Palindromes (2004)
Palindromes (2004)
Palindromes is a pseudo-sequel to Todd Solondz's acclaimed debut, Welcome to the Dollhouse, with a few of the same characters. It shares a curdled vision of working class suburbia as well as a mixture of painful self awareness, tragically black comedy and social maladjustment. As ever with Solondz, it isn't for the faint of heart. The film follows a young girl called Aviva, who wants *very* badly to become a mother, to the shock of her family, and the community around her. If that's too simple, Palindromes experiments by splitting itself into eight separate parts, each of which involve Aviva being played by someone different (including, at one point, Jennifer Jason Leigh). Going to be honest, I haven't seen this, but I am intrigued. Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Ht6ewQlXhY Tickets here: https://thenickel.co.uk/screening/356 This is at the Nickel, so let's meet at 8pm for a pre-drink round the corner at The Craft Beer Co. and head in for a little after half eight.

We're now meeting each month at the Bear in Camberwell, where great food and drink options are available, and we can get some time on their decks. Come along with a bunch of vinyl you'd like to play and share with us. Think farewells, breakups, departures, endings and moving on. From tear-stained torch songs to bittersweet bangers. Maybe it’s Don McLean driving the Chevy to the levee, John Denver leaving on a jet plane or Fleetwood Mac going their own way, pack those records that capture the feeling of leaving something behind, grab a drink and join us for a farewell. Grab a drink, enjoy some records. And don't forget to RSVP!

Y @ The Lexington
Y @ The Lexington
London collective Y bring their chaotic, genre-blending sound to The Lexington, mixing post-punk, new wave, alt-rock, electronica and a healthy dose of sax for good measure. "One of the strongest bands to come out of the Windmill scene in recent memory. " Still Listening They delivered a lively set at the 100 Club last December supporting Warmduscher, and their new single *May* has recently been getting some airtime on 6 Music. Having recently collaborated with Al Doyle (LCD Soundsystem, Hot Chip) on their acclaimed second album, *Humdrum*, the band is renowned for trading traditional guitars for restless synth-pop grooves and sardonic, hook-laden social commentary. Their electrifying live sets combine post-punk energy with an irresistible, synth-driven bounce that feels reminiscent of CHVRCHES with a splash of art rock and danceable electronics! The night also features incredible support from rising alt-pop band **Girl Group** and the infectious, club-soaked energy of **This Is A Fever**. **Why You Should Go** This is your chance to catch the opening night of the 11th edition of the beloved, independent CloseUp Festival in an intimate setting before these bands blow up on the main stage. With its highly danceable, electroclash-meets-pop sound, this lineup guarantees an electric atmosphere from the very first track. **Watch & Listen** * **Home Counties** – YouTube: [Watch "New Best Thing" on YouTube](https://www.google.com/search?q=https://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DF3z3z8WwZ4w) \| Instagram: [@homecountiesband](https://www.instagram.com/homecountiesband/) * **Girl Group** – YouTube: [Watch "She Goes (Live)" on YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Wh99dV90b0) \| Instagram: [@girlgroupband](https://www.google.com/search?q=https://www.instagram.com/girlgroupband/) * **This Is A Fever** – Instagram: [@thisisafever](https://www.instagram.com/thisisafever/) **Tickets** 👉👉👉 https://dice.fm/event/537r5d-closeup-festival-2026-w-home-counties-22nd-may-colours-hoxton-london-tickets

The Alt/Cult Spring Social
The Alt/Cult Spring Social
Okay, so spring has already sprung. But late May is the point of the year when the temperature doesn't plunge 10 degrees the moment the sun sets or goes behind a cloud, so what better time to catch up with old friends and make new ones over drinks? This time, we're meeting at Frank's, a rooftop bar in Peckham which is reopening after its winter hibernation. Yes, you have to walk up a few stories, but you're rewarded with an array of high-level installation art and arguably the best view in South London (don't worry, there'll be a venue change if the weather looks bleak!). The entrance is around the corner from the area's iconic cinema, the PeckhamPlex. And if you need more incentive, here's a timely article about the venue: https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2026/may/12/bold-tendencies-car-park-that-changed-british-art Usually, we kick these off around 7pm, but as it's outdoors I'm setting the start time earlier so people can make the most of the sunshine if they want.

The film follows a washed-up wedding singer, a fading boy band singer and a stolen hit song. Here’s a description, trailer and plan for this event: DESCRIPTION: Rick, a washed-up wedding singer, and Danny, a fading boy band star, bond over music and a late-night jam session. When Danny turns Rick's song into a hit, Rick sets out to reclaim the recognition he believes he deserves. Power Ballad is written/directed by John Carney, the master of the modern musical and creative mind behind Once, Begin Again and Sing Street! It stars Paul Rudd, Nick Jonas, Peter McDonald, Marcella Plunkett, Havana Rose Liu and Jack Reynor. BUZZ & ACCLAIM: The film premiered to rave reviews at this year’s Dublin International Film Festival where critics call it “a sure-fired crowd-pleaser” that “just might be the feel-good hit of the year!” Others say, “Paul Rudd delivers a career-best performance in this charmer” that’s both “hilarious and deeply moving!” SUMMER OF ICE CREAM, VOL 2: SHAKE NO. 8!
