The Alt/Cult Spring Social
Okay, so spring has already sprung. But late May is the point of the year when the temperature doesn't plunge 10 degrees the moment the sun sets or goes behind a cloud, so what better time to catch up with old friends and make new ones over drinks?
This time, we're meeting at Frank's, a rooftop bar in Peckham which is reopening after its winter hibernation. Yes, you have to walk up a few stories, but you're rewarded with an array of high-level installation art and arguably the best view in South London (don't worry, there'll be a venue change if the weather looks bleak!). The entrance is around the corner from the area's iconic cinema, the PeckhamPlex.
And if you need more incentive, here's a timely article about the venue: https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2026/may/12/bold-tendencies-car-park-that-changed-british-art
Usually, we kick these off around 7pm, but as it's outdoors I'm setting the start time earlier so people can make the most of the sunshine if they want.

"Words are inadequate to express the uniquely nurturing experience I had during your Aerial Relaxation Pod class... and the music was amazing! The feeling of being securely wrapped in a silk hammock from head to toe, suspended in the air, slowly rocking, with the crystal bowls and ambient music created a sublime and profound atmosphere. It was as if I was in a cocoon of total support, allowing peace to flow into my entire being." - Alison

**The Lineup**
The opening party of CloseUp Festival 2026 is headlined by the brilliant indie-dance-punk sextet **Home Counties**. Having recently collaborated with Al Doyle (LCD Soundsystem, Hot Chip) on their acclaimed second album, *Humdrum*, the band is renowned for trading traditional guitars for restless synth-pop grooves and sardonic, hook-laden social commentary. Their electrifying live sets combine post-punk energy with an irresistible, synth-driven bounce that feels reminiscent of CHVRCHES with a splash of art rock and danceable electronics!
The night also features incredible support from rising alt-pop band **Girl Group** and the infectious, club-soaked energy of **This Is A Fever**.
**Why You Should Go**
This is your chance to catch the opening night of the 11th edition of the beloved, independent CloseUp Festival in an intimate setting before these bands blow up on the main stage. With its highly danceable, electroclash-meets-pop sound, this lineup guarantees an electric atmosphere from the very first track.

Check photos of our past visit, it was a lovely trip which was enjoyed by us all https://www.meetup.com/Passionate-about-Travelling-Food-and-Events/photos/31438998/#496630274
Towards the north of the park, on a rise, is the copper horse statue. From there, the 4km Long Walk, an iconic tree lined path, slopes downhill to Windsor Castle, besides the Thames.
Virginia Water Lake was originally little more than a stream. During World War II, the lake was drained, as its obvious shape provided enemy guidance at night to Windsor and other important military targets in the area. It has been used by the crews for the Harry Potter films for lakeside scenes.
The Cascade, or Waterfall, is also notable. It was constructed from stones brought from Bagshot Heath. They are rumoured to be the remains from a Saxon settlement. From the Cascade a stream runs through a glen and ultimately enters the Thames at Chertsey. By the side of the Cascade, immense stones are arranged to form a cavern known as 'The Robber's Cave'.
**Walk description**
Distance: 7 - 8 miles
Grading: Easy no steep hills, flat path all the way
Rating: 2 out of 10
Ascent: 189m
Walk time: About 4.5 to 6.5 hours of actual walk/stroll, depending how fast we walk and how many of us.
On my first trip during Covid there were 30 of us, it took 6 hours to arrive to Windsor due to the size and lack of exercise as a result of being cooped up at home for way too long, we had a few breaks along the way while others caught up with us. Recently with a smaller group of 15 to 20 it took us 4 hours.
There will be 2 or 3 10 to 15 minutes break during our walk, as well as a 30 minutes lunch break where we can have a picnic on the grass. On our arrival to Winsor, you can opt to break up into small groups, a chance for some to visit the castle, this will cost extra to enter, there is a shopping centre, and several eateries joints, or some may wish to walk along the River Thames path etc.
This will be the 5th time i have organised this walk and we always end up at Lebanese Night which i discovered on my first visit. A restaurant severing delicious halal food and the price is quite reasonable too, check out website for details and menu [Lebanese Nights Windsor, Berkshire SL4 1PR - Menu, Reviews (94), Photos (20) - Restaurantji](https://www.restaurantji.co.uk/berkshire/windsor/lebanese-nights-/)
So on arrival in Windsor after exploring you will find a few of us here address 41 Thames St, Windsor
**MEETING POINT**
We will meet at Clapham Junction Train station at 9 am outside Marks and Spencer. We will leave the meeting point at 9:10am for the 09:19 am train.
Planned arrival time back into London of 7:00pm (we have a group train ticket and you are committed for the day until then).
Please note that this train ticket will allow you to leave from Windsor to London from Windsor and Eton riverside train station.
**FOOD**
We will stop during the hike for a snack lunch so please bring food and drink. We will visit a pub after the hike where we can get refreshments.
**Price £30 non refunded unless cancelled, minus PayPal fees**
**PLEASE RSVP ONLY ONCE YOU HAVE MADE PAYMENT, IF YOU RSVP WITHOUT MAKING PAYMENT YOUR RSVP WILL CHANGE TO NOT GOING.**

