of hybrid events is perfect for budding entrepreneurs, experienced executive mentors cultivating an entrepreneurial mindset, early-stage investors, and students exploring innovative product design.
At each session, business founders serve as guest speakers share about their career, their firm's business model, as well as the successes and challenges in the product development process. Participants learn from the speakers’ experiences, discuss valuable insights, and connect with other entrepreneurs, students, faculty, and investors.
**Logistics.** A light lunch is served, as entrepreneurs connect with one another, learn from peers, and contribute to the conversation:
* Friday, February 27, 2026
* 11:30am EST - Coffee & Connection
* 12:00pm - 1:00pm EST - Presentation & Discussion

The Investor Playbook: Numbers, Strategy, Execution
**This is not a lecture. This is a working session.**
If you’re tired of real estate events where someone talks at you for an hour and you leave inspired but still unsure what to actually do, this class is different. Investor 101 is a collaborative, hands-on experience designed to help you think through your own numbers, your own goals, and your own strategy in real time. You won’t just listen, you’ll participate, ask questions, work through scenarios, and leave with tools and frameworks you can use long after the event.
We start with where to get the money, then walk through how to choose the right investment strategy, cash flow, equity growth, or a blend of both. You’ll learn how different property types perform in specific DMV neighborhoods and how to match the right area to your personal financial goals. Every concept is grounded in local examples, real scenarios, and live discussion, so you can immediately apply what you’re learning.
This class is led by a full team of experienced professionals, including a real estate agent, lender, and seasoned property manager, all of whom bring a bird’s-eye view of the DMV market from working across DC, MD, and VA. You’ll gain insight not just from theory, but from professionals who actively see deals, financing challenges, rental trends, and tenant demand across the region.
By the end of the class, you will leave with clear, actionable next steps, a personalized investment framework, and the confidence to begin your real investing journey immediately, not “someday,” but now.
Curanderismo Spiritual Protection for Empaths
Spiritual Protection Workshop for Empaths and Sensitive People.
We are excited for the visit from our recognized elder in the Curanderismo Tradition Maestra Ixtoii Paloma Cervantes. She is traveling to the east coast and will be sharing this sacred tradition with us and will be teaching us how to protect our energy in multiple realities.
Why is it so important to know about Spiritual Protection? As a group of practitioners who come together to share, practice, learn, teach, and enjoy spiritual practices, we sometimes find ourselves in the “too sensitive” setting.
Or we may be learning how to “feel” energies and still don’t know when to be open and when to be closed, and we are getting too many headaches.
Or it is absorbing so much energy that it is difficult to fall asleep at night.
Or maybe the opposite, not knowing what we are doing and draining ourselves without control.
All these issues are “fixable” with the proper technique.
We are also going to learn how to know if an energetic portal is open and how to close it.
INFORMATION:
Type of event: Spiritual Workshop.
Who can participate: This workshop is open to everyone. You don't need to know anything at all. You need only an open heart to learn something new.
**About Ixtoii Paloma Cervantes: Maestra Ixtoii Paloma** is an elder, instructor, or “Maestra” of the Curanderismo Tradition and also a full-time Curandera and Shaman. She was born and raised in Mexico into the tradition. She started working full-time as a Curandera in the 1980’s. In the late 90’s she moved to the UK and then to California (USA) where she kept her practice and started to teach Mexican Shamanism and Curanderismo and other spiritual modalities. Now not only does she teach in California, but also in other states and countries.
It is important to know that she is not an anthropologist or historian. Paloma learned from her teachers in the ancient way, “oral tradition”.
\*IMPORTANT NOTE: Paloma is a Mexican Shaman who believes that "medicine plants" are helpful to some people only when used properly in ceremonies. The use of any conscious expanding plant or animal medicines should only be used with the strict and loving guidance of an experienced facilitator. She does not allow the use of any plants, brews, ceremonial tobacco, recreational drugs, alcohol, cannabis, etc. in her workshops or healing ceremonies. Please do not use these before or during her events and services. If you do so you will be asked to leave the event immediately and without a refund. For medicinal plant or animal medicine guidance, please arrange for a private consultation to discuss your particular needs and expectations.
This is a two day intensive in person workshop. We will email a list of what to bring and how to prepare for this workshop as soon as you book.
Workshop Details:

Time: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM (Same start and finish at same time on both days)