🚀Stargazing With Wine, Telescopes & DJ Space Anthems 🌕
🌌Ever look up and marvel with insatiable curiosity at the beauty and wonder of the **universe?** That wild sobering thought that somewhere in the chaos of creation - through the emergence of us - the universe became **conscious** enough to look back in time and not just ask the existential questions, but try to answer them.
🚀 Join fellow big picture and deep thinkers to take a look at **Venus,** **Jupiter** along with planet's potential life‑harbouring **moons**, iconic beautiful **star fields**, the remnants of supernovae witnessed by our earliest ancestors, **multi‑star systems** reminiscent of the twin suns of *Star Wars* and even **Tau Ceti**, a star hosting two Earth‑like worlds in its habitable zone.
All of this under the spring evening - with drinks, engaging conversation, and good‑natured banter — this May. In between observing - we'll have **drinks and engaging chats** on all astronomy related topics for those inclined: Space exploration \| Fermi Paradox \| Astrobiology \| Cosmology \| paleontology\, \| SETI & Drake Equation for alien civilisations estimates \| exoplanetology etc as well as non space chats and banter too\. No doubt we'll hear the usual jokes we've all heard before\! If those don't make you laugh\, my impersonation of Los Angeles ET will\! 👽
And to help set the mood and make the night feel even extra stary,
I’ll put my DJ hat to play some space‑theme tunes and songs about the stars!
You don't need a telescope as you will be able to view through scopes belonging to me and other club members (as long as you behave responsibly and don't temper with expensive equipment). If you have your own telescope/binoculars feel free to bring along and I can help you setting it up if you're a newbie
**==== ITINERARY =====**
We will meet outside H&I Station in Highbury Islington. After a short wait for anyone delayed, I will escort everyone to our observation point in the local park 5 minutes walk away and brief you in terms of what to expect, observing etiquette, tips, equipment handling and take any questions you have - weather general or astronomy/cosmology related.
**After Drinks:** Unless I have a very important 9AM Tue deadline for a unfinished client presentation or something - most of us usually head to a cosy bar for a drink. If so - I will annouce the pub when we leave the park
**==== What Can You Expect To See (this time of year)? ====**
* Orion Nebula
* Jupiter and 4 moons
* Meteors
* Andromedia Galaxy
* Star clusters such as the Pleiades & Owl Cluster etc
* International Space station fly by
* Binary & tripple star systems (think planet *Tatooine in* Starwars!),
* Neptune
* Uranuus
* Our moon
* A look towards the galactic centre of the Mlikyway where that supermassive £22b Labour black hole sits (Sagittarius A)

Join us as we get together to see Paul Rudd in the latest comedy-drama-musical from John Carney, POWER BALLAD! The film follows a washed-up wedding singer, a fading boy band singer and a stolen hit song. Here’s a description, trailer and plan for this event:
DESCRIPTION: Rick, a washed-up wedding singer, and Danny, a fading boy band star, bond over music and a late-night jam session. When Danny turns Rick's song into a hit, Rick sets out to reclaim the recognition he believes he deserves. It stars Paul Rudd, Nick Jonas, Peter McDonald, Marcella Plunkett, Havana Rose Liu and Jack Reynor.
BUZZ & ACCLAIM: The film premiered to rave reviews at this year’s Dublin International Film Festival where critics call it “a sure-fired crowd-pleaser” that “just might be the feel-good hit of the year!” Others say, “Paul Rudd delivers a career-best performance in this charmer” that’s both “hilarious and deeply moving!”