Maximize cashflow with midterm rentals
Learn how homeowners and real estate investors are using mid-term furnished rentals to earn higher rental income with fewer turnovers than short-term rentals and more flexibility than traditional long-term leases.
This seminar covers how to rent your house to traveling professionals, relocating families, insurance placements, and corporate tenants. We’ll break down pricing strategies, tenant demand, furnishing basics, lease structure, insurance considerations, and local rules you need to know.
Whether you’re a homeowner with an extra property, an investor looking for better cash flow, or someone moving away from Airbnb, this session will give you a clear, practical framework to get started.
Ideal for homeowners, small investors, and anyone interested in flexible rental income, furnished rentals, or corporate housing strategies.
**Guest Speakers**
*Jess Young* co-founded Tonlé Stays with Joe Hurm, where they invest in and operate short- and mid-term rental properties. With an operator-first mindset, Jess focuses on turning real estate into efficient, scalable hospitality businesses.
*Susan Velasco* is the CEO and Founder of Kyma, a nationwide temporary housing provider that helps families displaced by property damage find quality homes fast. She connects landlords with vetted, insurance-backed tenants—so you get reliable income and less vacancy headache. Based in the Washington DC area, she's excited to meet and collaborate with local property owners, furnished rental operators, and those interested in mid-term rentals.
Learn Meditation and Stress Management in MD
Learn to manage stress and achieve self-growth through simple relaxation and Meditation.
Heartfulness Meditation is a simple, modern, methodical approach to meditation. Rather than homing in on your breath or repeating a mantra, you simply focus inward, on your heart, to cultivate inner strength and serenity. Heartfulness meditation is gaining traction in recent years. It focuses on the heart, allowing individuals to connect with themselves on a deeper level, and ultimately achieve peace, relaxation, and clarity. It is a practice that encourages patience, self-compassion, and acceptance, helping cultivate a deeper appreciation for the present moment.
This practice is offered with love and at no cost

Columbus in-person chapter meeting: Your 2026 Buy Box + Successful Rentals 101
(Note: RSVPing here on meetup does NOT reserve your seat. To do that, you’ll need to register at our website, **[HERE](https://www.coreerocks.com/Events.aspx?ID=Columbus-in-person-chapter-meeting-Your-2026-Buy-Box-Successful-Rentals-101-14-3-3-2026)**.)
Let’s be honest. In 2026, you can’t use 2023 strategies and “hope” a deal works out.
Demand for rentals, wholesale deals, retail deals, and even loans has changed, and that means that the most active, experienced investors have changed the way they do deals (and maybe even the kinds of deals they’ll do).
Here at COREE, our job is to shortcut your learning curve by introducing you to the people and concepts you need to take the shortest path from here to financial freedom, and we think you’ll agree that this meeting is a no-brainer, if you’re serious about making wealth-building deals this year.
Here’s the detailed agenda:
From 6:00–7:00 p.m.,
From 7:30–9:00 p.m.,
Agenda:
5:00–6:00 p.m. Complimentary Light Dinner & Networking
6:00–7:00 p.m\*\*. New Investor Meeting: Basics of Making Money in Rentals with Vena Jones-Cox\*\*. If you’re planning to buy rentals today, you have to know how to evaluate the REAL income and expenses before you make an offer. If you’re new, you’ll finally understand how rentals really produce profit. If you’ve been around a while, you’ll see how today’s numbers change the math.
7:00 –7:30 **Buy-Sell-Trade (Members Only)**
Bring your deals, money, buyer lists, referrals, and requests.
Fast-moving. Bring flyers or business cards.
Guests get a quick orientation with Executive Director Vena Jones-Cox.
7:30–9:00 p.m. **Main Meeting: Your 2026 Buy Box: What Experienced Investors are Buying in 2026 (and what they won’t touch).** Our panel of active, experienced investors will lay out their 2026 buy boxes. Not hypotheticals. Not “in theory.”
What they are actually buying—and what they won’t touch.
They’ll share:
* What property types investors are actively pursuing
* What strategies they’ve stopped using
* The exact numbers they require before they say yes
* How insurance, taxes, and rates have tightened the buy box
* What instantly disqualifies a deal in today’s market
* How to define your own 2026 buy box based on capital and risk tolerance
Members and non-members at any level of knowledge and experience are welcome—as long as you’re serious about real estate, value experience-based, no B.S. education, and want to give as much as you get.
Remember, to actually reserve your seat, you have to go **[HERE](https://www.coreerocks.com/Events.aspx?ID=Columbus-in-person-chapter-meeting-Your-2026-Buy-Box-Successful-Rentals-101-14-3-3-2026)** and register on our website!

Humanist Program: Fighting the Efforts to Insert Religion into Public Education
The Humanist Monthly Program is our longest running event and still a community favorite. In the old days it used to be called "Going to HCCO" and we still like to think of it as our flagship event.
Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk.
Our March speakers are Molly Gaines and Zack Parrish, co-organizers of the Secular Education Association:
They will share their story of how a small group of Ohio parents grew into a national organization tracking released-time religious instruction and other church–state issues in public schools. The presentation will cover SEA’s early wins and hard lessons, what we’re seeing nationally right now, and how local advocates can play a meaningful role in protecting public education. Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of the landscape — and practical ways to get involved.
Going forward our meetings will be hybrid. You can meet us in-person or attend online
